Black Kashyyykian dirt dug into her toenails. History lived here. Way back, the Sith space weapon had rained pure hell on this planet. Now, that steady glow of orange was replaced by fields of flowers and rays of heavenly light, sprucing up the area postcard-style. Jade the Jedi Exile was in good spirits when she began today’s Community Service Assignment. Her task: water all the blue flowers by sundown. In a field of native Kashyyykian undergrowth plus 10,000 red-lavender-blue-gold-white flower plots. Blue flowers in the center. This meant Jade mad-dashing between orchidferns and needle blossoms, hopscotching over hungry roots and exotic roses to bucket-water all the flowers all while shoeless.

She imagined this was some demented game the Wookiees played. Apparently, they expected her to use secret-Jedi-force-powers to hover around as bumblebees do, not squashing plants or petals, only tending to the super special blue flowers. Winged Jade. Bee Jade. Laughing Jade. Laughed at Jade. Surely a mechanized agricultural technology existed to mass-plant flowers, lightsabers, candy canes, whatever. Except this was a punishment. It should be hard. She wiped the sweat off her neck and got to work.

The Sith strike on the planet from space meant hitting a great range of territory. A lot of this territory still lay unassessed and unappraised, the damage undefined, at least by the living. “Ow Ow Ow, –” stumbled Jade, holding her heel. Two Wookiees on a fence doubled over in laughter watching her. Jade was debating the complex Jedi morality of sticking her tongue out at them when she nearly tripped in a hole. “The hell?”

She knelt to steady herself. It was then the girl who always had something to say was at a loss for words. Jade had stepped into the hollowed-out gut of a long-dead body. The calcified form lay six inches down, the brittle soil wrapping the body crumbling away. Jade stared into the abyss, into the hollowed eyes and sealed lips that reminded her of some sleeping ceramic emperor.

Bursting back five feet but unable to peel her eyes away. At last, the former Jedi raised her hand in a helpless schoolgirl way, crying out to all nearby. But drawn to the body like a kid to a friend’s dead bug collection, she inched forward, took a stick, and poked into it. The texture was stiff and crunchy. She bit the inside of her cheek and silently cursed. After the longest ten seconds, she plucked a handful of blue flowers and placed them on the dead Wookiee’s caved-in chest.

Hera was on Kashyyyk. The redheaded Jedi Knight had never thought to visit the homeworld of the Wookiees before, in truth she was a little afraid of the world. It was a warm, humid planet, it had to be for all the trees growing on it. Hera had been afraid that her physiology would be incompatible with the climate. Thankfully, such concerns were misplaced. The climate was surprisingly mild nearly everywhere she visited, mild enough that she could continue wearing her green armor beneath her Jedi's cloak.

Why was Hera on Kashyyyk? Hadn't the Justicar never even thought to visit the homeworld of the Wookiees before? Right, there was a definite reason she came here. A young Padawan named Jade Hart was supposedly serving community service out here. A Padawan serving community service with no master, neither during her time nor set up for after her time. She found that unacceptable and wanted to meet this girl to see if the two of them could work together.

'What was it that the padawan was supposed to be doing today? Watering a few thousand flowers or something, right?' Hera thought. 'What a stupid task. How does that teach them anything?' She continued to wonder until the laughter of a few Wookiees caught her attention. Their laughter was directed towards a smaller human woman moving through the field. Was that Jade? A sudden cry from her caused Hera to begin rushing her way, bringing the Knight to her position within a minute.

Catching her breath, Hera halted as she came upon both the woman and the body. Pausing for a second, Hera put a hand on the woman's shoulder and asked, "Are you ok?"

Jade didn't even hear the woman approach. When Hera put hands on her, her eyes blanked, her throat dried. She wobbled and trembled but stayed rooted. Gripping her neck she started struggling against something, maybe her breakfast of orange spiky peppers or maybe the winds of destiny for all anyone knew. With her quivering lips and pale cheeks, she finally turned to look at Hera. Not necessarily at her eyes or face, but through her face and out the back of her skull. Jade had checked out.

Then something pulled her back. Maybe it was her recent conversation with Dash or Brutus, but she swallowed hard and stamped her feet a few times, flattening some daisies but grounding her soul. A cool wind blew by and the world resumed its turning.

"I swear I found him like that. I didn't do it," said Jade, pointing at the unburied body. "It wasn't me. Please believe me. I maybe stepped on a few flowers. Ok sorry, but I didn't mean to. Really. I'm telling the truth," speaking fast as if her words could fill the hole.

Hera watched the young woman snap away, stamping her foot and immediately attempting to absolve herself of guilt before the Knight. Of course, Hera simply gave Jade a slightly confused look. The corpse was in a great stage of decomposition, parts of it hardened into calcified masses that would crack at the slightest touch. Suspecting Jade of wrongdoing wasn't even a thought in the Justicar's head.

