That, boys is the German Iron Cross, awarded to those who show true valor and one of the highest military awards possible that any one of you can earn. If you can live long enough to earn it. The Iron Cross more than symbolizes your bravery and actions beyond the call of duty: girls will gaze at you lovingly, men will tip their hats off for you and pay for you beer! "That sounds great!" you say. Well, it is.

"But Herr Hauptmann, how do I earn this Iron Cross?" You ask? Head down to your local recruitment center, take this sheet of paper and fill in your details. From there, it's a one way trip to awards, medals and to become the most respected person in your community! What else are you waiting for? Hear your Fatherland calling out for you to pick up your arms! Become a soldier, make your country proud and become more than man. . .become an Ubermensch!*

*Army experience may change during real life combat, the Wehrmacht does not take any responsibility for any deaths or injuries sustained in the line of duty. **

**This is an ESRB Joke.

Men of the 1st Platoon

1st Platoon, 3rd Company, I Battalion, 7th Mechanized Rifle Regiment, 7th Panzer Division.

Roles Available: Rifleman
Roster:
  • Platoon Commander - Leutnant Leo Oestrovsky (@Tristar)
  • Rifleman - Grenadier Moeshe Segal (@Slamdingo)
  • Rifleman - Grenadier Karsten Elias Bachmann (@Elijah Brockway)
  • Rifleman - Grenadier Alfred Bäumer (@Chask274)
  • Rifleman - Grenadier Elias Bäumer (@Jinan B)
  • Rifleman - Grenadier Wilhelm Fuchsbauer (@Oncaro)

Now, the reason why the only available starting roles are rifleman is to provide the players with a sense of progression. Roles, like ranks will be doled out to any player's characters who perform and meet certain criterias in the upcoming combat thread. What does this mean? This means you have to make poor Hans work for that sweet machinegunner's role, or maybe even become a squad leader. Later on as the RP progresses, as each person's character sits down together remembers how everyone first began as fresh faced riflemen now looks around and sees how the skinny kid leads a squad, the slow one carries the machine gun- that in itself, I will argue is infinitely more satisfying than simply having written out backstory for their character.

And given that this is a war, do not be afraid to have your character die mid way through the RP. This is war: veterans die just as quick as a fresh faced private who just dropped in as a replacement. Because of this, you are allowed to make another character on the go (writing a small biography if possible) and continue from there as a replacement, fresh faced or even another existing member of another squad.

Another thing to note is equipment distribution. Because even as late as 1945, not everybody gets cool weapons immediately: either you earn them, or in this scenario, will be given via random draw. This is to avoid players suddenly claiming their characters have specialized weapons or gear not readily available to them. 2 random players will be given a semiautomatic rifle (G43 or G41, up to the player), one player gets the riflegrenade cup attachment and another with the squad's panzerfaust.

We role play human beings caught up in service to their country, not the weapons they are armed with.

As a side note, not everyone may be well versed with the tactical philosophies of the German squad, or even mannerisms/proper organizations. Do not despair, for there are numerous sites which can help you, such as Der Erste Zug and Alan Hamby for those who are unsure how the rank progression system works.[/fancybox2]

Name: Leo Oestrovsky
Age: 26
Rank: Leutnant (2nd Lieutenant)
Role: Platoon Commanding Officer.
DOB: 5th May 1919
Height: 6' (1.82m)
Weight: 149lbs (68 Kilograms)

Province: Baden-Württenberg

Face Claim: Volker Bruch

Personality: Wary of his surroundings, Leo's upbringing in the urban quarters of America during the Great Depression taught the child several important lessons in life: namely, to never start of an introduction by saying that he was from Germany, as he would learn after several scuffles from the big kids on the block. But what stuck with him all these years was that the most honest force in the world was one's intuition. Gut instinct, crudely termed, was almost always right and if it wasn't, generally still benefited him more than it gave him trouble. Keep his head down, avoid looking at anyone funny in the eye, that was the best way to avoid trouble in the neighbourhood.

