Christophsis.

A planet she once had her eyes set on as the jewel to the crown she would wear, an accomplishment she once sought to hold once she would become a Senator in the ranks of the ISC. But times changed, and so had her personal goals. Since the President's declaration of war against the Sith, she lofted her gaze higher, and worked harder than ever to stand where she was now. All those sleepless nights studying, doing her research, and applying were every step to here.

Carrick, Secretary of Defense, was ahead of her. The first true step forward to her role within the ISC, and the first person to report to. She'd heard rumors, of course; so many of them flew around in the dorms she shared in Theed. That he was perhaps once of the Jedi Order, or that he was a cold man. That he was married to his work, and that he never seemed to sleep.

She took one deep breath in, and squared her shoulders.

She hadn't worn the dress her mother sent; somehow, she felt that dressing up wouldn't be the way to get the man's attention or approval. Tugging on her jacket one last time, she checked to make sure she hadn't forgotten something. Long silvery-white hair was pulled back in a simple ponytail, and she was dressed in simple black trousers and short boots that almost looked like dress shoes, a plain black blouse and dark grey jacket. Things that, should she need to, she wouldn't feel adverse to moving in. Though Ilana Morata favored beauty and image, Silvi's father's rearing also gave her a more practical sense.

Knocking twice, her voice lifted to be heard. She was a little early, after all.

"Silvi Morata, sir. I hope I'm not too late."

Opening the door if she would hear any sound to indicate she could enter, pale blue eyes would sweep the space, seeking her new boss. Truth be told, though she had seen the holos and the occasional live report, she had no idea what he looked like up close.

Once upon a time, Carrick had to drag himself away from the windows of his office. The panoramic views of the crystal fields and mines and buildings of Christophsis had taken his breath away the first few times he had seen them from such an elevated position. It had felt like he was looking over his kingdom, resplendent in emerald and sunlight.

It said something about him that even those majestic vistas had become dull to him, that he had allowed himself to become dulled to such things.

Sat behind his desk, Carrick arranged his paperwork to better suit his next appointment when Silvi Morata knocked on his door and announced herself. He paused in what he was doing, wracking his brain for a moment - why was she here again? Was she the new weapons battery pack designer? Ah. No... Morata.

She was here because of who her mother was.

With a wave of his hand, Carrick didn't answer the door so much as he pulled it open with the Force, granting her enough time to enter before waving his hand back and closing the door behind her. He didn't actually look up at her, checking over his notes once again first.

"Miss Morata, glad you could join me."
he greeted her bluntly, "First time to Christophsis?"

He gestured to his windows and flickered his eyes up to glance at her for a second before returning to his work. Bundling three paper folders together, he set a datapad atop of them and stood up straight for the first time in what felt like hours. He carefully picked up his ornate lightsaber hilt and clipped it to his waist.

"You'll get used to the view."
he assured her dismissively before tapping the stack of folders and the datapad, "These are for you - the bottom two files are on the employment benefits and expectation of duties. The top one is a folder with delivery schedules for the shipyards above. The datapad is your work datapad - lose it and I will ensure you lose your job - and it has up to date manifests on the shipyards."

Gesturing to his shirt, which currently had no tie, he continued.

"You have until I find the right tie to cross reference the folder and the datapad data - and tell me if there are any discrepancies."

Roll for quick thinking!

She knew her mother had some sort of reputation with the ISC; in the early days, they were once very close, and that she had rubbed shoulders with some of them. But several things distracted her within the first few moments. The first was the view. Emerald light that glinted and shimmered, more than even her view in Paqualis III, and then when she met the man himself. A frission of alarm shivered over her shoulders, but she didn't flinch.

It was only when he began speaking that she tore her gaze away, but it was seeing the lightsaber next that she blinked again. Uncle Sev had one on him, on occasion, when he visited her mother. And her father possessed a Sith lightsaber, though he always hid it.

Still, at his question, she began to answer it, "Yes, first time--"

But he had already moved on.

Firming her shoulders, she stepped forward to pick up the files and the datapad. Thankfully, some of this was familiar, and yet... she had her work cut out for her. Still... a physical folder? She felt like she was talking to her mother, who insisted that physical files far outweighed the digital. The digital could hold so much more data, after all.

