History

The history of Rooks dates back to the time of the Galactic Republic, before the Clone Wars. Many of their roots are believed to be associated with Mandalore's neighboring system of Concord Dawn though many lived on Mandalore as well. On Concord Dawn they boasted numerous foundries and worked their craft.

In 1 B.B.Y. during the reign of the galactic Empire. When the Galactic Empire first made its move into Mandalorians space, the then Regent of Mandalore, Bo-Katan was forced out of power by members of Clan Saxon. The Rook Clan were some of the first to be attacked by forces of the Empire. First it was due to the clan's access to Beskar that likely made them a target for Imperial forces. A record to this day has been decoded by rebel code breakers that indicate mercenaries and assassins were sent to 'collect serpent scales' for a high price. This was before the Empire had made any overt action against the Mandalorians. The former Galactic Republic was still believed to be a possible ally by some or just another outsider by others.

It wasn't until the Imperial Supercommandos enforcing the Empires will that it became clear there was a campaign to dominate the Mandalorians. One Rook clan member sent warnings to some requesting assistance to rally against the Empire but by then it was too late. Eventually this would lead the members of Clan Rook to fighting in secret and avoiding notice. This also would impact how they viewed other clans. But this would change eventually when members of the clan joined forces with the Mandalorian protectors and other clans to form the Mandalorian Resistance.

When the Imperial presence was eventually pushed out of Mandalorian space many members of the Rook clan swore oaths to be continue on as guards for for Bo-katan after she inherited the darksaber and returned to leading the Mandalorian people. But not all members of clan Rook were as ready to assist. With their former enemy, the Empire, gone their skills and desire to return to their previous way of life led many family groups of clan Rook to become estranged from one another.

While the Rook clan members under Bo-katan continued to thwart the Empire, it would ultimately lead to The Great Purge. The Galactic Empire ceased their attempts to occupy Mandalorian space and instead attack it. Concord Dawn was turned into the cratered planet it is today, ending the lives of the resident Rook clan members. Their stores of beskar they used to craft artful pieces of armor for other Mandalorians were raided and melted down. The beskar worn on the Mandalorians the Empire killed. With the Rook clan already being scattered and self isolating, they were instrumental in aiding others in escaping the clutches of the empire but not without heavy loses.

By 100 A.B.Y. the members of the Rook Clan were primarily found in nomadic groups across the galaxy. In the wake of the Great Purge they adopted the Way of Mandalore. While known for their prominence in hit and run tactics this also transitioned into piracy, mercenary work and other crime that has put Rook also on questionable terms with other Clans.

Culture

"Not every rawl has the same skin. Some are poisonous, some with bleed you dry, eat you whole, others will spit, but they all bite and aren't to be underestimated." - A Vizsla on Rooks

One aspect about the Rook clan that others must keep in mind is their adaptability and survivalist nature. Most Rook families encourage independent thinking, freedom, self expression as well as self reliance. While the traditions of the clan were once more uniform, the fracturing of the clan coupled with their history of changing to survive has led to smaller family units to develop or drop traditions. Most notably is that not all members of the clan follow the Way of the Mandalore. There is also the tendency to be skilled at armoring and creating. Members of Clan Rook are inventive though with a lack of Beskar this allowed them to adapt to using other equipment and adopt skills that traditionalist Mandalorians might not come across.

Among the other Mandalorian clan, Rook is considered to have 'fallen from grace' and composed of tenacious members that often have something hidden up their sleeve. But the members of Clan Rook take being called a 'snake' as a mark of pride. Of the existing clans it is believed that clan Lone and Saxon were the two clans to have particularly bad blood with the Rook clan. Clan Wren and Kryze over the years still has decent relations with one another in terms of Mandalorian politics.

Colors & Sigil

The original colors of the Rook clan is grey, gold and purple. The iconography is used is similar to other clans and often put with a more serpent based design. The Rook clan used the image of a coiled fanged snake (pictured to the left) but different designs of snakes and different specific species have been used for different family groups. Some might incorporate a bes'kad in their icon or have the serpent poised for an attack but it is usually a single fanged snake with its mouth open.

Assets

The Rook Clan are known to utilize outfitted personal transport that can rival most military planetary defense starfighters. However these are usually the shared property of smaller family groups of Rook clan families. The Clan as a whole does not possess any major assets to speak of at this point. A gathering of them are believe to be hiding somewhere in the moons or asteroids of Concord Dawn or Bandomeer just outside of Mandalorian space.

Intent

To build Personal Lore for my character @Roland and develop potential background detail for that to be built up and used with other characters as well as build on the canon info about them.
