Something bounced off the catwalk just then. There was no denying the blaster bolt that pinged! for another one to follow right behind it. Shit! Zad darted across the metal, not trying to outrun the bolts but trying to run fast and far enough to hurl himself behind a crate. It was easy to gauge the trajectory of the incoming fire enough to know what side to hide behind.

His partner had gotten the same idea of ‘stay low’. At his query, Zad shrugged as innocently as possible. “I had to get into that container one way or the other! Didn’t have much time to think about it!” He also didn’t have much time to talk about it.

Bolts whizzed by, flanking the crate that he was hugging, and he knew in only moments his attackers would reroute to get a better angle. Some of these thugs were likely already ascending platforms to walk the catwalk. Zad, well, he was in this game to win, and winning meant living, and living meant killing.

His own rifle unslung, the Ranger squeezed the trigger. “I got you!” He shouted across the chaos. It was a twofold meaning. A goon dropped to the ground and would not be getting back up. Tizun would if he wanted to live. “Covering! Go!”

Tizun scoffed at Zad’s comment about having to get into the container. Hope it was worth it. He thought to himself, because now they’re under fire and this will likely be making it to the local news, not something necessary for the operation, but here they were – can’t turn back time.

The blasters ripped through the air and some were even coming close to hitting the cathar, fortunately for the both of them this wasn’t the first time he had blaster bolts coming within inches of striking him, although he wouldn’t admit it – it was never an easy experience, but you’d have to deal with that feeling later because right now all that matters is preservation of one’s own life.

A flurry of blaster bolts erupted from Zad’s blaster zipping past the cathar, confidence in competency, he waited for that key moment where he could slip past the calm to relocate. However, Arah was faced with a situation – he couldn’t go up because the ramps were to high and he couldn’t stay here because there was no coverage; what is a ranger to do in such a circumstance?

Tizun slide off his position and down the docks below, disappear from view; Zad would just have to accept that his partner dropped from sight, at least for now.

Tizun slammed his back up against the nearest point, a container; he took a few deep breaths to calm himself a bit before trying to consider his next steps, his blaster was now parallel with his torso as he gripped it, he peeked his head around the corner quickly to survey the area. Two crooks, focused on Zad delivering their bolts his way; he made a note that it seemed that the targets were mainly that of the unknown gang in the area and not any members of IK – was this beneath them or did they do exactly what he expected?

Arah gave the blaster a quick status check, it was loaded and charged ready to fire. The crooks were not paying attention to him so he took advantage of that, he stepped out of his cover and delivered 4 blaster bolts down range impacting the targets and he quickly slipped back into cover on the other side. Tizun quickly looked to the sky in the general direction he thought the limo was, he wanted to know if they ever took off or not; so far nothing.

For now he needed to relocate, he needed to head to the east, but these containers made it complicated for him; he might just have to do things blindly.

Zad gave his all to give his partner some cover. The crate that he himself was propped up against was a one-off item on an otherwise empty walkway. After pushing more fire toward the enemy, the Ranger stole a look toward the other one only to find nothing. He looked left, looked right, looked down. There he goes.

That was enough for Zad for right now. The two Rangers would have to fend for themselves as much as help each other in their different positions. One had the high ground, the other had the low ground, and it was the first who just then peeked his blaster out from the corner of the crate and took out another thug.

Every other bolt was a miss. The enemy was taking cover behind those containers; Zad had height advantage but could not see behind everything. What he did see beyond people shooting at him to in turn be shot at was a handful of suits tear away from the container he had recently climbed out of.

The IK boys ran onward, navigating their way throughout the chaos while the gangsters were in the center of it. It was clear what was going on: IK was running, leaving their buyers behind, and that container was going with the sellers.

A bolt pinged off the catwalk right by Zad’s feet just then. He jerked aside to see his enemy attempting to flank him after reaching his level. Sparking off another shot, Zad turned around to see more on the approach from the other side of the catwalk. Time to go.

The Ranger took off, leaping over the railing to land atop a container and drop into a roll to land on the ground. Bolts danced across the metal the whole way down but missed their target. “Tizun!” Zad hollered into the comlink as he took a pause behind cover.

