House Thornclair of the Cliffs

Defense: Beacons Hold sits perched upon the high rocky cliffs overlooking the mouth of the Bay of Crabs. Surrounded on three sides by sheer cliffs plunging into the sea, it's triple towers, formidable keep, and high, thick, whiterock curtain walls have guarded the Vale from Southern threats for hundreds of years. Many in the Vale consider it second only to the Eyrie itself and, like the Eyrie, Castle Thorn has never been taken by force. Rumor has it that the cliffs themselves are riddled with secret tunnels and dungeons... (1 Superior Castle) (51)

Influence: House Thornclair is among the oldest Houses in the Vale, dating back to the Andal Invasion, and have a long and storied history. For centuries they enjoyed seemingly unbridled success and prosperity, and have always garnered favor amongst the Lords of the Vale. While they are not widely known in the more far flung reaches of the seven kingdoms, they are an important player in Lord Arryn's court. (37)

Land: House Thornclair controls both a small but strategic stretch of mountainous coastline overlooking the Bay of Crabs, and is charged with guarding the Vale's portion of the bay against pirates and smugglers. The small town of Valedge sits just beyond the castle walls, with the smallfolk's wharves and fisheries meandering walkways spider-web their way down the cliffs.(1 Coastal Mountain with a small town) (34)

Law: Like much of the Vale, the lands of house Thornclair have proved difficult to manage. Mountain clan raiders are a constant bother along the road, and even the sparse aspen forests of the foothills near the Castle are not entirely safe. Smugglers, likewise, prove ever elusive, and even the occasional pirate stalks the mouth of the Bay of Crabs. It takes constant effort to keep these bandits in check. (12)

Population: The bulk of House Thornclair's smallfolk occupy the small town of Valedge. While not a full service port, the town does serve as a stopover for smaller trade vessels. Fishing combines and tiny bands of mountain sheep herders smaller than hamlets dot the coast and rugged mountains. (19)

Power: Though small, House Thornclair's forces are veterans of dozens of skirmishes against the marauding mountain tribes, smugglers, and pirates. They are well drilled in the defense of their stronghold- especially their cohort of seaguards and warships- though they do not possess the ability to project much strength beyond their borders. Wealth: While their small holdings of land and population have prevented the House from gaining true wealth, their strategic position and small trading post have garnered them some measure of prosperity. Chella of the Black Ears Clan

Bio

A member of the Black Ears Clan by birth and by upbringing, Chella came to serve the House of Thornclair when a large raiding party that she was a part of was betrayed from within by members of another Clan who had old Bad Blood with her clan. Her friends were killed and Chella was to be killed too, eventually, when the raiding party was attacked and killed by a patrol of warriors of House Thornclair.



Initially believed to have been a smallfolk woman captured by raiders, she was taken to the seat of House Thornclair and given a chance to rest and recover. Rather than lie and sneak away to rejoin her clan, Chella's own version of honour demanded that she honour the life debt she had incurred by needing to be rescued by the Andals and their nobles. She revealed herself to be a clan member and swore herself to the service of House Thornclair until such a time as her debt would be paid.



She has yet to explain to anyone what it would take to repay said debt - when asked she merely responds "How many stones make a Mountain?"



There was initially disbelief and she was treated with almost open hostility and mistrust until she managed to earn the trust of the House by repeatedly assisting the House in defending their lands from raids conducted by the Mountain Clans, even those of her own Clan. Primarily she works as a scout for the House Thornclair but has been known to supplement her own income with hunting and trapping wild game.

Keen Senses - Awareness - Each time you would test awareness to notice something, you may re-roll a number of 1s equal to the number of bonus dice you posses for the Notice specialty. Also, increase your passive Awareness result by a number equal to your Cunning ranks.
Hardy - Endurance - You are exceptionally healthy and can recover from injuries rapidly.


Vices and Drawbacks

Disturbing Habit - Persuasion - Cutting ears off beaten, but living, foes - Can be used for intimidation but in all other attempts at Persuasion results in negative modifier.
Outcast - Status - Members of the Mountain Clans are immediately looked down upon by all members of society not of their specific clan.

Born the second child of House Thornclair, Ayva Thornclair has always had a mind for the politics and education. She was raised in the Vale and often accompanied her parents on their trips to Lord Aryn's court.

Known to study the history of the houses and the stories of the people of Westeros, her mind never truly turns off. She has dreams of expanding her family's - and by extension her own - wealth and power, she believes that Thornclair has more potential than it has yet seized upon. Although she cares for her brother, she has always resented the fact that her potential is stunted by her younger age.

