"Hey Hans - does the Order still do those things? You know the Trials of Knights or whatever it was called?"

Crix was speaking into a com-link as he was currently laid down on his back, underneath a console that he didn't actually have any legal right to be touching. Legality wasn't something this place was actually very big on though considering the place was making droids. Specifically they were making droids that they didn't have patents for or licences to actually make the droids on behalf of those that did.

Hence why he was tweaking with the console while chatting to the Jedi Master.

"Think we could keep a few of the droids?"
he asked Hans hopefully, "I know they've got some issues with their core processors..."

Namely issues that saw the otherwise flawless copies bursting out into song at random intervals. Or the defects that had their heads literally exploding when they were asked literally any question (not even a paradox required).

"... but I can work on that. Just started that module actually but whatever - yeah, those trial-y things? I want them."

He honestly didn't think they were required anymore but he wanted them. Crix wanted to feel as though he had earned the rank both through his contributions to missions but also in growth when it came to skill and temperament. Those last two? Well testing seemed like the best way to make sure he was properly assessed.

Hannibal was- well, somewhere else, in an office records room of some kind trawling through the frankly poorly kept files. It was tedious as hell, and while he wasn't exactly inclined to deal with this kind of situation, the exploding droids and other errors were causing real problems for people. So he figured, why not?

His commlink buzzed and Crix's voice came through. Something to do! Excellent.

"The trials? Yeah, still a thing. There's the like, traditional ones, right? And then the uh, abridged versions based on personal experience." He paused a moment. "Mighta done a couple already, honestly."

He tip-tapped through some blueprints and couldn't quite help the incredulous expression on his face from what he saw. Most of the designs were sound and even had some improvements over the base models. Very impressive! But the manufacturing information itself combined with some messy software was just absolutely horrendous.

"Oh, uh. Yeah, sure, why not." There was a sound of thoughtful humming over the comms. "Two or three at most, maybe."

"Ah, and. Yeah, we can do that. Not gonna be easy, kid."

They still had the trials? Neat.

He'd honestly been worrying that the whole thing was something that only the Old Jedi Order did and, well, if Hans had an 'beserk button' topics? Well asking to potentially do things the same as the Old Jedi Order was as close to one as Crix had found. Also mocking the dead, for someone so eager to joke about everything, Hans had a thing about being respectful about the dead.

Even the ones who didn't deserve it.

"Not gonna be easy? Ha." he snorted in amusement as he pulled himself up from out under the console, "I know you've been dealing with your Projects, Hans, but what part of my time as a Jedi has ever been close to easy?"

Being allowed to keep some of the droids was awesome though, Crix could already see himself working on them in his spare time. Probably going to be battle-droids though so that was going to be a learning experience - but he reckoned he had to start somewhere.

"You think I could have one of those Spider Tank Droid things they got in the front yard?"

That was probably pushing his luck a bit far but he wanted one Force-damn it - it looked so cute! Of course that was the exact moment that some security guards started checking the area. Muttering a curse under his breath, Crix grabbed one of them from behind in a choke-hold even as he used the Force to jab his stun baton into the back of the other. Shushing the one he was using a blood choke on, Crix waited patiently for him to stop resisting before dragging the two of them under the console he had been slicing before.

"Hans, I've got the main gate control codes but..." he grimaced, "Had to take down two guards. We've probably got, what, five minutes tops before they need to call in? Also real talk - you know if Sevrin is single?"

Hans for the closest thing to a father/mentor figure he had in his life anymore so he was going to take the chance to ask for advice on the dating front where he could. Was it dating advice if he'd only really spent, like, half a day with the guy? Crush-advice, maybe. He was confident enough to try and flirt with the older man but he wanted to know if he was going to be some kind of Padawan homewrecker.

Crix did have a pretty solid point about things not being easy. The kid had been through a hell of a lot even before he joined and he just kept on moving along. He was a lot like his mother that way. Distantly he remembered the fire and defiance that'd characterized much of their time on Chandrilla, even in the noodle shop after the hospital. They'd gotten along poorly from the start, all things considered, but Hannibal respected her for the attitude she brought forward. He wondered idly how she was doing with everything that'd happened lately, frowning, and then shook his head a little to refocus himself.

