THEME
dice thread

Rain smattered the windshield of the airspeeder. Kai sat behind the wheel and tapped his hand idly while the two criminals flew down to the lower levels. Even in the sub-surface lanes had traffic. They had recently stolen the air speeder but it felt like evening the deeper he took them.

The Grysk tapped his finger on the wheel in the traffic before it started to lessen. While the two did not have to travel far in the air speeder it was not as fast as he liked. Nearly half an hour had passed and nothing had happened other than music and any idle chatter the two of them made.

"So do you have like...anesthetics or sedatives?" Kai seemed to ask out of nowhere as they drew closer to their destination. He was still wearing the same flannel shirt and beanie as before. While the vehicle drove through the seedy area of Cala Town he unholster the DC-17 blaster pistol and switched it to stun before putting it back. The covert legionnaire did not want to accidentally waste the guy he wanted to get information from.

To answer, she pulled down her sleeve. A small device attached like a gauntlet around her forearm; it glinted in the low light, but anyone that had spent time around enough bounty hunters knew it.

A dart launcher.

"
If that doesn't count..." she spoke coolly, gesturing to her bag, "I have nerve blockers and some sedatives. Anesthetics, though... those take more cred to get than I can afford right now. I have one dose." She sighed, slumping back against her seat. "Unfortunately." There was an inkling of what he had planned... but there was a reason she had a stun blaster.

Unruly patients could be such a pain. And she'd hate to have to waste sedative darts... but if this was the way to get what she needed, she'd use anything within her arsenal to get her work done. Unfortunately, death was a very common aftereffect for especially unruly patients... especially those that were unwilling and uncooperative in the first place. And usually by a fault that wasn't hers, of course.

Kai looked over and saw the weapon attached to the Doctor. "hhmmmm" He brought a skeletal hand up to his chin and stroked the non-existent beard as he contemplated possibilities. "You gonna charge me for each dosage you use?" He joked in a way that would make it seem like money was the deciding factor.

The air speeder continued the ride for awhile. The pitter pattering of water on the clear windshield occasionally were wiped away and replaced. They arrived at a bar but the covert Legionnaire drove past the establishment intentionally. He looked inside hoping that the plain closed thugs that sat under the awning were not overly paranoid.

It was fairly seedy and run down but it did not look to be lacking in people. Two shady looking characters stood outside under the sign that said 'Stoggie's Roll' with cartoonish chance cubes beside it. There was a chance the building had a camera so for now the two remained seated in the parked car half a block away.

Looking towards Ilana, Kai decided to break down what was needed. "Two tough boys up front." The people inside, patrons or otherwise, were probably not pushovers either. Kai had his DC-17 blaster pistol in his lap. His eyes looked at its worn frame for a moment trying to decide if he should leave it in the airspeeder.

"The guy with the info we need is in there. He tends to build up gambling debts and uses aliases to place them. We..." He sighed and stuffed the blaster into his waist band so it was not too difficult to find. He knew they were going to search him though he felt like it would be more suspicious if he did not have a weapon. "...are going to take him. So the question is, Doctor Morata, if you want to join me in bringing him out." He was not going to say she had to join him in the gambling den. He had hired her for her medical expertise only after he had taken the target. It was her choice if she wanted to risk her well being going inside. Plus if she stayed in the speeder she could be the designated getaway driver if things got harry.

She tilted her head to gaze at the lunkheads guarding their mark... and inwardly felt a twinge of irritation. It was never going to be easy, was it?

But a job was a job... and she had a feeling that if she were patted down, they'd find a lot more on her person than they'd have bargained for, dart launcher aside.

...Perhaps it was wise to stay within the vehicle... but if he needed support, she would come in guns blazing. Obviously not what they needed, if being under the radar was the idea.
"Will you need my help in bringing him out peaceably?" she inquired, resting a hand on her own stun blaster.

If he did, then she would join him without another word. If not... well, here she was anyways, prepared to offer her services. The Hippocratic Oath didn't apply... yet.

Kai looked at the arkanian hybrid for a moment blankly then towards the establishment and then back at her. "I mean...I think I have a plan for doing it solo but I'm open to ideas." He knew he was not the smartest, definitely not the best looking, probably not the luckiest, but he did know what he was capable of and in that he had confidence. But I don't like to sin alone.