Still, with these distractions weighing on her mind, it was his last words that destroyed her focus entirely. He expected her to cross reference all of it? While he was picking out a tie? Even the best Jedi would struggle with information overload. Still, an order was an order.

"Yes, sir."

Nodding once, she paced over to take a seat, propping the datapad on one leg securely and flipping open the folder. She was used to working like this since her days in secondary school Senatorial training. However, ... the folder manifest seemed jumbled. None of the time schedules were in order, and was that... in Chiss space-time? She frowned worriedly, feeling herself freeze for a moment as her thoughts rushed to catch up with the data stream that was literally overflowing in the folder.

She certainly felt slow, but she still bent for the task quite literally, beginning with the first time slot and manifest. Thankfully at least, some of these manifests weren't too far away from the first page. I've got my work cut out for me, she thought with bitter irony, giving a wry inner grin. There was no way she would find any discrepancies in that amount of time, but she had to try.

Can't rely on Mother's name, after all. I have to grow my own shadow, even if it takes me decades.

But she fully planned to work her hardest, even if it definitely seemed a failure to try.

Carrick eyed her from one side as he started comparing how different ties would go with his suit. The suit was grey and his shirt white so he had a bit of a choice when it came to ties - he had the chance to add some colour to it after all. He deliberately delayed for as long as he thought he could keep up the ruse before deciding to put her out of her misery. Quickly picking one that was a lovely mixture of gold and black, he tied it swiftly and marched back to his desk.

He stopped beside her.

"Anything jump out at you?"

There was an immediate issue with something on the first page, which was precisely why he had set her the task. It was something rather small so when she hesitated he reached out and tapped one of the lines. The line was about a shipment of durasteel coming from the Outer Rim to the North West.

"... that ship has come from the Galactic North West of here - but claims to be delivering Durasteel from the Outer Rim."

He didn't think he had to teach her geography so he pushed on.

"So why do you think the captain has lied about the point of origin of his goods?"

There were a number of potential reasons but he wanted to see where her mind went.

Admittedly, she knew little of durasteel imports or their origins, but she had enough knowledge of basic galactic geography that a few answers came to mind when he pointed them out. Especially when he remarked about point of origin.

Mulling over the question for a moment, she eyed the manifest again, and the data map on the datapad, before answering carefully.

"There are many reasons to lie on a ship manifest, sir," she answered. "Sabotage from enemy sources; being paid off to provide materials of less tensile strength or inferior quality is a possibility." She tapped on the pad, and the galactic map appeared. "Citing 'Outer Rim' is also a very vague term; there are a fair number of ISC planets, and other territories, in the Outer Rim. One possibility is finding a cheaper export and pocketing the difference before arriving with delivery." Blue eyes flicked up to glance at him, before swiping the map away.

"If I wanted to go down the route of particularly bad news, it could even be a spice or smuggling run using the guise of a regular freight. But until I've observed ship unload security protocol, I can't say that answer for certain, and it seems the least likely." She knew of ships; her mother still flew the old RangeMaster whenever she wanted to avoid detection from the public, and her father still possessed, last she saw him, a YT-1800 still with its' smuggling panels. Smuggling was a possibility, and one she couldn't exactly say it wasn't a thing that happened, even to the most upright of captains.

Still... something was missing. She glanced up at him again, and cocked her head slightly. "Barring the last option, one great possibility is my second proposal, a cheaper export." Admitting she was wrong wasn't a first for her; being top of her class in both secondary and University education came with plenty of helpings of humble pie. She was curious how far off the mark she would be.

Well, she might not have been able to pick out the problem as fast as he would have liked to begin with but that was something that could be taught. What couldn't be taught, in his opinion, was the ability to have multiple different opinions and theories at the same time. The worst kind of people were so blinkered that they couldn't think of anything past their own initial judgement after all. Annoyingly a lot of the people in his department suffered from such a chronic lack of active brain cells at times.

It was galling that it took a literal intern to show them up.

"Good, you're thinking and that already puts you above some of the others around here."
he 'complimented' her bluntly before pointing to the datapad, "Bring the datapad, leave the files. The paper file on the shipping isn't important now we've identified the ship and the induction work can wait."

