Overview

Konstallen is a harsh world, covered over by oppressive thunder-bearing clouds and choked with ash and dust. Decimated by a cataclysmic event eons ago, the world is only one step from being completely uninhabitable. The arid soil is lacking in nutrients and what few bodies of water are present are salty and brackish, forcing the locals to extensively filter the water before using it. The wildlife is as vicious as the land itself; monsters such as the Konstallen Wolf -a furless nocturnal canine, with chitin-like plates covering a leathery hide- roam the land, freely preying upon man and beast alike.

The flora is hardy to an extreme, consisting mostly of underground funguses that have adapted to Konstallen’s near-constant cloud cover and chilly temperatures. While forests of massive trees are easily found in the borderline temperate Staub Basin in the deep south, they are the only flora of their kind on Konstallen; their scarcity ensures that wood is an extremely rare resource, thus making metals and plastics more desirable as construction materials. In addition to the Staub Trees, some varieties of resilient grasses manage to grow in the somewhat fertile Tallicht Plains south of the Eisen Gap. These grasses provide an abundant and surprisingly fast-growing source of food to the herbivorous residents of Konstallen.

Although at first glance, the arid world may seem completely inhospitable and worthless, beneath the windswept surfaces of the land are rich veins of ore and deposits of fossil fuels. Precious metals and gemstones are found in the volcanic highlands of the north, while the band of mountains, low hills, and plains surrounding the Eisen Gap contain easily accessed reserves of all ores essential to the creation of a heavily industrialized society.

The Land

Konstallen’s population divides their world into five basic parts. The first region is the Black Sea; an ocean covering roughly fifteen percent of Konstallen’s surface and containing the bulk of the world’s surface water. The Black Sea is dotted with islands, but the extreme salt content of the water makes it completely uninhabitable to any manner of wildlife; as such, it requires intensive filtration and desalinization before it can be made fit for human consumption.

The second region, the Tallicht Plains, lay directly on the equator of Konstallen. Bordered by the Black Sea on the east, flanked by treacherous mountains to the west and south, and blocked by the rugged Eisen Gap to the north, the Tallicht Plains is a grassy region no less than three hundred miles square. It is the source of almost one hundred percent of Helghan’s food production, and as such, it is guarded valiantly by the Konstallen. It is gifted with heavy natural defenses; the intense and near-ceaseless thunder and windstorms hanging in the upper atmosphere over the Tallicht Plains make any and all attempts to assault the Valley via orbital transport a suicidal venture, and forces other aerial transports down into the range of the ring of anti-aircraft defenses that defend the Tallicht Plains.

The third area is the Eisen Gap: A two hundred-mile long ravine roughly two miles in width and one mile deep from beginning to end, the Gap was formed generations ago when Konstallen was a geologically unstable planet. While geologists still argue over the exact mechanisms that formed the Eisen Gap, nobody can argue the vast wealth the Gap possesses. With readily accessible deposits of metal ores and fossil fuels, the Gap served as a springboard for Konstallen industrial development. To this day, it is still heavily exploited by Konstallen’s industries.

The fourth noteworthy region is the Staub Basin in the deep south. A thousand miles from the Eisen Gap and Tallicht Plains, the Basin is surrounded by a semi-circle of mountains; it is far removed from any civilization. Inside the Basin, life flourishes. Deer-like herbivores graze on simple grasses and brushes, a handful of predatory birds feast upon small rodents and lizards, and the Konstallen Wolf roams in packs. Due to its isolation, it is rarely visited by the local populace, though it‘s frequently used as training ground by the military.

The fifth and final region is the Niemandsland; the region north of the equator. It’s name, meaning ‘No-man’s Land’ in the modern Konstallen language, is a very suiting one. Niemandsland is a barren and inhospitable area that consists almost entirely of frigid plateaus, treacherous mountains, and rocky deserts. While the wildlife sticks to the more hospitable southern regions, the Helghast themselves have established a handful of small towns and cities in Niemandsland. The relatively low cloud cover and lack of high winds in the Niemandsland has ensured that there are no shortage of starports or military bases in the region; even the capital city’s Starport is located within the Niemandsland, and is connected to Erwartung via several massive maglev train lines.

The Climate

Konstallen’s climate is bleak and inhospitable. While the weather tends to be warm in the South, averaging sixty degrees Fahrenheit, temperatures north of the Equator rarely exceeds thirty-five degrees. When the world’s frequent windstorms brings these two temperature fronts into contact, the result is monstrous and near-endless thunderstorms that are focused right on the equator. The foul equatorial weather makes it virtually impossible to bring starships in through the equator.