Looking down at the corpse, Hera spoke to Jade, "I can see that the poor thing has been dead a while, but even if it wasn't, I would still believe you. Are you Jade? I'm Knight Hera. Come, help me." At that command, Hera stepped back from the body and began to sway her arms back and forth.

Her fingers, hands, and arms flowed like the wind. She rocked back and forth, reaching behind herself, turning, then reaching forward. The Force flowed through her like the cool waters of an ancient stream, reaching into the earth and pulling forth flower and filth alike. The Jedi Knight was digging a grave, pulling earth from beneath the corpse and depositing it on the other side of the open hole.

Slowly, the body drifted further and further down as the hole became deeper and deeper. Hera moved slowly, expecting Jade to attempt to copy her movements, to attempt to use the Force to help.

Jade watched Hera flow. At first, the girl seemed confused. She had never seen someone move as Hera did. It looked like an interpretive dance, except that the ground shuffled to the dance's rhythm. Before Jade's very eyes, this crazy woman was burying a corpse with the force. It seemed unbelievable to her, to so strongly connect the force with death. But this woman was no Sith.

Jade sighed. She held out her arms and tried to summon the force. A clump of dirt fell into the hole. She smiled. A handful of orchidferns snapped in two. She frowned. The effects of her force-stripping still lingered. So she started mimicking Hera by rocking, shaking back and forth. Throwing her hands to the air and closing her eyes a breeze circled around her. Then it died. Jade opened her eyes.

"It's not the same. Not since the force was stripped from me. Since I got it back it's just not the same."

Hera's green eyes, locked behind a pair of blackened goggles, closed as she worked. She could sense the Padawan attempt to copy and move with the Knight, but her success was limited. At the first fail, it seemed that Jade gave up as well. Though Jade seemed to keep on copying Hera's motions as if the act alone was what connected her to the world around her. That much effort Hera was still glad for.

More and more dirt moved, slowly but surely, as Jade spoke. Hera nodded and responded quietly, "Jade, you had a great and traumatic event occur to you. A wound so deep won't heal in an afternoon, you must keep working, and keep putting in the effort. Your connection to the Force is still there. You must nurture it like a flower if you wish for it to blossom again." Stopping for a moment, Hera moved closer to Jade.

Offering out her hands, she spoke "May I?" and attempted to gently grasp Jade's hands. If Jade allowed Hera, then she would gently push the energies of the Force through first Hera's own body, then Jade's, then into the earth to once more move the ground. "Feel the ground, how it facilities the growth of new life. Feel the dirt move behind your fingers, ready to consume this poor soul to feed the new life. The Wookiee beneath us may be gone now, but his energy isn't. The Force that lived in him still lives all around us. Don't turn away from it."

Jade let Hera hold her hands like a little girl, and the force flowed through them both. It felt warm, like someone was piping pure bubblebath water into her being. She closed her eyes and imagined herself back at Yavin IV, the comfort and safety of Master Silex, breathing, slow, steady, floating in the air. This was but another home. This was but another exercise.

Jade opened her eyes. The world seemed different, calmer and soothing, like it had been painted with tea. Her body tingled, her skin hot and smooth. She was wearing blue jeans stained with mud, a t-shirt stained with sweat, her big toe stained with bruises, but she no longer noticed this, no longer cared. Her neck had stopped itching. The world had stopped itching.

She turned to Hera. “Do you think we should give them a tombstone?”

Hera looked over to the covered hole, a few scarce flowers already popping their heads back up from where dirt and haphazard movement had pushed them down. Shaking her head, she responded to Jade quietly, "No, best to leave it as it is. Let them become one with the Force peacefully, it is unlikely that people came to an open, shallow grave to pay respects anyway." At that, the knight moved over a few dozen steps into the field and sat down. Patting the ground beside her, Hera motioned for Jade to join her, "Come, sit, the flowers can wait. I have a few questions I want to ask you if you don't mind."

If Jade came to join her, Hera would relax slightly in her rough green armor. The plates and armorweave underlay clicked together to almost prop the Jedi up as she began speaking once more. "Tell me, Jade Hart, why did you become a Jedi? And, why do you want to be one again?"

Jade twirled on her toes, the force flowing throughout, before dancing over to sit beside Hera. She ran her fingertips over Hera's armor, the weave clicking as her nails tapped against them. Then Hera's question came. Jade tensed up, hunching up her shoulders and lowering her head into her lap. "For the first question, I have a kind of illness. It's best controlled with the force. That's why I came to the Jedi," said Jade.

"For the second question..." She was afraid to answer this one. The last person Jade had told that story to, a Justicar, had claimed Jade was manipulating her. But after feeling the force course through her veins, there was something about Hera that made Jade trust her, so she decided to take a chance. "I want to use the force to help those who are lost."
