Working amongst the dead has a peculiar effect on me, as the scalpel, so surprisingly sharp and effective as it parts flesh, begins the work... Memories of my childhood and the early teen years well up, bringing back old joyous sounds and sights: running from my half-brothers, waving their only clean school-shirts over my head and goading them to chase faster, eventually being caught.. teasing my half-sister about her first male consort, while she tried kicking me out of her room after I had picked through her secret stash of credits, all to end up buying sweet-breads that I ate until I got sick. And more, so much more.... but amidst the joy, age brought with it a fair share of sorrows for us all. Dreams lost, hopes crushed, and lives drifting ever apart. But, I suppose, if I'm to divulge my life to the dead, I should simply start from the beginning.

My name, or what the clients I work for generally use, is Vaylen Wolfe. In reality, my family name is Isariosh, of the now-deceased Isariosh nobility of the Hapes Consortium. And I, poor soul, am a half-breed.. and a male, to make matters more interestingly pathetic.

As my Hapan mother once told me, in my latter years, I was her secret shame. Oh, not such a secret that she hid me away and denied me as her son... no, I was to her a reminder of her past follies, her youthful ignorance, and the man she'd given herself to in the midst of childish joy. It took me years to accept her words: years which saw me try to prove that she shouldn't feel shame because of me, that she should instead be proud of her half-breed child. A child's hope, if ever I had one. But my youth wasn't a waste, for there were those happy moments I spoke of. Unlike my mother, my half-siblings accepted me as they accepted each other: different fathers for each of us but all connected by our mother's blood. I had two half-sisters, one older and one younger, and three half-brothers, two of whom were older and one who was younger. They were, however, fully of the Hapan species, whereas I was not.

For the general masses of the Consortium, gender and appearance are everything: they decide where you fit in, where you will end up, who you will become, and whether you will ever live a proper life. Of these things, my mother taught us well. She was one of the many minor nobles who advised the Queen Mother, playing the role of a governess over a small part of Hapes. She was respected, loved, and feared for this fact. As such, it was no surprise that others would seek ways to eliminate her and the progeny we offspring represented. As a half-breed, one would consider me not worthy of targetting, for I could never rise far in Hapan society, given I'm male as well as my breeding. But my pure-bred siblings could rise far, even if our mother was assassinated.

Maybe that was the key point that the conspirators came up with the plan they used.. or maybe it was simply bad luck for us and good luck for them. Either way, it happened.

At the age of sixteen, going by Basic years, I was called to a gathering of the family: my mother, half-siblings, uncles, aunts, and some of the eldest amongst our family had been called together to discuss the Queen Mother's upcoming policies to be implemented, concerning the unrest amongst the Empire and the measures to be taken if something were to occur. I declined the driver thrice, working on my medical studies in my private quarters, before I finally caved and let myself be escorted to the tower where the gathering was to take place. And this procrastination is what, in the end, saved my life. Halfway across the family estate, an explosion ripped through the tower's mid-riff, causing it to collapse as even more explosions blossomed across the upper levels. Thus, I watched as the entirety of my only known heritage vanished in flame before me.

The investigation began the next day and lasted two months, resulting in a mass-purge of Sith-Imperial pro-activists who were working to undermine the Queen Mother. While lives were saved by that, my family was no more: all my relatives were dead from the explosion and collapse, leaving me bereft of any real support. My mother's estate was liquidized and sold to others, with me receiving 5% of the total buying price. It was clear that I no longer had a place nor ties to my former home and so, I left for Coruscant and the Alliance's medical academies.

On Coruscant, I found myself as an object of study: my appearance, while mostly that of a Hapan, and my ears which set me apart as something else, became a side-topic for the instructors during the idle hours between lectures, studies, and live exercises. I wasn't alone in this, of course. Every student was subjected to it, usually starting with the newest of those enrolled in the courses who had exotic features or were obvious half-breeds. Being treated as an equal by women also took some time getting used to, after spending my entire life on Hapes. It was rather calming, knowing that my gender and looks no longer seemed a curse. And so, on Coruscant, I let myself grieve for the family I had lost while immersing myself into a path for the future I wanted.

I suppose that brings me back to the now, as I work on your cold body, preparing you for that trip back to Duros. That blaster-wound really did some damage to your cranium, I have to say. But here we are, in my humble clinic in the bowels of Coruscant's cityscape. Maybe I'll move office next month. The lighting isn't really that great, you know, and I still have that one little night-vision problem....

Well, until tommorrow then! Don't try to get up and walk out on me, eh? I've had plenty of people do that already! Hah.
