If the fear tactics involve hurting or killing someone in cold blood just to achieve some fleeting result, it's below me. It's not different, it's below me.

Actually, there have been cases where atrocities have been helpful for the perpetrator. Such as with the Mongols or Timurids, one of them built a tower out of human skulls to "encourage" other settlements to surrender.

I'm not advocating that we do it, especially not when we're trying to be the good guy, but cruel tactics have been useful in some circumstances.

And examples like that are exactly what I mean.

So it's a modern theory then.

Difference being that we live in the civilized western world now, and the year is 2009. We're not Mongolians who committed atrocities, and we're not Romans thinking that we can just go ahead with "Carthaginian peace" or other stuff like that. You can't look to military actions that are thousands of years old to justify modern day atrocities.

Yes I can.

Just because we've changed now and call ourselves "civilised" doesn't mean that we are; it doesn't mean we've found the right way.

Yeah, you can but no one else would.

There is a reason we don't follow ancient methods anymore, or would you like me to rub some moss and cowdung on your chest to help your cough?

They're not ancient methods.

It's just a matter of where you're from and what you believe.

For example, in Russia this is seen as common sense, and countries that don't employ it are seen as pretty backwards.

It's all subjective.

How is that not an ancient method? It is a method that was seen to be effective a ****ing long time ago, just like you preaching that methods used 1000 years ago is effective.

But then you are an Internet warrior.

It's effective now too; or at least would be when tried.

Matt, don't bother. It's over. He's backed into a corner. Otherwise he wouldn't pull out his "it's all subjective" crap.

No, it would not.

Killing thousands of Muslims to strike fear into the hearts of Terrorists would work about as well as Communism.

It's not "crap" it's one of the facts of life.

Nothing that's in the least bit related to an opinion can ever be fact.

No, it would not.

I'm advocating killing terrorists, not Muslims.

Well that's just subjective.

See how annoying that is?

By the way, my point was more that you tend to pull that out when you're already losing arguments.

Well, the fact that it's subjective isn't subjective.

What I'm saying is that "better" is a matter of opinion, as not everyone's ever going to agree with it.

Actually it's not subjective at all. It's against the law. Yes, soldiers, marines, whomever if your in the US military you have what's called ROE (rules of engagement) that you must follow when dealing with an enemy. You disobey these rules, your breaking the law. It would be no different than if you punched a man in the face who was unarmed and handcuffed on the street. You'd still be arrested for it.

As Brandon pointed out however, they're not going to get convicted. Not in a million years.

edit: I'd also like to point out it's not merely american laws. Most modern countries have ROE of their own.

Damn hippies.

Can't even punch terrorists in the face anymore.

Maybe we should give them free handjobs instead.

Neal Puckett, an attorney representing McCabe, told Fox News the SEALs are being charged for allegedly giving the detainee a “punch in the gut.”

Ahmed Hashim Abed, whom the military code-named "Objective Amber," told investigators he was punched by his captors — and he had the bloody lip to prove it.

Funny, last time I was punched in the gut, I didn't get a bloody lip. :D

It's one thing to be a quarterback in the NFL in the middle of the game, quite another to be an armchair quarterback.

And are we that civilized as you believe? Nagasaki, Hiroshima anyone?

You don't need to go back to dung on the chest for that.

Nagasaki and Hiroshima had to be done- it saved American lives. But that's another argument.

And we're arguing over a 'punch in the gut'?

Wow...

So who decides whose lives are worth more and that the trade-off is fair?

Their innocent lives for our service members.
