Thoroughly enjoyed Rogue One. From tone to cinematography, to the acting and main cast, it felt right. Reminded me why I loved the series and put me on an OT binge. Overwhelmingly a positive experience, and one I have very few complaints about.

Questions for everyone:

1. At what point did you know everybody was going to die?

2. Do you think the alliance showing up at all caused a lot of deaths? Could they have gotten the schematics otherwise?

For me, I didn't look into any Rogue One info before seeing it. I was honestly surprised that every single character died and didn't realize it till way later into the movie lol

I was shocked in all honesty. They didn't need to die, which is why it had such a fantastic impact. The whole film felt hopeless at the end, until we saw the plans had made it out safely, all in all a great way to end a movie. (I would like to think that you could watch a new hope directly afterwards, and canon wise, the start of new hope is three to four hours after the end of rogue one).

As for the rebels and the casualties they caused, again - it makes sense. The rebellion had to do bad things, maybe even evil things, to defeat the empire. If anything, it made the rebellion vs the empire much less cut and dry.

Did the ends justify the means? In rogue one as a stand alone - no, in the wider series, certainly a yes.

All in all, the character death and the methods of the rebellion made the film much more interesting; it gave it substance and developed on the rebellion more as a morally grey force lead by a collection of cowards and hopeful idealists, rather than "Perfect Snowflakes" as they can appear in the OT.

I all ways suspect total party wipe out

Rebel fleet showing up insured a mission success. There was zero way they could of stolen the planes and got of the surface in one piece. A better planed assult may of achieved more but we will never know.

1. I figured it out after Baze died I think. When the first two died I was like "ok that's who we'll lose" and then when he died I realized it was going to be everyone.

2. No I don't. I think that was the best chance they had, especially with such resistance from the Alliance council.

The end part in which they asked for try location of the Admiral, and recieved "He's already on his way to Scarif" was great.

Was he related to ackbar do we know?

What was the order of deaths again? I know I was still expecting people to survive late cause I honestly was expecting the defector pilot (another complaint for the movie, I remember like none of their names lol) was about to throw away the grenade that killed him. All in all it hit me really late that everyone was gonna die. Around Baze's death would probably be a good guess though.

Also yeah the plans would never have made it off without the fleet, especially considering that they would've had no one to transmit too without them there.

Edit :: is it a bad thing that even when literally everyone was in the process of dying, and everyone did die in the end, I still knew that Cassian hadn't been killed in his fake death.

I thought that atleast Jyn would survive, they could have written in a believable escape for her.

I realized Jyn and Cassian were going to die when they walked off the communications tower. It's because they knew it at that moment too, so the whole tone of the movie shifted around that.

The Rebel fleet's support ensured the plan's success. If the fleet did not arrive, then Rogue One would not have been able to transmit the plans: Scarif is deep in Imperial territory, if I recall correctly, so it's unlikely that it could be picked up by a local sympathizer. Trying to escape Scarif with the plans in hand was completely out of the question because the TIEs can completely shred the cargo shuttle before it leaves the atmosphere on top of the fact that the Gate can close well before they make it there. Scarif was a suicide mission from the start.

On the topic of painting shades of gray on the Rebellion, I loved the moment when Cassian approached Jyn with the volunteers composed of people who couldn't turn their back on the Rebellion after all their dark deeds. It made the earlier scene where Cassian shot the informant in the back feel more than just trying to create a more mature story. These were people who wanted the opportunity to redeem themselves.

I hadn't looked at any of the Rogue One info before hand either but I kind of suspected they would all die especially since if they didn't it would be as easy to explain there
absence. Actually, it may sound awful, but I would have been very disappointed in the movie if they hadn't all died. Going into the movie I wanted to get to know the characters and then feel the hopelessness up until the plans were beamed. I wasn't at all disappointed though!

It's possible the alliance showing up caused more deaths (at least the deaths of those that showed up) and them showing up led to the shield being closed. However the ship they came in on blew up so its hard to say if any of Jyn's group would have survived.

What was the order of deaths again? I

If I remember correctly it was K-S2O, Rook (the defector), Imwe, Blaze, and Jyn and Cassian.

Welp. Idk then, maybe I thought he'd survive cause of how many people had died already.

So uh yeah, definitely figured out the whole "everyone dies" thing pretty late.

So I've seen this film three times now, and for some reason, Vader's neck bothers me.

Also did anyone see Chopper and The Ghost from Rebels? As well as hear in the Rebel Base a "General Syndulla" over the speaker?

Me too and I think I know why. While part of it could be that the actor is different and bigger I think the primary reason is because the lip of the helmet is covered by the cape in the OT.
