KNIGHTS OF REN

Part I: Reckoning

SHAKY BEGINNINGS

The Knights of Ren were reborn on Phaeda and announced themselves on Ukio. But these Knights were disunified. Each member followed his or her own ambition and cared little what the others did so long as they were not in the way. The name was merely a means to an end. A way to inflict carnage upon the galaxy without the Sector Rangers or the Jedi Order realizing that the Sith Eternal still lurked in the shadows. As a consequence, the newly-christened Knights were little better than marauders.

Meanwhile, the dark side of the Force was still beginning to awaken after having slept in the galaxy for nearly a century. The Sith Lord Darth Plagueis once said that the dark side had to take an interest in a being in order for them to fully command it—to guide its currents and snuff out the light. And for near a century, it had taken little interest in the Sith Eternal, leaving them mere shadows of the Sith Order they sought to replace. But with the return of the Knights, the dark side is stirring again, and they may only have one chance to prove that they are worthy of bearing its mantle.

It is said that the ancient Knights of Ren went where the dark side beckoned. They fought its battles, protected its tools, and ate what it sent them. There was no concern for the morality of their actions. No thought of ambition or consequence. They were its servants, and so they were provided for. Having anticipated their return, an echo has gone out in the Force. A call to service. To battle. And now, the new Knights of Ren will have their union tested to see if they are worthy of the name.

All will be faced with a choice. The choice of who they want to become — to each other — to the dark side — to the Ren...

THE STORY

On the forgotten Sith world of Khar Delba, something has stirred, sending out a disturbance in the Force that threatens the exposure of the Sith Eternal. Melkor Damask contacts the Master of the Knights of Ren, Myr Khandros, and tasks his former apprentice and his Knights with venturing to Khar Delba to hunt down an ex-cultist named Valak who left the cult over ideological differences years ago.

In the intervening period, Valak uncovered a fortress dating back to the age of the Sith Brotherhood, belonging to an ancient Sith Master named Tor Vallum, where he amassed control of a horde of deadly Sith warbeasts. Warbeasts whom, without their old masters, had grown and spread and were now rampant across the planet, which itself reeked of the dark side of the Force. Spending his self-imposed exile on Khar Delba, Valak became increasingly self-important and dangerous, and so the Sith Eternal can ignore him no further.

Melkor’s intelligence suggests that Valak may be attempting to initiate an old Sith rite that would involve the death of every living thing on the planet, thus creating a wound in the Force that would certainly alert the Jedi to the presence of the dark side of the Force, as well as tip them off to the existence of an organization capable of performing the ancient techniques of the Sith. The Knights goal, then, is simple:

They must go to Khar Delba, kill Valak, and erase any traces he left of his connection to the Sith Eternal cult. But this will be no simple assassination mission. The dangerous ex-cultist has at his fingertips a horde of twisted lyleks, warped rancor, and packs of crazed tuk’ata that the Knights of Ren will need to cut through to reach him at the apex of Tor Vallum’s fortress. The planet is also strong in the dark side and likes to play mind tricks on its victims. The Knights will find themselves tested mentally and physically to accomplish their goal. More than that, they will need to make a few critical decisions at this early phase of their partnerships:

Will they be simple proxies for the Sith Eternal? Or will they rise above that purpose, work together, and truly become the Knights of Ren?

KNIGHTS OF REN

Reckoning

The SITH ETERNAL remain hidden throughout the galaxy. They are all that remain of the Sith tradition and are the key to the future of the dark side.

Threatening their secrecy, the former cultist VALAK has raised an army of Sithspawn and prepares an ancient ritual to tear open the Force and reveal the dark side to the Jedi for the first time in over a century.

To prevent the cult from being exposed, the newly-formed KNIGHTS OF REN embark on a treacherous mission to Khar Delba that will test their faith, their identity, and the strength of their newfound unity…

STORY ARC PROPOSAL

This story arc is just that. A story arc. There is no immediate reward from this—no advanced tech, no fame and glory, no super spooky Sith artifact waiting to be claimed at the end. I don’t know how many threads it will take to tell, and I don’t know what will happen at the end. That’s up to us.

The Knights of Ren are currently what you would expect them to be—what you can argue they were originally meant to be: a bunch of random cultists who don’t particularly like each other and have only come together because of their impatience with the Sith Eternal’s inaction. They’re proxies. But they are proxies that have taken on a name. An ancient name. One the dark side of the Force will not ignore.

And that’s the point. This story arc is meant to force our character to make a decision. Are they just proxies? Or are they going to truly become the Knights of Ren? To that end, I have set up a framework that will force our characters to confront these questions. On Khar Delba, they will find death if they choose to go off on their own. They have to work together, to put aside their own ambitions, if they want to survive. Where does that mentality lead them? Do they grow together? Are they torn apart?

It is also meant to keep us from being just a posse of people out to cause trouble in plots or to force conflict. The Knights are anarchists, so that makes sense to a degree. But without a story to support us, we’re directionless and our characters will form no real bond (good or bad) with one another. This story arc will allow us to build connections with each other, build up a personal history, flesh out our characters, and find their voices. It will force them to forge an identity and we can then use what they learn here as a launchpad to their future interactions with the overall story of the site.

It will take work. It will take storytelling for the sake of storytelling. But, if we go through with it, I believe the end result will be limitless possibilities for us and our characters. @Arclight @Wit @Faded @Versok @Ecclessey @Darasuum @Bran