The crane was on the move just then as Zad stole a look behind the corner of his cover. It was going for the container of weapons and worse. “That container’s got AMS subjects in it. Repeat: AMS. I tagged the container. I wanna know where it’s going. We can call in the cavalry for these gangsters but IK's making a run for it. We need to let them. We can track them. We can take them. We can do this!”

Zad was confident in his own abilities and now confident enough in his partner’s, but what would Arah Tizun do? Would he agree? Or would he make his own call to call in CPD right now and put an end to this right then and there? Which was the right call: finding out where those AMS subjects came from by witnessing where they would go to, or trying to squeeze that intel out in an interrogation room?

Zad’s voice rang clear in Tizun’s ear, almost a little too much. Was Zad having a bit of a ‘panic’ in his voice? Well maybe, but he didn’t have time to think about it just yet.

Tizun was slipping through the containers, he’d managed to get out of the way of any blaster fire and now his goal was to get out of the area so he could take the next steps. Tizun moved with ease and he thought he was in the clear but instead, he ran into a slight problem that he’d try to quickly dispatch. A Zabrak thug ran into him in a panic, the two collided and Tizun quickly jumped into it. Tizun quickly grabbed an arm of the thug and twisted it fast and brought his opponent to the ground while he gripped the arm quickly and with swift movement the cathar attempted to break the arm of the thug, as the fight occurred Tizun heard his partner further.

With the arm twisted, Tizun replied the sound of the zabrak screaming from the possibly broken arm came across his comm device. “Contagion?!” could be heard over the screaming zabrak. This changed the parameters now, but that was outside their scope. They were suppose to secure the cargo and the bad guys weren’t they? Calling in Coruscant police didn’t seem reasonable, Zad had already killed some people which was a concern for most people even if they were low-life criminal scum. This was making to the new no matter what that this point. Tizun had a tracker on the limo, Zad had a tracker on the container. The package would have to be transferred before being shipped – it gave them time if need be.

“You need to get out. We need to get out… quiet down.” Tizun looked down and realized he had currently injured the main buyer. “I’ve the main buyer right now. Get me out of here.” They could talk to this guy, maybe learn the identity of the sellers; Ranger Tizun threw a set of cuffs on, “Turn him over. Recovery. We can trace.” They had resources at their hands after all, did it make sense to call in the local enforcements? At this point they needed more like a corner and medical transports to move the bodies.

“Get up, start walking; Ruzed let it go. I repeat, let it go.” He had no other choice, they'd made a mess and it needed to be addressed, but just because he was making the decision didn't mean it was over. "Coruscant, this is Ranger Tizun. Need transportation and medical transportation. Shots fired. Coruscant, this is Ranger Tizun." It was the only call, he was duty bound to minimize the damage they'd already caused.

A sudden scream erupted into Zad’s com, catching him off guard after spinning to face the other direction and pop an enemy full of bolts. At first he feared that Tizun had himself got popped but likely not as his voice came through com quite clear with the scream at a distant pitch.

After his partner confirmed having the main buyer in his custody, Zad was on the up and up. Tizun sounded like his partner was about to abandon all hope but he was all the more hopeful that his own partner was backing his play, even if he might have misunderstood it.

“Let it go?” Zad chimed back. “That’s exactly what I intend to do, partner.” Tizun had elected the option of letting the Sector Rangers handle this business, and letting the Coruscant authorities clean up the mess. Zad was confident enough; he had returned fire and those firing on him, so little else to report, and maybe a slap on the wrist? As for the gangsters, CPD would deal with them, while IK would be tracked.

Moments later and the crane lifted the container up and up, and out of the sky a freighter fell. It did not appear to have been challenged, likely checked and cleared by Coruscant itself. Corporate freighter… InteKellar…

Then the container was being summoned into the freighter, all the while with criminals and corporates alike guarding it. Zad was useless in that moment, pinned down by suppressing fire, and Tizun was no better off with his distraction split between keeping his catch.

The plan had been altered to an extent. InterKellar would quickly learn of one of its key players being apprehended in the chaos of tonight and, even with their container being tracked, they would move just as quickly to destroy the evidence.

