Vander gave a glance over toward Eldritch, as she commented. It wasn't flirtatious, but man there was something about it that gave him an uneasy vibe. Chills crept over his skin as he talked to her, and for just the briefest moment he wondered if there was actually something to the nickname he had given her.

No, of course that's ridiculous, he quickly reminded himself, but there was no question that she was deep in the Dark Side. She was a sadist, wasn't she? He could sense it. Most Sith were not "kind" and they certainly weren't people that Vander could trust, but there was a deeper layer of those who just enjoyed inflicting pain for the sake of it. And that layer wasn't a small one, either.

He listened in silence as she told her story, and he couldn't help but note something she added on the end. Perhaps it was just in his nature to pick the most contentious point to take, but he liked to make other Sith think. He also liked to keep his own views... obscure.

You were in that situation, weren't you? he countered. He knew that the hard reality was that probably none of those slaves were alive anymore. It was a hard life and rarely ended well for them. His point, however, was that she dismissed them as being worthless for being in the very same situation she had been in. Unless, of course - and unlikely - she thought her life was worthless, which would have been a very surprising take.

Well, that doesn't sound like me at all, he said deadpan as she mentioned him not telling some fabricated story. There were, of course, things that didn't need to be told, but most of it wasn't things that could be easily used against him anymore.

My earliest memories are of the Sith. I was raised as one so it's all I've ever really known, he said. He'd been only an Acolyte during the days when the Order was really floundering, but it wasn't doing that anymore. The Order had made a comeback and was becoming that same, creepingly insidious power that it had been for so long.

Aza couldn’t help but smirk at Vander’s quip, unable to deny its technical truth. It was rare that she met someone with his level of wit so deftly concealed by such an air of forcibly displayed indifference. It was refreshing.

I suppose we are all much closer to slave than king, aren’t we? Still, it didn’t change her perception of the slaves. What that said about Azathoth as a person was debateable, but she was steadfast in her beliefs at least in that regard.

That explains a lot, She said with a sense of joking condescention despite meaning what she said. A childhood molded by the Sith is bound to result in, well, you. She paused for a moment, the smirk from earlier returning as if she had just thought of a funny joke. Or an untimely death, I guess. Glad that you made it through, you are an efficient partner despite your paranoid delusions.

Which is about as close to a genuine compliment as you would get from Azathoth. She wasn’t the typical pessimistic, demeaning Sith by any means, she just wasn’t particularly easy to impress. So many people had disappointed her in so many spectacular ways over the years that sometimes she wondered if there were still competent people out there.

Vander seemed competent - and good with a knife.

Is the Order all you ever wish to know? She asked, unprompted and not entirely sure why.

Her gaze flicked over to Vander for the briefest of moments, wanting to study his face before it returned to the viewport, the whipping lines of hyperspace reflecting oddly off of her blood red eyes.

I guess so, he said. The Sith - even Champions - were much higher up the food chain than most people. They were still far away from ruling the galaxy themselves.

Vander shot her a sideways glance but didn't actually argue. The Sith built people for two purposes: conquest and killing.

It's only paranoid delusions if they're not out to get you, he said. It was the classic paranoid answer, but it was true. Vander lived the game of shadows.

He quirked an eyebrow at her question. That seemed like a dangerous question to be asking.

I don't think any of us really get an option, do we? he asked. Let's face it, most of us will die long before we ever make it to the top, he said. Sith life expectancy wasn't the best, and he was sure Eldritch had already figured that out for herself.
