The Divine Cabal

b5i00p.jpg

As our bodies are protected by armor, our souls are protected with our loyalty.
As our arms are charged with death for the Emperor's enemies, our thoughts are charged with wisdom.
We are the soldiers of the Divine Cabal, and our enemies shall know no mercy.
Kill the heretic, burn the witch, abhor the traitor. Suffer not the unclean to live.
Such is the will of the Emperor.

-Sect Master Cassius Dorn, The Angel's Creed-

Overview

The Divine Cabal is a militaristic, highly xenophobic and ultra-religious nation on the world of Houche. The nation is run by a powerful God-Emperor, an incredibly powerful Force Sensitive of unknown origins and his council of leaders. Their are four sects that make up the Cabal: the Tsagaan Kusur, the Black Templars, the Imperial Fists and the fearsome Space Wolves. The Cabal's boasts one of the most technologically advanced militaries in the galaxy, complete with the genetically modified, power armor wearing monsters known only as the Angels that comprise one tenth of the total armed forces. The Angels are the most important portion of the Emperior's legion, as they are the elite of his fighting force and the extention of his will.

Size of the Military

As it currently stands, the nation is at war with another for dominance of Houche. As per national law, all males between ages nineteen through thirty must be enrolled in the military in some capacity if they're not already occupied working in one of the many factories to fuel the Cabal's war machine. The ground forces of the Divine Cabal are estimated to be at roughly forty thousand strong, with one tenth being the divine and blessed Angels of the Emperor. The fleet of the nation is less than impressive, boasting only a pair of corvettes and a single squadron of fighter craft. It acts as more of a defensive fleet against their rival nation with whom they battle for control.

Military Training Process

Cabal military training is, to put it lightly, harsh. The citizens are raised from birth to be incredibly loyal to the Emperor and prepared for military time down the road as they exit secondary school. Serving in the military is one of the most honorable things to do and considered a glorious way to do. The process begins with a four month long boot camp where trainees are drilled in tactics, weapons usage and subject to general conditioning. For most, they then go onto serve in a frontline unit in need of replacements from the war. However, a select few are submitted for entry into the Angels. Angel training is another five years of genetic modifications, new diets, cybernetic implants and even more additional training. It is not unlike CARD's Ocelot program in many ways except that those trained by the shadow corperation are not likely to be as fanatically loyal to their master as the Angels are. One can also qualify to become an Angel through immensely impressive actions and consitant bravery on the battlefield although that route is one much less traveled. While the Force is what, technically gives the Emperor his power, one of Force Sensitivity is considered a mutant and a witch and is often killed once it is revealed except in a few circumstances. The Inquisitors are the ones in charge of determining if such a mutant is killed or absorbed into their Order for redemption.

Angel Rankings and Equipment

Sect Master/Emperor's Champion

As far as the Cabal goes, these are the strongest warriors, best leaders and most devout men in the nation. Each is closely trusted by the Emperor, no one man more so than the Champion, to the point of allowing them to rule the great nation whilst he handles being divinity and having a nation of supporters. Each of them are shining examples of what is expected from the Angels in their Sect and considered the few lights remaining in the darkness of the galaxy.

Imperial Artifact: Each of the Sect Masters, and the Emperor's Champion, wield or wear something having to deal with the founding of the Cabal. Each item is blessed by the Emperor himself and imbued with some of his raw power. They are mighty arms and armor and few outside the faction realize just how significant it is to be in possesion of one.

Sect Command Council

Almost never seen on a battlefield, these men are heads of the Sects and help run the thousand-strong organizations. Often content with their administrative positions because they served years on the battlefield. The generals of the Cabal have access to any wargear that the other ranks do and often kit themselves out in the armor from their days as a Paladin.

Paladin

The divine power of the Emperor shines powerfully through his chosen Paladins and through them the enemy shall be purged. For every fifty Angels there is roughly one Paladin throughout the whole military. They sport arguably the best armor in the whole of the military, many who pass this rank keep the armor from their days here, and are some of the last people you want to see on the battlefield. Many of them have been around since the start of the current war, nearly two decades ago, and have been hand selected by the Sect Command Council's for their ferocity, leadership and religious devotion. They're some of the best warfighters in the galaxy and nightmare fuel for heretics.

