Actually, Harrison Ford has stated in several interviews that he does not like the character. Ford says that Solo is, in a nutshell, a stereotypical hero. A role that he did not want to be remembered for. People have and always will remember Ford as Solo rather than other more meaningful characters he has played.

Ford wanted Solo to die in Return of the Jedi to give the film more "grit" but Lucas did not approve of killing off the character because he felt that Han merchandise would not sell as well if he did so. Besides the incredible chunk of change they offered Ford to star in The Force Awakens, one of the main reasons he agreed to take part in the film was the death of Solo.
