COMMENT: Government 'collapse'? What really happened to the Alliance?

It would have been almost impossible for someone to fail to notice that, almost overnight, two pan-galactic governments collapsed.

If you didn't notice that, I can't help you.

The Free World's Alliance and the New Republic announced their 'intention for mass secession', effectively ending the two groups as unified governments.

One news agency suggested that these secession movements had been prompted by planetary leaders being 'tired of being dragged into wars on behalf of leaders who are out of touch with the desires of their people.'

Of course, as a prime example, the Free World Alliance planets were pretty silent about this issue until they voted to succeed from the Alliance.

If the many thousands of planets had been so disenfranchised from the decisions of the Alliance for so long, they've kept that viewpoint to themselves.

Indeed, as sources within the Alliance had said to the Herald, the Senators of the Alliance had been meeting regularly, and cooperation between the various governments was 'as strong as ever'.

Sure, the New Republic, gutted by its Chancellor becoming one of the Killik 'joined' may have felt disconnected from the leadership, but the Alliance?

Nothing could be further from the truth.

Based on a defensive pact, the Alliance has engaged in numerous battles, which have seen political leaders stepping into the battlefield themselves; the Alliance has shown no sign of wanting to disband.

The article covered by 'Holonet News' just yesterday did not refer to the reasons behind the Alliance's supposed collapse.

There is very little evidence to suggest that such reasons exist.

We've reached out to numerous members of the Alliance for comment, and whilst more fulsome interviews will emerge in the coming days and weeks, the consensus is that the Alliance should not have 'collapsed' and that the media establishment may have overstated the events.

Whilst there is sizable proof that the New Republic was hanging on by tenterhooks, with its Chancellor seemingly 'out of action', the Alliance cannot say the same.

The Herald will bring you more on this story as it develops, as we conduct deep dives into what's happening in the Alliance and what the future could hold.

For sure, the Alliance has faced a fair share of hardships.

Invasions from hostile powers. The AMS virus and the Killik attacks.

However, sources inside the Alliance show that the Alliance has come together in each case, with individual planets 'stepping up to the plate' and working together to overcome these issues.

One source confirms that rather than having a 'strongman leader', the Alliance is driven by a 'core group' of Senators from a broad and diverse range of worlds, sharing what resources they can and engaging with planets.

The source claims that suggesting otherwise is wrong and cannot be evidenced.

With this made clear by leading planets within the Alliance, questions must be asked about how the Alliance 'collapsed' and whether or not it has happened in the way the Holonet News has described.

Here at the Herald we shall endeavour to do just that.
