The coins? They were Lujayn’s conduit? It made sense now why the presence had persisted for so long. The nerve of her, defiling the Demici heirloom in such a manner. As much as she disliked to admit it, Sybella acknowledged the method of the madness; what better way hide than in plain sight. If she remembered correctly, those who followed the dark side sometimes imprinted their essence on various items (though more often than not, it was holocrons). Lujayn had acted deviously, knowing that her next potential host would wear those coins in one fashion or another, as per tradition. For whatever reason though, she had remained dormant until Sybella took possession of them.

Closing her eyes, she tried once more to sense the stagnant signature that was Lujayn. The phantom often lingered, choosing as and when to resurface. Yet, surprisingly, Sybella couldn’t sense her. Fragments, perhaps. Traces, maybe? But her actual consciousness? It was gone. For now, at least.

Her cousin deduction was accurate, as always. Lujayn had (annoyingly) been a part of Sybella for some time now. “When she first appeared, I thought I was going mad. She’d just appear, out of nowhere.” The first time happened whilst at the Temple on Yavin IV. She saw the woman in red, yet many of her fellow Jedi could not. “I thought I could deal with her myself. But she wore me down; she just kept getting stronger.”

Fatigue had played a major part in that. Sybella had run herself haggard, taking one mission after another in order to better occupy her mind. Not only that, but Lujayn had chipped away at her from her inside, spitting and hissing words of discord. Admittedly, it was a lot even for the Jedi knight to handle. With an groan, Sybella hung head and rattled her fingers through her disheveled hair.“I felt…ashamed. Having something like that, something like her, attached to me. I didn’t want other Jedi to get involved.”

But thinking more on the matter, Sybella realised she had perhaps done more harm than good. At times, Lujayn’s influence had slipped in, making her Knight lash out and act erratic on more than one occasion. One moment in particular came to mind.

The gala.

“I’m sorry, Kali, about…before. What I said…The accusations I made.” Words couldn’t describe how much to regretted that moment. The evening had started out so well; Serenno was liberated, Kali had brought with her an apparent paramour. Even when having to fight the pirates, the trio had managed well enough. Then it was all ruined with Sybella’s paranoia. She loved her cousin dearly, and the silence that followed after the altercation had been hard to tolerate; they had their own lives, their own allegiances, but they were still family, sharing the same flesh and blood.

“Can you…forgive me?”

Even if Sybella's brain still seemed slow after the Jedi had been so vehemently weakened, she seemed to understand. Not only that, she even seemed to realize her cousin was right- Kalique read that into her facial expressions- and the Jedi Knight slowly began to unravel.

Kalique was perhaps even a little surprised by how Sybella immediately admitted that the spirit had been there for a while and she hadn't told anyone about her, which was why she had to suppress flinching. "Oh Syb...the red lady was counting on that I bet". Pride, guilt, shame. Surely, telling anyone that you've been possessed by an evil spirit wasn't easy, but it was probably even more difficult to do it within the Jedi Order.

"You could have come to me" she suddenly threw in, not wanting to offer a simple, not really helpful 'could have' sentence, but to make it clear that Kalique would have helped. "You know I've gathered quite some expertise in this sector". She constantly had to deal with such spirits and she was trained to deal with them.

"Back on Serenno...maybe I should have already pursued you. Something was off. I felt it the whole time" she quietly admitted, her gaze drifting towards the floor for a moment before her emerald eyes flicked back up. Kalique wasn't the one to blame here, but maybe the ghost could have been stopped much earlier which would have prevented more collateral damage.

And then her cousin continued by apologizing for the ball on Serenno that also seemed an eternity away. She maintained eye-contact for a while, at least until Sybella looked away. She felt her pain, again the guilt and the shame, but she also knew what these emotions entailed.

"Don't. Let bygones be bygones. You lashed out, but don't worry, I wasn't too affected by it. It's not like this had been the first time we had such a dispute". A slight smirk tugged at her lips as she gave back something much lighter and playful. "Of course I can...you weren't yourself back then". She had been relatively annoyed and there had been a part inside her that had basically closed this whole Serenno chapter. Of course she had immediately searched for her missing cousin as soon as her parents had informed her because a much bigger part of her still loved her.

Kalique hadn't been super attached to her family for quite some time, but these bonds still existed and so obviously, this wasn't over. "I'm just glad you're better now and that the ghost is banished from this realm". She couldn't sense the presence any more, but as strong as she had gotten, perhaps the ghost was good at veiling its presence. "Can you promise me you'll take care back at the temple and make sure this is over?" her tone grew more serious then as she was honestly asking Sybella to do what was necessary.

Kali meant well, Sybella knew that, but she couldn’t help but shake her head. “I…didn’t want to bother you, or anyone else for that matter, with my burdens.” Of course, her cousin wouldn’t have seen like that. They may have had their own lives, their own duties and allegiance, but Sybella knew if Kali ever needed anything, she would do everything in her power to help. She also understood then the irony of her own inaction.

“I’m the eldest, aren’t I? I’m meant to be…better. Perfect.” An unrealistic expectation, yes. And one entirely conceived within the makings of her own mind. More often than not, the pressure the Jedi felt came from her own high standards. Kalique would know more than any - Sybella dreamed of being a great Jedi, like the ancestors that came before. The shadows of their legacy were long and vast; trying to live up to them often made the Knight feel like she was…lacking.

It was a relief though, to know her cousin bore no ill feelings. She wasn’t petty, not in that way and Sybella appreciated that. They also shared the same sentiments; it felt like a weight had been taken off her shoulders, a pressure elevated from within her mind; Sybella didn’t feel so claustrophobic anymore. Still her eyes drifted over the the nearby table, where the mangled mass of silver coins lay. They were largely intact, for the most part, but the evidence of scorching was still very much present. Her mother would have a heart attack, seeing the family heirloom in such a state; they’d need to be restored to their former state, if possible.

With a sigh, the Jedi laid back, rubbing the back of her neck as if to ease a lingering ache.

Kalique obviously wanted Sybella to follow up on the matter of the spectre. Just the thought of having that conversation brought her grief; despite her best intentions, no doubt the masters would give her lecture. She had, after all, acted quite irresponsibly. What if the possession persisted? People could have been hurt, or worse..

‘What was Lujayn doing in a library? She was searching for something. Information…’ Casting her mind back, Sybella tried to recalls bits and pieces of knowledge garnered from days of reading. It did nothing but give her an ache some migraine. Abandoning the matter for now, the knight would acquiesce to her cousin’s request - Kali wouldn’t drop the topic otherwise.

“I will. I’ll speak to the Order, upon my return…”

Maybe. Part of her hesitated somewhat. If Lujayn was (for the most part) vanquished, did she really need to the bother the higher ranks with such details? She’d think on it. For now, she wanted to rest once more
