Right, so this is a thread to brainstorm up new guidelines for training in the Republic. I've already talked a bit to Johnny about this, but I want more input.

What I've got for the new guidelines -and these are rough basics, so bear with me- is this:

Effective immediately, all characters joining the Republic Military for the first time will be entered into the roster at the lowest rank possible. In order to become an Officer or Non-Commissioned Officer, you will have to put your character through a training thread in the Academy. [Working title.]

In the Academy, your character will be given tactical and procedural training to ensure that your character is completely combat ready. The training thread will last a minimum of 40 posts, with no exceptions. After completing the Academy, you will be required to demonstrate your tactical knoweledge by completing a mission in the form of a randomly assigned combat simulation. You will be assigned a rank following following a review of your performance within the simulation.

However, if you are making a character of a rank higher than Captain, special rules apply. Due to the power associated with high military ranks, you'll be required to submit an application to myself or Johnny. We will review it, and if we approve, we will assign a simulation thread to you for you to complete. If we are satisfied with your performance in the thread, you'll have earned your rank.

Now, this is all very tentative. I'd greatly appreciate feedback on this, in the interests of making it as fair as possible.

I feel this method can be applied to Sector 13 as well, although edited a big. I must ask though. Is there a limit to how many actual agents there can be? And has there been any sort of training procedure in the past to graduate initiates to Agent status?

I think the limit to S13's number of agents is more of a 'when you feel you have enough' thing, rather than a set limit. And no, there's never been any sort of training that I can recall.

I would imagine realistically we'd need alot of agents to canvas the entire galaxy, but... realistic doesnt neccesarily apply in Starwars...

Ive been thinking up a routine for S13 training, and it might involves some sort of kidnapping....

I do like the method your proposing though, it helps to keep people who need more experience from getting to higher ranks.

So when a new member joins, they don't necessarily have to do training to get involved? They can just remain at the lowest rank? If so, then I definitely approve of that. I also like the special requirements for those training to be especially high-ranked... getting faction leaders more familiar with their officers is an awesome idea. I just hope that you won't get too picky with it, or the Republic might not have enough officers.

Other then that, I think the 40-post minimum might be a bit much for a training thread... I personally find it hard making them last long, anyway.

I disagree. I was chatting the Bac about this the other day. When i was in charge of the Republic I tried to make all new members go through in-house training at a boot camp or an academy of some sort before they could progress. It did not work.

Have you considered having a system where all your PC NCOs are, say, Sergeant or Corporal and in charge of a platoon or a squad. When a new member joins they're made a private and for a mission or two they are assigned into a PC NCO's squad, basically to "learn on the job" how to RP in a battle. Once the NCO is satisfied they're competent, they're promoted to Corporal or Sergeant, depending on their competence, and have a squad of they're own. Do likewise with the Officer corps. Your officers are Captains, Majors or Colonels, or even Generals, directing battles. New guys are assigned to them as Lieutenants to learn how to do it and once they're satisfied they're promoted ahead.

You do the same thing with the Navy, having everyone as a ship commander (at the rank of, say, Commander or Captain) or a commander of a squadron of ships (at the rank of say, Captain or Commodore), and a new guy as a Lieutenant is assigned to them for an engagement or two until they get the hang of it and, as before, are promoted to a ship of their own.

One of the problems, especially with the Republic military, is it's far to broad, rank wise for the RP. I really think the best way would be to make there far fewer roles for PCs. You can keep all the ranks you want, but the tasks the PCs are trying to carry out are too broad.
