It's more to ensure that if a large asteroid hits, there will still be humans around who can either repopulate the Earth or offer help to any survivors.

And in space, they've got lots of water, minerals, gases, and other useful materials that we don't have here. Also, by going further out, there's more space for humans which helps ensure that malthusian catastrophes are less likely to happen. Space can also offer certain sects that they can separate from the rest of the world if they want, much like the pilgrims. Another benefit is that technologies being developed for space can have other applications which have seriously helped.

Cailst has once again beat me to the punch.

If an asteroid is big enough to destroy the world and cause a huge drop in population, there would be no chance of repopulating. Diseases and starvation would kill the survivors.

None of which we know where it is nor do we have the equipment to do it.

Which would result in a war, just like the pilgrimage.
Another benefit is that technologies being developed for space can have other applications which have seriously helped.
Such as what? a toothbrush?

EDIT: MTT (make the thread)

This is kinda getting out of hand. If you wish to continue this discussion, we could set up another thread. Can we get back to the topic of the thread now?