Still… Zad thought as he moved, quickly, dispatching any asshole dumb enough to contend with him. Main buyer is quite a catch… I’ll take it! Had either Ranger called in the cavalry and that freighter from the sky might have been shot down, everything else with it, and sifting for a trace would have been that much harder.

“Time to mosey, Ranger!” Zad’s voice blasted, not across the com but across the air. He had reached Tizun’s position and was looking forward to squeezing answers out of the Zabrak, all in good time.

“Copy, Ranger Tizun. ETA 10.” Coruscant dispatch confirmed.

Coruscant’s local agency wouldn’t take too much time to arrive as a few units were prepared to attend, however it would still take time for them to mobilize a medical response and dispatch any additional officers if needed. Arah Tizun held his position while he waited for the response to attend. His waiting was interrupted by Zad.

Tizun looked up at his partner while the buyer rocked in pain, crying out. “Negative. I will not allow this one out of my sight until turned over. Go after it if you insist, but my duty lies here to ensure he is put into custody and his care transferred to Corcuscant.” Tizun reached into his pocket and pulled out a small device and told Zad to catch it; it was a tracking response from the device he added to the luxury speeder earlier in the night. Perhaps it would help him with his chase, Tizun could attend later once he finished what he needed to do here.

If Zad was content of chasing after that container he’d have to go alone for the time. Time would be of the essence certainly, therefor he should go now. If that freighter was leaving the planet then it’d be leaving the planet and Zad would have to get to his ship. Tizun knew who Zad was and knew how to contact him, if Zad wanted his assistance later he knew how to reach him – there would still be a few more minuets before he could even consider walking away.

Tizun shrugged up at Zad after he tossed the device; his attention now returned to the criminal he had captured. He lifted the buyer up gently because he knew he likely did some bodily harm to the guy, though he was a Ranger he wasn’t as cold and heartless as the Sith, he knew when he had to adjust his temperament and touch; they’d already won, there was no need to be a ‘hard ass’ anymore.

Tizun escorted the crook to a more open space so that he could be tended to early on.

One thing Tizun consistently had going for him was his literal approach to most of existence as far as his partner could tell. Zad actually enjoyed their misunderstandings so far because it meant that they had something to work on. So far, working with each other had ensured their survival up to this point and their package that came in the form of a crying Zabrak.

“No, I meant...mosey...like pace ourselves with the moment and not rush?” He blinked. That probably also went over the Cathar’s head but whatever. “But still get somewhere more secure?” The containers were ideal cover against whatever gangsters were still in the area but the catwalk above them would be a welcome advantage when it came to firing down on the Rangers.

Zad caught the tracking device and allowed Tizun to brief him on the limo. For a moment, he was tempted to give chase, but he did not want to tempt this on his own and the circumstances had changed. It would have been somewhat satisfying to chase after the freighter and its container right then and there, but his own tracking device wasn't going anywhere. The Rangers had played their cards and had won themselves what appeared to be a leader or at least a negotiator of InterKellar. That was enough for now.

Besides, Zad would not leave his partner on his own, not with threats still looming. Tizun had his hands full with their prisoner. He needed cover. The two Rangers were of one mind at least in that one moment as they moved out from underneath the catwalk to wait for evac. Zad found a nice little spot to hunker down and guard with his blaster ready, ever on the lookout for their remaining enemies; those gangsters who would be less than happy since they had just lost this night.

Tizun blinked at his partner. The last time he said “mosey” he was referring to engaging the mission, to get a move on into the mission and now he means to just pace themselves and not getting running? This human made no sense to the cathar, was it because they were two different species? Is this how all humans act? No. He’d dealt with humans before and never had this tough of a time trying to figure out what was going on. Arah didn’t give Zad a response, instead he just shook his head in a very obvious way to indicate ‘I give up, I don’t understand you.’ Kind of expression.

Tizun pushed the buy to hurry him along. The fighting had mostly subsided, but they were not exactly in the clear not yet.