Growing up with poverty and discrimination as his closest friends, it is to no surprise that Leo is also slow to trust and often a little withdrawn. Empathy is not his strong suit, but logical, rationality and the a strong value of life is: Though he finds killing another human being distasteful, he understands that the value of his men is worth more than the value of the enemy, even if both were human beings in the end. Despite his shortcomings, Leo is currently engaged to a childhood sweetheart, defying all social expectations of himself. Loyal and faithful, he writes home often, and treasures the replies with faint sentimentality.

As a leader Leo is quick to adapt and less fastidious, a long lasting effect from rubbing shoulders with Americans for too long. Unafraid to get his hands dirty, and quite often criticizes German infantry when taking fire, noting them as "Far too cautious, with little dare to take risks.", showing more American influence than the methodical German mindset. His lack of patience coupled with an aggressive mindset leads to some officers viewing him with distrust, convinced that he would amount to nothing more than another statistic. Out of spite, Leo vows to outlive his critics.

Backstory: Born a year after Imperial Germany had lost the Great War, Leo's earliest memories were of desolate streets, starving adults and bleak times. In these dark moments, he met his future fiance, Ewa Hürst whom he developed a close friendship with. When his parents saw better opportunities overseas, the two children somehow managed to maintain contact over the years even as Ewa had repeatedly changed addresses. As for Leo, he would soon find himself stranded in a new, foreign place that declared itself 'Land of the Free'. If freedom had entailed the strong sense of discrimination and poverty that came with it, then America did not fail to disappoint.

His new home was the ghettos, where plenty of other immigrants resided, fooled by the glistening brochures. Leo's father Desmond soon found work in an automotive factory, assembling engines for long hours that took its toll on him. Zofia Oestrovsky meanwhile found work as a part-time cleaning lady, all in an effort to put her son through education. And so Leo entered a public school mostly dominated by immigrants as well- he became fluent in Italian, came to appreciate English (though with difficulties pronouncing certain words) and even a smattering of Hungarian. The effort of learning these languages certainly helped ease his assimilation with American society, even amidst the bullying.

Then the Great Depression struck, and very soon what was already a painful life took a turn for the worse: jobs virtually became nonexistent, workers were laid off and money, already hard to come by, was slowly leaving them bit by bit. Two years later as he turned fiftenn, the years of stress finally caught up with Desmond Oestrovksy, who succumbed to a severe stroke. Half paralyzed, the sole breadwinner of the Oestrovsky couldn't work, let alone find work. As situations became worse, Zofia's brother offered to take Leo in as an apprentice over in Switzerland where he could learn a trade and potentially find better employment. With no other options left, Leo returned to mainland Europe.

Under his uncle's mentoring he learned how to craft watches, to delicately work the minute mechanisms with loving precision. He continued to stay with his uncle for four more years as his assistant. He learned the principles of book keeping and small time business practices, but could not find any interest in continuing the business. So in 1939 at the age of 20 he returned to Germany, where local economy had started to bloom. Demand for labourers were high and Leo found no shortage of jobs which shocked him. In one of his letters back home he wrote,:

"Had Father not left for America, had he been patient and withstood the test of time. . .perhaps we would not have to taste the bitterness of poverty."

He spent three years as a furniture salesman, building up his savings for his own house when tragedy struck: a letter from his mother arrived one day, bringing dire news. Desmond had passed away. Soon the young man had to use up his savings for the funeral, staying over with his mother as she grieved for her lost love. As loathe as she was at the idea of leaving her husband's grave, Zofia longed for her home country and finally agreed to return back home to Germany at Leo's insistence. She was left at her relative's house, more spacious than his single room apartment in the city center of Berlin.

A year later, after spending his whole life exchanging letters with his childhood friend, Leo officially courted Ewa who more than graciously accepted. It was the one shining moment in his life and together both lovers cherished their time together. Then on the dawn of 1945, just as Leo had thought about proposing to his partner, the Great Fuhrer had been assassinated. A national day of mourning passed and Ewa's parents who were ardent supporter of the Man who Revived Germany were distressed. While Ewa left to spend some time with her family, Leo faced mounting pressure from his colleagues to join the army as a wave of nationalism traveled across the country.

