The sun had still not set over the horizon on Atravis. To say that Altair was nervous was an understatement. This was his first mission as a Champion where he would be leading other acolytes through something. He had the option of doing the usual tomb exploration or jungle trekking. However, he wanted to choose something that would further his own studies into tactics and also lead to a potential gain for the Empire. As a result, he selected a planet that was situated on the Hydian Way, paving the way to Shuvamat and helping connect a bit of crucial territory.

Altair knew he couldn’t mess this up, and he was on the job as a Sith Champion, not at a party. As a result, he was adorned in his armor that was fixed up since New Alderaan. The Dantooine incident and aftermath was a solid kick he needed to shape himself up and get even more serious about his Sith duties.

His ship landed at the agreed upon location and he knew the acolytes and their shuttles would be arriving soon. The tielfing strode out first, waiting for the others to file in before him. He stood tall, his helmet obscuring his face, but the horns unmistakable from how his helmet was custom designed for them. Altair would address them as soon as they stood before him.

“Listen up,” He called out, “Today’s mission is not a drill,” Altair wanted to clear that notion right away, “This will be a joint operation between the Sith and the IAF, meaning we’re assigned Imperials from the IAC,” He wouldn’t spell any acronyms out, the acolytes should know all of that already, “Each of you will be managing a squad,” That meant ten Imperials, “And you will be responsible for them as the Sith officer. A mile behind me,” He tilted his head back before looking at the acolytes again, “Is a known rebel base. We know nothing about it. I need one of you to go in and scout out what we’re dealing with and report back. The rest of us will mobilize. Our objectives are to shut down any comms towers, sabotage escape and take the base.”

Altair looked across at them all, “Which one of you is going ahead? And are there any other questions before we begin?”

Wodan fidgeted inside his borrowed Senshi armour, the Acolyte had spent most of his remaining funds on the fancy clothes he had taken to the ball on Serenno. So he did not have the money to get himself a set of custom armour. The drop ship bounced around in the atmosphere as they rocketed down from the Starships far above the planet. “Twenty Seconds.” The pilot called out over the comm, the sweat on Wodan’s brow seemed to double in that time as the shuttle came to an abrupt stop on the surface. The ramp opened up letting the light of the sun bounce off the armour of the soldiers in front of him. The soldiers quickly ran out, their training and discipline taking hold of their actions. Wodan on the other hand was without their training or confidence, taking a gulp he reached over and picked up his spear before walking out of the shuttle.

He spotted the horned armour of the Champion leading this assault, the soldiers were already in formation awaiting orders. Wodan made his way over to the group at a small jog, the speed helping hide some of his nerves. The Fierrerro had never led men, or seen battle before, the fact he was doing both at once was terrifying for him. The hanging threat of failure and potential derailment of his revenge so early added a good few hundred pounds of pressure onto the Acolyte.

His head quickly turned to face the Champion as he began to lay out their mission. One of them had to volunteer, Wodan wondered if putting himself forward into the danger would help calm the nerves. He had heard a million stories about great soldiers and leaders forged in combat and pressure, but. Could he do it, sneak up, recon the entire base and make it back alive with his men? Another large gulp hidden by the mask and suit told him all he needed to know. Let someone else have this glory, his can come later.

Truth be told, Nicolae had thought his first mission would be a simpler one, the typical task that would be given to a rookie, like going to some backwater world and securing a small objective. And while the planet they were on was certainly not a very important one, he had been given ten men to lead already into a combat mission. Had they decided to do so because of his past, because of the fact that he had been destined to become a leader since his birth? He didn't know nor did he care, this is what he had been trained for...Even if the leadership skills he had been taught probably didn't matter much in the battlefield, but he didn't realize that.

As confident in himself as always, Nicolae left his transport, wearing the typical sith acolyte outfit and carrying with him his trusty lightsaber. The Anzat acolyte stood upright and still as Altair explained the mission, eyeing things that he found interesting as he listened such as his other acolytes, the squads getting into formation or Altair's impressive set of horns, wondering when would he earn the right to get something that was custom-made as well.

When the champion explained how he needed one of them to volunteer, Nicolae thought to himself for a moment. Just like Wodan, he knew of the stories of great leaders that went through the most arduous of tasks to become the great people they were. "I'll take care of it" The Anzat said, breaking the silence as he confidently took a step forward with a smile on his face. Unlike Wodan, though, he didn't mind being the one to do it, his life had been all abou killing people and sneaking around in order to survive, this job seemed right up his alley...It would be the easiest mission ever.

"Am I getting overconfident?" Nicolae thought to himself, pondering if he had just taken a job that was a bit too big for him, he had seen combat, but not war, after all "...Nah, no way, if anything I am not confident enough."

While Caerllion maintained a calm appearance, he was full of conflicted emotions. The young man felt both excited and nervous for what was going to happen today. He was going to participate in his first proper mission for the Sith Order, one where he would need to lead men against an enemy of the Empire.

The Acolyte didn’t mind being put in charge of men. After all he was a member of the nobility of Annwfyn, grand-nephew of the Queen and future leader of the House of Cyfnos. He was born to lead. However, Caerllion never thought that he was going to lead them in a battle. To be honest, while he studied the art of war, he never participated in one. The young man wondered if the theory that he learned would be useful in the field.