Corcuscant responded in kind, but they were no special force so they didn’t do anything fancy or exciting on their arrival. Several police vehicles converged on the dockside, the red and blue flashing in rhythm, sounds of sirens screeching to a halt. One tactical unit responded as well. Each vehicle, two to a unit deployed with their side arms, the tactical unit responded with a single troop of 10, armoured and armed. The vehicles swung around and spotted to the two and their captive, a single vehicle touched down and asked if the Rangers were okay. Tizun nodded and requesting a medical transport at their location once safe. The officer nodded and radioed her dispatch to advise of their location, the officer moved on. A glance back and Tizun could see police arresting those who they could and noting the fallen crooks for investigation. The scene had to be documented, Tizun could see that.

It wouldn’t take much longer for an ambulance to touch down a few feet away from the Rangers, a team deployed and took over the patient, immobilizing the arm and given pain management. Despite what Zad might request or want, Tizun would not allow anything to happen. Though he was a crook, he was still entitled to some rights, one being to medical care and not to be in a suffering state. Tizun would ride with the medical team back to the hospital where the buyer would be seen and taken care of, but the buyer did not have hospitalization level of wounds once cleared, the buyer would be transferred to a local precinct and the buyer would be placed in an interview room.

Tizun looked through the one way glass for a few moments before speaking up. He didn’t take take his eyes off the buyer as he spoke. “This file, this lead is yours and yours alone. Therefore, I defer to you, Ranger Ruzed. In there it shall only be you and him. I wouldn’t worry about the shipment or limo; I highly doubt that the freighter will be leaving so fast out of the system – news crews were fairly quick to assimilate that story and I feel like that freighter has some heat on it now; a glimpse is all it takes. If the trackers are functioning as intended, you’ll be able to follow it.”

Temptations surrounded Zad Ruzed’s every waking moment in life, and sleeping moment for that matter. Right then and there at the docks the temptation was strong to flick a finger against the Zabrak’s head in place of breaking his arms for good measure for the cuffs. He had done so plenty of times before, after all. Yet, CPD had insisted that Zad not lay a finger on the suspect so the Ranger complied.

He settled for shifting two fingers from his own two pupils toward the Zabrak’s and, when neither Tizun nor the police officers were looking, flicked a finger against the back of the Zabrak’s horned head. He didn’t budge much. Zad would just innocently shrug it off either way.

Cranking the cockpit, the Iron Justice flew away to trail the evac unit with Tizun in tow. Zad stationed his vessel at the hospital, watched the Zabrak’s ‘examination’ from beginning to end with a cigarette in tow, snuffed it out upon a nurse wagging her finger, got her number and then the number of the interview room.

At the one-way glass, Zad breathed clarity as he blew smoke without any nurse interrupting him. It dissipated upon the window, crafting the Zabrak’s smug face in a haze, and O how the Ranger felt like punching the grin away. Soon enough…

“My tracker’s in gear, partner,” he confirmed. “We made the right call by letting the freighter go...for now." Zad nodded at the Cathar beside him. “Did you spill the beans on what’s inside that container?” It was a steady look, a testing look, like one type of Ranger to another. As if not wanting to know the answer, Zad would continue speaking before Tizun would get the chance, looking back into the window.

“Last thing the media needs is news of those three letters having reached Coruscant, which is the last thing Coruscant needs…” He sighed out another drag of smoke. “Either way, give me some minutes with this kriffhead and I’ll get some answers...one way or the other... InterKellar can wait. Coruscant must come first.”

Tizun had the opportunity to say whatever, even answer Zad as to what he divulged to Coruscant authorities, not that he had the same firsthand information that his partner had. Either way, Zad would be going in that room soon and the Zabrak would not be the same person walking out of it.

Tizun listened to his partner about the tracking information, he didn't need validation for the choice he made. He made the official call that made most sense for the time.

He shook his head, "No. I didn't speak beyond the relevance. They had no reason to know. I haven't spoken to media either, all media releases must go through the proper channels."

The cathar returned his attention to the room beyond. This job had nothing to do with him, he was just here to help and was given the bare minimum in terms of knowledge of their task. This was a weapons deal and that's all that mattered. To that affect, he relented to his partner. "Questions only. This is not some fight club or torture session. Keep it in check and leave your emotions at the door."

Tizun turned away and walked into the precinct. He was not actively involved in this process.

