Well the age of the Samurai took place from 1185-1868 meaning they ruled for almost seven hundred years. In fact they weren't completely defeated except with the assistance of American military knowledge and hardware. They conquered the Ninja, though the Ninja still exists, where as Samurai do not. They didn't do too badly.
