EDIT: ROSTER

Alright guys, so I've seen a lot of starship crew-centered RP's form and subsequently fail. I'd largely chalk it up to:
  1. People don't want to be limited to one setting only and only interacting with 3-4 other PC's, especially when one or two members activity declines.
  2. People don't want their own characters to be supporting roles to the Captain's main show.
  3. People didn't have time to commit to all the things they created characters for. (Now that we have 3 character limit, this has been solved for us)
Recognizing these problems, I'd like to try organizing a crew-centered RP. I will not serve as a PC, but instead will serve more like a Dungeon Master, and you the Party. We will not be using any organized dice rolling system, but it will have some structure - mostly on the economy - which I'll get to later. Instead, I will handle all the NPC's, give direction, and you will make all the decisions once you get the ball rolling.

That's the gist of it. Going more into the idea, you will serve as hired hands aboard a starship on the payroll of some company, assigned to perform what should have been a trivial task that will propel you towards greatness. We can also talk about alternative starting plots; exploring the fringes of unknown space, meeting undiscovered species and killing them; whatever... ultimately you may make your own way in the galaxy, becoming pirates or legitimate merchants or even become notorious crime syndicate leaders who start their own Indie faction. But, your characters will not start great - they will be small fries, Joe and Jane Ordinaries on a journey to become extraordinary. This first mission will be the first step on that trek.

What does that mean? That means I'm not looking for "heroes," no Poe Dameron, Luke Skywalker, Han Solo, Leia, Moff Tarkin, Thrawn, Vader, Boba Fett. I am looking for ordinary people: that guy that drives a truck across the continent, the dude that works on an oil rig 6 months out of a year, a bitter vet who's served 3 tours in Iraq mostly staring into the desert or getting shot at by people he couldn't see, maybe the post-office worker that delivers your mail, or perhaps a pizza boy (Futurama - cryogenics notwithstanding - is a great example).

Fear not! You will become great! Though your character starts off basic AF, you should be wiling to make them stronger through character development. I'm not handing out experience, again this isn't an RPG, but this is kind of like Jedi training. Start small, get strong.

While I'm looking for permanent cast, you can always leave the crew at some point and go on your own adventure (aka be free to do the rest of the forum) and return at some point. There will probably be recurring cast, and walk-ons as well as the story unfolds.

As an aside, Force users are not permitted for the main cast, I don't even want Force sensitivity, it's too exceptional - I want people to become great through the creativity of their minds and skill at writing and not magic handwaving, precognition and telekinetics.

So, about that "structure" I mentioned and economics. You get paid for every mission you do, quest you complete, or Episode/Arc that ends, however we want to frame it. It might be in Galactic Credits, or it might be in some sort of honor point system, whatever. You use these credits to upgrade your ship, buy fancier equipment, bionics, advanced training, a new starfighter, or even pool your cash together and get a whole new ship.

This will be almost entirely run on the forum, but I'd also like to have a Skype chat going so we all get to know each other, can talk about things OOC'ly, so you don't have to always post that you're buying things or work out how your character can get out of a pickle. If you're interested, post it up and we can hammer out the ideas. I'm really looking for 3-5 people, but if we get more I might do 2 ships or 1 bigger ship.

*NOTE*
Being a part of one of the failing ship crews; I think that another important element is; activity. The crew is so tied together that even a little inactivity can derail a story-line and cause people to look elsewhere with their characters.

I agree. That's why I feel the character limit is a big boost to activity (a lot of people would create characters they never committed to, myself included) and also that's why I want to have a Skype chat; get to know people, be friends, have fun writing together, rather than making it a chore.

@Law abiding heretic Excuse me, but impressment is perfectly acceptable form of recruitment for some prestigious and completely legitimate businesses. (Yes, that's a perfectly acceptable background if we went for a criminal-style smuggler/cartel story)

I dig it. The Corusca did pretty well for a good long while, and it's still chugging along here and there.

This. I want this. I need this. I am incredibly interested in this.

Interacting with a limited character base such as this would force writers to develop more in depth relationships with their characters. If this is a first come first serve basis, reserve me a slot. I'll have a rough draft for my character hashed out by the end of the day.

This concept sounds very interesting but I'm a little lost in details. What exactly would we do for a living? Are we smugglers, mercs, pirate, traveling bordello?

Edit: apparently I can't read so this question has been answered.

I am committed to this though and I'm fleshing out a character, look for Russell McRready

You definitely ran with the Futurama plug, I love it. Comedy is always welcome in something like this!

That's good to hear, I know that they don't all fail, but I've seen a lot that do. Also, it has incredible roleplayers as members, so it has that going for it!

Will do. It's not necessarily a first-come-first-serve basis, but given that we're limited to three characters now, committing one of those 3 slots to this idea is enough for me to let you in. Like I said, if I get over the number of people that can sanely fit on a ship the size of the Falcon then I'll either do two different ships, or one larger ship with a bigger crew and go all BSG with multiple storylines going on at the same time.

This sounds like exactly what I want and provided you garner interest from other people that want to RP average joes that don't start off as "special snowflakes", then I'm willing to sign up.

Shoot me a PM or whatever, I'll be following this thread.

So will this be done in the Diverse Roleplay section or the Story?

Pretty sure it's meant to be a part of the NTL continuity.

This will be a part of the story. I may have it take the shape of an Indie organization, or it might just be a bunch of Indie characters doing things together. If you have any recommendations for plot lines, let me know - right now I'm thinking you guys run contraband for a small-time consortium, but I'm also willing to do exploration stuff in Wild Space, or doing something like Firefly off the bat.

BIOGRAPHY
[fancybox2]
gInX1ex.jpg
Ailill's parents, both pureblood Corellians living on Onderon, struggled to bring in enough income from their custodial droid maintenance jobs to pay for his expenses. When conventional treatments to cure their son's solar urticaria failed they desperately turned to more experimental methods. If anything, his condition was worsened by pseudomedicine and home remedies. Determined to give Ailill the best opportunity they could they worked long hours in addition to odd jobs to put him through a private school that could adapt to his condition, though couldn't hide how little hope they had for their son's future. In a last ditch effort to give Ailill a fighting chance, they spent their life savings on a protective suit that would shield him from harmful light.

As a young adult Ailill struck out on his own. Fed up with his parent's lack of confidence in their own child's ability to succede in the galaxy, he hopped onto a Startours shuttle and fled. Ailill is now hellbent on finding his own way in the galaxy with the mindset that the only thing that can stop him is himself.

LIFE WITH SOLAR URTICARIA
[fancybox4="http://i.imgur.com/nDSqUYP.jpg?1"]

"I hate the dark."

Solar urticaria is classified as the rare condition in which exposure to ultraviolet, and sometimes even visible, light can induce cases of painful blisters and hives on unprotected areas of skin. Ailill has lived with an extreme case of the already rare disease since the beginnings of infancy. His condition developed further into his teens, then plateaued at a peak at the age of sixteen. He was forced to live a near nocturnal life, only able to attend school late in the evening. Ailill had to wear special ultraviolet resistent clothing and ultraviolet film had to be fitted onto the windows of his home to protect him from harmful sunlight.

In its current state, Ailill's solar urticaria causes lesions, blisters, and hives of such intensity when exposed to ultraviolet light that he is unable to perform simple tasks. The protective suit he wears is the only thing that gives him the ability to leave the darkness.

EDIT: Heeeeey we should get that roster set up with me and Law abiding heretic's character so we can be featured on that indie thread.

I think @Mordred had a similar idea maybe you two can work together (unless for course I am losing my mind and Mordred didn't have such a plan which case I do apologize)

A most interesting concept. A definite consideration.
