DESCRIPTION
The Cord-class interceptor is a light combat spacecraft which was developed and manufactured by Rothana Heavy Engineering in the years prior to the Clone Wars. Originally designed for the Outer Rim market, the Cord was sold to a number of backrocket system defense forces, where they were received with middling enthusiasm.

The Cord-class interceptor is a fairly basic craft, not much more than single-seat cockpit, a dagger-shaped fuselage - highly reminiscent of the contemporary star destroyers being built by Kuat Drive Yards, Rothana's parent company - and a large, high-output drive unit. Capable of speeds up to 110 MGLT, the Cord is slightly faster than many other ships of its era, thus giving it the ability to reach potential threats more quickly than other starfighters. Unfortunately, the Cord is limited in what it can do once it gets there; the ship is armed only with a single medium laser cannon, of dubious efficacy in a pitched nekfight against other starfighters, or against heavily armored and shielded capital ships. The Cord does have a decent amount of cargo stowage, however, about 200 kilograms, which coupled with a class 4 hyperdrive allows it to function as a light courier.

Upon acceptance of the clone army created by the Kaminoans, the Galactic Republic unwittingly found itself accepting a large number of supply contracts along with them, chiefly from Rothana Heavy Engineering, which had designed and produced nearly all the equipment used by the clones, especially early in the war. Thus, the Republic was forced to accept delivery of large numbers of Cord-class interceptors. These fighters were not especially well liked, but had the virtue of being cheap and relatively plentiful; a number of Rothana's previous customers for the type had defaulted on payments or refused delivery, forcing the company to repossess large numbers. Thus, at the outbreak of war, Rothana had a significant inventory of gently used Cords on hand, which it could not sell for full market value, but which it hardly wanted to keep, and which the Republic - desperate for any kind of combat-capable starfighter to resist the swarms of Separatist Vulture droids - could not refuse.

The Cord-class interceptor was used by the Grand Army of the Republic only until more capable starfighters could take their place. They were first reassigned to rear-echelon duties, but were ultimately retired even before the conflict had ended, sold off to neutral third parties and on the civilian market. After the rise of the Empire, a number were used by the Alliance to Restore the Republic, although this too proved short-lived. Mostly, the type wound up in the hands of pirates, low-rent mercenaries, fringers and poor system defense forces unable to afford anything better.

LEGALITY
Restricted. Cord-class interceptors are combat-rated spacecraft, and are subject to extra licensing requirements and increased scrutiny by authorities.

INTENT
To bring a vessel from canon into our site's fanon.
