Vand thought about everything that Leon was saying and tried to organize it into a logical answer. The other Padawan didn’t stop talking to the point of the half-Nagai starting to think that he talked in this short period of time more than the pale boy ever did since their had arrived on this planet.

Perhaps they tried to frame us because their assassination attempt failed.” he said, after Leon finally stopped. The gears of his mind were turning with possibilities. “These sirens are probably because of us. If we are caught, without any doubt we are going to be forbidden from being able to help.

If it’s the case, I think that those responsible for the attempt against our life also denounced us. They are still around the place.” he tried to hide his concern for their safety. With the enemy so close, more attacks could come at any moment. “In a stretch of this theory, I would say that blaming us would not only affect the Jedi, but also Sulfur. He was the one that called us here.”

While Leon sent a message to Ordeen, the pale Padawan remained in silence thinking of other possibilities to explain their situation. However, nothing else came to his mind. “I agree. I believe that the cortosis is at the center of everything that is happening here.” he wondered if the Knight would help them.

Leon wasn’t entirely sure he agreed with Vand’s theory. The Kon’me were already suspicious. In their situation, the attack on them would have been easy enough to misinterpret by the average bystanders. Two outsiders appear from the wreckage of an attack and then flee the scene. He scratched his head and closed his eyes meditating on the force. Maybe it could reveal something they’d missed.

His eyes opened. He could feel the urgency in his chest, the force was calling to him. “C’mon, I think I’m picking up on something.

⌬⌬⌬

Terek Ordeen’s eyes snapped open. His head hurt and he could feel something sticky and warm in his eye. He tried to blink it away, but it persisted, he went to move his hand to wipe it, but found he couldn’t move it. He looked over and noticed his hand was restrained. He looked to the other side… Same thing. He realized he was strapped to something, a bed maybe. He tried to sit up but his arms, legs, and chest were cinched tight.

Fear washed over him like being submerged in ice water. He calmed himself relying on the force to show him the way. He couldn’t remember what had happened, he was with the Chief of Security there was a loud crash and then everything went back. Had there been an attack? The Padawans! Where they alright?! He took a deep breath and relied on his training. He needed to process this situation logically not emotionally. Then the light came on.

The hum of a dying bulb filled the room was a droning buzz. There was apparently a door behind him because he heard it hiss open. Two new sounds entered the sounds of footsteps and the warbling buzz of an interrogation droid.

⌬⌬⌬

Leon was crouched down peering over the top of a storage facilities parapet at a mine opening that was nearly uninhabited. He pulled out his macro-binoculars and took a closer look. From what he could tell the only beings in the area were a pair of Kon’me talking just to the left of the entrance. They weren’t dressed in guard uniforms, so it was clear they weren’t working.

Alright, as soon as these two leave we can make a run for it. Once we’re inside we’ll need to be on high alert,” he took a deep breath as the pair of Kon’me started to walk away, “Let’s do this.

When Leon closed his eyes, Vand stayed in silence. He could feel that the other was searching for the Force and didn’t want to disturb him. Due to his logical mind, the half-Nagai only occasionally used the Force to solve his problems. However, desperate moments required the help of the greatest ally of the Jedi.

He closed his eyes and searched for answers in the Force. While nothing concrete came, the half-Nagai was able to feel something. It was only impressions of dark feelings, coming from far away. He wasn’t sure what this meant, but it wasn’t something good.

This moment of meditation came to an end when Leon said that he had picked something and they should go. Vand nodded and followed the older Padawan toward the mines. During the entire time that they walked toward it, Ordeen didn’t send any message. While he seemed to be an experienced Knight, the pale boy couldn’t avoid feeling concerned.

Due to two Kon’me guarding the entrance of the mine, the two Padawans were forced to hide in the top of a nearby facility. “We also need to be careful when we get inside. There could be more of them here.” he said, before putting a candy on his mouth. The pale boy needed sugar, because there was sometime since he had it.

Once the Kon’me walked away, Vand would follow Leon toward the entrance of the mine. Hopefully the answers that they needed would be inside it.