He tapped a finger on the wheel but then came to an answer. "If you can keep up...you're always welcome." He gave a wink and got out of the air speeder. They would begin walking towards the building but Kai would turn down the alley that bordered one wall of the establishment. The wall was covered with a faded advertisement that probably had been visible from the street a century ago but now had been weathered and never maintained since.

The pair came around to the back of the building where a lone guard stood. Plain clothes with a jacket that when shifted, revealed an underarm holster containing the black grip of a pistol. The door man saw them immediatly but only held up a hand when they got close. A questioning look on his face tentacled Quarren face.

<"I think there's a game inside I-"> He started to say in Huttese. But the Quarren just shook his head. <"No there ain't"> The Grysk did not say anything for a moment. That was rude Kai cracked his neck.

<"Look, I know that-"> Again he would get cut off. <"Get lost freak. Your accent is terrible."> It was said with more aggression, almost threatening. On top of that he insulted Kai's Nar Shaddaa accent. He had grown up off world but spent a lot of time on the planet. He actually had a bit of pride in how much he sounded like a local. But this simple bouncer did not seem to think it was all that great. I bet opening up his throat would open up that door. Kai's hands balled into fists in frustration at being immediatly dismissed by the Quarren. He was not sure why he was feeling so angry. Force dammit, Tanarra! Get out of my head!

Kai started to walk towards the door. His stance confident and strong. <"I'm going in there and-"> The next thing that came out of his mouth was a gasp as the bouncer's fist buried itself in his stomach. Spittle flew from Kai and probably hit the door man's nice jacket. The dark sider stumbled back and dropped to a knew. A rasping breath came while his hands clutched where he had been hit. Regaining his breath he looked up in time to see the foot of the bouncer just kick him in the face making him fall back onto the ground.

<"I'm this district's shock boxing champion koochoo. The only thing you're gambling with tonight is your own life so you best take your lady and head on home."> The bouncer spit to the side and took a step back to return to his place near the door. "Yeah..." The Grysk groaned and tried to blink the light spots from his eyes. "I...I could use a little bit of help right now." Blood was running from the kick he had received. He could taste copper in his mouth. Kark did I bite my tongue? Did I lose any teeth?

For the first time in ages... Ilana showed an emotion.

Irritation.

As Kai doubled over from the Quarren's assault, she set down her bag, calmly stepped around...

And slammed her fists into the side of the Quarren's face in a side-sweep, watching with wry satisfaction as the guard stumbled with a wet grunt to his knees. Her eyes were a cold, flat amber, as she knelt down to his level, stare cold and intense as she gazed down, grasping her bag once more.

<"You will let us in. And if you call for help, I will use your guts as décor. Now let us in, and shoo.">

He glared openly at her... and she glared right back, daring him to make a move.

Finally, the door opened for them, and she calmly pulled a square of finely-woven synthweave from her pocket, wiping off her bloody knuckles, then replacing it into her pocket.
<"One last thing.">

She turned around to glare at him, her stony expression one of sheer hatred. <"Watch who you call freak.">

Kai coughed and slowly rose from the wet asphalt. He had not seen Ilana hit the Quarren but he witnessed the after affects. Hawking up a glob of blood he spat it to the side. <"Oh it's been a minute since I was humbled."> A chuckle came but then abruptly stopped since it hurt to laugh.

The Grysk followed the medical professional into the building without giving the beat door man a second glance. "I think I'm liking you more each time we hang out, Doc." He said close enough so that only she would hear. It was not difficult since Mon Cala music boomed from the main area.

The pair were not headed to the front though. There was a stairway next to the back door on the inside that led to the basement. It was there that the private gambling took place. It was not a big establishment and subsequently Kai doubted there would be a large room beneath but that also meant they would be close to plenty of rough and tumble individuals.

"Worb grub noh blra!" Someone exclaimed in some language Kai did not understand as they descended into view of two tables. There was three people at one table and only two at the other. A small bar was there for the simple purpose of not requiring people to go back upstairs for beverages. A nautolan, the one that seemed to have lost, stormed past Kai and Ilana up the stairs.