As each day passed and more and more of his coworkers joined the army, Leo could no longer ignore the call for arms. Spending a day with his girlfriend, he proposed to her, and promised to marry after his service in the military. His fears of rejection were for naught, but then came the fear of living through service. Pursuing an officer's commission as he thought it was safer, Leo endured his extensive-20-week and was assigned to the 7th Panzer Division after showing a knack for aggressive tactics as a platoon leader of a Panzergrenadier regiment. His assignment came just in time for the Invasion of Poland, and now in charge of over 50 men he finds the pressure of command slowly beginning to mount. [/fancybox2]

Name: Moeshe Segal
Age: 23 years old
Rank: Grenadier
Role: Rifleman
DOB: October 21st, 1921
Height: 6' 5"
Weight: 227lbs

Province: Düsseldorf

Faceclaim: Til Schweiger

Personality:
Moeshe is soft-spoken and quiet for his size. For a fellow so much taller than the average where he lives, it seems like he's perfectly happy to be quiet and unobtrusive . . . . as if that were possible. He prefers the quiet things in life like camping at night, taking a relaxing swim in a creek, or other rather 'typical' things for a country-born man such as himself. He's adverse to violence for its sake and would much prefer to talk things out before they might come to blows. His upbringing has given him a rather simplistic view on the world that doesn't have much room for debating the finer points of good and evil or just how one might balance an economy to aid those who are less well-off, more heavily veiled lewd jokes will tend to fly right over his head, and he'll never voluntarily hit a lady. He lives by simple rules and judges things by his gut, and so far those have done him just fine till now.

Moeshe is the most at home working with his hands and out in the wild. The first thing he ever drove was a tractor when he was twelve and he's never been one of the cities. He can navigate by the stars, hunt wild game and forage if he has to, and he knows how to 'rough it' out in the wild for days. In big cities his hair starts to stand up on the back of his neck and he begins to feel penned in and trapped. But at the same time he won't ever complain about hard work or trying circumstances and he isn't the kind of man to let fear - or any other emotion - show itself very much outwardly.

Backstory:
Born three years after the fabled 'Great War' drew to a close, Moeshe was the eldest of seven children. His father was a veteran of the Great War who had been a lumberjack both before and after the war, while his mother had been a German-born Jew who spent much of her time in his childhood chasing after and trying to corral all the children together in one place. For living in such a densely packed province of Germany, they lived rather out into the country as the nature of their father's work necessitated, but they weren't the only family who lived so close to the logging camp so his childhood wasn't devoid of friends beyond his family or anything like that. He played hand-ball and tag wit his peers in early years when helping his father or mother, or his schooling, took his time. As he grew older he fallowed his parents' patriotic ideals to join the local chapter of the Nazi Youth as part of his community service. Early life even with economic hardships was smooth enough with the 'recession-proof' nature of his father's work meaning that even though funds grew tight they always had something by their standards until the economy slowly began to pick itself back up.

A few years passed by after that and as he grew older, and taller and stockier, with the economy booming once again Moeshe found plentiful work joining his father and other men in the logging camp. Summer and fall were spent climbing and cutting, winter was spent with his family, and spring was spent re-planting for years ahead. While Moeshe didn't seem to have anybody who stole his heart and attention his sisters all began to have sweethearts of their own as they grew older, and his younger brothers began pining after local girls. Moeshe? Moeshe cut trees and camped out in the woods. That was a life just fine enough for him: no worries of pursuing a college education or a wife or anything else. He had made fast friends among men who had once been mentors in his youth and he saw no reason to want to change or disrupt any of that. But then 1945 came and with it the 'Great Fuhrer' was violently assassinated. As the nation mourned the loss, word came that it had been a plot executed by a French government that had grown fearful of Germany's reorganizing and growth. A call came for all those who loved their families and country to assemble together against this foreign enemy.

The next day the logging camp had grown rather empty. Every able-bodied young man of age, to include Moeshe, had headed for the nearest recruitment office. Some had felt their calling was in the Luftwaffe or the Kriegsmarine, but for Moeshe he knew his best place was in the Heer. He volunteered and it wasn't long before the young man was sent through the rigorous training to become a Panzergrenadier.