Zad breathed a sigh of relief that his by-the-book partner had not immediately run the news up through the channels, at least not yet. He did not know if Tizun was the type to dial all the right numbers, not even the wrong ones, to which by this time tomorrow Chief Douglas might just be calling both Rangers in for a pronto debriefing.

It wasn’t like they had any evidence. Zad had been in too much of a rush to snap a photo of the AMS creatures back in that container. Now, he never really suspected Tizun as being the type, given his no-nonsense attitude and emotions-are-baggage persona, but Zad was not one to lower his suspicions for even his own Rangers when it came to serious business like this.

Ah well… Zad thought as he lingered cigarette smoke between himself and the window. Media won’t catch wind on account of beans never spilled. I can live with that. So could his partner and that was enough. Tizun warned his own about taking things too far with the Zabrak. Was this another misunderstanding of vocabulary? Could be. Time would tell.

One Ranger opened one door. Another Ranger opened another door and found himself face to face with one Zabrak. “Howdy,” Zad afforded without a smile, lips too busy pressing against a cigarette. He locked the door behind him and took a seat on the chair opposite another with a simple table in between.

“I’m Sector Ranger Zad Ruzed.” Out came the badge. A smile did not come with it.

The Zabrak sat in the interrogation room, just 3 walls, a mirror and a door. That’s all in the room, save the single table and set of chairs in the middle of the room. The Zabrak’s nostrils flared, and his muscles tensed and relaxed repeatedly as he waited for the inevitable to happen. He looked at the mirror, full well knowing he was being observed without hesitation. The Zabrak kept a stone face, no fear, no pain. He knew the jig was up but he wasn’t going to roll over and be belly up for these poor excuses of ‘Sector Rangers.’ The Zabrak looked once at the cast on his arm, but never paid it any further attention.

The Zabrak sat peacefully in his chair, not chained to the table like some animal. He was being patient; this was not his first time under the thumb of the law and no Law agent could stir him from the seat. He was not completely a low-time criminal, not as low as he suspected his captors thought he was. Did they honestly think that some low-level criminal would make a weapons deal with IK? Especially when he full well knew he’d made arrangements to take in an infected super solider.

The Zabrak looked at the door as it slid open, cue the cowboy who called himself a Ranger. The Zabrak eyed the Ranger closely without flinching or show any sign of intimidation. He’d be playing hard ball with this human, if he wanted information, he’d have work for it. The Ranger introduced himself the Zabrak without missing a beat responded, no attention given to the badge.

“I’m your stepfather. Your mom told me not to give you your allowance this week.” The Zabrak taunted as he looked down at the badge, “Oh damn son, what happened here? You do that hair yourself? And what the hell are you wearing?! We never approved that for your school photos! Shame on you.”

The Zabrak smirked at Zad, bracing himself for either a retort or a physical altercation. Oh bring it on you Ranger dog. Bring. It. on. The Zabrak thought to himself.

If the Zabrak thug had hoped to procure a smile from the Ranger than he had succeeded. Stepfather? Mom? Allowance? Was that the best this guy could do? That ‘guy’ was like a highschooler who had just been caught buying low-grade spice and thought this was one giant game that he was already winning.

“My mom’s dead.” Zad admitted coolly, leaning back in his chair. If his counterpart wanted to play then they would play. “Now you know something intimate about me. Let me return the favor.”

He waited, either for another ‘witty’ remark or silence and the kind of confident smile that would crack space. “Rao Lonset. Zabrak male. Obviously.” Zad wasn’t reading from any datapad. He maintained eye contact. “Arrested for conning, counterfeiting, larceny, theft, outlaw tech...rap sheet on you has some letters and numbers, huh?”

A moment of silence that Rao was welcome to break. “So how’d you end up running with...what’s the name of your group, again?” Zad tilted his head. “Buttmonkeys? Assholes? Dickheads? Gotta be close. You know, to get left high and dry by one InterKellar group so that you take the heat and all...for the expendable trash that you are and all…”

The Zabrak, Rao Lonset gave no facial response to Zad’s comment about his mother, however the low thug did have something to say, considering he didn’t know how to shut his mouth, frankly he didn’t care either.