A young beauty, she has had numerous nobles pursue her hand, but as yet her father has not arranged a marriage to any of the suitors. Whether he has a particular hand in mind for her or simply was underwhelmed by those who have pursued her, none yet know.

Emphyria Thornclair

Bio

The first-born daughter of a minor noble family, Emphria was born into the upper class of the Vale of Arryn. As a child, Emphyria received a traditional lady’s education, and spent much of her childhood accompanying her parents on their trips to the Eyrie in an effort to grow their influence at the Arryn’s court. Since childhood, Emphyria developed into a keen intellect with a voracious appetite for knowledge - often spending hours of her day studying matters of economics, history and politics under the tutelage of their Maester.

As a young woman, Emphyria was arranged to marry the heir of House Thornclair, in what was seen as a strategically advantageous match for both of their houses. While she dutifully went along with the match and maintains a cordial relationship with husband, Emphyria feels little love towards the man. Moreover, the recent scandal caused by her husband’s bastard child has put even more of a strain on their relationship.

As an adult, Emphyria has grown to be a shrewd and exceptionally ambitious woman. Beyond her position as the future lady of Castle Thorne, she dreams of expanding her own power and influence, and her no qualms about manipulating the people around her in order to get to the top.

Born as the first child and primary heir of House Thornclair, Daros Thornclair, unlike his sister, had very little inclination toward politics. While he grew up educated and could withhold his own in court well enough, he had always preferred to be out in the field instead of a throne room. As he had grown up and trained, he would either venture out with his father or patrols in order to try and quell the mountain clans, providing practice for his tactics and skills.

After his marriage with Emphyria, while at first was good, would eventually become a reason for him patrolling in the mountains as well. While he keeps a cordial relationship with his wife, he became more distant after the revelation of his bastard child with another woman.

With each time he ventured out and met more of the mountain clans, Daros had developed vitriol toward them. He saw how ferocious they could become and the lengths they were willing to go. What he had seen troubled him and with the friends he lost, he despised them.

As an adult, not only had Daros' skills developed but so did his ambition. He believed their house had untapped potential and was willing to do whatever was necessary to unlock it. As he got older, whispers had begun to swirl around him as the "Cursed Prince of Castle Thorn" and his many treks into the mountains. There were many mysteries in the Mountains of the Vale and there were those that wondered what price he had paid for what gain.

Bio:
Varn was born a product of rape from a Dothraki father and a simple merchant mother. His father kept his mother captive and took an interest in raising him as a Dothraki. Before long, his mother died from illness. From early childhood, Varn began to suffer from dreams where he saw the world through the eyes of various animals. It took years to understand that he was a warg and had the ability to enter the minds of animals and venture the world through them. Once he was a teenager, he went into the mind of a poisonous snake and murdered his father while he slept. He then turned his back on the Dothraki ways by venturing across the sea. He spent a few years doing oddjobs aboard ships and picking up skills as he went. Eventually his travels brought him to the shores of the Vale.

As a bastard, he knew he had no real place in the world, but that fact never bothered him. He was conniving and streetsmart enough to land lucrative jobs as a sellsword or mercenary. He often used his abilities as a warg to spy on his surroundings and always had information he could offer up for cash. His travels allowed him to pick up a wide breadth of knowledge beyond the Vale, and he knew how to survive and adapt in any situation.

Bio:
Skarde was born to an average poor family like many who sought protection under House Thornclair. His father was a blacksmith who created great craftsmanship but struggled to keep a penny. Instead he would rather drink it away and Skarde's mother stayed home to housekeep. Skarde never knew what he wanted in life or what to become of it and frankly didn't care. Growing up he learned 2 things. 1) Stealing is easier than working for it and 2) Being great with a sword is what keeps people away after you steal from them. With this he managed to survive until he was old enough to fight under the Thornclair banner as a soldier.

After years of war for someone else, Skarde finally released himself from the grasp of the Military and earned his freedom. It took the major early years of his life. Now at 28, he saved himself enough money to live off what he can and steal/con his way through life. Those who served in the Military heard of him for his lack of caring on the fields of war. Often putting himself in danger to finish his goals and putting down those who stood in his way...Or simply cheating in a game of cards and taking fellow soldiers money off the field. His taste of adventure only brought by war and what he has seen, for now his road is open and he has no idea on what may lay ahead.