To make matters worse, clouds of extremely light dust bound together with tiny amounts of water and charged with minute amounts of static electricity chokes the skies over almost every region of Konstallen on a daily basis. While the clouds are confined to a high-altitude region of airspace about four miles off the ground, they present a formidable deterrent to incoming spacecraft as the dust will wreak havoc on any ship that passes through it by choking up thrusters, disrupting sensors, clinging to viewports, and more.

Because the dense cloud cover chokes out most of the sunlight, visitors to Konstallen find the world to be a dark and depressing place. However, the Helghast have embraced their environment, and even gifted their sun with the name ‘Hoffnung’, their word for hope.

The Capital

Erwartung is the capital city of Konstallen. A sprawling industrial behemoth, Erwartung has been built in the most unusual of locations: Directly over the Eisen Gap. Countless generations ago, when the sleeper ship carrying the Helghast’s ancestors crashed within the confines of the Gap, Erwartung was founded by the settlers as they tore apart their sleeper ship and built around it a new civilization.

Steadily, Erwartung has grown outwards and up. Great support pillars forged of the strongest steel were driven into the ground and walls of the gap where Erwartung was founded and the city grew ever-higher, with a level being added every generation. At the heart of the city was their sleeper ship, its power core still providing energy to the descendants of the Sedonan people's ancestors.

Now, hundreds of years later, Erwartung has climbed out of the gap and onto the surface. A sprawling city holding no less than five million men, women, and children, Erwartung is the very heart of Konstallen. No wood is to be found in the city’s construction; concrete and steel are everywhere, giving the city a very rugged and industrial appearance. As with all Helghast creations, Erwartung is a city that values function above all else.

Despite the very rough appearance of Erwartung, it is a safe and comfortable city. The Sedonans take great pride in their works of engineering and their efficiency; even Erwartung’s poorest districts are kept clean of debris and refuse, and the lower levels of the city are inspected for wear and damage on a tight schedule. A well-maintained public transit system keeps goods and personnel flowing through the city, while massive mag-lev trains run day in and day out to keep raw materials and finished goods moving in and out of the city.

Finally, Erwartung has an easily defended position; it is situated on the only easily passed region of the Eisen Gap, and thus controls one of the few navigable passages into the Tallicht Plains. To the north of Erwartung is the Niemansland, where lessened cloud cover and low winds make space access easy. With ready access to both food and space travel, and surrounded with heavy industry and raw resources, Erwartung is a city with room to expand for generations to come.

Government

While historically a democratic republic, Konstallen is currently ruled by a military dictatorship under the command of Commandant Steiner. Some twenty years ago, Steiner lead fanatical right-wing elements of the Konstallen Army in a violent and bloody coup d’etat which saw the utter destruction and permanent dissolution of the Konstallen Council. Since then, Steiner has forcefully absorbed most of Konstallen’s industries and pressured them into accepting government control, and has been relying very heavily on secret police and military lockdowns to keep the populace under control.

Out of necessity, Steiner has also imprisoned many of the Konstallen Self Defense Force’s senior officers, for fear that their loyalty to the Council may lead them to lead a revolt against him. Steiner has also released over seventy percent of the KSDF’s ‘Old Guard’ - that is, lifelong soldiers who served under the officers he imprisoned - and has replaced them with conscripts. As a result, the KSDF is a shadow of its former self, and bitter ex-KSDF soldiers form gangs in the streets. Steiner is terrified of these criminal gatherings, believing them to be the start of a movement to oust him - which is exactly what the Old Guard intend to do.

Military

A somewhat backwards organization, the Konstallen Self Defense Force is unique in the galaxy in that it manages to be inferior to every other force in every way imaginable. From its relatively primitive ballistic weapons to its oversized and undergunned armored vehicles and starships to its archaic horde tactics and extremely inefficient administration, the KSDF is unimpressive in every way and is only effective at subjugating its own people. Consisting of some two hundred and fifty thousand men in two separate branches, the KSDF is very large for a planet with such a low population and thus absorbs a tremendous amount of planetary resources, which leaves the populace bitter and spiteful of the military.

While the Army is laughably bad, the Navy manages to be somewhat respectable in that it is more efficient and makes use of somewhat modern fighters and patrol craft, though the bulk of its capital ships date back to the Alsakan Crisis as Steiner views the navy as unimportant. Consisting of 6 cruisers, 12 destroyers, and 16 corvettes, it's a small force but it's usually enough to keep pirates at bay - usually.