"Better luck next time" Came words in Basic from a yellow skinned karkarodon with a smile on his toothy face. The shark like being looked at the beaten face of the new arrival and his fair skinned partner with an expression that changed to casual suspicion.

Wiping his sleeve across his face and grunting to force down any residual pain, Kai walked over to the table with his target. "Hay hey hai! What's goin on here? I've played pazzak and sabbac before but never just dice." He pulled out some credits and immediatly got a friendly look from the karkarodon. "Well step right up I'm more than happy to show you how to play as long as you bet some of that coin." To the predatory man the Grysk seemed like an easy mark. Good, that was just what he wanted. Nobody in the basement, except maybe Ilana, knew the truth.

There were witnesses and they were close. "I'm Bruss. Hey, can we get a drink for...." He looked towards the bar. "Just call me Cerbo. Thanks." Kai's face showed a smile, ignoring the fact that just a few seconds ago he had been laid out by a man with twenty pounds on him. Bruss looked towards Ilana. "A drink for Cerbo and his friend..." He left it open for the woman to fill in her name. Kai also looked towards the woman. But more so because he was thinking about how she took care of the door man. He would have to come back to that when it did not hurt so much to laugh.

"Anna."

She offered her most engaging smile; to most it would seem like she was typically this engaging, her fist curled beneath her chin as her eyes glimmered with analytical coldness. In truth, she was assessing their mark, and reviewing his physiology. The dart could still possibly work, but his physiology was more aquarian, and as such the dosage would only make him sluggish, rather than unconscious.

A shame.

She had never dissected one of his kind before; it seemed he was a clever shark boy. She looked forward to seeing how many of his bones were cartilaginous, and how many were real bones to be so ambulatory. So the stun blaster it would have to be... eventually.

But then... something happened. As per usual.

The headache from before lanced through her left temple; a sudden spike of rage from somewhere within the building, causing her to flinch and hiss in pain. She knew eyes were on her... but it hurt enough to almost make her eyes water, giving them both a weak smile.

"Pardon... headache. Took one too many drinks last night with this bad boy."
She waved at Kai with a weak smile. If she would have had the capability to blush, she would have... but the pain was suddenly almost overwhelming.

A drink could help... but dammit, she wanted a good nerve block right about now. Another small crack of genuine emotion almost flared to life at all the eyes; she hated being stared at.

She couldn't stay here for long, or else she really would have to stab at something.

Kai's pleasant expression changed as he felt a change in the air. He heard Ilana's subtle hints at her pain and turned to see her wincing. If she was experiencing a headache and not something else, then it must feel like a migrane. Turning back to Bruss he gave an apologetic look. "Excuse me a sec."

Without waiting for approval he held out an arm to his side and guided the arkanian off to one side. Unslinging his backpack he made sure that nobody had a direct line of sight on the contents. But it was not exactly discrete that he was getting out drugs. Pulling out a nerve blocker he offered it to Ilana.

Before he let her take it spoke in a low whisper. "You able to work with this?" He was asking if she was going to be hindered rather than helped if she used the nerve blocker. Kai was not going to stop her or even judge her for drug use while working. He did it all the time after all. His head turned to the bartender so as to somewhat distract from having a spotlight on the doctor. "Can I get...two of....I dunno, brandy, or whiskey. Hey Bruss you want one?" He did not even wait to hear if the Karkarodon drank the same thing. "Yeah make it three please."

The click and the relief almost made her sag. Numbness, blessed numbness cleared her head and sharpened her awareness once more, and she glanced at Kai. "...Too many people here," she whispered throatily, and for a split second, there was anger that fleeted in her eyes. Not directed at him, but at their crowd. And then she smoothed it over, and tugged on her jacket.

"Let's go, Cerbo," her mask of pleasant sweetness, and a touch of flirtation, came to the fore; and she made sure he had zipped up his bag once more, and sauntered back to where their mark still sat. The glass was set at her elbow at the table, and she offered him a coy smile. "Tell me then, big boy. How high stakes we playin' here?" Her fist curled beneath her chin, head tilted slightly as she eyed the arrangement.