Imperial Power Armor: The most customizable piece of gear in the whole of the Cabal's vast armoury. It ranges from equal in size and protection to the Terminator armor all the way to less heavily armored than standard power armor. Most Paladins opt for a middle-ground, having access to higher-end materials than the lesser ranks means that they can have protection significantly better than the standard armor whilst maintaing a major advantage in mobility over terminator armor. Some common modifications include: a stormbolter chambered in .50 caliber located on the wrist, the magnetic plates in the hands and feet, and a protective inner gel to protect against lightning or fire based attacks. Armor is vaccuum sealed and impervious to hazardous environments. Not impervious to EMP although the effects are less on this suit than others, it still powers down the armor for a minute or so, leaving the Marine with a very heavy suit of metal that'd be nigh impossible to move in.

Power Sword: The badge of rank for a Paladin. A light blue energy field surrounds the double-edged blade of the sword, giving it cutting power similar to a lightsaber but with much more weight behind it. A cortisis weave in the durasteel blade means that the glorified glowsticks can't cut through it either.

Chaplain

Higher up on the command pole than the sergeants and a step down from the rare and deadly Paladins, the Chaplain's are the most powerful members of the Cabal encountered with much regularity. The symbol of rank for Chaplains is the skull shaped helmet and for the more battle hardened ones, a new set of power armor known as Terminator armor. Regardless of Sect, the Chaplains are known for their religious fevor as at this stage one is permitted to actually see the Golden Throne of the Emperor and be in his presence, a very rare experiance.

Power Hammer: A two-handed banhammer of death and destruction. Real weight is close to two hundred pounds but thanks to repulsor technology in the head of the hammer, it feels light untill making contact with its target at which point it triples it's already significant weight resulting in usually instant death.

Terminator Power Armor: Very heavy-duty assault armor with an emphasis on massive strength enhancements and thicker armor. A mixture of hydraulics and servomotors make Terminator armor much stronger than contemporary armor, significantly stronger than standard power armor. Thick armor is resistant to heavy fire from small arms weaponry and is capable of surviving explosions from anti-infantry fragmentation and concussion grenades. Armor is vulnerable at the joints, and is vulnerable to anti-tank weapons or direct hit from explosive weapons. Armor will not weather sustained heavy weapons fire or an EMP. Armor is vacuum sealed for operation in hazardous environments and is equipped with magnetic plates in palms of gauntlets and on bottom of boots, to allow the wearer to scale surfaces or lock himself in place aboard a ship to avoid being ripped out in an explosive decompression. In addition to this, the wearer must undergo a rather intrustive surgery that leaves him with a port on the back of his neck (ala the Matrix) that the suit hooks up to when on. Wearers often get so used to the massive shell that they feel naked without it and many wear it just about everywhere.

MK-550 Chain gun: Monsterous three-barreled Assault Bolter firing .75 Caliber explosive slugs at a blistering rate of fire of 1500 Rounds per Minute. Fires from a high-capacity ammo backpack containing 1500 rounds of ammunition. Not the most accurate weapon in the world, but very useful for suppression or mowing down large groups of infantry.

MK-345 Bolter: Similar in most regards to its smaller, standard issue cousin but fires the same round as the heavy bolter from a thirty round magazine. Despite having similar specs, the much larger round means a much larger weapon and both this and the 550 require terminator or similar armor to be used for recoil control reasons.

Sergeant

Grizzled veterans of the Cabal's armed forces. These are some of the scariest guys wearing standard power armor around. Usually have a decade if not more in the Angels. This is the usual end of the road for most men, a respectable one at that, as the ranks going upward are much less common and to see a Paladin or one of his superiors is essentially guaranteed death for the enemy. Sergeants are generally found in command of squads of ten Angels but can be found leading groups as large as twenty five if they have the experience. Some say assault specialized sergeants hand hold their own against the famed Jedi Knights if only their chainswords were lightsaber resistant.

MK-345 Stormbolter: Very similar to the standard pattern bolter only it has two barrels and feeds from a pair of magazines. Fires only in fully automatic and is capable of shredding any infantryman not wearing power armor in a heartbeat. Heavily favored to the point of almost being a symbol of the rank. Heavy weapon and recoil.

Warrior

The next rank up from recruit. These young men and women are the backbone of the sects and have anywhere from one year to a full decade on the battlefield fighting in the name of the Emperor. They usually operate in squads of ten and can change the course of a battle wherever they are inserted, scattering the enemy in a wave of purifying bolter fire. In every squad of ten Angels, there must be at least one sergeant to lead them into battle. Some have a form of specialization, whether it's heavy weapons, assault or something else such as demolitions but most simply stick to their ol' reliable standard Bolter and combat knife.

