Saeros

A Jedi Knight of the Order, Saeros was one of the few Jedi of the Shadow sect that remained faithful and never walked the line between Light and Dark. During his years of service, he witnessed firsthand the fall of many of his Shadow brethren and the sinister rise of the Exiles. Though Saeros exuded aloofness and ambivalence, he cared deeply for the Jedi and the people he served. Even with his final breath, Saeros forgave the Exiles who slew him on the doorstep of the Devaron Jedi Temple. Though few know for certain, it is rumoured that his spirit still lives on in the Force, appearing to certain Jedi to guide them in their walk in the Light.

Born on Rishi and raised on the Outer Rim planet, Saeros’ way of life was interrupted violently when his family was slaughtered at the hand of a wandering band of Exiles. Saved only by the will of the Force, a Jedi of his kin found the remains of Saeros’ home and rescued the young Rishii, taking him to Ossus. Trained as a Jedi Knight in the Order, he joined the fight against the Exiles and found he fit best in the sect of Jedi Shadows. Though his zeal against the Dark Side never wavered, Saeros never went so far as to fall from the Light to achieve his goal.

Although completely fluent in Basic, as demonstrated in his final words and on multiple other occasions, Saeros spoke almost entirely in his native tongue. Though he never explained why he did so, it has been speculated that he wished to continue the traditions of the Rishii. Indeed, it was rare when the white-feathered bird spoke at all. Instead, Saeros was far more often seen simply watching his surroundings, his large jet-black eyes constantly observing everything around him.

The Tragedy of Ilum had left Saeros feeling without purpose and full of doubt. Seeking to refresh his mind and strengthen his resolve, Saeros returned to Rishi and visited the remains of his home nest. Seeing the ruins after it was raided by Exiles years ago, he met a Jedi Crusader named Hlodovic by chance. After cleansing the place with the Light, Saeros left with new determination. Finding the trail of an Exile, he travelled to Hemelder Aurek where he aided several Jedi in fending off monstrous Rathtars. One Jedi, Alais Drast, was nearly consumed were it not for Saeros pulling her from the beast’s clutches. Many months later, he was called back to Ossus by the Jedi Councillors. There he witnessed the infamous Trial of Ossus for Alais Drast. Having fallen utterly to the Dark Side, she was sentenced to exile with her connection to the Force severed. Helpless, Saeros watched as the corrupted girl slaughtered Councillor Ryell Vao and escaped with the help of the man who would one day become Darth Kravos. None knew that day they had let the future Empress of the Sith Empire escape.

Three days later, he attended the funeral for the fallen Councillor, with the ceremony being lead by Councillor Cadef Sige. Saeros’ determination renewed, he and Nora Grazioso set out to find Tanda Winters. Being unsuccessful in finding the Councillor, they returned to Ossus to attend a convocation in response to the growing threat of the Exiles. Nothing was decided — causing frustration in Saeros. He travelled once again to Rishi, where he met an Exile Rishii and decided to write a book to aid his fellow Jedi in following the path of the Light.

Stopping at Ossus, Saeros finished writing what he wished in Caladglær, taking it with him as he was posted to the Jedi Temple on Devaron. Little did he realize this posting was not going to be routine — for while he was stationed there the Exiles attacked the Temple. Though accompanied by four other Jedi including Nora, the only one he could truly call his friend, they failed to stop the assault of the Exiles. Saeros, along with Knights Dragen Wrexyl and Liam Valros, were slain in the battle. In his final breath, even as he was cut down by the very woman he saved from the clutches of a Rathtar, Saeros forgave Alais for her deeds. The Rishii passed away that day in peace.

Though neither a remarkably strong Jedi nor renowned in his actions, Saeros’ memory lived on through his friend Nora Grazioso. Many years later, after his death, his Brylark staff and Caladglær were found in the ruins of the Devaron Temple. And though only few can say for certain, sometimes Jedi have found their visions accompanied by the visage of a pure-white owl, guiding them in the ways of the Force as a beacon of the Light itself.