Industry

While Konstallen was once an industrial juggernaut, its vast orbital drydocks and cavernous planetary factories have fallen into disuse under Steiner’s control, as have the mines. What few facilities remain in business are under strict state control, which tends to encourage skilled laborers to flee Konstallen and head into Republic space, where their talents will earn a better wage. Were the planet to be reindustrialized and commercialized once again, it could easily rival more established industrial worlds in terms of raw manufacturing ability.

The mechanics for this battle will be markedly different from what you're used to. Instead of vast swathes of NPC soldiers and entire fleets of warships under the control of a handful of high-ranking PC chars, this battle will focus on tight-knit fireteams and small squads of naval vessels and fighters. This is to make the battle smaller, more intense, and more personal; instead of having a hundred soldiers to command, you might have four or five. Instead of focusing on twenty or thirty ships, you might have one cruiser and two corvettes at your disposal.

It's going to be small, it's going to be quick, and it's going to encourage careful and conservative tactics. Most of all, it's going to encourage personal development and action. To make a video game analogy, instead of the massive and epic battles of Call of Duty or Halo, think of the comparatively tiny squad-based engagements of Gears of War, Rainbow Six, and Mass Effect.

I'm pleased to announce that CARD is finally ready to host its first major multi-faction battle thread! After working through a few details and getting an entirely new planet approved for use by the staff, we're now prepared to kick off a series of small and intense engagements that will span across multiple threads and will, hopefully, involve a plethora of PC's from several different main and indie factions. Now, without further ado, the battles! If you're in a hurry, just scroll down to the spoiler boxes; they contain specific battle info, and the rosters for the battles are just below them. Everything else is just optional reading, though I do recommend a quick skim through the planet write-up.

THE STORY

The people of Konstallen, the Sedonans, have been chafing under the iron fist of their dictator for decades now. Weary of Commandant Steiner's oppressive and policies and sickened by his outrageous use of the military, they have called out to the galaxy for help. A revolt is sweeping across Konstallen's settlements, but Steiner's military is ruthlessly terminating any threat to the stranglehold they have on their world. The Sedonans need help - badly.

The Jedi Order and the shadow corporation known as CARD have launched swift and overwhelming responses to Steiner's brutality. Not one to miss out on a chance to liberate an inner core world from a power-crazed dictator, the Republic has also sent its own peacekeeping force to the region with goals similar to those of the Jedi Order and CARD.

CARD forces, operating through a paramilitary front company known as Hanhe-Kaedar, have been dispatched en masse to deal with the infamous Konstallen Self Defense Force. A spokesman for Hanhe-Kaedar, Admiral Elias Thorne, has stated that the company's goal is to "...ensure the swift and total neutralization of Steiner and his forces while maintaining zero collateral damage."

The Jedi Order, eager to bring justice to Steiner's corrupt administration and compelled to restore peace and order to the isolated world, has dispatched its own force to assist in the permanent removal of Steiner and the re-establishment of democracy on Konstallen. The Order's spokeswoman for the operation had this to say: "Steiner's reign of terror has been overlooked long enough. He will be brought to justice, and he will be tried for the evils that he has committed."

Keen to remove Steiner from power, both for the good of the Sedonan people and as a demonstration of the swiftness and efficiency of the Republic Military, the Republic has sent a task force of its own to stamp out the scourge that is Commandant Steiner and his iron-fisted government. The spokesman for the Republic was quick to point out that the Republic would not stand idly by as innocents were killed, stating, "We aren't going to sit idly by and do nothing as a dictator slaughters his own people. We're going to put an end to this and give the Sedonans back the freedom and peace Steiner stole from them."

What does this mean for you? It means that if you want to jump into a battle thread with a minimum of fuss, have fast-paced fun, and come out with another battle to add to your list of victories, then the Battle of Konstallen is perfect for you.

We're breaking it down into a series of small, fast-paced threads. Instead of the slow and clunky 3 vs 3 or 4vs4 threads favored by most 'Main Battles', we'll be using 2vs2, 2vs1, and 1vs1 battles. This also neatly eliminates the headache caused by big posting orders and OOC disputes; any dispute can be quickly and relatively easily settled as there are few people to speak with, and threads will move quickly because they're much much smaller!

This also means that the size of the battle as a whole is 'scaling' - that means it can be as big or as small as it needs to be! If we only get four people on the attacking side, that's just fine; we'll only have 2 battle threads. If we get 8, perfect! We can have 4 threads! The fighting will just grow larger and larger as we get more and more people.

Now, about the theaters of battle; right now we have three primary theaters planned. They are as follows:

THE BATTLES

In high orbit over Konstallen, nestled between an orbital installation and an asteroid field, the Konstallen Self Defense Force's navy lays in wait. An archaic force consisting of 6 outdated cruisers, 12 destroyers, and 16 corvettes, along with several wings of older heavy fighters and rusting gunboats, the Navy's true strength lies not in its technology but in its sheer numbers.