Standard Power Armor: Well-balanced power armor with a solid blend of agility, armor, and strength. Armor plating is impervious to pistol and blaster pistol fire. Somewhat effective against rifle and blaster fire. Ineffective against full-sized rifle fire and up. The flexible joints between armor plates are weak spots and will only stop one or two pistol rounds. The joint between the chest and groin is remotely effective against pistol rounds but will fail before long. Armor suit is Vacuum-sealed and equipped with rebreather for extended operation in hard vacuum and in hazardous or toxic environments. Suit is also waterproof. Roughly doubles the wearers regular physical strength and is less of a hinderance then many other power armor variants thanks to servomotors in the suit.

MK-245 Bolter: Standard issue Angel weapon and one to be feared. Spits out .75 caliber rounds at a respectable 600 RPM from a thirty round curved magazine with dinner plate accuracy at three hundred meters. Firing modes are safe, two round burst and fully automatic. With incredibly easy general matinence and reliability that rivals the famed weapons of the Taung, there is nothing more appropraite for the Emperors Chosen.

MK-490 Bolter: Chambered in an even larger caliber than it's standard issue cousin, this beast is the last thing you want to see an Angel in front of you with. Fully capable of ripping through many a vehicle and turning cover into concealment like that was it's sole purpose, the 490 is capable of both suppresive fire and deadly accuracy. If used in a defensive position the enemy has little hope of taking that are via a direct assault. Each squad of ten usually has one Warrior specialized in using the big bad weapon often referred to as "Bruiser" by the standard military, where it also see's usage in two man teams. It's often mounted on the tops of vehicles to act as a turret or on the sides to act as an infantry and light armor killer. Backpack fed.

Chainsword: Vibrochainsword issued as assault melee weapon. Designed for use with Power Armor. Capable of tearing through flesh and most infantry armor with sickening ease. Razor-sharp teeth are specialized for clawing through soft infantry armor and flesh; as such, the weapon is ineffective against hard armor. In the hands of a veteran, it's fully capable of tearing a swathe through enemy units and begging for more.

AT3 Missile Launcher: 160MM Missile Launcher capable of firing homing or manually guided anti-tank missiles, dumbfire thermobaric missiles for anti-structure/personnel use, and homing or manually guided Proximity-fuzed Fragmentation Missiles for general purpose/anti-soft-vehicle use.

Combat Knife: Standard issue for all Angels, very large to match the Angels size and strength. Often has quotes from the Emperor or others relating to the religion on the blade.

Medical Kit: Self explanatory. Medical kit containing bacta dispenser, laser cauterizer, field surgical implements, bandages, painkillers, antibiotics, etc etc.

Recruit

The bottom of the barrel both in terms of command structure and in overall skill. Most recruits won't see action in the field aside from their final missions after the large majority of their training has been completed. Often armed with nothing but what's given to them by their masters. Each sect gives this rank varrying duties but overall they're not trusted with anything important. Must compelete at least a full year on the front lines before eligible for a promotion.

History

The Divine Cabal began with the divine revelation of Jedi Knight Arcus Loft, who received a vision from the Force to take up and leave the Order. With him he took twenty disciples, men less powerful than Loft but sensitive to the Force and loyal to the cause Loft set down for them; to maintain the defense of humanity and worship the God-Emperor. This inspiration caused Arcus to recruit men from across the galaxy, forming up the first ranks of the Divine Cabal. Loft was revered as a God, a prophet to the world of men, and drew followers from multiple worlds to be formed up into Legions commanded by his disciples. They received the title of Primarch and were revered only second to the God-Emperor. His power was unmatched within his troops, numbering around twenty thousand at the time.

But for a man to rule effectively he must have a land to preside over. The world of Houche was landed on, where the Emperor’s soldiers probed the nation that resided there. The nation was a formidable adversary, but Loft was eager to pit his forces against a tried and true enemy. The Cabal succeeded, and Arcus elevated himself to the position of ruler of the continent that they had taken. These times were prosperous for the Empire, where the smiths of the day went to work constructing powerful suits of armor and advanced weaponry. Soldiers of the Cabal were put through extreme training regimens to make them fit for service, and even the lowliest Recruit must have served for a year of duty before taking his place as a full Warrior.

