The Arcanist mask was well known in the Outer Rim, but the civilized people of the Core didn't bother reading about the criminals of the savages. The Arcanist had taken full advantage of that en route to his current location. His robes and mask brought some sick comfort of their own.

Talak Rand was in a bad place, but the Arcanist was in the prime of his power. His gloved hand gripped the hilt of his lightsaber tighter, and the blood red crystal inside seemed to call out to him, mingling his own darkness with the well of rage that flowed freely from it.

In... two... three... four... he let each breath come in as he centered himself not in the peace or tranquility that a Jedi would seek to find, but channeling the anger that was already there. This entire realm of the Coruscant underworld was steeped in evil and desperation. This was a place that even in the height of their power Jedi didn't like to come. It forced them face to face with what they let fester, and it threatened to impinge on their precious "Light." And that was why they'd fallen. They wouldn't bring themselves to face the ugly realities of the galaxy, and so they floundered now as well.

Out... two... three... four... he let the breath flow freely out. The darkness that flowed around him was channeled from that of the people's here. It flowed around him, but not through him. Like a current rushing by on every side and he was at its center. His own anger, fears, pain, and heartache mixed with it. All the product of your own foolishness, a mind of its own whispered. He hated that voice, and for months it hadn't been there, but it was back. He knew why it was back and he knew what had kept it at bay, but he'd never admit it. Not even to himself.

In... two... three... four... Talak spent a great many days of his life feeling confused and lost, unsure of where he fit into the galaxy. Trying to hold onto someone who it seemed he was foolish to have ever worked toward. He was tired. Tired of the indecision and the uncertainty. He wanted to be rid of the hurt, and all of his normal means he used to purge himself had fallen short. So he fell back on what he knew: a "swift justice" to those who destroyed the galaxy and brought harm on everyone.

The Arcanist knew it could use every ounce of that rage for something of worth. Waste not, want not. The saber hilt in his hand flipped on its end and lit. Its blood red blade would be sated and plunged into the floor beneath him. A hole was carved and down he dropped. The "floor" was the roof to the business of one Mr. Nyx. A Neimodian who - after a quick and dirty interrogation - the Arcanist had learned ran the biggest organized crime business on the streets of Level 1138.

Knock knock. The slab of roof dropped down and the Arcanist's saber was swinging before he'd even hit the ground. A clean cut across the throat left the closest thug - a bulky Feeorin - without 2/3 of his neck and also flipped the saber back to forward again. One movement flowed into another as he plunged the saber through the chest of a Chadra-Fan to his left.

From the streets outside, people were beginning to look at the building where shouts, gunfire, and the sounds of a scuffle were emerging. But who was going to step in to the lair of a known criminal?

Nick had spent his fair share of time down on Level 1138. It was near the heart of Coruscant's underground crime scene. It might as well have been another world entirely than the levels above.

They had come down here to investigate a string of robberies that could all be traced but to gang that had set up shop on this level. The air down here felt stale, making it ever so slightly more difficult to breathe. He had been staking out a building for some time, hoping to see the suspect they were looking for. It had been hours, and Nick was starting to grow a bit ancy. "See anything on your end?" he called to Trys on the radio.

Before he could get a reply he heard the blaster shots come from down the street. People were already starting to flee the area, they knew it was better to just not get involved. Nick didn't have that luxury. "Lets go check the commotion out." he called out over the radio. Secretly, he was glad to be rid of the boring stakeout duty as he exited his spot and stepped out into the street and started making his way towards the gunfire.

Trys’s voice came in on the other end of the comms, “No, but I had to write up a hooker that tried to solicit me. Also, can you believe they charge like 500 credits per hour now? And that’s from a woman that could be my grandma!” She was making her way back when she could hear the commotion down the street. Trys stared in confusion for a moment before Nick’s voice came on the comms again, and she radioed back that she would meet him.

Meanwhile, back in the building, the ceiling collapsed and the debris immediately killed a janitor that had been doing the rounds for the night. Of course, he wouldn’t immediately be noticed. Multiple people around the Arcanist would pull their blasters and blades in an attempt to subdue him.

Outside, Trys finally caught up to Nick on foot, and she had her gun out. She could see the flashes of light that designated blaster bolts were being fired, “GET AWAY FROM THAT BUILDING!” She shouted to the civilians that were stupidly trying to get a closer look. While this area was known for criminal activity, a lot of the poorer civilians called this their home.