Dressed in a simple acolyte outfit, Caerllion waited with other two acolytes while the Champion that was responsible for teaching them explained what they were going to do. The Annfyn paid close attention to what the other Sith was talking, while at the same time thinking if he had problems walking around with these horns. Walking through a low door probably was difficult for him, the rebels would escape from him if they exploited this idea.

When the horned Sith asked for a volunteer to go first, Caerllion remained in silence. He didn’t want to jump into a situation that he barely had any knowledge about. The Annfyn preferred to watch the situation first, before doing something about it. He would let someone else go there first, then he would be able to learn with the possible errors that they made.

He had zero surprise with the fact that Nicolae was the one offering to go first. After the way that he was dressed in the gala, it was no surprise that he would want to go first. At least this time he wasn’t dressed like the poster boy of the ISC. Although if he did it, this could work as a perfect infiltration outfit. The rebels would not suspect the man dressed in the Consortium’s purple.

They would only think that he had a terrible taste.

Then, Nicolae walked away with a smile on his lips. The Annfyn remained emotionless, only crossing his arms while watching the scene. He wondered if the Anzat was thinking that they were here to have fun or because he wanted to show off to their horned teacher. Caerllion suspects of the last.

Altair had been given individual profiles of all three acolytes before he arrived. He knew they were all noble princes of some type and they even all looked similar. He could practically hear the crickets as none of them volunteered. He wasn’t entirely surprised, his tail swishing back and forth in agitation. However, that was when one of them stepped up. The tiefling’s helmet turned to regard Zamfir.

“Excellent,” He said after a moment, “Here’s what’s gonna happen,” He turned to regard the other acolytes that hadn’t stepped up, “You two are going to go ahead of us. You will cause distraction near the comms tower and take evasive maneuvers when they engage. You will do this so Zamfir and I can storm the comms tower and jam everything. If you and your squads are still alive, you will remain hidden and rendezvous with us for the final push into the base while they’re blind and their troops are dispersed from your distraction. I recommend getting creative with how you lure them out.”

Altair knew this would mortify both Cyfnos and Wodan, but this was their reward for waiting for someone else to step up. They would learn real quick that Sith didn’t play fair all the time. They all had a map of the terrain with the comms tower marked, “Lidar you will engage from the East, Cyfnos from the West,” He said before glancing at Zamfir, “You come with me.”

He didn’t leave much opportunity for debate, turning on his heel and walking towards a combat swoop bike. He hopped on and jutted his chin for Zamfir to join him. The rest of the men would have a choice of bikes or speeders as their mode of transportation.

“Shared comms channel is frequency 8. I need everyone reporting in at all times and to escalate when you're engaged. Do NOT get your men killed,” He said before zooming off towards a vantage point before they could protest.

Caerllion blinked at the Champion. Were they the ones going to make the distraction? Why? They weren’t the ones that offered themselves to do it. The Annfyn wondered if it was the Champion’s plan all the time, or if he only thought about it now. He never knew the horned Sith before, but he had the impression that the guy wasn’t all that smart. Perhaps he ended up needing to have his head partially empty to fit these horns.

While he felt tempted to fly on the Champion’s neck and to punch the smile off the Anzat’s face, Caerllion remained in silence. He wasn’t in the position to make enemies among the Sith, even less with one that was his superior. The Annfyn could discount his frustration with the rebels.

Once all the instructions were given, Caerllion turned to Wodan. “Well, here we go. Try to not get yourself killed.” the Annfyn was being serious. He would hate needing to deal with the Anzat alone, the Acolyte would throw the vampire at the first hole that he saw. At least this way would make him stop smiling.

Then, he walked toward the troops that were under his command. Stopping to look at them, Caerllion saw several men dressed in the typical uniform of the Sith troops staring back at him. He wondered what he should do now. The Champion didn’t expect that he was going to make a motivational speech, right? While he made classes of rethorics, he wasn’t good with improvising.

We need to make a distraction for the others.” he said, while looking at faces that were staring at him. “You, come here.” Caerllion said, while pointing to a trooper in particular. “What is your name?” the Annfyn received as answer to his question the name Maxwell Nilkstorm. The young man nodded, he wasn’t going to remember it after some minutes.

Alright, you are going to help me organize the operation and talk with your colleagues. I accept suggestions for strategies, too.” he heard the troopers murmuring among themselves about how he seemed to not know what he was doing. “Also, I can hear very well what you are saying. I don’t like to have my orders questioned.” the Acolyte felt satisfied when he heard the gulping of fear of the soldiers.

Caerllion turned away from his troopers and pointed toward the place where they needed to go. “To the West, we will make our distraction here.” if something happened to him, the Annfyn was going to kill Nikael. Even if the Anzat had barely anything to do with it, he only wanted an easy target to discount his frustration.

Wodan gritted his teeth behind the mask when the Champion made his remark about them leading a distraction force. Looks like that chance at his own glory was going to come faster than he thought, his fault for letting Nicolae take the initiative. Now Wodan was stuck trying to get ten men to follow his lead on his own, without the Horned Champion as back up. The Acolyte attempted to salute the disappearing figure of Altair as he sped off in the direction of the comms tower. The noble held the salute a little longer than necessary, only because he was trying to compose himself before he met with his squad.

Leaving the little assembly area, he glanced over at Caerllion. “You too.” He replied, with a little fake confidence. Stepping up to the ten man unit which had been assigned to him, he tried to look each one of them in the eye. Confidence, that is what he needed to show, otherwise his command would crumble, shame he forgot to remove his helmet when he was doing so.

