Right, I was more going for the seemingly illogical fact that the Republic (senate) would have to hire mercenaries to support the Border Alliance, while the BA on itself is so far presented as a loose military affiliation that would be perfectly within its own rules to have individual member planets (and their respectable governments) hire those mercenaries on its own. As I stated a few posts ago I completely understand that with the current character limitation we can't have indies switch factions every two months for "mercenary contract reasons", but at the same time the IC-justification for not allowing it shouldn't come from the Republic in Chandrila.

If that's what the TT decides, that's fine, but I felt obligated to respond and share my view.

No, your opinions make sense. But we're a long way off from the Senate recognizing there is a threat, much less deciding how they want to deal with it, much less actually hiring. Their roleplay is completely based on political maneuvering - I am assuming that Gold Squadron is going to be it for awhile. As in, I assume, most of the timeline.

I'm not quite sure what you're trying to say (especially -Gold Squadron-). I was merely making the point that the Senate shouldn't necessarily have to approve independent mercs joining a PvP conflict on the BA-side, especially because they probably won't for the reasons you stated.

Sorry - mistype. I was playing a video game while typing, I meant to say BA.

The BA won't have funding enough to be hiring mercs or indie factions. It'll have to come from the Senate - but they aren't reliable, so if people want to fight for the BA they should just make a BA character.

I was hoping, looking at the low BA numbers, that the independent Mandalorians (who are in Border Alliance space) could be called upon. Ofcourse, it shouldn't be used as a means to skirt the rules and if I remember correctly my post was about Aegis 2.0, consisting of BA veterans, fighting for the BA. (EDIT: which could be seen as skirting the rules, so whether or not the Senate had to approve they should rather just make BA characters)

Actually - I just did today!

I have a lot of excitement for both the Republic and the Border Alliance, which I was able to channel into my work in the Think Tank, and I would love to continue to contribute to our new faction in a variety of capacities. Regardless of faction leadership, I am excited to help our writers explore the new timeline, these new and engaging factions, as well as their own characters. I fully support others who are interested in applying, and I continue to encourage anyone who has questions or wants to discuss factional leadership with me to do so.

If you have any ideas for the faction that you'd like to share, or if you'd like to talk about what I aim to do, I'd be happy to chat.

For everyone's added benefit, I am going to disclose my application in the hopes it might stimulate some meaningful dialogue about our faction and where it is heading. Please note that I removed the section about AFLs, as I discussed particular candidates and do not think it's appropriate to disclose that nor am I guaranteed any appointments of AFLs by the Administrators (if I even get selected as FL!).