“Yeah? I’m sorry. Sorry I wasn’t the one to carry out the kill or watch her die.” He smirked, “Intimate? Naw champ, that ain’t intimate but if you want something intimate, I had a harem of twi’leks not that long ago. They all couldn’t get enough of me, one of them gave me some weird discharge – now THAT’s intimate!”

The Zabrak thug nodded along with the charges the Ranger read off to him, he was prepared obviously, but what would be expected? The rangers had access to information, it’d be bad form if a ranger walked in here without any knowledge of the crooks past. “Yep, you got it right. Did your homework son. Your mom would be proud of you. Each of them crimes, proud of ‘em all. They only busted me because I let them – it’s called rep.”

The Zabrak leaned back in his chair, maintaining that same eye contact the ranger had with him. “My group? Little dick gang, because we ain’t lookin’ to compensate nuttin’ champ. But you were close, well done.” Rao Lonset shifted in his seat at the accusations of taking all the heat like he did something wrong, the Zabrak shook his head in disagreement though.

“That ain’t the case little man. You got it all wrong. That was part of the plan from the start. They set you up for a galoomp chase, you wasted your time and efforts on me while they could check out, frag off champ; and now you’re in here wastin’ even more time with me while they’re out there gettin’ it all set up and make their mark. You think you just stumbled upon somethin’ by chance, son? Nope, you kriff’d up.” The Zabrak started to laugh at the ranger, “You should see da look on ya face! Oh boy I can die a happy man now, no amount of creds can beat that expression! You failed in your homework!”

The look on his face? What was that look, exactly? The look of a man unmoved, unperturbed, uninterrupted in his resolve? It was evident what Rao was after. Zad might be lacking on hard evidence but he wasn’t lacking on a hard read of the man sitting before him. He’s itching for me to hit him. That would make his day. Oh the story he can tell if I do…but I need the story before I do.

Maybe there was credence to what this Zabrak was spewing. Maybe there was credit to what he was spilling. Maybe his confidence wasn’t entirely misplaced. Maybe the Ranger sitting before him really did have it all wrong. Maybe...maybe not. Zad knew what he did have. It was on its way with the freighter.

What was for certain was that Rao thought he owned this room. So, fine. Fair enough. If he was in control then there was nothing his counterpart could do.

“Well, ya see, the thing about Sector Rangers is we have all the time in the world. You do too, I’m sure, so we can both afford to waste it, right? Hold that thought.” Zad engaged the comlink built into the table. “Need a couple of cafs for me and my friend.”

“Cream and sugar?” Came a voice at the other end.

“None for me. I’m sweet enough. How about you?” Rao had every opportunity to answer.

“Cafs on the way.”

While they were on the way, Zad fell silent and engaged his datapad. A finger went this way, that way. As he read this and that, watched that and in this, he would never once look up, except to receive a guard who handed him his caf. Then the silence would resume. This would go on and on...and on...and on...until and unless that silence was broken.

"Skip 'em. This champ is looking for infect the core worlds by wastin' his breath on me. Little lady, we stumbled upon some infected and this winner is dooming all of the Core by letting it roam free."

Rao sat quietly and patiently in the room for some time. He didn't know what he was doing here now and what this clown of a ranger was doing. Just going to sit here in silence, that was a stupid tactic. He'd spent plenty of time in these rooms that he could play the game to, but he probably didn't plan on doing so because it's just awkward and annoying. But he didn't say anything and that didn't actually bother him, despite how uncomfortable it was. This ranger made a huge mistake with this tactic and Rao knew it and he was making bets on how long it'd take this Ranger to realize how stupid he was.

What did the ranger hope to get? Answers? To what? The ranger failed because no question was asked so why would he talk if there was nothing to discuss. He already said his piece, IK brought the infected in and intended to release it and infect people. He didn't lie about what he'd already said, the longer Zad kept him in here and wasted his time with him, the bigger the advantage IK had because now they weren't being chased and they had all the time in the world.

Zad's only real hope would be to stop wasting his time on this Zabrak low-life who was just some small time crook and start on his prey, afterall the container was marked and trackable.
