EQUIPMENT

DESCRIPTION
The Axehead-class assault frigate is a capital ship originally manufactured by Rendili Hyperworks for the Republic Marines, who used it for military landing operations during the Mandalorian Crusades. One of the most feared such craft of its day, the Axehead is considered highly obsolete in the present, but can still be found in service to various backrocket sectors and systems.

The Axehead is an offshoot of Rendili Hyperworks' own Hammerhead design family, with the bow of the vessel laid out horizontally rather than vertically. The resulting profile allowed for the installation of broad troop deployment ramps on the ventral surface, as well as launch decks for light repulsorcraft on the dorsal surface, typically swoops or speeder bikes; Axeheads were known for carrying elite Republic air cavalry units into combat. Axeheads were known for being able to clear their own drop zones, as well; vast arrays of anti-personnel blaster cannons allowed them to sweep a potential landing site of enemy troops and light vehicles.

In addition to the 350 troops the Axehead can carry into battle, the frigate is crewed by 850 personnel. There is also space for up to 2,000 tons of cargo and consumables for up to 4 months in space. Armament, in addition to anti-personnel blasters, consist of 8 quad laser turrets, 2 concussion missile launchers, and an array of heavy, medium and light turbolaser cannons on the tips of the "hammerhead" section. These allow the ship to fend of starfighters and enemy capital ships during a dash toward a planetary atmosphere.

In general, the mass orbital drop operations for which the Axehead was designed no longer take place, with dedicated landing craft taking the place of hybrid frigate/landing craft in the event that they do. In the present day, most Axeheads which have avoided the scrapper's torch languish in mothball fleets, or have been converted to serve other roles. Still, as the Galaxy once again steps onto the path to war, many Axeheads are being hastily returned to service...