He straightened his tie once more before gesturing wordlessly for her to fall in behind him as he started to walk away. It was time to get to the real point of his day and that required that the two of them leave his well-appointed office and get some altitude. Striding through the halls, some of the officer workers tried to flag him down before giving up and trying to flag down Silvi instead.

"Ignore them."
he ordered her bluntly, "They'll be here when we're back from the shipyard."

Exiting the building onto his private landing pad, he tossed a set of shuttle keys to Silvi.

"Can you fly?"

She blinked at his words once, then stood when he began to walk, soundlessly falling into step behind him and bringing the datapad with her. She was tempted to sneak glances at the facility around them, but years spent acting like her mother's personal secretary and accessory were just too ingrained. Though she had no doubt her mother cared for her, there was a barrier.

With Carrick, it was liberating that he hardly cared at all.

Keeping up with his long-legged stride with her own, it nonetheless took three of her own steps to every one of his; by the time they had made it to the landing pad, she could feel her cheeks begin to flush.

Guess she would have to get better walking shoes, after all.

Out of reflex, she caught the keys he tossed her way in the hand not clutching the datapad, offering him a slight grin. "Practically born to it," she answered smoothly, before turning her attention to the shuttle. "Mom hated droids flying, and Dad had an antique. You learn fast."

She wasn't going to mention her stint of illegal speedracing in Coruscant; the threat of losing a perfect-grade student was the only thing that cleared her record, and she was only caught once. Still, it was galling to be arrested by her own dad, no less.

Still, she would move to board him first, opening the shuttle door for him with a slight tilt of her head. "Sir."

Well thank the Force he hadn't been given one of those softer new generation types who could barely program their droid pilot to get them to the right coffee fly-through in the morning. He himself was an adequate pilot but he didn't enjoy the action - it was a means to an end for him so if she managed to find some joy in it on the job? More power to her and he hoped she was able to make mental notes while they flew because if she ended up flying him around much more he'd make sure to take advantage of the time to talk shop regardless.

For now he decided to ease her into the role, sliding into the backseat of the small shuttle and allowing her to perform the required pre-flight checks.

"Take us up then, Morata. Our heading is hanger bay D-32 of construction ring C-12."
he informed her as he latched himself into the safety harness, "When they ask you for the verification upon approach, put it on speaker and I'll give them my verification codes for the day."

They changed daily which was a pain but security was tight for a reason.

As Silvi started to fly closer to the shipyards, she would see several capital ships being constructed. Many of the rings were working together to assemble one of the dreadnoughts that everyone knew were the biggest weapon in the ISC fleets. Carrick would eye one as they passed.

"Do you know how long Christophsis has had capital-ship grade shipyards in orbit for, Morata?"

As she performed the checks, she glanced back at him through the open privacy visor, giving a curt nod. Buckling into the harness was as easy as breathing; driving one of these shuttles was almost mindless work, but she would execute it with great care, since it wasn't her vehicle.

Taking off, it wouldn't be hard to navigate closer to the shipyard rings; now, she permitted herself a fuller glance to what she had only seen snatches of before, when being landed by the guest shuttle a mere hour ago, still keeping an eye out for other traffic as they approached C-12. At his question, she once again flicked her gaze briefly to him before once more focusing on the flight pattern, letting out a hum.

"I do not; but I would estimate for longer than we've declared war with the Sith," she answered carefully, frowning absently. "Perhaps even when there was a great probable threat to the ISC, and before; how long, sir? Five years, ten?"

She was aware to the limits of her education; truthfully, she wasn't aware of who or where she would have been assigned to until she was right on one of the last shuttles freely permitted to leave Coruscant, which didn't feel too long ago. The ping went off to give the verification codes, and she wired it over to him to dictate, temporarily interrupting the point he might have been trying to get to.

Glancing at one of the dreadnoughts again, she was suddenly very grateful she wasn't born Force Sensitive, as far as she was aware; even being on the same side as the government that produced them gave a slight chill to the back of her neck, and she tore her gaze away, grip tightening slightly on the shuttle steering. She wasn't like the Sith or the Jedi, thank goodness.