Name: Karsten Elias Bachmann
Age: 19 years old
Rank: Grenadier
Role: Rifleman
DOB: December 13, 1925
Height: 5'8.625"
Weight: 147lbs
Province: Lower Saxony
Appearance: Karsten is fairly short and scrawny, especially compared to some other members of his platoon (such as Moeshe). His small size, however, doesn't mean he's weak or anything like that - he's just a fairly condensed package of hidden strength that doesn't make much sense given the lack of prominent musculature on his frame. Not that that matters much, because if needed, he can still carry anything (and anyone) he's asked to. His head is somewhat larger than average, as are his green eyes; his face is fairly round and topped with a head of dark brown hair, and all those features are complemented by a somewhat incongruous bass voice that resonates out of Karsten's (small and entirely unassuming) chest.
Personality: Most of the time, Karsten is relatively quiet, and doesn't interact with his overall platoon much beyond the basic interactions they'll have together; for that reason he can be seen as a bit of a loner amongst most of them, although this is mainly due to his natural introversion and his shyness. Amongst those members of the group that he has grown comfortable around, however, he is quite a bit more talkative and open, and, depending on his mood at the time, can only be described as 'cuddly.' He also generally cares quite a bit for the people of the platoon and will often go out of his way to help them/take care of them, depending on which he decides is necessary at the time. In his outlook on the way life normally progresses - both in peace and in war - he takes a cue from stoic philosophy, and generally just goes along with whatever happens in life and tries to make the best out of every situation...such as being drafted into the Heer.
Biography: Karsten is a musician who grew up in Schneverdingen, a town in the Lüneburg Heath. It was there that he attended his schooling as a boy and young(er) man, before eventually deciding that he wanted to go for a career in singing, making use of his voice; however, this plan ended up not coming to fruition as, soon after he was ready to move on to study singing more focusedly he ended up getting drafted into the army, which is where he learned that he doesn't speak Deutsch all that well compared to his more native Nedderdüütsch. Some of his platoon mates have made fun of him for "talking like some poor Saxon farm boy" rather than a proper, educated German...to which Karsten often tells them "Leck mich im arsch," accompanied by a rude gesture.

Alfred Bäumer

James-Phelps-oliver-and-james-phelps-24507507-527-794.jpg

General Information
Age: 20
Rank: Grenadier
Role: Rifleman
Date Of Birth: May 25, 1925
Height: 6' 3"
Weight: 190 lbs.
Province: Berlin
General Appearance: Alfred is relatively tall and lanky, and has average muscle definition. He tends to keep his hair relatively short and neat, and always does his best to keep his clothing in presentable condition (doubly so now that he's in the army).

Faceclaim: James Phelps

Personality: Compared to his twin brother Elias, Alfred is more outgoing and extroverted. Talkative and energetic, he'll be the first to crack a joke or otherwise make light of a situation when appropriate. This proved to cause issues for him during training, where he had trouble shutting up and following directions, although this has mostly been remedied by now. Mostly.

In his interactions with others, Alfred is kind and cheerful, always willing to help out and try to make friends. He also cares for his brother deeply, and is quite protective of him at times.

History
Alfred grew up alongside his brother Elias in the outskirts of Berlin under the care of two loving parents. Both his mother and his father worked hard to be able to provide for them. This became more difficult around the time when the two brothers turned 4 years old, when the American stock exchange and economy crashed, causing the already poor German economy to suffer even more.

When Hitler came to power and began to turn the economy around, Alfred was happy to note that his family's quality of life improved greatly, and he attributed this to the Führer. When Hitler was assassinated, Alfred was angered greatly, and enlisted alongside his brother to become a Panzergrenadier in the army.

General Information
Age: 20
Rank: Grenadier
Role: Rifleman
Gender: Male
Province: Berlin
Date Of Birth: 25th May, 1925
Faceclaim: Oliver Phelps

Physical Features:
  • Head/Face: Elias possesses a long narrow nose, somewhat thin lips which are most likely to be found forming a straight face as opposed to a smile, and dark brown eyes. His hair is kept short and is a dark brown like his eyes.
  • Body: Elias is a somewhat tall man, standing at 6'3". While his height makes him as tall or taller than most of his contemporaries, he has a slim figure, and weighs only 185 pounds.
Personality: Elias stands in cool contrast to his brother Alfred. Where Alfred is open, outgoing, and energetic, Elias is introverted, stoic and bookish. His serious manner served him well during training, where he was said to be "as emotional as he was troublesome, not at all."

