DESCRIPTION
The TI-3A D-Wing is a starfighter which was manufactured by the Tay Industries corporation during the Galactic Civil War. While not the most prestigious of the "alphabet" fighters, it was among the first, having been set to debut at the same starship exhibition as the Incom Corporation's legendary T-65B X-Wing. The D-Wing, however, was originally designed to pursue an Imperial military contract, being developed in response to various shortcomings of the Empire's standard TIE/LN starfighters by Sienar Fleet Systems. Tay Industries had high hopes that the D-Wing would supplement or even replace the TIE series in service, although this was not to be.

The D-Wing is a strange, asymmetrical design, incorporating many elements of Sienar's TIE series, but also plenty of its own unique design cues. Organized roughly in a flying wing configuration - the shape of which gives the craft its name - the D-Wing has an offset cockpit which can seat a pilot and co-pilot, although only the former is actually required to fly the ship and operate its weapons, while the latter mainly serves as a relief pilot on long-duration missions and an extra set of eyes on the scanners. The ship is equipped with a single medium laser cannon, as well as a light ion cannon, useful for disabling enemy vessels. Also present is a 3-shot concussion missile launcher.

Unlike most starfighters of its era, the D-Wing incorporates a class 2 hyperdrive, along with a full navicomputer. The D-Wing was intended as a long-range strike and patrol craft, useful against the asymmetrical warfare tactics employed by the scattered rebel groups of the day. It could remain in space for up to a week at a time, if necessary.

The D-Wing was set to make its debut at an industry conference on a planet in the Mid Rim, with the first prototype of the design to be on display at the Tay Industries booth. Unfortunately for Tay - and perhaps fortunately for the budding Rebel Alliance - agents of the rival Sienar Fleet Systems were present at the show, attempting to sabotage the D-Wing ahead of a planned flight exhibition. This plot was ultimately foiled, but only with the help of Rebel agents, who ended up stealing the D-Wing prototype in order to make their escape from agents of the Imperial Security Bureau. The planned D-Wing demonstration, which was to have taken place in front of prominent Imperial officials, was canceled, costing Tay Industries its much hoped-for Imperial military contract.

Ultimately, the D-Wing would go on to be remembered as something of a footnote in starfighter history. Tay Industries never built it for the empire, as originally intended, but ironically did sell several production runs to representatives of the Alliance to Restore the Republic, who were much impressed by the design after evaluating the stolen prototype. D-Wings also found their way into the hands of various sector navies, planetary militias, private security forces and even criminals. Though they are no longer produced, the D-Wing's sturdy design and ease of maintenance has ensured that they have seen long service careers, with some enduring even into the present day.

LEGALITY
Restricted. D-Wings are starfighters, if uncommon ones, and are subject to extra licensing requirements and increased scrutiny by authorities.

INTENT
To create a standard 2-seat starfighter.