If there wasn't enough proof that the Force only caused mayhem and misery in the galaxy just for existing, just look at the dreadnoughts. They were reminder enough there were threats to the galaxy when others gained too much power and decided to abuse it, and even though there were those without the Force that had done such things... wasn't it funny that a vast majority of the time, Force Sensitives had a part to play in it? Glancing back at Carrick once more, she kept uncharacteristically silent, drawing closer to the hangar bay.

Reasonable deductions rather than attempting to guess or admitting that she didn't know without at least trying to make an educated guess. That was good but he would have preferred it if she had done more research into where she would be conducting a lot of her work - not that it could be helped. She could have studied the planet for days and still missed some of either the newer or the older information about Christophsis he supposed.

"Before the war, yes."
he agreed, "I started the push for a shipyard of our own when the ISC was still young; before Corellia joined and before we had even expanded much beyond Naboo, Tatooine and Bothwuai. We needed a sword and shield and we lacked the forge to actually make them without paying over the odds - now we make almost all of our own capital ships here."

He let out a small sigh.

"When your career in politics is done, in many years time, you'll need things that you can hang your hat on. You'll need something that you can point to and declare to be yours in their entirety."

It was one of the ways to get through the fact that you were, ultimately, a cog in the machine. By the time you got to a position like his you were a very important cog - but a cog all the same. As they came in to land at the hanger bay, Carrick eyed the transport that they were here to see.

The example from his office was not just academic after all.

There was a man who appeared to be the captain, arguing with the trio of security that was currently holding them back from unloading their cargo. Sat in the transport still, Carrick reached into the central console and pulled out a blaster pistol and holster before handing it to Silvi.

"Put this on."
he instructed her, "It's extremely unlikely they would start anything but never go into a situation without the ability to end it on your terms, no matter what. You know how to shoot I presume?"

Something to put her hat on...?

She wanted to ask more. She was so far away from even thinking about retiring; and he wasn't that much older than her, she thought?

But when he handed her the blaster and holster, she didn't react beyond arching a brow, a learned tic from her mother, but accepted both nonetheless. She wouldn't mention her own hidden blaster, but instead strap the holster over her waist, giving it a tug for a proper fit.

Her father might not have been always there, but he made sure his daughter knew how to handle a blaster. She also checked the safety and the cartridge, just in case. Satisfied, she slipped it into the holster, falling in step with him and slightly behind, keeping a constant vigil.

"Point and squeeze, right?" she joked, but her features remained neutral. Only her eyes showed the betrayal of a glint of humor. But her eyes had already moved on his, squaring her shoulders so that the jacket only partially hid the blaster. No need to let them know she had her main one prepared just in case. She might not have been warned about Christophsis' warship production, but she heard enough of Carrick to know she had to be prepared in case things went sideways.

"Yeah, I know how to shoot."

Amused, Carrick didn't respond verbally but the small little smirk probably told her enough about whether or not he had gotten the joke, such as it was. Of course, he was her boss so he was going to ensure that there was a degree of separation there, a little aloofness that was required to be an effective boss in potentially dangerous situations.

Because, as much as this was a mostly controlled environment, Carrick wasn't entirely sure what their reaction would be to being suddenly pulled up by the most senior official in the ISC within several parsecs. Could be that their resistance just folded like a wet piece of paper but he wasn't going to bet on that.

History was full of people who had bet everything on shorter odds and ended up dead anyway.

"Good - remember to try and stun first if things start getting dicey."

Stunning was much less frowned upon than blasting pieces of people away just because they decided to get a little bit shirty. Opening the door to the transport, Carrick re-buttoned the middle button of his suit jacket and as he was doing so, he spoke to Silvi about her assignment.

"See if the crew will let you see the manifest, but expect them to resist the attempt."

It was, after all, beyond unorthodox for the Secretary of Defense to inspect a cargo ship.

But, then, he was bored and this wasn't just a cargo ship.

"Foreman, give your men a break."
he instructed the docking official who took one look at him before gesturing for his security to back off as Carrick stood in front of the captain, "Captain Valentine... there are easier ways to say you have information for me, that don't include messing up my logs."