Perhaps needless to say, the tiny force is barely capable of coping with a pirate raid, let alone a true military strike force. While outgunned and caught completely by surprise, they are not yet outnumbered; the Navy has organized a hasty defense around their space station and inside the local asteroid field, hoping to frighten off their attackers with sheer weight of fire. There are two separate battlegroups; one battlegroup is tucked inside the asteroid field, the other is around the station.

Gaining naval superiority is crucial. With it, Liberating forces will be able to deploy reinforcements to the ground and conduct orbital artillery strikes on KSDF positions, which will help to greatly reduce the length and intensity of the battle. It will also allow the liberators to deploy starfighters into the atmosphere in order to bring down any aerial units the KSDF might deploy. Without naval superiority, liberating ground troops will have a much, much harder go of things.

TOTAL SLOTS:
KSDF: 1/4
Allies: 1/4

Space Station Battle:
Allies: 1/2
KSDF: 1/2

Asteroid Battle:
Allies: 0/2
KSDF: 0/2

In the barren and unforgiving Neimansland to the north of the planetary capital, the KSDF has mobilized armored infantry and helicopters in an attempt to defend the vulnerable spaceports and maglev trains. If captured, the Neimansland Starport will give the attacking force a direct line right to the capital - if the KSDF fails here, the liberating forces will pour into the capital unopposed. If the liberators fail here, an assault on the capital will be costly and difficult. All attacking troops are advised to bring cold weather gear, heavy weapons, and plenty of ammo - it's going to be a long fight.

SLOTS
Allies: 3/2 [_DERP_]
KSDF: 1/2

Within the walls of the Eisen Gap, the Liberation of Ewartung rages on. Stealth dropships, loaned to all allied forces by Hanhe-Kaedar, have managed to slip in through the cloud breaks over Neimansland and have smuggled in squads of power armor equipped infantry, Jedi, and regular assault infantry. The ground forces are to conduct a fast and vicious attack on the military HQ in Ewartung and on the Capital Building, where Commandant Steiner and his staff reside. Victory here will destroy the will of the KSDF - failure will only embolden them. But first, the Allies have to secure the streets; in Hoffnung Plaza, where the Erwartung Central Police Station is located, an infantry battle is about to burst into life, pitting determined allied soldiers against Steiner's relentless secret police and fearless riot troops.

SLOTS:
Allies: 2/2
KSDF: 0/2

The Capitol Building is the seat of Steiner's power, and his refuge from the rioting masses. It is heavily guarded and will not be easy to crack open - it is for that very reason that the first Jedi assault forces are going to strike directly at its door. Smuggled in along with the rest of the Erwartung assault force, a small team of elite Force Sensitives is prepared to strike at the very heart of all evil on Konstallen. Victory here will ensure peace on Erwartung for generations to come, but it won't be easy; getting through Steiner's militia will be a tough fight, and there's no telling what surprises he has up his sleeve. Rumors abound of Force-sensitive mercenaries in his employ; if they're going to turn up anywhere, it'll be in the Capitol Building.

SLOTS:
Allies: 2/2
KSDF: 2/2

Not far from the Capitol Building lies the heavily reinforced House of Representatives - once a symbol of Konstallen's democratic government, it is now a military prison and the headquarters for Steiner's secret police and the KSDF. It houses the main communication relay for all military forces in and around Erwartung; taking it out will devastate the KSDF and remove their ability to call for reinforcements and effectively communicate. Victory here will disrupt and demoralize KSDF forces all across Konstallen and will allow the Allies to free the prisoners held within; failure will only serve to inspire the KSDF and will undoubtedly result in the mass execution of all prisoners held at KSDF strongholds.

SLOTS:
Allies: 0/2
KSDF: 0/2

In the rolling plains of the fertile Tallicht Valley, Steiner's massive armored columns are rolling out of their underground bunkers to march on Ewartung, Neimansland, and the Sutamis Mines. They must be stopped; if they are allowed to reach their destinations, Steiner's tanks and artillery will crush everything that opposes him. The allies have managed to get several armored companies groundside by sneaking them around the KSDF Orbital Blockade - it's up to these brave souls to stop the armored menace before it reaches the cities. If they fail, countless thousands of lives may be lost to collateral damage from the shells of Steiner's guns.

SLOTS:
Allies: 0/2
KSDF: 1/2

[More theaters of battle will be added as the need for battles increases.]

