The screen cut to the Empress, sitting behind a desk that she had addressed the galaxy from before. Her message tonight wasn't a complicated one, but it was one that would shock many.

Ladies and gentlemen of the galaxy, tonight I have come to you to announce my resignation as Empress, she said, pausing a moment to let it sink in to everyone else. It was a surreal moment for her as well, but there was no question that it was what she wanted.

Years ago, I took control of the Sith from the Eternal and set our people on a new path. One that has forged a strong government for the galaxy to thrive in, she said. The Sith had come a long way, and she hoped that path would not be lost when she stepped down.

Though I will be stepping aside to tend to other, personal, matters, I leave the Empire in the hands of those who have helped me run it up until now, she said.

Lord Anaris will take the position of Empress with my departure and guide the Empire in its continued mission to bring peace and security to the galaxy, she said.

Her reasons for the decision were many. The friends she had buried, the daughter she wanted to raise, the things in her life she had lost, and the planet and people she missed ruling. But those reasons were her own, and not the business of the galaxy at large. There would be rampant speculation and tabloids galore, but ultimately, there was only one more thing she needed to say to the galaxy.

May the Empire ever prosper.

Vex stared at the news hologram in her office at the top of Castle Gaol on Belsavis with open shock. Shock that slowly faded into grim understanding. Now she knew why the Empress had looked so solemn on Serenno. That wistful distance had hinted at her intentions then, but Vex had been too blind to see it. Resigning didn't seem to be an option for a Sith monarch, but here it was. And now, Darth Anaris was Empress.

Vex took a step back from her holographic display, flicking it off with a thought through the Force. The implications of this move whirled through her head like a maelstrom. Functionally, nothing would change yet. But with a war on, a change in leadership could very much shift the dynamic in the ongoing fight with the Jedi. The Empire would need real leaders during this time of transition. And she could either sit here in her prison and wait for them to rise, or she could put on her armor and rise herself.

Vex chose the latter.

She padded over to her desk and hit the intercom button, connecting her to Ranami, her personal attendant. "Warm the ship's engines," she said. "And alert the Purge to expect my arrival."

"Going somewhere, my Lady?" Ranami's voice crackled over the comms.

Vex briefly thought of going to Dathomir. Perhaps the Emp— Darth Andruil would need someone to talk to. She quickly decided against it. Andruil clearly wanted some time alone. She would grant that for now and talk to the woman she had come to admire later. For now, it was time to do the work of the Empire. "Just have my ship ready," she said before closing the comms. Then she tapped the amulet at her neck, shifting into a more publicly presentable face, and got to work.

He knew this was coming, and even then it was surreal hearing it. He put the armor on and was already in Sith space. It was down to just him and the new ‘Empress’ as Sith leadership. It was something he despised - he was not a man of ambition when it came to Sith and he had no interest in becoming Emperor. However, he still expanded the Empire and made the right alliances almost methodically out of principle. Raze wanted to serve the Empress and Emryc wanted to use this as an opportunity to wash his hands of any Sith ties. The internal battle would wage viciously.

“My lord,” An Imperial General asked, “What are our orders?”

“We maintain status quo,” The mechanized voice responded, “Keep the fleets positioned where they are.”

He turned to the other person in the room - the newly ascended Grand Inquisitor, “Keep a lookout for any Sith attempting to claw a bit too eagerly towards leadership or any signs of an insurgency. A new Empress does not mean the transition of power will be smooth.”

The Dark Lord stepped towards the exit, “I will go meet with the Empress.”

Calm settled over the Grandmaster. Alex sat where she often did when news seemed to break, high above Yavin. Had she expected this? No. Did this change the war? Probably not. The Empire was still defended by Raze...and Andruil was not gone…just absent. The Order’s plans would remain the same. They were no safer simply because Andruil no longer called herself Empress.

Any transition of power created opportunities. Chances they would take to find advantage. She needed to focus on those but the Force gnawed at her. For months, the path beneath her felt different. Solid…as if she neared the end of a journey. The Light was calling her home but she not ready…the Order was not ready. She promised she would not leave them as others had. Trailing shock and pain in their wake. She swore never to repeat those mistakes. The Order would be stronger when her time ended.

And yet, Andruil’s abdication did not feel like a victory. Rather, another step impossible to ignore. The Force prodding her to reach the end. The pull only growing stronger. She frowned and pushed herself from her seat. Soon but not yet. Alex locked away the nagging prompts of the Force. She would decide when she was ready. The Morellian Jedi could not shake the feeling the choice would not remain hers for much longer.

Betrayal. Charlotte hurled a glass at the viewscreen. Her throne room echoing with the tinkle of the explosion. Why did she feel this way? She had not returned to the Empire in months…she rarely saw the Empress…they barely knew each other. But, Andruil had been the first. The first to push her. Believe she could be something more. The Queen had been there when Charlotte finally punished her family for all the evils laid at her feet. Charlotte served the Darkness, but Andruil had been her Queen. She felt no loyalty to Anaris. Fuck, she felt no loyalty to the Empire. Cairo had left her. Andruil rode off into the darkening sunset. How many knew her heritage now? The truth of what she was, that her heart was a Sith. Cairo, Andruil…maybe Ashla. All gone. Why had she ever thought different.

Stupid girl.

The galaxy was always harsh. She had forgotten the lessons of her youth. No one cared for her…she cared for herself. The greater her power, the safer she was. These betrayals, these fears, meant nothing ensconced in the trappings of her strength. The Queen Mother stood from her throne. She would not be vulnerable. She would not be subject to the whims of others. The Consortium would grow. Her control stretching out like her long fingers. Then she would find a way to shift that power within the Empire.

She would find a way to barter her stranglehold on the Free Worlds into Imperial strength. She needed time to plan, and she needed greater resources. The Hapes Consortium’s wealth was considerable, but she required greater influence. She drummed her fingers together. Time to work.

Why?

That was the single word that repeated in the Brentaalan's mind as he shut off the holo. He'd remembered when the "Empress" had assumed her position, how it had come so suddenly, and after such an obviously violent seizure of power. He'd remembered when she'd announced how most of her council had been "removed." This was, to Laeonas, a woman who cared only for furthering her own power-- a woman who would kill her own people and slaughter millions of innocents in barbaric acts of cruelty, just to protect and expand the influence of her empire.

And yet, here she was, abdicating.

How could someone who'd dedicated so much to her own advancement just surrender it? She hadn't had a change of hard; she'd made that clear by appointing a successor who she promised would continue it's mission. The galaxy would continue to burn and it's people would mindlessly march into the jaws of tyranny-- the only difference was the one at the top. How could such an announcement be so important, and yet nothing in the galaxy would fundamentally change?

He couldn't understand why it had happened-- in truth, he could barely even speculate. None of it made sense, and ultimately, none of it would matter. As long as there were Sith in the galaxy, they'd need to be killed, and whoever sat at the top didn't matter. The Empress clearly didn't care about it, and neither should he. So the Brentaalan got back to his meditations, and the wheels kept turning.
