DESCRIPTION
The Pinook armed starhopper is a class of ultra-light starfighter produced by Joraan Drive Systems. Originally designed during the Imperial era, the Pinook was an attempt by its manufacturer to circumvent highly restrictive laws and taxes related to the production and sale of military equipment put in place by the Empire. As such, the Pinook's design incorporated almost no military-grade parts, allowing the ship to be classified as a starhopper, a type of small, single-seat spacecraft intended for civilian use. Although this did allow Joraan Drive Systems to dodge many Imperial restrictions on sale and distribution, the resulting craft was inferior to most other starfighters on the market at the time.

The Pinook is a small craft, 14.79 meters in length and piloted by a single individual from a relatively spacious cockpit with good visibility. Armament consists solely of 2 fixed light laser cannons in the nose. Top speed is 95 MGLT, slightly slower than the contemporary Imperial TIE/LN or Rebel T-65B X-Wing, with maneuverability being somewhere between the two of them. The Pinook is equipped with a light deflector shield for defense, but the craft has an infamously weak hull; once the shield goes down, it only takes 1 or 2 good hits to detonate a Pinook. The Pinook is equipped to travel interstellar distances, however, incorporating a class 2 hyperdrive and a navicomputer.

Though the Pinook enjoyed some success during the Imperial era by virtue of being the cheapest, most easily licensed combat ship on the market, the design did not fare well afterward. Although it kept its civilian certification, New Republic-era easing of military equipment laws gave the Pinook a raft of new competition almost overnight. Joraan Drive Systems did manage to turn their fortunes around somewhat, however, by focusing on the enthusiast market; though not a hot military ship, it was readily available to civilians, with wannabe starfighter jockeys unable to get the real thing buying Pinooks instead. This small but steady sales avenue has managed to keep the Pinook in production up into the present.

It should be noted that in addition to enthusiasts, Pinooks are relatively popular with small-time pirates and mercenaries, who are able to buy them on the open market without raising suspicion. Without a good pilot at the controls, however, a Pinook is generally no match for a proper starfighter.

LEGALITY
Legal. Pinooks are legally classified as starhoppers, and are only subject to civilian licensing requirements.

INTENT
To create a standard ultra-light starfighter.
