DESCRIPTION
The Aurek-class strike starfighter is a light combat spacecraft which was developed and manufactured by the Republic Fleet Systems corporation during the era of the Old Republic. The winning entry in the Republic Navy's "Generation Tomorrow" advanced starfighter competition, it served as the main "hyperspace snub" of the Republic military for a staggering period of some 4,000 years, encompassing various generational revisions and upgrade programs. Its service life was only cut short by the Ruusan Reformations, which forbid the Republic from maintaining a standing military.

The Aurek-class strike starfighter is, in nearly every respect, a fully modern snubfighter, incorporating features, technologies and performance which would not be out of place on the most up-to-date small combat spacecraft circa 135 ABY. What Republic Fleet Systems was able to accomplish over 5,000 years ago stands as a testament to sapient ingenuity, and made the Aurek nearly unbeatable by most of its contemporaries. The ship is a mere 9.2 meters in length, its dagger-shaped profile broken up by a bubble cockpit canopy, as well as a pair of retractable strike foils, which are normally stowed flush along the rear fuselage but which deploy in combat to pop out the ship's twin light laser cannons, as well as improving thermal performance and redistributing mass for optimal maneuverability. Other armament includes a 6-shot concussion missile launcher, giving the little fighter the ability to bomb ground targets and attack enemy capital ships. Top speed is a blistering 115 MGLT, faster than many modern machines, coupled with an integrated class 2 hyperdrive. Reportedly, all of these weaponry and engine technology is extremely well laid out; Republic ground crews of the time praised the Aurek for its ease of maintenance and placid ground handling, in contrast to its willing, even sporty handling when in the sky.

The Aurek is regarded by many as the finest starfighter ever built, a title which was, unfortunately, reflected by its cost. Although funding was justified for large orders by the ongoing war by the Republic against the Sith, a single Aurek was said to cost the equivalent of 1.5 light freighters, or 6 S-100 Stinger-class starfighters, which it replaced in service. During the war years, the type's superiority over almost any foe was considered justification enough for this high cost, however after the Ruusan Reformations, it became the type's downfall.

After the Republic abruptly canceled all of its Aurek-class strike starfighter contracts, Republic Fleet Systems began marketing its product to individual system and sector defense forces. Unfortunately, although nearly all could agree that the Aurek was a more than excellent craft, very few systems save for the very wealthiest could justify the ruinously high cost of buying and maintaining a large force of the craft. After struggling along for a further century, RFS abruptly discontinued the type, shuffling the highly experienced workforce which had run the production lines to other parts of the company. In the process, valuable institutional knowledge was lost, and within 50 years, a corporate study concluded that even if the Republic should order the resumption of Aurek-class strike starfighter production the next day, it would be essentially impossible for the company to actually build any.

In the present day, despite 4,000 years of production, very few Aureks still exist in flyable condition anywhere in the Galaxy. Those that do exist are generally located in museums or in private collections.

LEGALITY
Restricted. Aurek-class strike starfighters are combat-rated spacecraft, and are subject to extra licensing requirements and increased scrutiny by authorities.

INTENT
To bring a vessel from canon into our site's fanon.

RESTRICTIONS
The Aurek-class strike starfighter is a rare, highly sophisticated piece of machinery, and is completely incompatible with all starship upgrade items. Examples should also be considered extremely difficult to get hold of, and would require a decent backstory on how such a thing was accomplished by your character if they have one.