Leon kept low and stuck to cover as he slipped into the mine. Cautiously, he reached out with the force feeling for something, anything, that didn’t belong. Throughout the spiderwebbing passages that began to present themselves, he felt the overwhelming oppression of the class discrepancy in full force. All throughout the mine negative emotions rose to the top. It was like opening a vault and finding it filled with powdered kegs each with it’s wick lit.

Oh man, this is heavy,” he said in a hushed tone.

Then at the edge of his mental periphery, he could feel something strange. Something close to anger, but not as intense. Instinctively he began to head in it’s direction. It felt like he was sifting through the sand to find a gemstone. A pair of voices up a head startled him and he quickly slipped into an open corridor, spotted a mining cart, and hopped in, doing his best to stay out of sight. If they were spotted now it would ruin their chance at clearing their names.

Then, to Leon’s horror, the mining cart began to move. He was trapped, the Kon’me coming down the main hallway would see him if he got up, but he had no idea where this was about to take him when the cart tipped hurting down a steep incline and into the heart of the mine.

Rather than using the Force like Leon did, Vand had decided to use his sight and logic. The place seemed to be like any other, or at least like the ones that he read about in his holobooks. There were lights that illuminated the entrance and went down the mine. While he wasn’t a species with extraordinary hearing, the half-Nagai could hear in the distance the sound of machines, probably the ones used to extract the cortosis.

Leon’s comment made the half-Nagai turn to look at the older Padawan. “What’s heavy?” he asked, frowning without understanding what the other meant with it. He wasn’t carrying anything, even less something that could be considered heavy.

Before he could receive an answer, the sound of voices alerted the two Padawans. Vand followed Leon to a nearby corridor, but rather than hiding inside the cart, the half-Nagai had found a safe place behind a pile of crates. He didn’t trust the type of hiding place that the older boy had chosen. It could move at any moment.

It wasn’t no surprise when the cart started to move and Leon went down the mine. The sound of it moving alerted the owners of the voices that they heard, a pair of Kon’me. Seeing the cart in movement, the two workers went running after it.

In his hiding place, Vand facepalm. Now he would need to go after Leon while avoiding the Kon’me. While he carefully entered the mine, the half-Nagai thought that the older Padawan would end up becoming another of these inconsequential Knights.

The cart dropped and Leon felt his stomach lurch into his throat. The sound of metal scraping metal rang out in his ears as he clung to the sides of the cart. The mine whipped past him with increasing speed, he had no idea where or how deep he was and at the moment he didn’t have the time to worry.

After a sharp dip the cart began to slow and Leon’s heart hammered in his ears while he struggled to control his breathing. Unbeknownst to the Padawan the cart was simply stalling as it prepared to make a final plunge into the heart of the mine. Just as he got his life together and was preparing to hop the side of the cart, he heard a click, and was promptly thrown into the back of the cart as it made it’s final drop.

The cart leveled out and Baudelaire’s terrified eyes peeked over the edge of the cart just in time to see a barrier with flashing yellow lights and what he assumed was a warning written in Bal'Demnic native language. None of that mattered because Leon was too panicked to spot the hand brake on the outside of the cart.

BOOOOOM!

The collision reverberated off the mine walls making it impossible to perceive any sound as his body flew through the air. Which was plausible deniability for the feminine screech he was letting out. At the last second his training snapped on, and he shielded himself with the force, but it was too little too late. The force absorbed the main impact, sparring him from an untimely death, but there wasn’t much it could do for the rest of them.

His body bounced off the ground once, sharp rocks ripping and tearing, twice, his head bounced off a stone, rending his senses from his consciousness and replacing them with a high pitched whistle and dragging visual images as he tumbled end over end until finally coming to a stop.

Leon was facedown in the dirt. His vision swam as lights danced before his eyes and then his verdant pupils rolled back and he passed out.

With a lollipop on his mouth, Vand followed the path that went down the mine. Since there was a pair of Kon’me following the cart, the half-Nagai was being careful to not attract their attention. He would maintain a distance between them and move using some crates as cover. Hopefully it would work.

He had been calmly using this stealth strategy when he heard a loud crash in the distance. It probably had alerted all the Kon’me that were inside this mine. Since it was going to cause more trouble to him, without any doubt Leon was behind it. If it wasn’t for the sweet in his mouth, the pale boy would have sighed loudly. Working with some older Jedi could be so frustrating!