"Yeah. Wouldn't call it easy, kid." He barked a short laugh. "Seriously though, a tank? Not plannin' on blowin' up anythin' important, are ya?" It wasn't a no but it was a 'I'll think about it' in Hans speak. He pulled his datapad from the console port, now with the data he needed, and stood from the chair.

Honestly the question about Sevrin worried him more than guards needing to be taken out. Crix had gotten good at dropping people quickly, kind of getting the Shadow training treatment with a personal touch when Hans was around. A chokehold was far from friendly but it did the job. Still better than burning limbs off, too.

"It's always somethin'," he grumbled over the comms, leaving the external office he was in to head over toward Crix. "Comin', let's be quick."

"Oh and uh. I seriously doubt he's taken."
Fun thoughts of a certain allegory back and forth of theirs were the reason for that. 'Course Sevrin could just be that openly flirtatious but that seemed out of character for the Sephi Jedi.

"Honestly just ask him. Throw in somethin' about his eyes, too."

If he'd wanted easy, he'd have stuck to being a student who only needed to get stressed out about finals and such. No, he'd chosen the Jedi path knowing it was going to be harder than he really had any idea of even at the time. It had tested him but he liked to think he'd come out the otherside a mixture of the same guy he'd always been and someone better.

He really wanted a spider tank droid.

"Important to the wrong kind of people." he admitted, entirely honest as he often was with Hans, "I'm not gonna blow up anything that's important to the people we like. Just maybe shoot some Sith's ride a few times for shraks and gigs, you know?"

Checking to make sure that the two guards would be fine where they were, even if they were out for hours (very unlikely), Crix made sure to lock them in the room. They would be fine when they woke up but he didn't want to increase the risk that he was going be discovered as he ran around doing what needed to be done.

"Got it Hans."
he responded, keeping his Master up to date on the mission even as they shot the shrak about 'less' important things, "You doubt he's taken? Seriously, have you met the guy? Dude probably even has that frightful old bat of a librarian in the Temple all over him..."

Was he projecting a little bit of his dislike of that same head librarian? Yes. Was he projecting his own concerns regarding his chances with Sevrin a little bit? Again, a resounding yes. Ugh, he preferred it when he was able to keep romanctic engagements to the kind of thing that involved flirt texts, pics, couple hours of fun and then maybe a repetition of the first three steps again down the line.

Romance?

Romance had never been a strong suit.

Romance was a dirty word because it reeked of 'commitment' and that was something he just didn't really have any experience with. He wasn't going to go sleeping around if he did, accidentally, walk backwards into a romance but still. It had never really been something that factored into his life before.

"... you know any of his hobbies?"
he asked as he ducked behind a crate to wait for Hans to arrive, leaving a folded up playing card atop the crate to serve as a marker for Hans, "So far I've got, hanging around on jungle planets and super special secret Shadow stuff I probably shouldn't know about."

His... feelings about the Jedi Shadows were complicated to say the least.

Hannibal seriously considered the idea of a tank droid being useful against Sith forces, followed right after by wondering if it'd fit inside his ship. Really that was the important question, wasn't it? A war materiel hauler the Spirit was certainly not, not to mention the other stuff it generally lugged around with it. It'd required some measuring.

"Bet they wouldn't see that comin'," he mused aloud over the open channel while he speed-walked out and around the building toward his padawan.

"If ya want to know his hobbies ya gotta talk to him about that stuff. Second hand ain't gonna do you any good." He did have an inkling about at least a hobby or two but the reason Crix was asking these questions wasn't exactly the most subtle thing ever. Hannibal didn't think pursuing the prim and proper Sephi was likely to go quickly if at all considering the details but experiencing this kind of thing was important for the young half-Zabrak.

Handling emotions well and healthily was key to how Hannibal taught so while he would guide him he wasn't planning on giving him an abundance of help with this one. Just some advice.

"Also," he said, appearing around the side of the card carrying crate, "If you're interested, be honest and fair to the both of you. That's like, how it works, alright?" Hannibal gave Crix a pat on the shoulder and headed to move further into the building at a quick but sneaky pace. He generally tended to prefer avoiding firefights if he could and if they moved fast maybe they could be in and out.

But y'know what they say about plans and contact, right?

"Right? Nobody expects the Spider Tank."

