DESCRIPTION
The Cal-class battleship is an archaic pattern of super-heavy warship originally manufactured by the Rendili Hyperworks corporation. The Cal-class is itself a refinement of the ancient siege battleships of the Kumauri Empire, a regional power in the Outer Rim during the Republic's early years of expansion. Although quickly conquered and absorbed by the Republic, the innovative naval architecture of the Kumauri went on to influence warship design in the Republic and beyond for millennia, the Cal class being arguably the ultimate development of Kumauri shipbuilding.

The Cal, by modern standards, is a titanic vessel, 3,000 meters in length, with a crew of 20,000 personnel, up to 8,000 passengers, consumables for up to 4 years in space and 15,000 tons of cargo. By the standards of its time, it fairly bristled with weapons; 8 dual heavy turbolaser turrets sprouted from the ship's 2 raised superstructures, augmented by dozens of medium and light turbolasers in hull mounts, plus a large number of quad laser turrets for close-in defense. The ship carried a full squadron of starfighters as well. Like most ships of its day, it was not equipped with shields, although examples which have survived into the present have generally been retrofitted with deflector screen generators.

This conventional armament was not what the Cal and ships like it were known for, however.

Dating back to the days of the original Kumauri battleships, warships of the Cal's lineage have always had a specific party trick. Namely, the inclusion of a pair of enormous fixed cycler cannons, used to fire energy-sheathed solid projectiles at incredible velocity. These projectiles - often large metallic slugs, although they can be almost anything solid and conductive - were used for planetary bombardment, striking targets on the surface of planets and moons from orbit. Each shot, equivalent in destructive power to a brace of torpedoes, was capable of destroying most of a large city. Though not as effective in ship-to-ship combat, the Cal's prime weapon was also devastating against any enemy vessels it managed to hit.

The Cal class was the last word in planetary pacification for thousands of years, until the advent of world-encompassing deflector shields rendered it suddenly obsolete, the ship's rounds neutralized by the layered particle and ray screens which began to become standard. Over the course of a few centuries, as more and more worlds adopted the new defensive technology, the Cal and warships like it were gradually phased out of service; even by the time of the Ruusan Reformations, the type was considered a relic.

Despite their obsolescence, the Cal class and its ancestors would go on to inspire later vessels, such as the Galactic Empire's Onager-class star destroyer, which used an even more potent prime weapon.

In the present day, Cal-class battleships have begun to reappear on the battlefield, resurrected from millennia-long slumbers in forgotten mothball fleets and rescued from the backlogs of ship-breaking yards. Though their cycler cannons are no longer effective against most planetary targets, and their conventional armament is lacking compared to many modern battlecruiser-scale warships, they are still nothing to sneeze at, being enormous and quite durable. Their prime weapons are also surprisingly effective in the anti-ship role, if and when they are able to line up a shot.

LEGALITY
Restricted. Cal-class battleships are classified as heavy capital ships under Galactic law. As such, civilian owners are generally barred from operating them legally.

INTENT
To bring a ship from Legends into our site's fanon.

RESTRICTIONS
Cal-class battleships are capital ships, and cannot be owned or operated by individual characters. These vessels may be used as faction assets, however.