The pale boy carefully followed the sound, arriving right in time to see a crowd of Kon’me surrounding the cart. Hiding behind a stone wall, he was able to see Leon’s body collapsed in the ground. Vand was so lucky, his partner had fainted! He refused to carry him on his back.

Then, a male Kon’me approached the fainted Padawan. “Boy! Are you fine?” he said, while slapping Leon’s face. “Shit! He’ll need some medical help.” he said, before turning to look at his colleagues. “Do you think that he is dead? The boss said that we should take them alive because he wanted to explain the things.”

From his hiding place, Vand frowned in confusion. What did they want to explain? “Hey! Stop right here!” a voice called from behind him. The half-Nagai turned right on time to see that Kon'me had sneaked behind him and was pointing a blaster. Before he could do something, the pale boy was hit by a stun shot and everything went black.

Later, he would blame it on Leon being clumsy!

Leon’s eyes eased open and the dim light stung his throbbing head. He was tied up, great… that was the last time he just willy nilly jumped into a mining cart. He wondered where Vand was when he turned over and the boy’s pale face was right next to him!

AHH!” Leon yelped, wiggling backward, fearing the worst, when he saw Vand’s chest rise then fall. Baudelaire breathed a sigh of relief. The other guy was so pale, Leon had thought he was dead…

I see you’re awake…” said a familiar voice.

Leon whipped around half rolling, but totally looking like a fish out of water as he worked to get the origin of the voice in view. Finally, out of breath, Leon looked up at the chief of security, Giles Te’roc. The Kon’me wore a wolfish grin, but that very well could have been because of his reptilian features, so Leon did his best not to judge.

Where’s Ordeen?” Leon asked, eyes hardening as he began to pull the force into him. He ay have been restraining, but ropes were nothing to the power of the force, it would take a little time, but he could break them, he knew it.

He’s—
I’m here Baudelaire, stand down, we’re okay,” Terek’s voice washed over Leon and he released his draw on the force. Ordeen was kneeling down and untying his binds now, “We tied you up because you have a tendency to escape,” said the Corellian with a teasing smirk.

Terek stepped over to Vand and undid his binds as well. “Hastakor, you good? Do you need a sucker or anything?

Leon was a little confused why he’d not been offered one, then remembered Vand had given him one and decided now was a good time to indulge. Sucker in mouth, Leon stood with his arms crossed over his chest as Giles explained what was really happening within BelCort.

Do you have definitive proof that Beyas is a Crezka agent?” asked Leon.
We do, as chief of security for Beyas I’ve compiled plenty of evidence to back up my claims. Don’t believe me?
Leon shrugged, “I took a pretty hard blow to the head, mind humoring me?
The Kon’me laughed, “No problem.

Giles produced a holo and pressed play. An image of Beyas Sulfur flickered into life. The bauld human carried out a conversation condemning the Kon’me people for existing and explicitly naming himself and Agent of Czerka before signing off.

Well, this is a little awkward, huh?” said Leon who was still a little stunned by what he’d seen. “So, I guess it’s back to Beyas?” he asked giving Vand a “Can you believe this shit?” look.

Vand woke up with Leon’s scream. He blinked, feeling a bit dizzy and confused. The half-Nagai remembered that he was following the cart where the older Padawan was hiding, but he was stunned. Looking around, the pale boy saw that he was surrounded by Kon’me and his hands were bound. The other boy next to him was also immobilized.

Wonderful! They had been captured!

The half-Nagai was already prepared to say something to their captors when he noticed that Ordeen was also there. However, unlike the two Padawans he was free and even seemed to be friendly with the Kon’me, to the point of asking them to release the two boys. Vand frowned, he didn’t understand what was happening here.

I’m fine. I have some candies in my pocket.” he answered the Knight’s question. Since he had no idea of how long he had been down, Vand decided to eat one of his sweets. The Padawan should be careful, for the case of his sugar levels being low.

After they were released, the chief of security, Giles Te’roc, explained that Beyas was working for Czerka. Vand wasn’t surprised, he didn’t trust that man since they had talked with him early. However, he would also like to give a look at the evidence. They should have evidence to support this accusation.