Trys rushed closer to the building and could faintly make out a red blade swinging, “Shit!” She turned to Nick, “We need to call for back up. That’s a saber!”

The Arcanist hadn't even noticed the man who had been crushed. Perhaps Talak would have found this appalling or maybe he would have written it off as an unfortunate casualty but a small price to pay to stop more crimes and save more lives. At the end of the day, however, there was no time to evaluate it.

He had just decapitated the final guard in the room and glanced down at the half-dozen bodies littering the floor when he felt something in the Force. Was that... Trys?!

OH. KRIFF. NO. What the kark kind of bantha poodoo luck did he have to have to have her show up here and now. Fierfek! This brought with it an entire second wave of confusion and frustration. What was he supposed to do with this? He wasn't going to fight her, and now that he wanted to be away from her he couldn't be. Un. Be. Lievable. He was pissed.

It was only now that he caught sight of the man below the rubble, and he tossed it aside with the Force, bending down to feel for a pulse but finding now. Kark, he said as he stepped away. He felt like someone had punched him in the gut, not unlike the feeling of watching the girls hang on Gamorr. It was... pain and regret, but he couldn't dwell on it now. He couldn't be caught, he wouldn't fight the Rangers, and his plan to kill his way out was promptly going out the window. He could not ever catch a break.

He heard the shouts for backup, and promptly ran further into the building. He didn't know exactly where he was going, but anywhere was better than being forced into a fight with the Rangers. @Raydo @Sreeya

He cursed and pulled out his communicator. "This is Sector Ranger Shaw. We are currently engaging with a suspected terrorist on Level 1138. Requesting immediate backup." he said as they tried to clear the streets. He pulled his blaster out, this was about to be a bad day.

Nick ran across the street and broke one of the windows to give himself a view inside. "Sector Rangers! Drop your weapons!" he said pointing his blaster at the masked man.

"Drop your weapons!" he yelled again to those inside the building. He sparred a glance over at Trys, hoping their backup wasn't too far but he knew they would be on their own for time being.

Nothing.

None of them had offered him work. Not one of those lousy gangsters had even bothered considering him, and it had him fuming.

This little bosses thought they were so big, having twenty kilometers as their sandbox and squabbling over who got to sell spice on a street corner somewhere. "Bunch'a children. Let em' shoot blasters at each other. Couldn't care less," Laeonas would remind himself, turning a corner, plunging into conflict he couldn't have ever anticipated.

"...what's that?" He'd say aloud, hearing a commotion at the end of the block. It was confusing him. He could tell after walking a bit that it was a fight, but there was something other than blaster fire in there. There was a humming and tearing that sounded like... he couldn't even describe it.

Without much of a word, Laeonas moved-- “GET AWAY FROM THAT BUILDING!” He'd hear, head turning to see the source of the voice, and hius mouth would open a bit. "'at the lady on the holo a couple days ago who talked about arrestin' Jedi?" He thought to himself, a bit alarmed. He couldn't imagine what a woman so important she belonged on a public service announcement would be doing here of all the places in the galaxy to be, but he could gather from the weapons and the bravado that she had to have some authority.

But he had no plans of just casually following order. He stayed where he was, taking a look at everything. There was another one who was armed- he figured they had to be partners. Everyone else there seemed like junkies or just poor people. Then, there was he- the tall, barely a legal adult young man in an overcoat that could hide a vibrosword and a blaster rifle. "Quite a commotion ya' two have found yerselves in, ayy?"The boy mused, stepping back. He'd glance in the building for a split second, not sure what it was swinging in there, or who or how or what was going on, but it didn't concern him to much as he'd turn to the two of them, the man pointing his gun in and shouting, and the woman who had been on the holo just close. "What's wrong, afraid ta go in? What's so terrifyin'? If you won't shoot those gangsters, I might just have to."

”If you wish it,” the tinny voice came over Chester headphones as he sat in the downtown diner ”...then you want it, so DO IT!” he pumped his fist in the air, preach brother he chuckled as he tidied away the last vestiges of his morning toast and caf. It had been a busy evening the night before, and promised to be a busier day - as part of a week on business in Coruscant. The Intergalactic Legal Convention only came around once a year, and it was a great place to network - only problem was, when you didn’t have the bank balance of one of the big firms, you got stuck with the lower levels for your lodgings.

Could be worse though.

”Cheque please darling,” Chester waved down the serving droid, who returned, and they settled up. Exiting the diner, he put on his jacket and checked his datapad, his flight was in four hours and he sure didn’t want to miss it.

