I couldn't believe it when she COMPLAINS to him about him being gone for five years. Was it his ****ing fault or something? And you just saw all his scars and you have the audacity to imply you had it bad!?
Oh shit. You're on the first season. Yea Thea is an insufferable **** all of Season 1. Tommy also turns in to a massive bag of dicks very suddenly.

I can't wait till you see Ollie shoot someone in the leg as Arrow to stop them from investigating a crime. Then the next episode he tells him "The Arrow probably had a good reason." WHILE THE ARROW IS STILL IN HIS LEG!

The one character I find myself interested in is Diggle, actually. Half-decent actor, but his side-story with Deadshot was one of the more engaging stories of the second season.

The one thing I have to say they do a pretty good job of is inserting DC Easter Eggs throughout the seasons.

Agreed, that and a lot of the fight scenes actually.

The fight choreographers, stuntmen and cameramen have all stated in interviews that they've taken a great deal of influence from the fight scenes in The Raid, there's even a full on nod to it in one of the last episodes of season one. Oliver fights about six or seven dudes in a hallway and there's a shot straight of that film when he smacks a guys head into a light and then twice more into the wall below it.

If they're taking influence from one of the best martial arts movie of the last decade, then I'd say they're on the right track. The Russo brothers took influence from the same movie for The Winter Soldier as well actually. I hope Hollywood continues taking notes, because it's resulted in some really well executed fight scenes across the board.

I've watched seven episodes of this show in two days. I guess I'm liking it. The fight choreography is probably the best aspect, besides Laurel's sweater puppies.

Episode 21, The Undertaking.

It's at the end. Immediately after he knocks said guy Raid-style the camera pans around to show Arrow in a hall full of knocked out/dead baddies, ala Oldboy.

Then you remember that the undertaking is essentially killing poor people with an earthquake machine and it gives you a moment of pause.

Actually disliked the entire episode, but I did like the final scenes. Just wish they had a good body to support them more.

I liked it but the ending was definitely the best. Especially the burial scene (particularly Diggle's part), and Oliver saying he doesn't want to die as the Arrow.

Yeah. The burial, the hq scene, and Merlyn at the end were good.

Particularly the "I don't want to die down here." line. It gives me a lot of hope for the direction of the show with the changes to Star City and hopefully seeing Oliver Queen become more Oliver Queen than Batman.

Is anyone else tired of them using the term "put down" when talking about killing someone? Listen closely to each episode and someone saying "I'm going to put you down" or something along those lines is said. It annoys me how many times they've said it in the show. Like can they not think of another term for killing someone?

Yeah, I know. Forgot to mention the Oldboy nod actually, which is actually a nod to an even better film and one of my personal favourites, Bullet Ballet.

I've touted The Raid films countless times on this forum as some of if not the best fight execution I've seen on film in years. The more people that take influence the better IMO.

Agreed, that was the first time in awhile that a moment of onscreen vulnerability within a superhero felt appropriate and earned. It's a good direction to take.

Looks like Thea is headed towards EvilSpeedy territory and Laurel towards Black Canary, which in a sense is good because it means they'll be more directly involved in the overall story, I just hope the show is clever about it going forward otherwise it could become a cluster****.

I agree. That's one thing I like about this show, which is that Oliver has always had pretty good character development. There's still been some use of the cliche "it’s all my fault" when it’s really not, but the show has almost always given Oliver realistic moments of doubts and vulnerability. They're pretty consistent with their continuity too, so they don't really retread over ground they've already covered.

I said earlier in the series that I thought it was a mistake to make Laurel a series regular so early. Because she wasn’t Black Canary yet, and especially after Sara came in as the first Canary, Laurel didn’t really have a role to serve. She affected the plot more in season 2, but it still wasn’t enough. Now that Sara is dead (since Sara was always a catalyst for Laurel becoming Black Canary), and - SPOILER ALERT - we know that Laurel will be training with Ted Grant, we can finally have forward movement.

Thea will be interesting since she’s a wildcard for me. You’re right in that she’s looking like Evil!Speedy right now, but I would imagine her ultimate character development will be towards being Good!Speedy.

Hopefully they do it - wait for it - justice.

::D:

Another thing I think this show is good at, since it's relevant, is major character deaths. They've always been very impactful and haven't just been something done for shock value. Each death has its purpose, and each one actually lets you feel the emotion of it. Especially Tommy. Ending season 1 on Tommy's death, when so many people assumed he would become Oliver's nemesis (Tommy and Malcolm being like Lex and Lionel, or Harry and Norman), was a pretty ballsy move. You could really feel it with the cliffhanger, and then they did a good job of using that to begin Oliver's transition from killer to hero.

It's for that reason why I actually disagree with what you said earlier, Brent, about how Tommy turns into a douchebag very suddenly. Tommy was the one who had moral clarity, in that he recognized Oliver was a killer. Oliver spent so much time justifying his methods, but Tommy didn't care about the justification. He didn't think that good intentions meant it was OK to kill. So he rightly called Oliver out on his shit. Sure, there was some soap opera drama in there with Laurel, but his anger towards Oliver stemmed from being lied to and learning that his best friend was a killer.

The series ultimately showed that Tommy was right, and that his feelings were not misplaced.

I'm almost halfway through the first season now, and I'm finding this show way more interesting than it should be. Most of the characters are incredibly poorly written, doing things because the plot necessitates and not out of actual motivation. That being said, I really like Oliver, and surprisingly Walter, and of course Felicity Smoakshow.

The first half is a little rough, so if you like it then you should like the rest. I think the turning point for the show is when Oliver meets Slade.

The only thing that bothers me about Felicity is the constant technobabble talk. I understand that she's a computer genius, but a lot of times she does near impossible things on her computer that just move the plot along. I get that there really isn't many other ways for Oliver to get info about crimes, but it annoys me when Felicity explains everything that she's doing, mostly because it sounds very made up.