HOW TO GET INVOLVED

By now you probably just want me to skip to the part where you get to shoot stuff. Or, at least, I hope you want to shoot stuff. It'd be a bit awkward having a pacifist in a battle. Anywho, here's the shindig: First, you have to sign up. We need two flavors of characters for this to work:

First, we need NPC's. They're the lifeblood of the opposing force. Absolutely anyone can play an NPC. I don't care if all your chars are Hutt or Indie or Jedi or what-have-you; if you want to fight in this battle, you can fight for the Konstallen Military as an NPC. In fact, I encourage Hutt, Bogan, and Indie RP'ers to participate on the NPC side of things; it gives you a chance to hone your skills and to have some fun. Who knows, maybe you'll even succeed at driving the Allies off of Konstallen - never underestimate an underdog, after all. ;)

Secondly, we need PC's. They will be the cornerstone upon which the entire invasion force is built. Squads of allied NPC's will be assigned to them, or in certain battles, PC's will be assigned to vehicles or a squad made entirely of PC's. For IC reasons, PC's for the Allies will only be accepted from the Republic, the Jedi Order, CARD, and any neutral or Republic-aligned indie faction. PC chars for the KSDF will be accepted from all other factions, but make sure that your char has a good IC reason for being involved! Indie chars are welcomed on either side - we've always got room for you guys!

Now without further ado, here's the sign-up sheet. Just fill this out and post it in this thread - if you're in a main faction but you're iffy about whether or not your char can get in, please PM your faction leader!

NAME: [N/A if NPC'ing]

I'm signing up for the urban infantry battle and (once it's done - I'm assuming since you said the streets need to be taken first that the capital building battle comes after?) the capital building thread with Jairo Light, providing there's at least one Jedi there with him (he wouldn't help out unless there was, he doesn't want them thinking he's too far gone).

I leave it in your capable hands, Jiang. Take it if you want it, and I won't be offended if you don't. He'd be a bit of a wildcard, and I understand if you don't want that :3

I'll also NPC anywhere that you want me, but only in one place. I'd prefer the armour thread or a Naval one.

EDIT: Characters link's in the sig, for retards.

@Raider: Awesome, you're in.

@Den: Most of the urban threads will be happening simultaneously, since the urban battle is a whirlwind attack on multiple key points all across Erwartung, and I don't think we're going to have a shortage of infantry, so I'll try my best to make sure that Jairo is in a thread with another Jedi. I don't mind that he's a wildcard, in fact, that'll make things more interesting. ^^ Anywho, I'll put him down as a tentative part of the Urban Battle, but I'll either shuffle him around or create a new battle - there's still the Military HQ to capture - if I have to to keep him with a Jedi.

EDIT: Put you in as part of the armored battle. I may shuffle things around later, and you can always switch to NPC'ing another battle if you'd prefer it.

The beans, they are so cool.

In other news I just realised that I haven't updated the links in my character thread yet, so that will be happening asap. For now here's the current character profile for Jairo:

Jairo Light.

Can Yen be in a thread with Jairo Light? Check Sig.For Yen.

To be honest it would need to be a Jedi who actually appears to be a Jedi, Yen looks like a rogue (with the red blades and all), so Jairo probably wouldn't realise they're a Jedi, and hence wouldn't bother revealing himself.

Don't mean to piss on your parade Zen, but if he's turning up on conditions he sort of has to stick to them. We could always do a thread afterwards?

I would like to sign up, but given my upcoming week-long absence I think I will wait. If there are any openings when I get back then I will jump in with somebody.

Yen might be a Jedi soon. And the threads you saw that everytime yet we never had one. Plus I really want to be in this thread. And Yen does not wear red sabers if he shown near the jedi he is shown without weapons.

Why not use your Republic private? Doubt that character has seen much use.

Is it possible for me to join this battle with Khutarrah? He's Shade's (Denzein) 'bodyguard' and 'brother' and Denzein and I both think it'd be awesome if we could fight together in this battle.

Our chars are very close and so they would only really take up one slot. They're both factionless rogues and fight for the same motives.

You'll have to post in the Jedi Sign-up thread, but you'll have to get Yen approved for the Jedi first. PM Sree about that.

Sure. ^_^

I want to join with something; don't really know what, maybe NPC, maybe Jedi, maybe super-awesome something.

I'll join this with an NPC or a Jedi if I make one on time.

Awesome. For now, I'll put you down for both sides. If you later decide that you want to go full KSDF, full Allies, or just dabble in both, I'll edit the list accordingly.

OK, I'll put you down for the KSDF for now and I'll edit the list if you go /Jedi later. ^^

Also, I forgot to include this in the sign-up format, but please post what battle you want to be involved in! I can just assign you to a battle if you want, but if there's a specific fight you want in on I'll need to know. =3