Keeping his headphones in, he headed down the sidewalk, listening intently to Marn Snorflooks audioaid, Don’t just look at the Stars, own them - one of his favourites. He didn’t notice, therefore, the young Rodian sprint past him, fear plastered on his face - to emersed was the young attorney in checking through his holomail.

He rounded the corner, his eyes never leaving the screen of his datapad, as suddenly, even over the motivational (and passionate) monologue of one Mr. Snorflooks carried on, he heard the loud shout “GET AWAY FROM THAT BUILDING!”

He shrugged ”Wiseguy!” never looking up from his datapad, before, as they always do, one of his earphones fell out, and he heard the fated words “That’s a saber!”

He went pale.

Yanking out his earpods, he did what any self-respecting bystander would do, and stood in complete paralyzed shock at what he heard next. "This is Sector R....urrently engaging with...errorist on Level 1138...ting immediate backup." he only heard parts of it, before the Ranger drew a blaster, and smashed the window to Chesters right.

The smash of glass broke his paralyzes, and he ducked immediately behind the nearest car - as if the thin sheets of metal and durasplast would somehow shield him from anything.Clutching his bag tightly to his chest, as if for protection, he huddled there.

"Drop your weapons!" he heard.

Please do as they say. he thought to himself, eyes clenched shut as he waited for the noise to stop.

He just wanted to catch his flight.

Trys was at her wits end with idiot civilians getting in the line of fire. Most were smart enough to run away or duck behind something, but some were being utterly useless. One looked like a young boy that was standing around and actually addressing them as if this were a picnic. As soon as Nick shot the window, Trys was on the move.

Before the boy even finished his question, she physically shoved him out of the way, “Move you stupid kid!” Trys didn’t look back as she leapt through the broken window, the criminals inside caught between dropping their weapons or shooting at the man with the saber.

“IT’S THE ARCANIST!” One of the men inside screeched and real fear crept up her spine. Trys skidded to a halt, crouching down to quickly pick up one of the guns one of the criminals inside dropped as she needed something more lethal to engage him.

“We need the building surrounded!” She commed Nick as she went further into the building. Trys came across an empty hallway and ran through it, just barely catching a glimpse of the man with the saber ducking around the corner. She feared he would only slaughter more in his way, and there were plenty of people between him and the nearest exit.

Couldn't he just be left alone by these people. Confusion turned to frustration and frustration turned to anger. Anger that he was being chased by... her, anger that the janitor had been caught in the crossfire, and anger that rather than letting him finish off these scum, the Sector Rangers were going to come after him.

One of the windows was shot out, and the Arcanist continued to fall back. His saber was still clutched in his hand in case the Ranger actually opened fire, but the shot was only available for a moment before he was around the corner.

There wasn't any hesitation anymore. He had spent years training for this, and in that training he had been turned into a dark side killer. This was what he fell back on as he fled down the hall and further into the building. Trys's fears were certainly realized as a result. Anyone with a gun in hand was a target, and he didn't hesitate to cut down anyone who would try to keep him from the exit.

Lightning and a flashing red saber that were all too familiar to the Rangers would cut down anyone who stood in the way. Bodies bearing scorch marks and deep, burning cuts fell in the halls and rooms that the Arcanist cleared with deadly efficiency. He wasn't looking for Nyx any longer, he only wanted to be out of here. He didn't want to have to face Trys, and he wasn't willing to let her get hurt in order for him to escape. @Sreeya @Raydo @Tom @Nor'baal

Some of the color drained from Nick's face as Trys announced who they had actually stumbled upon. "We have a confirmed sighting of the Arcanist. Requesting all units respond." he repeated over the radio before giving the address.

If it were up to him, he would have said they should wait for backup but Trys charged headlong into to building and Nick wasn't about to let her face this man down alone. "You need to get out of here kid." he said to the boy who was trying to act far too casual as blaster bolts flew. "Everyone, get out of here. Now!" he said, not taking his eyes off of the room as he started after his partner.

Nick shot a man who was reaching for a blaster as he passed by trying to catch up to Trys. They would be at a disadvantage in such close quarters and had to deal with that sword.

The response from the lady who had been on the holo and the man who, he deduced, was her partner, was a bit more rude than he had anticipated- but it was nothing that offended him. He had been called far, far worse names.