Which faction are you applying for?
  • The Old Republic
What makes you suited for the role of Faction Leader? Be specific.
  • I have some limited experience as a faction leader. Despite those limitations, I am confident that my team and I grew and developed the faction, and that we were well on our way to creating an interesting, dynamic story that offered roleplaying opportunities for a wide range of characters. In addition to that, I have a wide range of leadership positions and experience in the educational and non-for-profit sectors that I can apply to the faction.
How well are you at discussing and resolving matters, especially those involving conflicts of interest?
  • Conflict resolution between members was one of my favorite parts of being a faction leader with the Jedi, and I think I have a clear understanding of conflicts of interests and how they effect stories and writers. I believe I have the capability to be fair and handle matters in a polite, professional manner. I also recognize there will be times I won't feel comfortable handling something, whether it be a murky disagreement between a friend of mine and a member or a disagreement with me as a writer, and I think that having an effective AFL team is crucial for those moments. I have done a lot of thinking about that - which is a topic for later.
Can you work fairly with other factions leaders? Can you organize events with your faction that may not necessarily be victories or net gains?
  • Although I can get fired up (energy is good?), I think that most of my co-workers and peers find me fun to work with. Truly, I'm more interested in the community of SWRP and the greater story than my "personal success" on a roleplaying website - so I believe I am well positioned to creating interesting stories and the potential for challenging dynamics for our members, including facing losses in battles, campaigns, and on the senate floor.
If you became FL, would you have a preference for who your AFLs would be? Who would they be and why?
  • [REDACTED]
Where would you like to see your faction go in the story? What goals do you personally envision for your faction? How is this different and interesting to what other FLs may offer?
  • From the moment the timeline information was released, I have been excited about the Republic faction. This is my favorite time period in SW, and I relish the opportunity to finally participate in it. I think I have helped lay out pretty clear paths with the TT for the Republic - the Senate will struggle to balance competing interests, (hopefully) immobilizing it, while the Border Alliance fights thrown war-weariness and half-truths to fight the growing threat of the Sith. Not only am I excited for the spin the members put on the story (do things ever go planned?), but I am excited to foster the exploration of a multitude of roleplaying facets: Core v. Rim, inter-Senate politics, inter-BA politics effecting [REDACTED], relationships both political and military with indie factions, interactions with the Jedi. I am not coming into this timeline with an agenda of ideas I will make happen. I am coming into this with direction for the faction - but a fluid direction that can, and I hope will, be swayed with the interests and roleplaying of our writers.
Being faction leader means having relative autonomy over your faction, including setting the direction and the story of the timeline with other FLs. What makes you the most qualified person for this role?
  • I think that my leadership experience, paired with my ability to be a fair and conscience listener, will allow me to lead the faction effectively. I have a real passion for the faction, as well, which gives me the drive and vision to make sure events progress. When I was FL for the Jedi, I was following GABA - who had led the Jedi a long time, and had a very specific idea about what was going to happen. I was caught in-between that vision and the changing landscape of the timeline, and it was difficult to help the faction gain the justification to go to well. Now, starting from the beginning, I am confident that I will be able to help drive the timeline and overall story, while allowing for members to contribute in decision making and directional changes.
How much time can you dedicate to the position? Can you ensure that you will be able to consistently organize activity for your faction? Are you willing and able to dedicate the time to drive the story without staff involvement?
  • I have the time. I do not have the time to singlehandedly lead the faction, to independently drive the timeline forward, and to roleplay interesting characters. I do have the time to facilitate and effectively lead a team in doing that. My leadership style is not top-down: it relies on a collective that has responsibility to one another, and in my opinion, that allows for a greater expression of vision/expression and more interesting and effective leadership. That doesn't mean I won't be very active, and fulfill my requirements as a faction leader, but it does mean that I will rely on the people around me to help me lead the faction to the best of my/our abilities.
Do you understand and accept that, by becoming FL, you will be leading the faction that was developed by the think tank, and the staff will be tightly regulating any changes made to how the faction is set up and organized?
  • Yes. It was helpful that I was a part of the discussions and wrote the write-ups.

Good luck my man, and to all the others who apply.

I currently am debating on making a character for the BA or not. I will PM you my idea(s) and I encourage other to do the same.

Still waiting on the fluff for the BA before I start creating my character, hence the lack of BA activity on my end of things.

Hello everyone!

For those who haven't seen, I have the good fortune of being the Republic's Faction Leader for the new timeline. If you have any questions, concerns, or even if you just want to chat about the faction, feel free to send me a PM!

If you want me to go over your character profile pre-timeline switch, feel free to post the link here and tag me! That way we can make your formal approval quicker once the new timeline hits, and get you writing faster. I'm sure there will be a few tweeks once you see the write-ups.

So everyone is on the same page, all members sans AFLs will start out at the base-level rank. The rank will be open to any member, however, who demonstrates their character and they should fill such a role.

@Braden Drake @Archer @Jira @Praetor @Caine @DangerousTinkerer @Aleksandr @Livgardist @Crim @Bauren @Dymion

We would still love to have you join us for the new timeline! I have started working on some of the opening events and missions for the Border Alliance, and I am SO stoked. I am definitely going to be writing right along with them.

I am working on two BA characters. One is a Senator and the other is a soldier. I am assuming I can call the Senator, Senator but what can I call the soldier? Right now I am calling him a Major. I mean for him to be a Commander of the planetary militia my other character is the Senator of (they are Grandfather/Grandson).

[Link to BA character #1] - This is the one I talked to you about being the military detachee to Mandalore. Still waiting on the TT to truly finish him.
[Link to BA character #2] - More of a work in progress, but the basics are there. He's an alien entrusted with the Bandomeer military.

It would be grand if we already knew what this starting rank would be. I assume something like Private? Both these characters are too young for an AFL rank.