People had called her pretty, even beautiful. Perhaps she could work it to their advantage, make the shark boy ease up a little bit and make it easier to separate from the rest of this gambling den.

She took it and he watched, but mostly felt the change in her feelings. It was like watching a hot iron rapidly cool to a calm and stable norm. When she mentioned the number of people Kai had the urge to look over his shoulder. He was not normally bothered by this many people so he was a little confused.

When the doctor used his false name it was her indication she was back in the game. Zipping up the bag and putting it back over his shoulders the two returned to the gambling table.

"Entry is a hundred creds. Unless you've got something else to bet." His toothy shark grin widdened. "I still don't know how to play." Kai interjected. The Karkarodon glanced away from Ilana, remembering the Grysk was there. "Well with dice it's pretty simple." He pointed towards the sets of cups not meant for drinking. They were black and showed no light through them and were made of some sturdy but cheap plasteel. "Bet first. Then you roll two die in a cup, shake, slam down. You make your second bet and then reveal what you got. Highest rolls wins. Split the pot if you tie."

"a hundred...oh boy that sounds like it might get steep...at least by the time the fun begins." He took a sip of his drink and set it down on the playing table. "Ah screw it. Live a little...amiright?" He let out a jovial laugh like he had heard so many junkies and addicts do when convincing themselves to get something they didn't need. Placing the credits on the table they were left there for the time being.

Taking the set of dice he plopped them into the open cup but did not shake just yet. Bruss also took a cup and so would Ilana if she wanted along with one other gambler who had yet to speak to either of them that looked to be an older Mon Calamari. Bruss bet first putting down one hundred credits. The Calamari called the bet. Kai would raise another hundred. The Karkarodon smiled again thinking the Grysk to be foolish. But the dark sider was confident he could roll the die how he wanted. The Mon Calamari shook his head and stepped away from the table to go to the small bar in the basement.

Those that remained shook and then slamming down the cup upside down. "Second round of betting." Kai's target reminded them. Kai bet another two hundred credits. Bruss called him on it just like before. As Kai revealed his die he saw that he did not have the desired result. A one and a two, sitting on the pockmarked table staring up at him. "Damn. So much for beginner's luck." Kai was now out five hundred credits in the blink of an eye. Stick to the games you know. "Maybe I should stick to the games I know." He said followed by a shrug like it was no big loss. But in truth he was using his own money and a year ago he would have acted a bit differently.

She didn't even bat an eyelash; she grinned coyly at Bruss, arching a white brow. "Very smooth," she chuckled, showing a flash of pearly white teeth. Inwardly, she was flinching at such a display. She hated users like this, but... it seemed that Kai needed an extra hand to get some credits back, if his luck wasn't fortunate enough.

Luckily for him, she was a fast learner, and an avid student. Shark Boy had a tell.

As the two of them settled their bet and Bruss won, she laid her own credit chip on the table.
"My turn," she rasped, biting her lower lip as though to focus. She intended to fleece this mark before escorting him. There was a plan in mind.

She shifted in her seat slightly, and set down another two hundred. She couldn't explain it... but she felt like there was something in the air tonight. Some slight fortune, and her instincts were usually not as wrong as they seemed to be for others. She stared at Bruss... then revealed her own, and gave him a sly wink.

"Sorry pretty boy, my creds this round. Care to try again? Only this time..." She pulled out a keycard to a hotel, and held it out teasingly. "I feel like having a little bit more fun tonight. What do you say, handsome?" She chuckled... then slipped it down her shirt, so that their mark could see exactly where it was. "Then again, depends on how lucky you feel tonight." She slightly jerked her head towards the exit, giving him her best cool-eyed amber stare, nibbling on her lower lip.

"Wanna go another round, get your creds back?"

Sighing, Kai gave up his spot for the time being. He sipped and watched his partner take the lead and begin another round of dice. At first he was just sure she was good but then he felt something else. There was another factor in play and it had something to do with the arkanian hybrid.

She won. His eyes darted from the dice back to Ilana with a scrutinizing look. He had a feeling that her high roll was not just from chance. Bruss looked surprised and a little bothered by the loss. But what caught even more attention was the subsequent seduction of the attractive medical proffesional. Kai looked around, seeing some stares and hungry looks.