As Carrick was speaking to the captain, Silvi would find the crew were mostly Corellians who seemed interested and not a little bit distracted by her presence.

At his smirk, she had known that she at least impacted as intended. Good, so he wasn't as chilly as he appeared, but still... she had an image to maintain, first as an intern, and as his assistant. When he mentioned using stun, she gave a slight tilt of her head.

"Of course, sir."

She would have to leave it at that; he seemed to trust her to get the manifest, and she would do her best to do exactly that. Keeping her head high, she would never let Carrick out of her sight. That Valentine person he was talking to gave her a strange feeling of deja vu; it was hard to tell, as they were helmeted. She could hear snatches of what he was saying, but not the entirety of it, and instead focused on what seemed to be the first mate of the ship.

"Mate... Alexios, was it?" she queried, brows drawing together. Holding the datapad to her chest, she didn't flinch away or shy when his eyes met hers squarely. She could hear the whispers of the other crew, and she could already tell by their glances what they were saying.

"...Morata's family... doctor's brat... spoiled little girl..."

She had heard it all before. She ignored the comments for now, still keeping Carrick in her peripheral vision while she stared down Alexios. "I would like the manifest, please." The man smirked, and she had an odd urge to suddenly back off as his arms squared over her chest.

"What would you do for that manifest, miss?" he spoke quietly, looming over her. But she forced herself to square her shoulders, lifting her chin up.

"I don't believe I requested." Her voice was cool, calm, but she was hoping that she wouldn't have to resort to violence as Carrick seemed to predict. Besides, Alexios' looming gave her the curious urge to push back. She had a job to do, and she would see it through.

Carrick, personally, didn't much care if she needed to kill someone in self-defence but the image of it would be awful. Unless she managed to find herself in some part of a warzone, he wouldn't think that the PR department would be able to do much to cover it up either. Still, he left her alone with the crew to see just how she would react to people below her in social standing - her mother had a reputation for being very difficult to work with and he wanted to see if it was inherited or if she had managed to avoid that Morata trait.

Instead he focused his own attention back on Valentine.

"Why Secretary Carrick! What a completely unexpected surprise!"

Carrick didn't so much as blink as he stared the Captain down with no hint of the inner amusement he was feeling at this point. Captain Valentine was one of his regular spies along the trading lanes so it earned the sassy Captain a little bit of leeway.

"Indeed."
he drawled before pushing on, "What news from the Corellian Run?"

Valentine blew some air between their teeth.

"Bad bit of business, that... locals are getting rowdy. REAL rowdy if you get what I mean."

Carrick raised an eyebrow.

"Rowdy enough to try something stupid?"

Captain Valentine shrugged helplessly.

"Corellians are a hardheaded bunch - we tend to need to learn the lesson the hard way and over multiple lessons. Of course someone is going to try something stupid. ESPECIALLY if the credits are good."

Carrick hummed.

"Is that why you've got a holdout pistol in your pocket? Or are you just happy to see me?"

The Captain in question grinned sheepishly but pulled the small pistol from their pocket, aimed squarely at Carrick's gut.

"It's not a hard transaction, Secretary. Give up the ships of the local defense forces to the Corellian Government and there's no need for this to get ugly."

Valentine was probably banking on the fact that he was so close to Carrick that a shot would impact him before he might be able to call on any help. No doubt the crew was likely going to try something with his new intern but Carrick was fairly confident this might not even be her first kidnapping attempt.

She couldn't really see what Carrick was up to, but for some reason, she felt like moving to his side would break the power struggle between herself and the first mate. And yet...

She was aware, vaguely, that some of the crew had begun fanning out a little. The scenario felt a little familiar... in fact, a little too familiar.

One of the many risks of having a famous parent was when others would try their hand at getting their grubby paws on the Morata family fortune, simply through a hostage situation. She had been taught by both parents how to get free of such situations; it mostly involved behaving unexpectedly, and yet playing along until weaknesses were exposed.

"Sir, please stop, you're making me uncomfortable," she said aloud, adjusting her jacket slightly and making as if to step back. Her palm brushed against Shiva as she made like she was brushing sweat from her hand out of anxiety; her personal handheld droid, who had been sitting peacefully inside her pocket. It would begin to record audio in case there were any hiccups later that would have to explain to the PR.

