Burinjina

Excerpt · Description · History · Inhabitants · Flora & Fauna · Intent

Burinjina, sometimes known as simply Burinja, was a long unnoticed planet in the galaxy's Outer Rim. While mining operations from the first Sith Empire once threatened its peace, they have long since been abandoned and Burinjina has continued to develop with limited contact to the galaxy at large. It’s people, flora, and fauna have thrived in the interim, leading to a diverse planet filled to the brim with life, and a deep connection to the Force because of it, it’s deposit of Kyber crystals were proof of that. Only in recent years have its people been more welcoming of offworlders to their planet.

Description

While sustaining a number of terrain types, much of Burinja's inner lands are comprised of dry desert and bushland, covering over great expanses of natural resources beneath its surface, such as the Karora Basin. Though home to some dramatic sights, the climate and conditions make it territory that is sparsely populated compared to some other areas of Barinja.

Closer to the sea, temperate forest lands once marked for clearance have developed for millenia, and thriving old growth bush now stretches across the backs of mountains and hills that border the planets southern continent, overtaking casts tracks of mining land and infrastructure that now lies hidden beneath the trees.

These forests transition into their tropical rainforest and jungle counterparts as one moves toward the equator, where some of the planets more threatening flora and fauna have made their homes. Creature of all shapes and sizes live still within.

A large majority of the coastlines of Burinja feature extensive coral reefs and soft, golden beaches, the abundance of life making them places of great joy and at times pilgrimage for the native people, as well as noted sites Force presence. It is near the greatest of these that Kyber crystals can be found growing in caves both near the ocean, and below its surface, a prize valued highly by the local peoples, though do not know their true value as yet.

The native Burinja people have made their homes right across the planets and its vast continents, discovering niches and livelihoods amongst even the harshest of climates. Those within the more temperate climbs have developed more permanent agricultural settlements that have grown into large cities, though they still maintain a reverence for the nature that surrounds them (it is no wonder such settlements have often been established near sights of great energy in the Living Force). While the many that live across the plains and bushland were generally more nomadic, moving between resources over the course of years so as to avoid overusing the delicate ecosystem of the planet, in the intervening millenia most have settled now into more permanent populations with agriculture and minor industry sustaining both the people, and the world around them.

History

For a great millennia Burinja was inhabited solely by its native peoples, as well as the extensive and diverse flora and fauna that accompanied its varied biomes. While permanent settlements were at first rare, they have become increasingly common as technological and agricultural developments allow them to settle more definitively across the planet.

Though for many life goes on as it once had, close to the land.

It was during the first Sith Empire that Burinja was discovered by the galaxy outside, and it’s prized resources. Within six months, mining operations were established all down the eastern shelf of the planets southern continent, establishing a heavy colonial regime in the lands they controlled.

But with the fall of the Empire, colonists fled in droves and the native people retook the lands that had been lost and ravaged by heavy industry.

In the centuries that followed, many of the tribes established stronger relations between each other, forming great alliances amongst each other. With their shared knowledge and strengths brought together, over time these have developed into larger nations and cities across the planet. Agriculture has soared and minor industry has begun to spread as well. But cultural memory of the violence done upon them and the landscape by the Empire pushes them to never do such damage themselves, and indeed their own knowledge of sustaining their environment remains incredibly strong.

It is now then that they begin to open themselves to the galaxy once more, though sporadic trader visits occurred in the interim, and find what has become of the galaxy.

Inhabitants

The native Burinja people inhabited the majority of the planet before the appearance of the Imperial colonisers. With them now gone, the Burinja peoples once again cover the planets continents all themselves.

Close to the land and the Force across the planet, the peoples have little interst in exploiting their planets resources, and instead put great effort into maintaining the viability of their lands they find themselves custodians of.

A minor population of Caskadag flourish in the planets arid interior, brought initially by Imeprial colonisers thousands of years ago, they are rarely seen by Burinja nativesand few know how their society has developed since then.

Burinja cultural practices are close to nature. Many seek out the Kybet crystals buried along the planets coasts as a right of passage and honour. And the planets vital Force energy has led to the development of faith and ritual practices surrounding it and sites containing great energy. While a priestly caste of force sensitives exists, they follow similar cultural practices of maintenance of those spaces as larger Burinja society does of the land at large.

Flora & Fauna

Vast forests of eucalyptus stand tall across much of the planets south, interspersed by the wildfire flowers whose summer flower is known to be a sign of significance for the Burinja, used in medicines and ceremonies by many groups. Beyond this, bushland is covered in low lying scrub, and hardy plants dot the arid interior, thriving on the little water that can be found there.

Burinja's fauna was highly varied, though often specialised to its particular biome, with those of each area playing roles in the mythology of the Burinja people. While Krykna spiders and Malingee worms made their homes within the planets jungles, within the planets forests could be found a dazzling variety of bird and marsupial species that kept low profiles. Meanwhile in the planets deserts, small reptiles and insects survived off the reduced resources and beating sun.

Brought in by the colonisers, Dewbacks are used as beasts of burden by the Republica's interests, though those that have escaped have thrived in the planets deserts and more arid lands.

And in the intervening years since the Empire left, the concentration of such species has only grown in areas away from Burinja peoples, their maintenance practices helping ot sustain and grow such areas and populations.

Intent

An Australian inspired planet that I feel the galaxy lacks I submitted last timeline, and resubmit now updated to reflect the intervening years, and plan to use in plots. Though their should be plenty within that any faction could use for interesting stories.