“So…” His voice cracked for a second, great. The Sargent gave him a concerned look before Wodan could continue. “Our orders are to create a diversion for the strike team. Sargent, I believe you have the map.” The older man frowned for a second before nodding and bringing up a holo projection of the surrounding area. The squad circled round the projection, their eyes skipping between the blue landscape and the Acolyte. “Our team is to attack from the east, we can follow the depression we are in round to about here.” “Lieutenant, I would advise we actually go here. This is a probable killing zone.” The Sargent replied pointing to a point in the map further up, before pointing out the easy sight lines from the towers on Wodan’s preferred location.

He took a deep breath, great first mistake, luckily the Sargent didn’t want to die. “Thank you Sargent. We will make for your point then. I will take the lead.” He finished with fake bravado, hopefully the fact he would go first would earn back the faith he just lost in the squad. “Let's get moving.”

While at first confident and smiling, nothing had prepared the Anzat for what happened next. He expected the champion to either say nothing or maybe compliment him for his initiative, but he didn't expect him to switch the roles and actually give them an even worse task. Thank the force he volunteered himself though, scouting ahead was one thing, but being used as bait was more dangerous and quite humiliating in comparison.

With the smile now gone, Nicolae's eyes remained wide for a second before putting on a stoic face, eyeing at the other two for a moment as the Tiefling gave them their real orders...That probably pissed them off a lot, or at least he would be pissed off if he was in their shoes. Pissed off at both Altair and himself of course, chances are they probably hated his guts right about now...Well, too bad for them, Nicolae couldn't bring himself to care about burnt bridges between him and people he barely knew and had a much higher chance of dying.

"Yessir" He simply said in response to Altair telling him to come with him. Turning his head towards the other two and giving them a respectful nod before following the champion and signaling his squad to move out as well, a squad that was really glad they were paired up with the kid brave/stupid enough to willingly volunteer like that, of course, respecting both his bravery and the fact that they didn't have to be the ones to make a distraction thanks to him.

Nicolae joined Altair on the swoop bike, wondering if he had to put his hands around the man waist like in those cheesy romance movies before noticing that the bike had handle bars and opting for that. As they began making their way to the vantage point, the Anzat would curse himself for not bringing a helmet with him, something that would perhaps be more comfortable than feeling the air dragging against his face and ruining his hairstyle, but he would need to put up with that "So, do we have an initial plan I should know of or is it something we will need to come up with once we get there?" Nicolae asked Altair, his voice sounding almost as if he had a fan blowing directly into his mouth as he spoke, but clear enough to be understood.

The tiefling didn’t need the acolytes to be fan of his style. He didn’t need them to be his best friends. However, he did need them to be prepared for anything and shifting priorities. Nothing would expose them to that like changing up the variables.

The bike ride took only a few minutes until Altair found the spot he wanted to situate them in. It was an elevated hill that provided a vantage point over a communications tower and the base ahead of that. Altair stepped off the bike and looked through a set of microbinoculars, not having answered Zamfir while they were riding, “We will have to improvise a lot,” Altair said finally, “The insurgents pack up and mobilize quite frequently. This is a rare opportunity to attack a stationary base,” He explained before handing the microbinocs to Zamfir so he could view what was ahead of them.

The acolyte would see a communications building, but it basically looked like a makeshift hut with antennas perched on top. It would be easy to tell it wasn’t exactly well defended. Beyond the tower, if Zamfir zoomed in, he would be able to spot a hill with very rough terrain, “Their base is built into that hill, we believe,” Altair said with a sigh. It was going to be a pain hiking up that thing.

The tiefling reached for his comlink, “Lidar. Cyfnos. The communications building is sparsely guarded. Zamfir and I will be able to manage without assistance. Proceed towards the main base - visuals confirm it’s located atop the steep hill ahead. Apply same tactics - luring them as much as possible out into open terrain.”

Altair turned to look at Zamfir, “Acolyte, what do you propose as a course of action to take the communication building?”

Whatever the plan, it had to be pulled off without alerting anyone inside. If they got wind of it, they would comm back to their main base and it would jeopardize the entire mission.

—

Meanwhile, Wodan and Caerllion would quickly realize the terrain was extremely unforgiving. It wouldn’t be long before one of Wodan’s men identified a landmine and this would tip them off to scan for more. The man would report this to Wodan and it would be on Wodan to inform the rest of the team or not. Caerllion and his team wouldn’t know about the landmines just yet, but there were at least six ahead of them. Without Wodan sounding the alarms on their shared communications channels, it could very well result in casualties.

Caerllion and his men would run into a thick field of boggy swamp. It would be up to the group on figuring out how to navigate around it or through it. Navigating around it meant a lot of added time and dealing with mines, but going through it meant navigating through a bog they could sink into but avoiding landmines.

If Wodan and his men continued to traverse ahead, there was a makeshift encampment of a few rebel scouts. They had no idea they were being approached and this camp’s discovery would depend on whether or not Wodan or his Sargent had planned for careful assessment and navigating ahead. If they were caught by surprise, the encampment of four rebels would immediately engage Wodan and his men or possibly alert the main base.

