DESCRIPTION
The CLL-8 is one of the oldest and most consistently profitable products manufactured by the Cybot Galactica corporation, having remained in their catalog for many millennia with only minor changes over its long production lifespan. Classified as a binary loadlifter - itself a category of droid which predates even the Old Republic - the CLL-8 does exactly what you would think; it lifts and carries heavy loads, and communicates in a dialect of the droid language known as binary.

The CLL-8 is among the simplest droids credits can buy, both in terms of mechanical systems and cognitive function. Like most binary loadlifters, the CLL-8 is powerful and sturdy, able to shift objects weighing up to 20 standard tons by itself. It is also extremely literal-minded in its interpretation of any instructions given to it, a fact which has proven frustrating to many operators of the type.

This last characteristic has given the CLL-8 a reputation for grievous stupidity; in one famous instance, for example, an improperly programmed binary loadlifter continued to stack heavy crates in the corner of a warehouse until the combined weight of the crates caused the floor to collapse. The droid proceeded to continue bringing crates to the resulting hole, and eventually collapsed the floor below it with a similar pile. In the end, the single droid caused irreparable structural damage to the warehouse; afterward, it was discovered that while the droid had been instructed to stack the crates, it had not been provided with conditions under which it should cease its task.

Although CLL-8s can understand simple instructions given to them in basic by organics, most operators of binary loadlifters keep protocol droids on hand to ensure that work orders are programmed in such a way that the loadlifters can correctly interpret them, avoiding accidents and other undesirable behavior. The task of programming a binary loadlifter is considered very similar to the programming of moisture vaporators.

CLL-8s are equipped with heavy-duty legs and manipulator arms, the latter of which can be tipped either with flat cargo palettes or heavy-duty grasping claws. They are also equipped with a standard measuring scanner for determining the dimensions of the loads they are assigned to carry, and a laser scanner for reading industry standard identity bands.

Although, like other droids, CLL-8s will develop more complex personalities and new skills over time, the type generally remains docile and slow-witted. As such, most operators do not generally bother subjecting CLL-8s to regular memory wipes.

LEGALITY