Well, Clone Wars veterans might have done but they'd all died out centuries ago at this point so basically no one expected the Spider Tank. The point was that Hans hadn't given him a "No" and that was all that he needed to start considering the mechanics of getting them a spider tank to bring home. Size was an issue but he was confident that he could make it fit.

... which he was glad he thought instead of saying aloud considering the rest of the conversation.

"Yeah yeah I figured I might have to."
he admitted with a small huff of air, "Just I'm not too great at... connecting with people I want to sleep with. I can flirt, sure, and if all I wanted to do was sleep with him I don't think I'd have anywhere near as many issues with the whole thing. I mean..."

He turned to Hannibal with a grin as his Master arrived before falling into step alongside him, no longer using the connection but speaking aloud quietly.

"No offence, Hans, but if it was just the prelude for a booty call I wouldn't be asking you for advice. But there might be feelings and shrak and that's your whole deal, not mine."

No his whole deal was in the way he likened everyone he sensed in the Force to a memory of his own life and drew conclusions from which memory it was. Weird? Yep. As useful as his Master's empathy? Not even slightly.

However...

"... spider droid tanks are apparently over in the left hanger."
he suggested with a hopeful grin, "They're even the IG-3001s... totally manageable size, right?"

Hannibal looked down at Crix with a look of amusement, one brow raising and that signature smirk plastered on his face. He'd deduced just fine there were some kind of feelings involved here and, frankly, that was why his advice was more vague. Feelings and attachment were complicated things for more ordinary folk, but for Jedi they were exponentially moreso. Romance was far from a sure thing and, as usual, Hannibal advocated learning, experiencing, and sorting through in some combination for emotions.

Turns out the way to handle empathy worked pretty well in general, if being a bit more difficult to get the hang of than the more orthodox methods.

"Yeah, I caught on to that," he commented as they moved into the building, "Search through them, meditate n' all that, and keep in mind especially that Sevrin's feelings are just as valid as yours, whatever they may be." Hannibal slipped around a corner to head toward the left hangar, walking more or less normally save for the nearly silent footsteps. More habit than needed in the empty complex, but still.

"My advice is, if you want to learn about him and get closer, it's best to do it without a third party poking things along. Also, be honest."

Another corner until the hangar. Hannibal looked around the fairly poorly kept compound with pursed lips and furrowed brows.

"And uh, maybe if we disassemble one? No way that whole thing's gonna fit."

Damn that smirk - he could always tell when his Master found something he was saying/doing to be amusing because of that damned expression. The fact that it was so at home on Hans' face, to him, just made him think that he was perpetually amused by something. Which, with this being Hannibal, was a very good possibility actually.

Ah Crix wasn't going to get much more out of it until they got more of the work done.

"Yeah I know, I know - wasn't going to try for the whole "If I can't have Senpai, no one can" thing you know."
he joked before pausing and turning to Hans, with a very scared expression, "Tell me I'm not giving off yandere vibes Hans - for real, you're my Master, you gotta tell me if I'm acting like that!"

Some things were not worth joking about.

He was beginning to get into the same habit as Hannibal, his footsteps near silent as they walked. Of course his was less developed so there was still a slight sound but nothing as bad as regular people. He rubbed at one of his horns with a sigh.

"Honesty... sounds great. And when he finds out that I'm some karked up kid he can run a mile... but it'll be his choice I guess."
he shook his head a little bit, "I think the IG-3001s have a maintenance mode where the legs detach? Lets find out boss."

Crix would push on ahead, using the Force to assist him with a leap across a large amount of the distance, landing almost silently as he kept an eye out for guards or workers as he approached a line-up of deactivated IG-3001s.

"Want that I should re-program one to boot up and blast this place apart once we leave?"

Crix was listened to while Hannibal looked around with all the energy and serious of a man going for a stroll, other than the quiet way he moved of course. His instincts were sharp and much more accurate than they'd been once upon a time even if the actual warnings tended to be just a bit ambiguous. The young Councilor relied on them to let him know of incoming danger but he still didn't entirely feel the need not to check out his environment. Just good practice.

"Kid, c'mon. 'Course I'd tell ya." He paused. "You're not. Just handin' out general advice as all. Attraction of any kind's a complicated thing to sort out but you've got a half decent head on your shoulders."