It seems like that.” he said to Leon, while still looking at the holo that Giles’ showed them. “I never trusted that guy. What are we going to do now?” the half-Nagai asked Ordeen. As the leader of this mission, he should have a plan.

Ordeen’s arms were crossed over his chest. His left hand cupped his chin and his brow furrowed in concentration. “I feel as though our path is clear. We confront Beyas Sulfur.

Leon was surprised Terek wanted to do this. If Sulfur had any idea they were coming this was going to be messy. He glanced at Vand. He wondered if the other guy had ever been in a real fight before. It didn’t matter. They couldn’t let Czerka get their hands on any more of the planet’s resources.

Well Chief,” said Leon to Giles, “What’s our best way in?

Giles took a moment to consider, he pulled out a personav and showed them an entry point on the lower back side of the massive building. “It’s a trash shoot.” Leon’s shoulders sagged, of course it was. “I’m sure it’s not ideal, but it will bring you to the kitchen. From there, you can use this,” Giles pulled a fob from his belt and handed it to Ordeen, “To access Sulfur’s office.

Terek nodded his head in appreciation, “It seems as though the force has provided, Padawan’s lets go.

⌬⌬⌬

The trash shoot was disgusting. Feted food stuff clung to the slick walls making the climb not only really hard, but also super smelly. By the time they made it to the top of the shoot, Baudelaire wanted to hurl. Leon clambered through the opening and into the kitchen. He found the nearest sink and washed his arms up to the elbow.

Terek chuckled but followed suit washing his hands as well. A minute later the three of them were in the elevator and heading toward their final destination. The tension of the incoming conflict was stifling. Leon glanced at the knight and was shocked to see how calm he was. He simply stood in the corner leaning against the wall with his arms crossed.

The lift slowed and the door opened. Terek took point and Leon followed.

They entered the office and from their new entry had a view of Sulfur’s desk. The Human was standing with his hands clasped in front of him and a wide smile on his face, However; the expression didn’t reach his eyes.

Back so soon?” he said in a voice sweet as syrup.

Vand nodded in agreement. Since the source of the problem had been identified, they should go solve it. “Do we have a plan? Or are we going to invade Sulfur’s office through the front door?” it would be stupid if they tried to do that. Without any doubt the businessman would be prepared for their arrival.

In the end Giles revealed that they could enter the building through a trash shoot. While it was a good strategy, Vand couldn’t avoid feeling uncomfortable with the fact that they were going to crawl through a space where piles of garbage were thrown. He would need a good bath after that.

Following Giles’ information, the three Jedi were able to reach the building’s kitchen without being noticed. Much to Vand’s dismay, the trash shoot was full of pieces of food. It looked and smelled terribly. Once they got out of it, the half-Nagai had rushed to a sink, hoping to wash his hands and arms. He wanted a bath, but it would need to wait.

Leon had the same idea, because he also went to wash himself. Meanwhile, Ordeen chuckled at their panicked reaction. At least he had the decency of also washing his hands. Vans could list how many diseases they could have by crawling on the trash.

Once they were clean enough, the three Jedi walked toward Sulfur’s office. Vand noticed that their path toward it was empty, there weren't even guards. “Something isn’t right.” the half-Nagai whispered to Leon when they entered the elevator. “We need to be careful.

When they reached Sulfur’s office, the businessman was seated on his desk. It was obvious that he had been waiting for them. His smile changed to something diabolic and with a snap of his fingers the walls around the room opened, revealing seven B2-Series Battle Droids and four Droidekas. Vand was right, it was a trap.

Fire,” said Sulfur in a voice as sweet as honey. The multitude of battle droids lifted their weapons and did as they were told. The void between the Jedi and the machine’s lit up in reds and blues as the droids fired on the Jedi. Both of Leon’s lightsabers snapped to his hands, igniting as they touched his palms, but to his surprise, Ordeen was taking the brunt of the attack.

Terek’s purple double-bladed lightsaber created what looked like a barrier in front of him reflecting bolts back in rapid succession, “Get to cover!” he barked over the deafening assault. Leon moved trying to cover himself and Vand as much as he could. Leon slid behind an art display case. From his vantage point he could see Sulfur strolling away without a care in the word. From cover, Baudelaire clipped Alton’s lightsaber to his belt, and pulled his heavy blaster. He took aim and fired three times. A trio of deep blue bolts fired off. Two slammed into the chest of the nearest B-2 and it turned to slag. The last shot slammed into the energy shield of a droideka.

