A MONASTIC ORDER OF HOLY WARRIORS

"Deliver us from death to victory; from falsehood to truth.
Fill our minds with faith; our bodies with fury.
May the will of Shalharra be done this day.
"
– Battle Prayer

HISTORY OF THE ORDER
In a much older version of Alsakan civilization, when the people lived down upon the surface of the world, and Shalharra's glory was seen plainly in every day life, a monastic order of knights known as the Knights of Shalharra existed in great numbers. Originally, they were the primary military force, though they acted more like security forces, or royal guards for the Vicar Lharra and the Council of Elders. They were a symbol to the people of Alsakan, the chosen warriors of Shalharra. These knights lived their lives in servitude, and therefore had no worldly possessions, abstained from any sexual activity, and focused on only one goal: the will of Shalharra. The Vicar Lharra and her wishes were their only concern, for the Vicar was a direct line to their Goddess and Holy Mother.

Now at the height of Alsakan civilization, their role in society and culture has changed drastically, though the Order still cling to their original ideals and codes of conduct. No longer are they the prime military force, but they exist outside the realms of the military. The knights answer only to the Church and act above the law, for they have direct authority from the Vicar herself. Most Knights typically adorn their uniforms with red (Shalharra's true colour, that of blood), and display the symbol of Alsakan: a solid gold circle with an equally gold ring around it, symbolizing the relationship between world and Xenvaer.

THE KNIGHTS OF SHALHARRA

Grand Master
The Grand Master is usually appointed for life by the Vicar Lharra. He is one who showed great dedication to the Order, and displayed leadership capabilities way beyond the norm. The Grand Master leads the Order of Knights from behind the scenes, rarely entering battle himself. Typically, the Grand Master also acts as a personal bodyguard for the Vicar.

Knight
The Knights of Shalharra number at just over a few hundred, and act primarily as an advanced attack force, meant to strike fear into the hearts of the enemy. Their life-expectancy is relatively short due to their drive and gallantry. They are fearless warriors, intent on fighting for their Goddess and Mother to the death. Some knights may also act as royal guards, taking on a more ceremonial role.

Initiate
Initiates of the Knights of Shalharra are those who have not yet come of age, or those who have yet to pass the trials into knighthood along with their fellows. They make up the bulk of the Order, and are essentially knights-in-training. In times of war, initiates would fulfil the role of pack mule, carrying equipment for their superiors in battle.
