Hi all,

My name is Evan and I'm obviously a fan and I'm excited to work with others on writing good stories. I have some RP experience--used to write on FB back in '05 on their old Groups pages, then played on this site for a bit. I messed up on a thread, got impatient -- youth will do that -- didn't take criticism well, and left. Looking forward to not doing that again. I'd love to chat with anyone about anything but I'm going to post an introductory question.

Is balance the absence of evil from the natural....

Or is evil a natural component of balance.

Go...

Evil is an imbalance. The world is full of pain and suffering all on its own, it doesn't need our help. Anything man adds to that is merely piling needless misery on top.

It should be our directive to do whatever we can to lessen the suffering of others and help them grow as people. It takes relatively little effort to make a huge impact, either positive or negative. You get more out of it than you put in. So why not put in a good and let it blossom into a lot more goodness?

Think of it this way. You adopt a child and give them a warm, loving home to grow up in. How many puppies are you supposed to drown in order to create balance? Or is it that the puppies have nothing to do with it, and you've balanced the evil of their sad childhood by giving them comfort and love? In that case, why are you drowning puppies? Put the puppies down. No, slowly!

Okay, yuck, I'll go get a mop.

A rough analogy! But dead puppies are certainly illustrative. I agree with you. I think that the notion of one being able to be a gray Jedi flies in the face of this easily understood logic.

Evil is not a tool. It is an unacceptable intrusion into balance and should be eradicated at all costs. Even at the cost of one's emotions.

I guess it gets really dodgy if we allow for the Jedi to deny their own naturalness by removing emotion from it. Which is why I really like the new philosophy of "Emotion, YET knowledge" as opposed to "there is NO emotion..."

Thanks for contributing!

I've never agreed with killing one's emotions, and I never felt like that was a part of the original trilogy. Self-mastery doesn't require self-elimination if you can be disciplined.

I'm a big fan of Dresden Files because the main characters do what they do for deeply personal reasons, and their emotions give them strength. As Harry tells a fallen angel, even anger can be used for good; it's called passion.

And I dare you to find any Jedi who does half as much good from their stoicism as Michael does out of his bright, shining love.

I love this sentiment and agree wholeheartedly. The means and ends are one.
