“Ah, there she is—the Ebon Hawk. My pride and joy; the fastest ship in the Outer Rim!”
― Davik Kang

Fiach was a creature of habit. She was a traditionalist for a start – hence the Jedi robes in shades of brown and beige, and the choice of an R2 unit for an astromech droid.

And her preference for ships was similarly old school. And, in keeping with what she believed a Jedi should be, in addition for a need to go undercover on missions, she made the call to commandeer an old light freighter that would look entirely inconspicuous to a casual bystander – but by state-of-the-art under the hood.

Thus she stood in front of an old Dynamic-II Light Freighter – something built many, many years ago at the Kuat Drive Yards. It had seen better days, but that added to its worth in her eyes. But she knew she had her work cut out to upgrade the systems – and so donned some old overalls, rolled her sleeves up, and got to work.

As Fiach stood back and looked at the ship that was currently taking up a corner of the hangar at Ajan Kloss, she reviewed a datapad of specifications. It was technically a light freighter and was composed of durasteel and transparisteel. It was just under 35 metres long and could be crewed by one – although there was a seat for a co-pilot in the cockpit. It could comfortable carry up to six – with berths for that many.

Of course, Fiach had no intention of using it for transporting people and had planned to turn one of the rooms into a place for meditation – although she wanted two cabins, as she would likely be travelling with her Padawan a lot of the time.

It could take up to 100 tons of cargo, but again, she had no intention of using it for this purpose. But she did have a number of crates she would carry with her. On many worlds, credits were of no value and bartering was the only way to gain materials – or even information. So, she had a number of containers each holding different items – from medicines to machine parts…things that a world that did not have a currency would most likely benefit from.

Some aspects of the re-build were straightforward and she did not tamper with what was considered standard. Like the fact that it was designed to travel for up to two standard months without docking or landing. So things like the food storage and energy cells were simply replaced if worn and serviced if not.

One aspect that was upgraded was the top speed. This was a challenge, given the engine and fuselage could not be changed, but various components were switched and Fiach was pleased to be able to squeeze not only better speed but uplift the average maneuvering characteristics to something more workable for what she intended to use it for.

She did not tamper with the weapon systems but merely ensured the two dual medium laser turrets were fully operational.

The hyperdrive and navicomputer were another thing to be overhauled as was the deflector screen generator. And one thing to be removed to reduce weight were the multiple escape pods - which were reduced to 1 x 6-being (standard) and 2 x 1-being (eschewing three units).

The Dynamic-II was essentially a remake of the original Dynamic-class freighter. Designed to be functionally very similar to the YT-1300, the Dynamic-II was chosen by her as it was a highly modifiable ship that she could upgrade and alter.

Another plus was the fact that it was popular among independent freight haulers and smugglers. The fact it could fill almost any role that it’s needed for meant it was a common sight in starports. Unlike the YT-1300, people who purchase Dynamic freighters were about function over nostalgia.

Fiach made steady progress on the ship’s rebuilding. It was soon flight-ready and she took it for atmospheric rides first, before venturing into space. But making it simply ready was not her aim. She wanted to pimp it, as one of the mechanics that often helped her out had said.

The thing was, the ship cried out for upgrades. In fact, it was built with modification in mind; as a stock Dynamic-class ship possessed only modest weaponry and shielding. Customisation was almost obligatory. Though not recognized for their speed or toughness, Dynamic-class freighters were regarded as sturdy builds; coupled with the ease of modification, the ship was prized amongst smugglers and traders alike – and although neither of these roles suited Fiach, the fact the ship was synonymous with them gave her the confidence it would seem relatively invisible wherever she went. A shiny new ship would draw unwanted attention after all.

She had neither the budget nor spare parts to upgrade the class 3 hyperdrive – but gave her expertise free reign when it came to updating the navigation computer. And although it was typically crewed by two pilots, she knew that with the aid of her mech-droid, she could manage most missions solo (although it would limit any offensive capability as she couldn’t fly and man a turret simultaneously).

Her next task was to ensure the onboard medical bay, located near the central main hold, could provide sufficient triage options for injured beings. Her use of the Force to heal was rudimentary, so she considered seeing if she could borrow a medical droid for evacuation missions.

In case of emergency, such as a hull breach, she ensured every room aboard the ship was equipped with airlocks which could seal shut, containing the compromised sections and retaining the atmosphere in unaffected areas. She also built up supplies so that it could carry two standard months’ worth of consumables, allowing her to make extended trips.

Fiach was never one for aesthetics necessarily but she appreciated the three prongs that formed a trident-shaped hull fore of the freighter’s midpoint, with the central protrusion extending the farthest. The prongs were asymmetrical; a hull section, containing a landing ramp, was located between the central and starboard prongs. The boxy central section of the ship, with a viewport located at its fore, held the ship’s cockpit and communications station.

These two rooms were connected via a long hallway to the ship’s main hold, located at the ship’s centre. The flanking port and starboard prongs were mirrored images of each other and contained crew bunks and amenities.

A lateral break in the ship’s hull plating marked the freighter’s midpoint. For armament, a pair of large laser cannons were mounted port and starboard, and dorsal and ventral turrets could be installed just behind the central prong. A ladder, located just behind the main hold, allowed access to these turrets.

The freighter’s hull aft of midpoint formed a half-saucer with the fore of the ship. This distinctive design allowed the ship to fit the same area for cargo and systems as a larger, more angular hull; other shipbuilders would later mimic this design even today.

Two cargo areas, flanking the engine room in the central aft of the ship, could store 60 tons of cargo. The starboard cargo area was large enough to function as a garage, with ample space to store her swoop bike and a basic workstation. These connected directly to the landing ramp.

Two large, circular engines were mounted to the very back of the ship and provided the thrust necessary for the ship to move through realspace at a decent speed. Again, she upgraded these to maximise manoeuvrability and she also boosted the stabilisers to maximise handling.

In terms of a finishing touch, and despite her view of machines as purely functional, she decided the Dynamic-class freighters predominately grey hull with so many patches of different shades where she’d added and upgraded looked - if anything - too shabby. So, she decided to add a little colour to the mix.

And what better than her favoured shade of lilac!