Alexios, in his turn, sighed, and rolled his eyes.

"I don't give a damn if you're the Secretary's bitch or President Thorne himself; I won't give you the manifest without Captain's orders. Now, get your ass onboard..." he made a step forward, and she hastily stepped back, acting as though she would flinch away, arm bent as though to protect her side. "Please sir, stop, you're really scaring me." In her sleeve, her other hand tightened around her own holdout pistol. They would clearly see the pistol holstered on her hip that the Secretary had given her, but she always had her backup set on stun, tucked away. She flicked her gaze towards Carrick once more; but with his body angled the way it was, she couldn't get a clear view of the Captain.

Not good.

If the Captain made a move, or the first mate, she would have to react. She had heard a rumor that Carrick was a Force User, and moreso, a Jedi. Hopefully those reflexes could get him out of harm's way by the time she would pull the stun trigger.

The first mate had to just come a step closer...

This wasn't the first time that someone had held him at blaster point but he had had the services of a Mandalorian woman at the time. There was something to be said about knowing that you had an armoured defender in your corner. Still, Carrick looked down at the blaster before looking back up at Valentine.

He shot the captain an unimpressed look.

"Oh no. Help."
he deadpanned in a drawl, "Whatever will I do?"

The captain seemed to be slightly annoyed a the sheer lack of concern that the former Jedi seemed to have for the situation, their smile twitching in place slightly as they jammed the blaster into his gut, harder. There was silence for a moment before Carrick raised an eyebrow and Valentine grunted in annoyance.

"Just give up the ships and I won't have to shoot you."

Carrick rolled his eyes.

"The trouble with a threat, Valentine, is that the person you're threatening needs to believe that there's a chance you might actually go ahead with it."

The captain paused.

"And? I have you at gunpoint."

Carrick snorted in amusement and turned around, leaving the Captain rushing after him with his blaster now against the secretary's back as the politician wandered closer to the ship.

"And you'll never shoot me - do you see the problem with your threat?"

The captain scowled.

"We'll kill your intern first then."

Carrick's other eyebrow raised.

"On her first day? Cold. Think your stooges of men can handle that?"

While Carrick was blithely walking with the Captain at his back, she glanced back at him, eyes wide.

But despite the aura of panic that seemed to emanate from his latest aide, Carrick would clearly see, from his uninterrupted vantage point, the raise of her brows, and the cock of her head.

Move aside so I can get a clearer shot, sir.

In truth, she wasn't afraid, merely annoyed. Who did they think they were to hold her boss at gunpoint? On their planet, no less?

So when the first mate reached for his blaster, she reacted much faster.

"Right, fuck this, let's put a hole in her---"

"AH!"

Acting like she was flinching out, she smoothly pulled out her holdout blaster from her sleeve, pointing it at the first mate. Her lips mouthed something at him, as she pulled the trigger.

Too slow.

The stun shot hit him squarely in the chest, and he folded. The other crew let out a surprised chorus as they flinched back, but as they scrambled for their blasters, she was already moving. Releasing her hand from her droid's record button, she reached for the other blaster, the one Carrick gave her as she proceeded to begin stunning more members of the crew, quickly pacing backwards to provide a harder target to hit and to keep them scrambling under the hail of fire.

With the second blaster free, she glanced towards Carrick, sighing. "Sir."

Shooting him would look terrible on her resume, after all. And from what she could recall, a Force User's reflexes were superior, but she wouldn't bank on that. It wouldn't be very long before she was making short work of the crew, but there was one last detail to solve.

If Carrick would move out of the way, she would take aim at the Captain. Otherwise, she'd have to move fast, getting in the Captain's blind spot in a rush in order to get a clearer shot. It all depended on what could happen in the span of a few seconds; it was Carrick's call, but time was running out and she'd have to move fast. A silent alarm should trigger the harbor security soon, but she wouldn't rely on them either. They were notorious for taking too long.

Professional training and best accolades for her marksmanship needn't be on her resume, after all, that was merely bragging.