His padawan leapt forward and Hannibal joined him in the motion, landing well balanced and getting a good look of the chamber they were in while he was at it.

"We're all karked up somehow. People don't choose to be Jedi 'cause they've lived a safe and happy life." Naturally he'd said something along those lines before but that didn't make it less true or less worth repeating.

Emerald eyes looked over the tank droid with a critical eye, lips pursed and brows furrowed.

"That'd be funny but nah. Chance of collateral, people are morons. If ya can get it to aggressively disassemble the others, though..."

Well he'd have to take his Master's word on that but he was fairly confident that Hans would, indeed, tell him if he was being weird about it. If there was one thing he could count on Hans for above all else it was uncensored honesty. His dear old Master didn't believe in anything less and didn't accept anything less.

That Crix had never been able to lie to Hans anyway certainly helped with that from the padawan's side of things. He chuckled a little bit at the comment about how they were all karked up somehow. It was an old discussion between them at this point, one initially brought up by Crix when he'd been concerned going to therapy meant that he was 'karked up'.

It had been a short-lived phase before he, for lack of a better term, get the kark over himself.

"Well when the alternatives are a metaphorical closet and joining the red-blade murderhobos, I guess we're the option that makes sense."
he joked a little bit with a grin, "Even if we all get tarred with the same brush..."

The grin dimmed a little bit at that, his near arrest still being something of a sticking point for the young Jedi. Shaking it off a little bit, he took a deep breath as he eyed the tank droid for a moment. It was pretty big but he had a beginners knowledge of its systems already. Reaching out, he placed the palm of his hand against the cool metal of the droid.

"I can get it to do that but... I think it's gonna need to be something it does fairly quickly after I give the instruction."
he admitted to Hans, "If you good with that then we can use it for our escape."

Technometry was something that Crix had worked hard at since discovering it was even a thing and he was fairly confident that he could use it in this instance. Nothing big but he could spoof the system into thinking its latest orders were to destroy its fellow droids. If Hans was cool with the fact that it would immediately start trying to do just that.

Hannibal just sort of shrugged at the mention of the murderhobos and people confusing Sith and Jedi or whatever. While he wasn't exactly unconcerned about the issues that brought the Order it wasn't something they could fix overnight and certainly wasn't going to keep the young Councilor from doing what he did.

A hand patted encouraging against Crix's shoulder as his grin fell away a little.

"If everythin' was easy there wouldn't be Jedi, eh?"

Then he wandered off to look around the room full of droids. It would almost be an impressive collection of mechanical death machines if not for the fact that Hannibal knew they were constructed with sub-par software. Even if their parts still had value he doubted the chipsets were reliably recoverable, unfortunately, and even if they were of questionable quality it annoyed him that some bootleg factory was making autonomous tanks.

Like the galaxy needed more bullshit to deal with right now for kriff's sake.

"That'll work, set it up." In the meantime he found himself a new console to tap around with, plugging in his datapad and going to work at copying files before they probably joined the rest of the room in being reduced to scrap.

"Sure would be a shame if local authorities knew who was buyin' these things, eh?"

After the data was recovered and Crix finished his droid tweaking the two of them got an alert from Ego on their comms. The little probe droid was doing its job of recon and cheerfully informed the two Jedi there was a speeder truck fast approaching the complex with armed individuals on board.

"Right, time to go. You ready?"

If everything was easy there wouldn't need to be Jedi... truth. A truth that meant that Crix was certain to be in work until the day he died - if being a Jedi could even be called work since they didn't get paid. He was probably better off becoming a droid engineer if he wanted to earn credits but he'd known that going in he supposed.

He flashed Hans a grin instead of actually responding though - they both knew he understood where his Master was coming from. Though, ew, thinking about Hans as his Master still made him feel weird - the title just sounded off to the ears of young people. Kind of like how the word "daddy" was no longer innocent.

Right...

Right!

He had this!

Reaching out with the Force, he formed a connection to the tank droid. Taking a deep breath, he closed his eyes as he began to push his thoughts into the tank droid. Part of why the technique was difficult was because knowledge of the droid was kind of required... and you also had to push your thoughts into the droid in a format that it could understand.

Thankfully his mother had pushed him to stay in school and his droid engineering course meant that binary was basically a second language to him by this point. With a gasp of effort as he imprinted upon the droid not only the instructions but also the urgency to act upon them immediately, he wavered in place slightly as the tank droid spun around and began to acquire targeting solutions.