The pair's very quick egress from the streets and entrance into the building, whose outer windows on the first floor were almost all shattered, left him without room to complain- which left the 19 year old Brentaali outside with a crowd of Coruscanti poor, whose eyes shifted to him, to the building, to each other, and back to him and the building and each other over and over and over.

"Hmph. A'right, a'right, I'll play yer game. Let's just wait out here for that little terry or any of the gangsters he's doing whatever to with that very hot looking flashlight (that saber, as the hololady called it) to get out here- than I'll just shoot em' in tha ankles." He'd determine, smirking a bit as he began heading towards the building's backside. As he moved, he spotted a traffic pole, and without so much as a slight bit of consideration, he threw his overcoat across the top, removing his blaster-rifle from his shoulder as he started to sprint, looking for where the rear exit had to be.

This was going to be fun.

He heard boots pounding past him, gunshots overhead and the screech of sirens - two types, law enforcement and medical. Yet, whilst he heard this, Chester saw none of it, his eyes scrunched shut as if to block out the terror around him. The holomovies and webcomics always focused on the heroes, they always drew the eye to the flashy uniforms, the fancy firearms and the brute physical strength of the men and women who kept the galaxy safe.

Yet they ignored the little guy.

And that’s exactly what Chester was right now, the little guy caught up in a situation in which he was totally helpless. He couldn’t protect himself from this Arcanist, he didn’t even have a firearm. For all his wits and charm, it faded away when someone like this sabre wielding terrorist turned up.

The heavy boots faded away, the sound of shattering glass accompanying them and Chester considered opening his eyes, maybe now it was safe to make a move. He nearly leapt out of his skin when he felt a hand on his shoulder, eyes springing open in a shot as he looked at the outline, slowly coming into focus, of a young man.

”I’m Medic Strakken,” Chester saw the badge, picked out by the soft blue glow from the lights of the medical truck behind him ”Can you stand, you’ve taken a quite a shock?”

Chester mouthed a ‘Yes’, and stood with the support of the medic. He was moved quickly, just outside a cordon line being set up second responders. He counted three officers, maybe more, and Medic Strakken and another, a young woman whose name he had not been told, caring to another ‘patient’, sat at the side of the road.

”He’s gone buddy,” Strakken said calmly, referring to the Arcanist who was, even now, being pursued by armed officers of the Sector Rangers ”I need to do a few checks OK? So, sit down here for me.” the medic gestured to the back end of the medical truck, and Chester sat down, as a shock blanket was put around his shoulders.

”I’m going to miss my flight.” he mumbled, the Medic ignored him, shining a light into his eyes.

”I’m going to miss my flight.”

Trys was enraged at seeing the trail of dead bodies. Many of these faces simply looked as if they were at the wrong place at the wrong time. She gritted her teeth as she rounded another corner, spotting the brief shadow just barely disappear, “WHY ARE YOU RUNNING LIKE A COWARD?!” She shouted out behind him, knowing he could hear. He was considerably more powerful and could easily overcome her if he wanted. Why was he insistent on killing everyone and running?

“What’s the status on the backup? Do we have the building surrounded?” Trys commed Nick, running up a set of stairs now to get to the same level as the Arcanist. She felt nothing but an adrenaline rush, knowing that she was so damn close. She could have sworn she saw him again, and she fired a shot with her stun blaster. Trys jumped over yet another dead body to keep on his trail.

“You’re surrounded! Just give up!” She shouted, bluffing regardless of whether backup was there or not.

Confusion led to desperation. Desperation led to fear. And fear led him back down the path of his training. To the roots of what it was to be a Sith. Death was nothing. They were all one with the Force in life or death, so what was death except a transcendence to another level?

This was the mind of the Arcanist.

The Arcanist was moving all on reflex as he cleared through the building. It didn't care. There was nothing but the goal, and that goal was survival at any cost. Then kill her. She's a threat, the instinct said.

What?! Kriff no! Absolutely not!

The sound of Trys shouting behind him seemed... distant and far away. He wanted to turn and tell her that he wasn't here to hurt innocents. That she shouldn't be chasing him, but he couldn't.

She followed, and he heard a stun shot slap into the wall behind him. His steps became wider, longer, and faster. There was no stopping or slowing. No allowance to convince her or reason with her. Nothing he felt he could do.

As the Arcanist burst through the door at the stop of the stairs, his lightsaber flicked across the window, shattering it as he spun. The Force bent to his will with a potency Talak was unaccustomed to. It was unnatural but flooded his veins like a drug. As Trys burst through the door as well, she would see the mask staring impassively, blood red saber in hand, and an outstretched hand with blue sparks rippling across the fingers.