It seemed that where Altair had chosen to gather the men initially drained down towards the base, the ground becoming wetter with every step, luckily it wasn’t turning into a bog but their boots were quickly becoming encased in mud and ripped grass. Wodan had taken the lead, the Sergeant about three paces off to his left and behind. The rest of the small squad fanned out to cover as much of the area as possible, the last thing they needed was to be snuck up on.

“Sarg.” One of the men to Wodan’s right called out in a restrained voice. Wodan turned to face the man as well as the soldier began using some hand signals to converse with the leader of the group. After a few seconds the Sargeant turned to face Wodan with a grim look on his face. Looking down to check the area he stepped gingerly towards the Sith Acoylte. “Lieutenant, we have landmines.” Luckily for Wodan he had a mask to cover the fear that just shot through his face. “I advise we switch to single file.” “Agreed.” With a few hand signals the men slowly one by one moved into a single file line behind Wodan and the Sergeant. “Private Moss, can take the lead Sir, he has good eyes and a knack for this.” He said pointing to the man who initially spotted the landmine.

Wodan thought for a moment, he still needed to show his leadership and ability to these men. Being out first was the easiest way to do that, plus he could use The Force to help him sense out the landmines ahead. “Have him second, but I can lead the way Sargeant, The Force is my eyes.”

The group began their slow advance through the minefield, Wodan’s eyes swept across the ground in front of him as The Force flowed out, pulsing like a sonar array trying to navigate around the few mines that were ahead of them. It wasn’t a thick layer of explosives, they seemed hasilty placed and more of an early warning system than a true deterrent, but it would delay the time it took them to get to their attack point.

They had passed the last mine about twenty metres ago, the fear and panic was slowly starting to subside in the Firrerreo when one of the men called out. “Sir…. His shout and life were cut short as a blaster bolt slammed into his face, destroying half his skull in a split second. Wodan’s eyes were locked on the collapsing corpse of the Private as blaster fire began to ring out around him. His squad dropped to the ground taking cover in the small depression they were traversing.

A bolt flew past almost clipping Wodan’s arms before the Sergeant leapt up and tackled the Sith Acoylte to the ground. “Lieutenant get ahold of yourself.” He screamed into his ear.

While they walked toward the base, Caerllion noticed how the path had started to become full with mud. At some point, the group would come to a stop. In front of them there was a boggy swamp. “Michael, we are going to walk around it.” the Annfyn said to the man that was at his right. The Acolyte didn’t want to march through all these puddles, those that they found while walking toward here was enough for him.

Sir, my name is Maxwell.” the trooper said, but the Acolyte only nodded. “I think that we should at least send some scouts first, in case there are rebels wanting to ambush us.” they don’t know the conditions that they were going to face, the enemy could be waiting to attack them at any moment.

Good idea, Manuel!” the trooper groaned after the Acolyte said his name wrong again. “You four go in front of us scouting for any rebel. We will be right behind.” Caerllion said, while pointing to four of the soldiers that were close to him. They didn’t seem to be excited to go, but did it without voicing any protest. As the four walked around the swamp, the Annfyn and the others followed him. The young man was already thinking that they would soon pass through it without any problem.

However, he was totally wrong. The four scouts had barely started to look around in search of possible ambushes, when one of them stepped on a landmine and exploded. The sound was too loud for Caerllion’s Annfyn hearing and he moved his hands to cover his ears. While doing it, he stepped back and lost his balance, falling with his rear on the mud covered ground.

Sir, are you ok?” Maxwell said, while helpíng the Annfyn get off the ground. He only nodded at the soldier, before turning to look at how his pants were covered with mud. What a joy. He was hating this mission more and more every second. “It was a landmine. I think that we should find another way to reach the base. There could be more in our path.

Yes, you are right. Tell the others that we are going to cross the swamp.” Caerllion said, before turning back to the boggy path that they needed to cross. Feeling the cold on his rear, the Acolyte only hoped that he would not end with more mud on his clothes.

—------------------------------------------

He was so wrong! During the crossing of the swamp, the Annfyn has fallen in the mud not only one time, but fifteen! And in the most different way! From tripping in a hidden rock and falling with his face, to having his boot stuck in deep mud and falling with his back on the ground. He even got stuck in a hole, needing some of his men to help him get free.

Caerllion was covered from head to toe in swamp mud, looking like a swamp monster from a vintage horror holomovie. He had heard the soldiers suppressing laughs and it made him furious. The young man blames his misfortunes in the horned Champion and that stupid Anzat. He was going to rip Nicolae’s appendages off with his bare hands!

At least, no one has died again because of landmines and they are now close to the hill where the base was located. While he tried to remove some of the mud from his body, Caerllion watched the base in the distance. He wondered what else was going to happen before they were close enough to start the distraction. The Annfyn wanted so badly to kill some rebels to vent his frustration.

The Anzat acolyte stepped away from the bike, trying to fix his hair a little bit and hiding the disgust on his face from the fact that he had accidentally swallowed a bug, his eyes fixing on the Tiefling once he told them that they had to improvise...Well, that figures, can't be too organized against a bunch of rebel idiots that can barely stay in one place, or at least that's the conclusion he reached.

"That figures, better to make it count then." Nicolae added before grabbing the binoculars and taking a look at the communications tower...If you could even call it that, the noble started to think that they had gotten something wrong because this looked more like a scrap sculpture made by Jawas than anything else, did they even need sith for this task? Maybe they were being soft on the three acolytes after all.

