DESCRIPTION
The ATL Defender starfighter is a point defense interceptor originally manufactured by the Incom Corporation during the early New Republic era. Meant to be an inexpensive option for small planetary defense militias and sector navies, it had disappointing sales, and is cited as one of the factors which led to Incom's later merger with FreiTek Incorporated.

The Defender is an incredibly small vessel, just 5.3 meters in length. It is flown by a single pilot, and does not incorporate an astromech or hyperdrive. Armament is good for its size, including 2 light laser cannons in the nose and 2 medium cannons in the wingtips. Top speed is a disappointing 80 MGLT, however the Defender incorporates an innovative "engine foil" or "E-foil" system, a derivative of the "strike foil" or "S-foil" used on fighters such as Incom's own X-Wing line which places two of the ship's engines at the end of pivoting arms. The placement of these engines gives the Defender exceptional maneuverability, partially making up for its low overall speed.

The Defender was first marketed primarily to various former Imperial worlds, many of which were looking to upgrade their now obsolete TIE-series starfighters. The Defender, being a compact design, was thought to be a good fit for existing infrastructure which had been designed the small and lightweight TIE. Unfortunately for Incom, the type had an only lukewarm reception, with only small numbers being sold in such markets. The fighter's low cost and - in some aspects - decent specifications did find it some success in developing markets, however, mainly in the Outer Rim.

Defender starfighters were not the hit Incom was hoping for, but they can still be found in service even in the present day, mainly with local militias, mercenaries and pirates. Their compact dimensions make them excellent shipboard craft and "chimney fighters" for point defense roles, such as protecting industrial areas and population centers.

LEGALITY
Restricted. ATL Defenders are starfighters, if poor ones, and are subject to extra licensing requirements and increased scrutiny by authorities.

INTENT
To create a standard, low-end starfighter.