From beneath the table Kai's fingers curled in and made the motions to assist with his attempt at influencing the Karkarodon's mind. The ghoulish dark sider knew that the simple minded shark-man was easily influenced especially in this state. Kai was just adding to Bruss's more primal desires. There was no specific thought other than the thought that every living being had.

"I think I actually know a place with higher wagers. Maybe that will interest you...Anna right?" He stood up from the table, thinking he was the perfect ladies man. "Can I come?" Kai asked despite being completely ignored at that point. "Yeah, sure whatever." Being dismissed this time did not bother him. Instead it told him his influence was working. Though to the Doc it probably just seemed like her wiles were working better than she had expected. Then again...I've fallen victim to those wiles too. Kai gave Ilana a look that said now was the time to go.

Wait a minute, that worked?

She caught Kai's eye, and ever so subtly nodded. Time to reel this bad boy in, and farm in the credits.
"How about someplace a little more... private?" she asked him sweetly, wrapping herself around his arm and giving him a sly smile. "Where stakes are high... but the rewards can surely go much higher?" she simpered, tilting her head.

She could see him debate. Her, and her attached companion, and her voice lowered as she leaned in closer to whisper as though they were the only two in on this.

"We can ditch him at the door; I don't want to share tonight."
She pressed against so he could feel the edge of the room card... and finally, the shark boy grinned.

"Sounds like a good gamble to me, Anna."

She smirked up at him, and grabbed her bag, leading him out back.

If the Quarren guard were smart, he'd have cleared out by now. If not, she'd have no problems cutting him down and dragging the potential sushi into the speeder with herself and Kai. Hopefully Kai collected the credits, too, they would possibly be needed.

She'd cast the net, and he was falling for it so far.

Hook, line...

For the rest of the time they were in the basement Malakai Beck would keep his mouth closed. He pretended to be some simple street punk that had happened to find his way into some back room gambling den. The woman who accompanied him leaving his company for another man. He trailed after Bruss and Ilana as they headed out the back door, winnings in hand.

To one side he saw the Quarren with a little bit different posture than before. The doctor's actions had a lasting affect. But the Grysk could not leave well enough alone.

"You took a break and don't remember letting us pass." His hand with its palm facing the ground moved aside for the dark sider to alter the aquatic bouncer's mind. But the Quarren just stared back. "Yeah...I'll forget I saw you alright. Right after I dump you in a gutter some where... watch your back dirt bag." The man raised a devices, a short flash and then a smile on his face tentacled face as he lowered the recorder. Hopefully Ilana and Bruss were headed back towards the air speeder. Kai was debating whether or not to follow through with the previous thought about violence. The recorder the Quarren had would place him here. Then again they had been there longer than he wanted to be already. Turning away he headed after his cohort, leaving the clue that he had been there in the Quarren's possession. Pay him a visit some other time.

She smirked at her newfound companion, wrapping her arms around his bicep as though to press closer, amber eyes glinting. "Let's go to my place," she almost purred, winking, and he stepped into the passenger side. If Kai was joining them, he'd have to get in the back, because she slipped easily into the front, bringing the engine to life with a confident smile.

She would lift the speeder away from the building... and into a darkened alley, doors automatically locking.
"Aw, shoot," she pouted, glancing about. "I must've made a wrong turn..."

Shark Boy looked nervous. Time to act.

Just as he was leaning towards her-- either to ask a question, or what, she hardly cared-- she twisted her wrist in his direction, aiming the dart at his throat.

He blinked at the pricking sting and hissed, plucking the dart from his neck. She was about to reach for her blaster when he suddenly launched a fist to her nose, but wobbled at the last second, the fist clipping at her jaw instead. She grunted and her head whipped back, lip throbbing, and pulled out her blaster to shoot...

But he flopped back, the light glazing over in his eyes.
"You... bit..." he slurred, and then slumped. She scowled, wiping a hand across her lip.

"Damn," she hissed, wincing at the sting. There would probably be a bruise there, too... nothing she couldn't live with, but it still was kriffing annoying. She glanced back to the back seat towards Kai, features set in their remote coolness once more. "So... your place or mine? Let's take care of this filth as soon as possible."