At least he was sure that's what the other two nobles were thinking now, since the comms tower being so easy meant that they didn't need to act as bait, lucky them, Nicolae was sure they would be doing fine now, what was the worst that could happen to them? It was very clear the enemy was not prepared at all, hell, without any communications, they would probably take the base with great ease and take the credit for it, lucky them.

Just like Altair, Nicolae took a little bit before answering, thinking about the ways they could go about it before finally speaking up "We could get as close as we can before attacking from two different places, since there doesn't seem to be that many of them, that would mean their forces would be stretched thin and they wouldn't have enough bodies to hold a position long enough to adapt and set up proper defensive positions, right?" Nicolae explained, this idea being the only one that occured to him besides "get there and murder people until we win", it was sensible enough in his humble opinion. Not only that, but it also would allow him and his squad to fight on their own for a little bit and prove they weren't completely carried by the champion...He just hoped Altair didn't find it a stupid tactic for one reason or another.

Altair heard the explosion and cursed to himself, realizing that Cyfnos’ party tripped off a landmine. Based on the NCOs that actually had the sense to comm in, it sounded like Lidar and his men were actively being engaged by enemies. The tiefling growled into the comms, “Lidar! Cyfnos! Report in! What the fuck is going on? Why didn’t you call in the landmines?”

He had no time to yell at them, turning to look at Zamfir, “Base is likely alerted, we have to take this tower by force and get our hands on any intel we can,” Without saying much else, he hopped back on the speeder, waiting for the acolyte before he drove it down towards the tower. The entire mission went sideways and the element of surprise was completely lost.

There were some blaster bolts as they approached the tower, but the Imperials provided cover to allow Zamfir and Altair to move in. The tiefling used the Force to yank the door right off its hinges, storming inside as the people scattered. He looked at Zamfir, “Round them up for capture,” There were four terrified comms personnel and intelligence analysts in there. The Imperials were able to engage any Rebels and kill them. Altair quickly gathered up any useful data he could while another soldier worked to jam comms.

Once the tower was cleared, Altair would start making his way to the base with Zamfir. He pulled his comlink up as he drove, “CYFNOS! Provide Lidar with reinforcements! He’s actively engaged!”

—

Wodan was having a very rough time. The soldiers in the camp were relentless. One of them had a flamethrower and he ignited the forestry where Wodan and his soldiers were advancing. Through thick smoke, bolts were peppering them and they were taking heavy fire. One by one Wodan’s men began to drop like flies, over half his group charred and dying next to him. They were screaming and clawing towards Wodan in their desperate please to live. The acolyte was surrounded by agony, blood, viscera and chaos. The scouts were armed to the teeth and carried superior weapons, pressing forward.

One of the rebels primed and tossed a grenade directly into the depression where Wodan was cowering while he wasn’t looking. Another rebel had already contacted the base to alert them of an incoming attack. As a result, the soldiers in the base hunkered down, not intending to leave the advantage they held. They began to go up towards the single turret on the base to load up ammo and activate it for the incoming forces.

Meanwhile, Maxwell and the other Imperials heard the order come in to support Wodan and that squad. He looked at his muddy Sith officer and grimaced, “I… we’re not prepared for any kind of engagement,” He blurted out, “We’ll all get killed!”

The other Imperials nodded in agreement, attempting to use their NCO seniority to see if they could convince the Sith officer to give the order to stay behind instead and proceed to the base. It was clear they had no confidence in Cyfnos after his theatrical performance across the swamp. Another soldier stepped up and glared at Maxwell.

“There are Imperials dying out there! We have to help them!”

“WE ALREADY LOST A MAN! WE’LL LOSE EVERYONE IF WE DO THIS!”

An argument started and would continue until Cyfnos made the call on what to do.

Chaos surrounded Wodan, his eyes dancing from one side to side behind the mask trying to find some sense of normality in the surroundings. People were screaming over the sound of blaster fire, trying to coordinate some kind of attack or retreat, Wodan couldn’t tell over the pounding of his blood in his ears. The Sergeant was shaking his shoulders screaming at him, but after no response he shook his head, rolled to one side and began to try and rally the squad, another had already been lost to blaster fire.

The orchestra of carnage all around him finally gave way to a roar of fire and fury as one of the rebel soldiers began to advance on the group, a Flamethrower in hand. The Sergeant had moved the squad further up the small incline the rebels were holding, allowing the trooper easy access to the flank of the Imperial troops. Two quickly burst into flames, their lives snuffing out in an instant a third was not so lucky, falling to the ground he tried to roll to put out the flames. But it was too late, the body slowly rolled to a stop a few feet away from Wodan. The Sith Acolyte was still in shock when his eyes came to rest on the flashing red light of a grenade only a foot from his face.

Something inside of him, more instinct than rational thought gripped the grenade tightly with The Force, launching the explosive away from the Acolyte and back into the minefield, exploding in mid air above the boggy patch of earth. The adrenaline began to pump through the young man, snapping him from his state of shock at least for that moment. Flipping over on his stomach he tried to take some stock of the warzone ahead of him, only four of his men were still breathing, one was wounded, blood oozing from his leg. The flamer was slowly approaching the small divert they were defending, two of the other rebels were peppering the hidey hole with blaster fire, the final man had his blaster aimed at Wodan.