If one is able to get underneath the man's exterior, however, they would find a heart as kind as his brother's, as well as a man who is willing to do whatever it takes to help his brother and his friends.

History
Elias grew up alongside his brother Alfred in the outskirts of Berlin under the care of two loving parents. Both his mother and his father worked hard to be able to provide for them. Name: Wilhelm Fuchsbauer

Age: 18

Rank: Grenadier

Role: Rifleman

DOB: March 14, 1927

Height: 6'1"

Weight: 136 lbs

Province: Köln-Aachen

Appearance: Wilhelm is a relatively tall young man with dark brown hair and matching eyes. He's been called handsome by several women in his life, but he doesn't really see it when he looks at himself. His strength level is a little above-average due to having hefted stacks of (usually heavy) books since he was a boy, and it shows when he carries crates of supplies without much complaint, so long as they can be hefted around by a lone person.

Personality: As a recently-enlisted man in the Wehrmacht, Wilhelm has yet to experience the real stresses of combat and is sure of himself in a manner that borders on overconfidence at times. Outside of this, the young man is surprisingly soft-spoken and polite in many situations, especially towards women, and wants only to serve his country, find a good woman to be his wife, and have healthy children and live a good life. Due to being raised with a family that sold books, Wilhelm is quite literate and has read books from a number of genres and countries. It also gave him a rather nuanced perspective on history and warfare that was helped along by his father's war stories. But perhaps above all else, Wilhelm holds a deep love for his parents, siblings, and cousin Anna that is always in the back of his mind: Though Germany may have struck first at Poland, in his mind, he isn't doing this to defend his country, he's doing it primarily to protect his loved ones, come Hell or high water.

Backstory: Wilhelm Fuchsbauer was born on March 14, 1927 in Aachen, to Leonard Fuchsbauer, a bookshop owner whom had in his youth taken up arms in the Great War for the German Empire, and Eva Jacobs, a Belgian whom had immigrated a few years before Wilhelm's birth and had taken a job at the Fuchsbauer family bookstore, then had wed her employer after a year of courtship.

The earliest memories Wilhelm had were of Belgian troops patrolling the streets (including, unknown to him, his uncle Arno), but those troops had left shortly thereafter, and Wilhelm grew up in the ancient German city in relative peace. In 1933, when Wilhelm was six years old, Adolf Hitler came into power as the Chancellor of Germany, and brought the nation as a whole out of the Great Depression throughout the 1930s, as well as built up the nation's defanged military and remilitarized the Rhineland, something Leonard privately criticized once German troops entered Aachen.

"I want you to listen to me very carefully, Wilhelm," Leonard told the boy one night in late 1936, "I love my country, but I fear that one day Germany may go to war again. And it may end as well as the last time."

With these words in mind, as well as his father's war stories that were in equal measure both captivating and sobering, Wilhelm grew up in a slightly more aloof manner than his fellows, with relatively few friends, and became quite close with his second cousin Anna, who was very close to him in both age and interest in things such as books, history, and film, all while he cared for his younger siblings Siegfried and Carolin after school. In all, he looked to be setting up for a stable, happy, if possibly boring life.

But then a bomb shattered those thoughts, and a nation in mourning soon became an enraged lion, lashing out and eager to kill those around it. The draft was called, and Wilhelm was required to answer. Bidding his beloved parents, siblings, and cousin goodbye, the young man set off to serve his country with a grim determination, becoming a Panzergrenadier.

And his life was soon to become a lot less boring.

@Caleb Richardson Approved! For now you're a member of third squad as a simple rifleman, but once the invasion of poland is over you'll be shuffled to 1st squad. If you also have a skype address, PM it to me so I can add you into our group chat.

@soed it is very much ongoing, although at the moment participants are currently in the festive mood so it will be at least a couple days before I can whip some goddamn life into these fools so yeah, go ahead!

EDIT: However much like @Caleb Richardson your character will at the moment be a member of Third squad, as a grenadier with basic rifles. Once the Invasion of Poland is over, expect to be reshuffled into 1st squad.

:D