The sneakers of the Grysk made small splashes on some of the shallow puddles as he jogged to catch up. Bruss hadn't seemed to notice he had been left behind for a moment. That was for the best.

Getting in the backseat without hesitation. His shoulders rolled and Kai pulled his backpack off so it could sit next to him. But as he was getting it off his sleeve caught in one of the clips around the cuff. Of course that was also the time the bold doctor decided to dart the shark. Darting the shark He would make that a thing.

When Ilana cursed and the Karkarodon became incapacitated, Kai finally wrenched his sleeve free and tore some of his cuff. "Sorry. I guess I could have tried headbutting him." But she remained on task and asked for directions. That made him chuckle a little. "I haven't seen your place. Is it nearby?" He made an obvious attempt at smiling in a charming manner to ease the tension knowing she was probably feeling streesed.

Reaching forward he checked the vitals of Bruss to make sure he was doing fine. He was not exactly who Ilana had expected to shoot with her sedative. He placed a hand on the back of the Karkarodon's head and focused on lulling Bruss's mind into an even more willing slumber, adding to the sedative's affects. "Yeah whatever that sedative was it really konked him. Long lastin' but not fast actin' apparently." He said like it was a slogan for some over the counter drug.

She merely gave Kai a neutral face, staring at him through the rearview mirror. "It's fine. He's lucky I didn't stab him instead." All traces of the former flirting woman was gone; in her place was the same cold-faced medical professional before, all fun left and back to business.

It was better that way, anyways. More control.
"Close enough," she deadpanned, eyeing their unconscious mark. "At least it worked; I wasn't certain if it would."

She reversed the car out of the lot, then slowly back. Best to stick with byways and side streets; she didn't want to explain to any local yokels why she had a large, unconscious Karkodon in a stolen speeder. Not that anyone would care, but it was always best to exercise caution.

"Got any better places in mind, boss?"

Ilana mentioned the unnecessary, though probably cathartic, act of stabbing the now unconscious Karkarodon. Kai could only smile at the relatable sensation she was feeling. She wasn't friendly. But she was real.

The Grysk thought about how she was not the type to have a permanent residence. The arkanian doctor was more the type to be on the move with her work so it was no surprise she hinted at going to a place he suggested rather than her abode which she likely rented. "Yeah go down a few levels. Should be able to get some privacy near the water treatment."

It was a mostly automated area that held little reason for most traffic to occure. Plus Kai knew that there were a few ways of disposing a body. Jettison into space...that could also work. Nah any evidence gets preserved. Oooh maybe I'll get a meat grinder. He thought to himself during the trip. Occasionally he would provide simple directions. This was not the first time he had been down this way. On the one hand he also figured that Ilana was not in the mood for small talk.

Eventually they would come to the water treatment district. It was massive and stretched in multiple directions. The smell was hardly pleasant given that the water coming in to be treated had to begin getting filtered at some point. Algae based filtration and treatment had its own musty smell. Kai directed Ilana to park where she was not easily visible by any patrol speeder.

Getting out of the air speeder Kai would watch Bruss nearly spill out onto the concrete. The structures here were probably hundreds of years old if not older. But the Legionnaire just stared as the open mouthed shark man, letting him wallow on the dirty ground a few extra moments. But he would pick him up and sling him over his shoulders, grunting as he did so and headed down a long hallway. "Come on. This way. Doc."

She was grateful that Kai was not one for small talk, else she really would have started stabbing at something, or just giving herself another shot of nerve block. That first hypo was already fading fast, and she was feeling a little less than generous with their cargo slumped in the passenger seat.

Her lip stopped bleeding, so that was a plus.

She allowed herself the faintest flicker of a smile when he simply dropped Bruss on the ground for a spell, stretching out long limbs and sighing. The air reeked, but she would have to deal with that for now; this was Kai's world now, she would simply follow. She simply picked up her bag, and wordlessly stepped behind him, glancing back.

"Do you want me to take care of that Quarren later?" she asked mildly, head tilted. "Or would Bruggan do the honors?"
