What's being a welder like? My dads friend is a welder and she said that there were a lot of safety guidelines and stuff people had to follow

I enjoy it, get to go off in my own little world and focus on the arc. It's got a zen element to it.

Normally. If it's a legit company/shop that doesn't want OSHA all over it's case. Shops tend to be good about it. If you do any field/contract/self employed/high up welding it gets a lot fuzzier. They'll pretty much always be some point where you'll be doing something that's sketchy safety wise, kinda goes with the territory on any "field" welding. (I've got a pretty entertaining story involving some empty chemical drums, galvanized/rusted steel, improper ventilation, and potential death by crushing)

Soooo, I went on vacation (mostly because I had to) and I figured I might as well do something a little unconventional with it- backpacking Denali, AK. Good times, but next time I'm going somewhere tropical.

Since I'm back onto the site after almost a year, and the vast majority of people here probably have no idea who I am, I figured I would post up some pics of myself. So, enjoy:

So here's some pictures from my travels and stuff recently:

Yes, I am aware that my hair looks like Javier Bardem from No Country For Old Men, but I was travelling, I didn't have time for no haircuts.

A picture - I'm on a wall

Another picture - I am on a different part of the same wall

Look, I have water on my hands.

Honestly this is just for Bee in response to her insult about my skills of taking selfies. How's this? Can I do it yet?

Got to me some cool dudes yesterday. I had initially been excited to meet and take pictures with former Lt. Col. Oliver North (aka mister "I don't always sell missiles to Iran, but when I do I quasi-illegally divert the proceeds to fund anti-communist guerrillas in Nicaragua and shred as much related documentation as I can get my hands on"), but after listening to our first presenter for the event, I ended up being even more excited to shake hands with this guy, SSG Travis Mills. Turns out he came through Bagram the same time I was there. The only reason I remember is because I recall the emergency blood drive they had (mind you, at the biggest trauma hospital in the country) because of the sheer number of blood transfusions they gave this guy while trying to keep him alive. Travis stepped on an IED that instantly removed his right arm and leg and left his left leg hanging on by a thread and his left arm in tatters. His left leg was soon removed at the knee and later shortened due to complications after a few rounds of surgery. His left arm ended up being removed just below the elbow, making him one of only 5 quadruple amputees from Iraq and Afghanistan to survive their wounds. He also remained conscious for hours after the blast while he was being medevaced, looking at his near total lack of limbs. Now the guys runs a charity foundation for amputees and is working on expanding to guys with PTSD (the Travis Mills Foundation) and he just put out a book on his experience that's coming out soon.

Dude was super hilarious. I was dying the whole presentation. Sooooooo many jokes about his wife beating him with his own arms or stuffing him in the corner, and about his sweet new robot arms and legs, etc. He functions so normally now it would be hard to tell the extent of his injuries if he hadn't worn shorts and a T-Shirt. Plus, he was super cool and humble, and signed a few hundred books for people. Highlight of the day, and I wish the pics hadn't been so washed out. Ollie North paled in comparison.

Also an outtake from a photo I tried to take today. I did two things wrong. I looked at the wrong screen and I didn't smile in time.