She's a threat.

But Talak wouldn't allow it to release. Instead, the pistol would try to rip free of her hand and her own body would be yanked aside as if tackled to the floor by an invisible Force. It would be the window of time he needed to leap free of the window and onto the rooftop of an adjacent building. The saber would flash out, and he would be gone. Pulled into a cloak of refracted light that would make catching him all but impossible as he left before backup could arrive. Shock and new fear gnawed at Talak's mind as soon as his feet hit the roof. That wasn't him. Or not... part of him he recognized.

Nick stormed down the hallways trying to catch up to Trys, he bounced off walls and stumbled over dead bodies as he ran after her. She had gotten injured once when he wasn't there, he wouldn't let that happen again.

The traffic over the radio indicated back up would be there in a few minutes, but Nick didn't hear it. All he heard was his own labored breathing as he rounded the corner and saw Trys thrown to the floor.

He also saw the man they had been chasing, Nick fired to shots at the window but the man had already disappeared. He ran to the window and looked out, but there was nothing. "Damn it!" he said slamming his fist into the window frame. "Suspect has fled to east. We no longer have visual. All units set up a perimeter around the area." he said over the radio, knowing it was all but useless.

Safe for the moment, he turned to Trys. "You alright?" he asked, helping her up if needed.

The blaster fire continued from within the building, and the faint sound of that slashing "saber" just continued. Laeonas could've sworn he had heard that word before, in stories from when he'd hang around the older guys in the gangs he was in, or from the people who'd occasionally left Brentaal.

But right now, there was only one goal he had in mind- put a bolt in anyone who came out of that building. The woman who had been on the holo and her partner definitely didn't count, as well as any poor schmuck made to suck up to the gangsters who ruled on this level. He had been there once, and he knew where they were coming from.

There was no time to waste. Laeonas was running like he always did-- his feet were off the ground within a moment of hitting the sidewalk, and each time they did, he'd throw his entire weight forward and pivot from right to left-- just enough to boost his forward momentum.

Laeonas' body was flooding with adrenaline, and indirectly, the force. He felt everything-- the air as it blew past his ears, the rhythmic breaths that escaped his lips, the thump of his heart, his feet slapping the ground before flying back up and than slapping the ground again.

He bolted across the street and grabbed hold of the lowest rungs of a fire escape, not wasting any time as he climbed up in a flurry, rushing up the stairs. The force, the adrenaline, it all just kept flowing forward, like a dam that had shattered under overwhelming power. The stares were beneath him quicker than the roof had been, and he pushed his rifle forward in his hands. As quickly as he had run down the street, as quickly as he had gone up the escape and as quickly as he had gotten on the roof Laeonas had moved his eye onto other side of the block, and had begun searching the back of the building for any exit- but there was an issue.

The building had no back.

Realizing after a handful of seconds of confusion, a crimson blade shattered and broke through the window on the top level of the roof. Laeonas focused his sights, and for a moment, it seemed as if time had slowed to almost a stand still. His heart pumped furiously- thumpthump, thumpthump, thumpthump, thumpthump thumpthump thumpthumpthumpthumpthumpthumpmpmpmpmpm-

He had gotten a good look at the one with the saber... and something was off. Besides the really old looking mask, there was just something exuding from him that felt... he couldn't name it, but it was wrong.

Laeonas hadn't even hesitated in pulling the trigger as the masked figure bolted out the window and onto the roof.

"GOTCHA!"

The yell was practically a scream. Discharges from his blaster rifle rippled in his ears as bolts tore through the air. It was going to hit, he had made it, he had ma-!

...
...
...

Laeonas had maintained eye contact. He had observed, keenly, for seven seconds.

Seven. Seconds.

And it was like he had just vanished.

Where was he? He looked up and around, further down the street, observing the rows of buildings, looking down at the one he had scaled in the meantime.

How had he missed? How had he... no, there was something wrong. Something terribly wrong.

And than it clicked.

The saber.

The mask.

The power.

His entire body shook. He dropped his rifle, and he stepped back, trembling in terror. He didn't know what he had just seen, how it was like reality just was, and than wasn't- but there was something fundamentally evil in what he had just witnessed.

The entire exchange had been in the span of a handful of seconds. As the terrorist escaped, he probably wouldn't even notice it. His bolt had fired off aimlessly, probably to hit some durasteel wall a hundred meters away.

This was going to be a long week.