Something inside him told him to duck just as a blaster bolt flew over his head. Tapping his ear to bring up comms he tried to signal the rest of the group. “Sargeant, we need to pull back.” He called, peering over the lip at the group, the older man turned to face him as he heard Wodan’s voice. A mixture of confusion, relife and anger spread across his face. “If we move we are dead. Sir.” The Sargeant replied with bitterness. Wodan had definitely lost whatever trust the Sergeant had in him, now more than ever he needed to take some action.

The Flamer was the biggest threat to all of their survival, he needed to be removed from play. Wodan could just about see him from his divet, closing his eyes the Firrerreo pulled whatever Force energy he could into his body. The adrenaline running through him seemed to be more a hindrance than the boon every instructor told him it would be. Finally when he felt ready he opened his eyes and reached out and tried to grip hold of the Flamer and send him flying. As the invisible hand reached around the man however, another blaster bolt slammed into the mud next to Wodan snapping his attention away from the enemy. As The Force began to fade away from him and the target, Wodan used the last of his desperation to pluck at the Flamer’s foot. The slick ground gave way under the added weight of the fuel tank. Causing him to slip slightly and fall down onto one knee, hand splayed to make sure he and his weapon did not crash into the ground. Hopefully that would be enough for his squad to take advantage of.

Because I was trying to find a way to get out of a mud hole! Caerllion wanted to scream it back to the horned Champion when he contacted the Annfyn’s group through the comm link. The Acolyte took a deep breath, while trying to remove the dirt from his clothes. Hopefully nothing worse would happen.

Once again he was wrong. The Champion contacted him again, this time to order him to go help Wodan. The soldiers under his command protested, they believed that they weren’t prepared to deal with the rebels. Caerllion didn’t blame them. He wasn’t prepared for anything beyond a bath in his nice bathroom in the Palace of Cyfnos. The Annfyn only wanted to free himself from all this mud. It was in parts of his body that he never thought that it could be.

The soldiers were arguing about what they should do, while Caerllion tried to think what decision he should take. The Annfyn could stay here and have his men have some rest, but if he did it, he would be disobeying the orders of his superior. It could make him be punished or worse!

Of course, without his help Wodan could probably be killed. Maybe Caerllion would feel bad and a bit guilty because of it, but he would feel worse with a punishment. Due to that, he decided to obey Altair’s orders. However, they needed some strategy. If they ran toward the battle, the Acolyte was certain that they would end up being killed.

Unfortunately, he couldn’t think of anything. This mud was starting to hitch his skin. His body was so full of it that Caerllion was certain that if he lay down in the ground, he would easily disappear from sight. Such thought gave an idea to the young man.

We are going to help them.” he finally said to the soldiers. Some of them protested, while others agreed with him. “I have a plan to allow us to approach the rebels without being noticed. We can use mud and plants of the swamp to make a camouflage and then surprise the enemy. It’ll work!” he said it trying to not only convince them, but also himself.

His men didn’t seem so excited to be covered in mud, but they obeyed his orders. Caerllion nodded with satisfaction after they were all covered by mud and leaves, looking like part of the environment. “Michael, you don’t need to fear. It’s going to work.” by this point Maxwell had stopped trying to correct the Acolyte, resigning himself to apply some more mud to his face. “Let’s go, everyone. We are going to help them.” after saying that, the Annfyn marched with his men to help Wodan. Everything was going to happen right.

By this point, Caerllion wasn’t surprised that their camouflage didn’t work and the rebels easily spotted the group trying to approach from behind, while they were distracted fighting Wodan’s group. In the end the mud only made them feel their skin itch and look ridiculous. While they engaged the enemy, with blasters bolts flying to every direction and he used his lightsaber to deflect some shots, the mud covered Annfyn thought that if he survived it, he was going to kill Nikolae. This peacock vampire was going to pay.

Altair looked through microbinocs and could spot the base, “Fuck,” He growled, “They’re preparing a turret,” He glanced over at Zamfir, “Keep moving in towards the base and scope out the defense. I’m going to go get the others,” Altair simply, looking sternly at the acolyte, “This means you have command of all of the men here right now. Don’t engage anyone unless they discover you and fire on you - your duties are to strictly report back what you observe and suggest a plan of action. Retreat immediately if they send a full assault.”

The tiefling whirled around and quickly made his way towards Lidar and Cyfnos.

A small group of soldiers began to creep through the woods towards Zamfir. Unless he observed and spotted them, he and his men would be taken by surprise.

—

The flamer dropped down when he was attacked, but he was relentless. As Wodan’s squad advanced on the downed man, the soldier surprised them by igniting the flamethrower from his half crouched position. He immediately set one of the men ablaze, and he unfortunately slipped over the uneven terrain, sending him catapulting back into the other men. As a result of the scramble and frenzy, multiple men were set ablaze. They were screaming and flailing, the stench of burning flesh filling the air, their agonized cries something that would be etched in Wodan’s mind forever. Every single man in his unit was gone.

—

One of the rebels was dropped by the approach of Cyfnos’ men because he was shot by surprise. However, the element of surprise was soon lost and the second rebel whirled around to spray bolts towards Cyfnos and his group. The flamethrower man began to walk over towards them as well, pulling out his blaster and firing off a shot to instantly drop one of Caer’s men. His flamethrower was useless against the people covered in thick mud, and he didn’t bother even blasting them. How did they know to prepare counter measures to his fire? Did they have intelligence??