Terek attacked like a man possessed. Leon had never seen ferocity like this. Each strike held a level of aggression that scared the Padawan a bit, but he didn’t exactly have time to worry about the Corellian Knight right now. The knight was holding the droidekas at bay, but there was no telling how long he’d be able to hold out.

Leon and Vand needed to clear the B-2’s so they could help Ordeen. Then he got an idea. Leon drew the force into his palm and then fired it off at the nearest battle droid. The burst of force power sent the droid teetering into another which shot the droid furthest away. The other two droids turned and started firing at Leon. The Padawan yelped ducking back behind cover. Hopefully, Vand would capitalize on the opening.

Vand had only some seconds to activate his lightsaber and get ready to block the shots of the droids. Thankfully, Ordeen was faster than the two Padawans. With his double-bladed lightsaber, the Knight was able to block most of the attacks and ordered them to get some cover.

Rather than leaving Leon to do all the cover alone, Vand used his own lightsaber to block the bolts while they moved to a safe place. He would stay back to back with the older Padawan, deflecting attacks that the other boy could see, while hoping that he would do the same for him.

The half-Nagai would be able to send some of the bolts back to the droids, hitting at least two of the B2 and a droideka, which had no effect due to its shield. Unfortunately, most of what he deflected ended colliding against the walls and some pieces of art that were spread around the room.

While Leon went behind an art display case, Vand had chosen to hide behind a large couch. Crouching behind it, the half-Nagai would continue to defend himself. He tried to redirect back most of the shots that were fired at him, but some still ended up going in not planned directions.

Including the art display case where the other boy was hiding. The glass would shatter, but Leon would remain intact. The half-Nagai would duck back behind it, hoping that his fellow Padawan would think that it had been a droid. The pale boy really needed classes with lightsabers.

When he rose to give it a look, the Padawan saw that two droids were now firing at Leon. With their backs turned to him, Vand saw this situation as an opportunity. Using the Force to enhance his speed, he ran toward the B2 and with two fast movements of his lightsaber he cut the two down.

Three of the B2-untis were down, but four remain. A shower of sparks erupted from one of the droidekas as Ordeen finally broke through one’s shield. Leon reached out to the force and pulled a B-2 unit toward him, while sliding to the side and letting his ignited lightsaber dismember the droid. Blaster fire barked at him from his left side, but his blade was already moving to intercept. The first shot was sent back wide, but the second and third were driven home.

A droidekas started to break from it’s assault on the knight only to be lifted into the air and then slammed down on another. The shields may have protected them from lightsabers and blaster bolts, but nothing could stop good ole’ blunt force trauma. Leon imbued his body with the force and sliced through another B-2 droid. There was one B-2 and one Droidekas left. The B-2 was firing at Vand, but the other guy had proven to be capable of taking these things out, so Leon turned his attention to the more dangerous of the two.

The droideka was focused on Terek’s onslaught. There was nothing it could do while Ordeen wailed on it’s shell of an energy shield. Leon rushed up behind it and stabbed it’s back. The blow glanced off, but being hit from both sides overtaxed the battle droid's shield generator. The bubble popped and Ordeen obliterated the droid.

Leon breathed a sigh of relief as they seemed to have come out unscathed, but it irked him that Beyas had escaped.

The Padawan deactivated his lightsaber, “Are we going after him?
Ordeen glared at the direction Sulfur had fled, “Not yet.
Leon frowned, “Why?
Because this is a matter of planetary security, and because the council must be alerted,” replied Terek sharply. Leon flinched back, “Alright, sorry…
Ordeen sighed, his features softening, “Sorry for snapping, I’m disappointed we lost him too.

Leon stepped to the huge glass windows that overlooked the ocean.

C’mon Padawans, the sooner we make the report the sooner we can give chase,” said Ordeen making his way toward the elevator, “Hey, on the bright side we don’t have to slide down the garbage shoot.

To Be Continued...
