So apparently the design for Kylo Ren's lightsaber dates back to the scourge of Malachor.

Does anyone have a date for that event? Or any idea when it may have happened?

The reason I ask is because currently people are saying that he learnt how to make it from a holocron. What if it was Snoke who told him how to make it?

Snoke said he watched the Rise and Fall of the galactic empire however the plan was put in place long before its actual ascension.

Is it possible that Kylo didn't use a holocron because snoke is ancient and utilized that design in his own era?

The Great Scourge of Malachor was thousands of years before the film. That's the most we know about it at this point.

So it's unlikely that snoke was alive then, unless it's a race we have never seen before.

He could very well be human if he was using the force to somehow preserve his life. We don't know yet.

I honestly don't think Snoke was alive then. But it could be true that he was.

Maybe Snoke had or found an old Jedi or Sith holocron then gave it to Ren

Kylo also used that design for practical purposes too. He had a cracked kyber crystal, so the mini-blades on the side were exhaust from the unstable lightsaber.

So the resemblance to the classic crossguaed might just be a happy accident?

One theory about how Snoke could've lived long enough to be around then and my idealistic hopes that will allow the Old Republic to be canon

Edit:: just realized that Tsunami already subscribes to this theory so guess now I know why he made this thread. Also this is getting really tinfoilly really fast but if the aforementioned theory is true then is it possible that the Scourge of Malachor is in some way the new canon version of the mass shadow generator and all that stuff?

Recanonizing the Old Republic/KOTOR stuff would be a major headache simply because it references so many other associated series/novels etc. We're more likely to see a canon KOTOR reboot, or (more probable considering its commercial success) a canon TOR-era MMO once the first title stops being as profitable.

What I'm thinking is less a pure canonization of KOTOR/any of that stuff, but more like if a Dave Filloni run series was made in that era, it'd incorporate things from Kotor and all that, much like how Delta squad was indirectly made semi-canon through their cameo in the clone Wars, or how Thrawn is now a canon figure through Rebels. So it'd be more like a reboot kinda thing, just through the medium of an animated series. So like we could see the Mass Shadow Generator being activated in the series, but instead of being how it was in KOTOR2, it could be whatever that device was that Maul tried to activate in Rebels and it would have the effect shown there.

Or you know, something like that lol

My opinon is that Kylo took the influence for his weapon from a jedi holocron Luke may have recovered, seeing as how he is weidling one when Luke's jedi temple is attacked. Also, even though it was the EU, there habe been jedi that used the crossguard lightsaber.

I think that the whole crossguard design thingy-thing came from a Jedi named "Ban Bananacloak" based on this SW account I once read that kinda had me preeeetty convinced. In it, Ban fights off mercenaries and men-at-arms on this planet or that one who are pursuing his charge, a girl named Ayra, because she escaped from their fortress. Ban journeyed with some outlaws and some former knights and came across a lightsaber. But he was so used to using his longsword, which had a crossguard hilt, naturally, that even after being trained by a Force-user (can't recall if Jedi or 'Neutral' or some such) how to use said lightsaber, he couldn't get used to it until he 'fused' one with design with the other.

Ban went on to found the Order of [insert name here that I forgot] and the 'crossguard lightsaber' became the standard.