"01001101 01111001 00100000 01101000 01100101 01100001 01100100 00100000 01101001 01110011 00100000 01100001 00100000 01101100 01101001 01110100 01110100 01101100 01100101 00100000 01101100 01101001 01100111 01101000 01110100..."
he shook his head quickly and translated to Basic, "Alright... yeah just a little dizzy you know? What was that Ego was saying?"

As he was speaking, the droid began launching missiles into the rows of parked and deactivated droids.

Hannibal observed the last efforts of Crix very casually. The kid worked hard and had continued his studies as insisted and the end result was his ability to combine two different sets of knowledge in order to nudge the programming of a droid to do as he wanted. To be fair it was already programmed to blow things up, being a tank and all, but it was still impressive. He tossed a magnetically-adhering sphere to clunk onto the hull of the modified droid.

"Ego says," a loud boom resounded as several droids were struck by missiles across the hangar, "Time to go!" And time to go at was, the henchmen in the speeder truck apparently being rather alarmed by things exploding inside the building they'd been sent to check out. Hans quickly turned around and started running, making sure Crix was still somewhere behind him, and followed the hallways toward the rear of the complex opposite the main gate. Once the two Jedi reached a factory floor he reached a hand out toward a closed door, using the Force to form a scrambling magnetic field that unlocked the door and then slide it aside.

He ran out of the factory through it and then leapt over a chain link fence. Ego kept an eye on the thugs in the truck but, luckily, they didn't seem to be terribly interested in investigating anything while explosions were happening. Hannibal would stop a fair distance from the factory before turning around again, watching and listening for the sound of a tank droid going absolute ham to eventually quiet or for Ego to report morons approaching the chaos. Either way he'd detonate the ion charge to fry the droid as a safety measure.

"Hell of a field trip, eh? C'mon, we've got something else to do while we're out here."

And then he would begin the trudge back to his speeder and then, from there, his ship.

His head felt like it was splitting itself in two as his mind tried to process the fact that he had been thinking both as an organic and as a droid for a moment or two back there. It wasn't usually too bad if you eased into it but there was enough of a time constraint that he had pushed through it a bit harder than usual. Enough that he had slipped and tried speaking in binary for a moment back there.

Holding a hand to his head, he used some Healing on his temple to try and ease the oncoming headache.

"Yeah I'm coming..."
he grumbled a little bit, shaking his head to try and clear it of the numbers, "Bloody binary..."

Running after Hannibal wasn't a pleasant experience with the headache but Crix didn't let it slow him down. He was a Jedi, he couldn't run like an arthritic old man just because his head hurt. Keeping up with the Jedi Council Member, he grinned a little bit as he spotted the explosions over his shoulder.

"Couldn't have happened to a nicer set of people, right Hans?"

Ah but it was time they were off. Of course when Hans brought up something else, Crix just raised an eyebrow as he stared at his Master before shrugging and following him toward the speeder and the ship.

"Explosions and droids and espionage, oh my!"
he joked, "Yeah it's been fun but what else is on the docket Hans? Saving a princess or something?"

"Why they didn't just open a legit shop with that hardware is beyond me," he replied to the 'nice people' comment. Seriously, how would cheap knock-offs of tank droids not get someone's attention eventually? The two got back to the speeder and flew off, the ride relatively peaceful with some kind of lo-fi playing over the speakers as they passed over and through the city toward the Jedi's ship.

"Bit short on princesses, had somethin' else in mind. You might hate it though," he said with obvious amusement. Hannibal's training was never exactly easy but he didn't plan on sending Crix out into the galaxy without some kind of know-how of not dying. Hans had only almost died a few times and collected a bunch of new scars, so that had to speak to something, right? Yeah, probably.

Arcene returned to the ship and a command to the droids in the cockpit got it started up and moving to some other part of the planet while Hans took Crix to the dance floor-turned-training area. The Jedi Councilor turned on his heels and faced his Padawan with an appraising look.

"So. You've learned a lot, kid, done good stuff. But here's the deal. I'm gonna push you a bit, test what you've got." He paused, looking almost apologetic, but fairly serious for once. "Probably gonna suck. Sorry."