The military’s size itself increased during this time, swelling to around forty thousand. Units were broken up into four Sects, commanded by Sect Masters. A Champion of the Emperor was chosen to act as his hand and voice to the masses. The Primarchs that remained began to rule from afar, old age wearying them. A Command Council of the four Masters and Champion oversaw the day to day operations of the Cabal, while the Primarchs served more as religious leaders.

Some of the Primarchs grew restless and corrupt in their backwards seat of the nation. Two Primarchs combined their strength, taking a considerable force to the North with the intent to dethrone the Emperor. A direct siege on the Cabal capitol, Mishrak?, was executed, but the will of the Emperor crashed down upon the infidels who sought his throne. The massive amount of soldiers totally loyal to his command came to his aid, and in one fell swoop he ended the rebellion and put divine edicts in place to keep his leaders from the future in line.

In an act of brutality but fairness the Emperor put the remaining Primarchs, numbering only around five with the onset of old age and death of natural causes, into retirement. The God-Emperor himself has aged significantly, and rules for a distance, trusting his Champion and Masters to watch over his reign.

Resentment remained to be harbored, and old grudges flared. The xenophobic, fanatical Cabal was a threat to other Houche nations sovereignty, and a attack of sheer numbers was planned and implemented around twenty years ago. A force of over a hundred thousand combined warriors flooded into the Cabal’s territory, but the ever vigilant Angels beat back any assault directed at them. They pushed the opposing army back into their homeland, but since then has been locked in a state of constant skirmishing and row back and forth over the border. The opposing nation has been survived only by their mass of population, which easily overwhelms the Cabal in number but not skill.

As the Divine Cabal rises to prominence in galactic affairs the Command Council itself strives to spread the religion of the God-Emperor to the galaxy and lead the infidels to redemption, whether through death's embrace or the realization of the Emperor's perfection.

The number of NPCs of your faction isn't very clear. Please put in there somewhere how many men your faction has.

Equipment wise: I am most concerned with the weapons that boast ".75 calibre" rounds (I'm assuming they're all slugthrowers). What is the reasoning for using such heavy rounds? Especially with the chaingun. Most handheld firearms of the modern age don't go beyond .50 calibre, not to mention that none of the currently used .50 calibre-capable guns are capable of automatic fire and they are also among the heaviest guns of their class in terms of weight. I cannot imagine the sheer terror of having to fight the recoil of three rotating barrels firing .75 calibre rounds at 1500 rounds per minute, since your mentioning of a backpack storage case for the chaingun implies that this weapon is held by hand.

Your repulsorlift-operated power hammer is questionable, though its strengths can easily be counterbalanced by making the weight more of an issue in using it. It would be great if you can modify the power hammer to reflect this.

I can drop the round down to a fifty caliber, but that'd extend the effective range, firing rate and accuracy of the weapons as well as increasing magazine size. The size, weight and recoil of their current weapons are offset by both the natural strength of the Angels and the power armor they wear. Their are certainly .50's capable of fully automatic fire, that was the rounds original use in the Browning MII during the second World War. Fighting the recoil of the chaingun is the heaviest set of armor in the faction, it greatly limits the users mobility to the point that they're little more than a rotating machinegun turret. The weapon also isn't terrible accurate and is often fired in bursts so as to mitigate the fearsome recoil. Keep in mind that this weapon is rarely used even by the Angels so it won't see much use regardless.

I can edit the weight of the hammer to be heavier, and make it so the repulsorlifts don't relieve much weight but only add to its striking power if that'll balance it.

Didn't Jiang already make an exceedingly similar space marine faction of religious zealots?

And then the person who had Jiang's faction shut down for being overpowered so he could open up his own clone of it?

This is an extension of Jiangs original idea, his faction was overpowered because they were A) all Force Sensitive and B) people had a poor idea of what exactly their powre armor was capable of. There are many a weakness for the armor, a major one being their bulk.

Actually, Hakim's faction was overpowered because the entire concept revolved around almost invincible Power Armor. The specs the people involved were given basically nullified all damage except EMPs and one elemental damage to balance it out. It ended up not flying because of misinterpretation of information on the parts of a few parties.