–

A moment later, Altair caught up to the group, removing his helmet to put it on his hip. He could see the fire ahead and his skin was more effective than armor there. The tiefling quietly approached the scene, not spotting Wodan just yet. Altair arrived on the scene just in time to see the flamethrower man level his blaster at Cyfnos. Without warning, the tiefling used the Force to yank the man towards him, rendering the blaster bolt useless.

The flamer turned his flamethrower on Altair and unleashed a jet of fire at him. To his horror, Altair remained standing despite it. The tiefling ran right through the fire and bodily slammed the man down to the ground. Altair prepared a solid attack, but that was when the remaining rebel jumped on him from behind. He drew out a knife and jammed it down, the blade digging into the back of Altair’s shoulder.

The tiefling growled in pain, using the Force to throw the rebel off. Unfortunately the altercation resulted in the flamethrower man rolling out from under him and scrambling back. Altair didn’t hesitate as he unleashed a heavy blast of lightning at the flamer from the ground.

The remaining rebel began to stumble back to attack Altair again and would interrupt the lightning unless Lidar or Wodan did something about him. If the tiefling was allowed to complete his lightning, it would cook the flamer and finally drop him.

When Caerllion saw one of the rebels falling after being taken by their surprise attack, he thought that their camouflage was going to work. However, it seemed that only this one was idiotic enough to not see their approach, all the other rebels turned against them imediatelly. One of them immediately opened fire at the Sith team, forcing them to find cover.

While his men went to seek some protection against the blaster shots, Caerllion slowly backed away using his lightsaber to deflect it. The Annfyn knew that they needed to join forces with Wodan, but they wouldn’t be able to find the Firrerreo’s group without eliminating the rebels that were between them. And by the way that they were fighting, doing it would be very difficult. He wondered if the situation could get worse from what it already was.

They have a flamethrower!” Maxwell's scream reminded Caerllion that nothing on this entire mission seemed to be going to happen well. He turned to look at what the Sith soldier was pointing at and saw one of the rebels setting some troopers on fire. They probably were Wodan’s men. The Annfyn hoped that the Firrerreo was fine, he still didn’t want to deal with Nikolae alone. He preferred to be set on fire rather than doing it.

The Force seemed to have listened to his wish, because the rebel turned the flamethrower toward him and his troops. With how this mission was happening, Caerllion was already prepared to be burned like a piece of charcoal. However, to his surprise, the flames had little effect over him and his man. The mud that they used as camouflage had protected them from the fire. Falling 15 times on the swamp had saved his life.

At least something on this entire mission had a good result!

Suck that, bitches!” he screamed triumphantly at the rebels, losing his princely composure for a bit. His troopers turned to look at him as if he had gone crazy, while the rebels stared at him thinking if all the Sith were mad like him. The Annfyn ignored them, he was happy that being covered with mud wasn’t making him look so stupid anymore.

Of course, soon the mission returned to its disastrous nature. Caerllion watched the rebel with the flamethrower pull a blaster and point it toward him. Due to his moment of childishness, the Acolyte wasn't going to be able to use his lightsaber to defend himself against the shot. Damn you Nicolae! He was certain that it would be the last on his mind before he died.

However, the Force once again decided that another good deserved to happen during this entire mission. Altair jumped into the scene, seeming to have come out of nowhere, and attacked the rebel with the flamethrower. Caerllion watched the Tiefling run through the flames without getting burned and slam the enemy.

When another rebel put a knife at the Champion’s shoulder, Caerllion moved to help him. However it ended not being necessary, because Altair had thrown him away with the Force and moved to electrocute with Force lightning the flamer.

The scene of the other Sith fighting against the rebels so fiercely and surrounded by these flames that illuminated his armor reminded the Annfyn of one of these old paintings of heroic knights. “My hero.” he murmured while his face got red, feeling ashamed for needing to be helped in the first place.

Then, he saw that the guy that stabbed Altair was moving to attack again. If the peacock Vampire and Wodan didn’t show any signal of going to help the Champion, Caerllion would send a powerful blast with the Force to make the rebel fly away. He owes one to his hero.

Even though it was less than he had wanted the Flamethrower was for a moment down and Wodan’s troops were approaching fast. Anger was written on their faces as they went to seek out revenge for their fallen comrades. As if in an act of true malice and evil, the flamer looked Wodan straight in the eyes, a wicked smile appearing on his face, the Acolyte knew what was about to happen but could only watch as the rebel turned and unleashed his weapon on his squad. The roar of the fire was all he could hear as watched the Sergeant’s body ignite into a burning pyre of pain and fear. Wodan wasn’t really sure what happened next, his mind seemingly blacking out the deaths of the final members of his team, the next he knew his entire squad was on the floor dead, their screams echoed in the back of his mind as he looked at their smouldering bodies.

Looking up from the blackened figures he spotted the Tiefling commander, he had seemingly come to save him from death and condemn him to humiliation. The last comment Altair had given him was ‘Do NOT get your men killed.’ Now ten brave soldiers of the Empire lay in the dirt, the weight of their deaths heavy on the Firrerrian’s shoulders. Only his death could make this day worse, or would that be better? Less a strain on the mission on Altair, Carellion, Nicolae and the Empire.

Wodan watched as the Tiefling fought with the two remaining members of the rebel camp, removing obstacles which eleven men could not even hope to budge. Lightning erupted from Altair’s fingertips arcing through the smoke of the burning landscape, the flashing light illuminated the soldier charging at the Tieflings' back.