Why did the criminals decide to be criminals? Crix thought about it for a moment before kind of just shrugging a little bit and pulling an answer out of his arse. Specifically an answer that he had been told when he was back at school.

"I don't know man - the violence in holo-games these days? Unmotivated local teachers?"

He might hate it.

"... or we could get me a Prince if they're in stock, I'm not fussy."
he shot back before grimacing ever so slightly, "No? Yeah I didn't think so either but alright..."

Hans never did things he hated unless they were necessary things, the kind of thing that even Hans couldn't wiggle his way out of when he wasn't in the right move. As they made their way to the training area of the ship, Crix was beginning to get the impression that he knew what it was going to be and he was not wrong.

"Thanks, I hate it."
Crix quipped before he could help himself as he shook his entire body out for a moment, looking to force himself to be more energetic after his trick with the droid, "Alright... this gonna be what I think it's gonna be, Hans?"

If it was?

He'd never beaten Hans in combat before.

The only time Crix had ever even really thought about it before was in the splintered vision of the future he'd seen. Where Hans had turned on the Jedi and Crix was the last one who had a shot at beating him... so he'd cheated.

Gods, Force and every Corellian hell but he wasn't going to be trying that method.

Hannibal chuckled a bit at the 'prince' comment but had no further comment of his own for the moment. What was coming up certainly wasn't going to be terribly fun for either of the two Jedi but he believed it was necessary in the end, all jokes aside.

Crix's quip quickly got another chuckle out of the councilor and he sort of just shrugged a little at it. Unfortunately this test wasn't exactly meant to be 'fair' but it was meant to push the padawan. Things out in the galaxy were rarely fair and even after all, and if another administered this particular trial Hannibal wouldn't be as capable of forming a proper opinion on it. At least not in his opinion.

"I'm afraid so, Crix."

There was a sudden and discernable shift in his demeanor, his expression evening out and and a subtle chill settling in the air around him, in the Force. A moment later Sol's lightsaber was pulled from his belt, ignited, and swung directly toward the padawan's waist from a side-face stance, as if to bisect. Bright green eyes were chilly and focused, the councilor in a state of focus he didn't administer training in under most circumstances.

The lightsaber was also set to training mode at the moment, of course. Safety first.

Hans was working himself up to something, Crix could tell from his mannerisms. The fact that he was quiet would have triggered even those who didn't know him very well but Crix had hung around the man long enough to recognize certain patterns of behavior. He was quiet but he was specifically not speaking and he was avoiding looking directly into Crix's eyes for the time being.

He knew it as the kind of micro-behaviors that only a Padawan really knew about a Master. The kind of micro-behaviors where Hans was getting himself ready to do something he might have preferred to not do... but he knew had to be done. It was this change in behavior that got Crix to call his lightsaber to his right hand.

A flick to training mode...

"Then lets get dancing... Master."

... and they were off.

Igniting his blade as Hannibal called his own lightsaber to his hand, Crix took a step back and angled the tip of his lightsaber down. Using the extra space he blocked Hannibal's opening slash at his waist, batting his blade against Hannibal's to push his Master's blade away from his body. Crix used this as a chance to take another step back and to his left slightly, circling Hans but keeping the tip of his blade pointed slightly down in a defensive Makashi stance.

He didn't know how his Master was going to play this bout but Crix wanted to make sure he could guage it and that meant not throwing himself in straight away. Patience was supposed to be a virtue, right?

Crix parried the quick cut and circled, backing up, and Hannibal followed right along to match and stay on-line. His wrist and elbow turned to repurpose the deflection's momentum intp a tight circle and sharply thrust upward toward the padawan's chest, retracting his arm immediately afterwards.

The Master's footwork was practiced and precise, working constantly to keep himself in his own optimum range using his greater reach. Each cut or thrust kept his hilt in front of him so he could guard, his advance relentless and his retreats quick. It was similar to Makashi but far more mixed, the aggressive Form X he personally chose to practice. Crix had of course been told at some point he'd originally learned it out of stubbornness and spite.

It also meant Crix should know to watch Hannibal's off-hand and feet. During a high exchange a short booted kick to one of the Zabrak's shins would immediately snap out, the Master steadily closing in and shifting his style to CQC. His expression never shifed from that sense of icy calm.
