History of the Republic

The history of the Republic might as well be as old as time itself. The Republic, an institution of legend, has existed for over twenty thousand years and has governed its corner of the galaxy in good times and in bad. Now, the galaxy faces a new threat, and only by understanding the past will it be able to save the future.

The Great Republic

Thousands of years ago, the most prominent worlds in the Galactic Core came together to form a new galactic government: the Republic, a trade union and central government where citizens from all across the galaxy could come to speak to their peers and solve the problems of the day in a democratic fashion. The Republic has stood for centuries as the embodiment of those ideas, as its member worlds seek to better themselves and the galaxy.

In its earliest days, the Republic fulfilled that charter in peace. From its capital of Chandrila, home to some of the galaxy's greatest thinkers, the Republic led its corner of the galaxy in galactic law and policy, including the criminalization of sentient slavery. The Galactic Senate, founded as the bedrock of democracy, became the primary regulators of the trade and commerce that was vital to the Republic's existence. Together, senators helped the economy grow and solved border disputes without needless violence. The galaxy prospered.

As time went on, however, the Republic suffered a string of devastating conflicts. It was not the Republic's fault, of course. The rise of the Dark Lords of the Sith was a change in galactic power that few could have predicted. The Sith Empire was on the march to war, and for millennia the Republic was forced to defend itself. This made many world's cynical of the Republic's leadership over the galaxy. Poor leadership and several breakdowns in negotiations gave voice to those who did not care for the galactic institution's power. Even in an era of planetary control, there were those who had been marginalized by the majority requirement of the Senate, and became dismayed about the effectiveness of the galactic leader. New and old threats alike chipped away at the security and authority of the Republic, calling into question the need and effectiveness of such an institution.

Still, however, the Republic continued. The Chancellor of the Senate, previously little more than the chairperson of the meeting, took on an expanded role in leading the Republic. As divisions between Core and Rim worlds heightened, and as threats appeared within and on the edges of Republic space, it became a struggle for the leaders of the Senate and their allies to keep the Republic glued together. Finally, one hundred years ago, the Republic and the Jedi defeated the Sith Empire. It seemed, at last, that the threat of the Sith was gone.

Rise of the Border Alliance

Though the Sith Empire was gone, the Sith culture and civilization continued on. One hundred years after the fall of the old empire, the Sith Brotherhood rose to take its place and made advances towards Republic space. The Republic's northernmost territories felt the threat of an impending Sith invasion and rallied together to try to convince the Galactic Senate to raise a new Republic Army to stop the Sith, but the Senate refused. Peace had come at such a high cost, and the Senate was not willing to end it. To them, the Sith Brotherhood was little more than a ragged band of pretenders desperately clinging to the past.

Without the Republic's assistance, the northern territories banded together on the planet Bandomeer and formed the Border Alliance, pulling all of the resources and soldiers from their local militias and defense forces. While still subject to all Republic law, these worlds signed on to a defense pact with one another; if one world was attacked, they would all mobilize to its defense. This reaction would not be appropriate for all instances, however. Without a central military, the Border Alliance recognized there would be smaller threats that would need to be dealt with. A small task force was created under the name of Defiant Squadron, a collection of infantry soldiers and pilots that would respond to these threats in addition to major invasions.

Defiant Squadron was, itself, a rag-tag collection of individuals needing only citizenship within one of the Border Alliance worlds and a desire to defend their home. Retired military personnel, active combat veterans from the top of planetary food-chains to the bottom, and even those just wanting to defend their home constituted their ranks. No matter who they were or where they came from - criminal or decorated officer - all were welcome and treated equally in the ranks of Defiant Squadron.

With the threat of the Sith hanging over them, the relationship between the Border Alliance and the Senate was at times beneficial, and at times frustrating. Finally after much argument the Border Alliance was fully acknowledged and reformed into the Grand Army of the Republic. Split up and organized more comprehensively and overseen more directly by those in the senate they now have even more backing to defend Republic space. While the Grand Army of the Republic has navy, marine, army, and special warfare branches together they make up the main opposition to any outsider threat that may do ill to the Galactic Republic.