Wodan raised his hand and tried to summon The Force to him, but nothing seemed to come. The Sith had no anger, no rage, no pain, no emotion to draw upon and will The Force to do his bidding. Wodan was at that moment empty, his mind having shut down to protect his soul from the carnage he had witnessed in those past ten minutes.

After having his men round the prisoners for capture, Nicolae came back to Altair just as he started shouting into the comms...It seemed like the two other noblemen were not having as good of a time as Nicolae and Altair. In fact, they had actually managed to make it worse for them after as they had gotten themselves noticed and caught before the two of them brought down the enemy's communications, so the base was getting ready for them and Nicolae was probably going to be the first one to know exactly how well defended they were, great.

"It will be done" Nicolae simply said as he looked ahead, his eyes locked on the base as Altair left the scene before his lips turned into a smile and he looked at all the soldiers that he now had to lead, now this looked like a great opportunity for him to shine "All right men, the other teams seem to be underperforming, so let's show them how the empire's finest do their work, let's move out!" Unending arrogance turned into charisma, the Anzat vampire gave his little speech before leading his now even bigger squad from the front, heading towards the base, hopefully in a stealthy manner as they now ventured up the hill, trying to remain unnoticed until they were close enough to gather intel.

...Unfortunately, they were not alone, another group of rebels managed to circle around them, now behind the sith troops as they were going up the hill. Suddenly blaster bolts would come their way, shots immediately taking out two of the soldiers before Nicolae could even react. However, the Anzat acolyte would take the initiative and adapt quite quickly, turning his lightsaber on and deflecting blaster fire that would have taken out more of his men "Get behind cover and return fire, now!" Nicolae yelled as he kept deflecting blaster fire, the sith forces quick to get behind nearby trees, rocks and other terrain formations before shooting back, actually taking the rebels by surprise with how quickly they had adapted and fired back at them.

Of course, the rebels still had advantage when it came to cover, the dense tree making most of the blaster fire coming their way missing their mark, and that just wouldn't do "Cover me, I shall personally paint the soil red with them!" The Anzat shouted before advancing towards the tree, able to reflect the blaster fire that actually came his way thanks to the suppressive fire coming out of his very massive firing squad.

Slowly but surely, Nicolae got closer and closer to the rebels, his walking and use of the lightsaber elegant, but his face and, most of all, his eyes, betrayed his true nature as he looked at the rebels like a predator would look at their prey. A rebel, wielding a flamethrower, nervously aimed at Nicolae as his friends died from blaster fire, be it from the soldiers or reflected by Nicolae himself. However, the Anzat would manage to notice the rebel in time, calling upon the force just as the rebel pulled the trigger, the fire would have reached Nicolae and burned him to a crisp had he not used the force to hold the fire burst back...And then sent it towards the woods.

The flame would return to the rebel, whose explosive tank would blow up as a response, setting trees and rebels on fire alike. Many would come out from the woods just to get away from the flames. A lucky few unscathed, getting a quick death as Nicolae's men shot them down. Others, however, would come out of the woods in flames and screaming in horror as they burned to death. Their pain making Nicolae feel ecstatic...yet guilty as well for feeling like that, and even guiltier for getting hungry as a result.

Turning around and towards his troops, Nicolae gave them a nod of approval before marching forward once more "That was a nice 'warm up', but make sure to keep a keen eye on your surroundings, I'd rather have them not take us by surprise again...Even if it doesn't matter much when they are so pathetic." Nicolae didn't need to say anything else, now they just had to properly scout the base...Hell, maybe they could take it by themselves, Nicolae would think about it, depending on how heavily fortified the base was.

As the lightning hit the rebel, there was a small explosion. Thanks to Cyfnos, the second rebel was thrown off course and towards the blast. As a result both men dropped to the ground, finally taken out of the fight. There was a moment of pause as everyone took a breath from the chaos. Altair’s chest rose and fell as he began to feel the pangs of pain in the back of his shoulder. The tiefling turned to look at Cyfnos.

“Good work,” He nodded, “And good thinking on the mud and this flamethrower,” He remarked without having any idea that Cyfnos tripped practically the entire way across the swamp field. Altair walked towards the ditch where Wodan was cowering, but there was no anger on his face. He leaned down and extended a hand to yank Wodan to his feet and out from where he was hiding.

“No one gets left behind,” He said as he gazed into the acolyte’s eyes. He could see Wodan was completely shaken and his entire unit was decimated. Altair walked around and stopped by each dead body, “The men knew what they signed up for just as you must learn. Learn from it but don’t fear it,” He walked back towards Wodan, grabbing the noble's hand to open his palm. He dropped all the collected dog tags from the dead men into his hand before closing his fingers over them, “And never forget.”

Altair clapped him on the shoulder before leading him towards where Cyfnos and his mud squad were. The tiefling clapped another hand on Cyfnos’ shoulder, not caring that his hand was now caked in mud, “Get your heads in the game, gentlemen, because we gotta assault the main base now,” He looked at each of them, “We’ll do this together. Are you with me?” He asked as he managed a faint smile. He was still bleeding from his wound but there was no time to inspect it.

With that, the tiefling began to lead the way towards the main base. He pulled up his comlink, “Zamfir, status? We’re coming towards you now.”