You can't say people had a "poor idea" of the power armor when there was a page detailing exactly what it could and could not do, along with upgrades as one progressed in rank. The problem was that the admins didn't think the weaknesses balanced the strengths, which can be argued for almost anything, to be honest. The only difference is that Hakim's faction also had an influx of Force sensitives who were only in it so they could abuse certain powers such as lightning.

So, in actuality, the problem had nothing to do with the Force sensitivity or grasp of power armor. It was all about how people put it into use.

I see.

Well, the idea was pretty original in its first incarnation (now that it's been reused/revived a couple times it's starting to lose its shine), but still a little too much Warhammer 40K for my tastes. Oh well.

I'll keep an eye on what they accomplish, though.

Baseed on what I know from talking to Hakim and what I saw in the faction specs, yes people did in fact abuse the armor as it was. If I recall, your character (Vashni was his name I believe, I rather liked him) was one of the more powerful men in faction. You can look back at the old thread still and it lists the downsides of the armor. It's weak between the gaps, anything that can stop small arms fire reliably is not mobile at all, and attacking the power pack at the back essentially shuts down the soldier.

Having Force Sensitives was another large issue when added to the above. The addition of lightning and such to an already very powerful soldier definetly pushed them to OP.

It was a combination of both, overestimating what the armor was capable of and misuse by people with it. Another problem was the fact that the faction drew so much attention to itself by walking into Open threads and exterminating PC's, something this faction probably won't worry about as most of the threads with them, at least for the begining, will be them fighting to take control of Houche.

@Vanity: Yeah, it's a copy, I won't deny that and it's certainly not the most original thing in the world but there are some people interested in RP'ing it so I figured why not give it a shot?

Which is essentially what I said with a few more details in the seams. : P

Yeah, I agree with you for the most part, I'm trying to right the wrongs that faction made so some SM-esque RP is doable with using the accursed Diverse RP forums.

Considering this is an indy faction, forty thousand is still a lot. Although your angels can still comprise a tenth of the figure, I'd ask that the manpower be reduced a lot. Say 1500. The manpower can grow as the faction progresses.

The Browning M2 is a heavy machine gun that requires one to deploy on a tripod or stand, opposed to being handheld. I was referring to the handheld variety of weapons. Sorry for the inadequate description. My point still stands.

I have an idea, if you don't mind my suggestions. Saying that the manpower grows as the faction progresses is very vague, which played into Jade Galactic's big... I wouldn't call it a debut, but you know what I mean. I think you should put a static number on there. For every PC member that joins, X amount of NPCs are recruited. It is easily justified by saying that the PCs were signed on in recruitment drives.

Interesting idea: I'll see if I can work something into the rules on this.

I agree with what Dragon/Gambler said on this. It'd be awesome if we could start a bit bigger than that as well, since 1500 is hardly a nation's military. It'd be rather difficult to explain them taking over Houche with a force of 1500 unless it was all Angels and frankly I don't really want that. There was that one indie faction, I can't remember the name but I think Wing ran it, the Soverign Guard? They had a huge NPC force and a much stronger Navy than I do at the moment. They also had more PC's than I, at least so far, so that makes sense but to strip me down to 1500 would require re-writing of the History for sure, as 1500 men is not going to be a functional military.

I'd prefer it to be a fifty calibre rather than a seventy-five calibre.

Will make the change.

The Browning M2 is a heavy machine gun that requires one to deploy on a tripod or stand, opposed to being handheld. I was referring to the handheld variety of weapons. Sorry for the inadequate description. My point still stands.

The average size of a soldier using an M2 is much smaller than a man who's undergone genetic enhancements and cybernetic upgrades, in addition to that the guy using the Ma-Deuce wasn't kitted out with strength increasing power armor either.

Then how mobile is this set of armor when the rotating machine gun is not in use?

More so than if it is, but still not that great by any means. Figure it'd plod along at roughly a light jog at max.

Sounds good.

Will do.

I've been more careful about allowing larger NPC figures since the Sovereign Guard due to the bitching over it. Although I did not appreciate it, there was a point that was within reason. Since then, I have been avoiding allowing indy factions with more than 1500 NPCs.

Yeah but the Sovereign Guard also looked to immediatly take a large role in the main RP, something this faction won't be doing for a rather long time. I intend to keep their RP to mostly their little area of space and not get involved with much untill they're strong enough to actually matter. Non-aggresion pact with the Hutts basically let them do as they please in that area.
