Yavin IV
Early Morning

The sun began to rise over the lush canopies that were Yavin IV. The air a sweet crisp scent as the dews washed over the never-ending forests tops. No noise, except the sound of birds and local fauna painting the soundscape, nothing more than nature. There was a forever peace that filled the scene, a peace that many a Jedi would relish as they took a breather. For some, this scene maybe the only scene they’ve seen and for others it could very well be their last scene as well. The future was ever in motion and no one could truly tell what would happen next for anyone. But this, this did not prevent the members of the Order from heeding the call. This was the galaxy currently and there was no likely conclusion in the near future. In a galaxy where power was being exchanged and invasions had begun, it was only a matter of time that all members of the Order would be touched by it; it was imperative to seize every moment as you had it because nothing is permanent.

Though it had not touched this planet or this temple, Jedi Knight Ovinci could not remain in the sanctuary that was a Jedi Temple. Today would likely be he last day at the temple and as such maybe the last time he remained within the walls for some time. It was only natural.

Ovinci stood watch over the stretching greenery as far as he could see and beyond. He was not here on guard, no he just happened to wake up exceptionally earlier then the rest of the occupants of the Temple. He wanted to embrace the moment and breathe it in, holding on to this image as a method of comfort in for the future. To establish a reason to return, a drive to step away from all of this and make efforts to do something other than be a ornament at a Jedi Temple; Ovinci had been working as an unofficial temple guard for some time now (he was not a true temple guard, he’d just been keeping to the Temple grounds) and he was often told to do something more, always pushed to let go and step outside of the comfort zone; he knew he had to… he just didn’t want to.

Ovinci exhaled deeply as he committed the view to memory. I’ll enjoy this day once more before I walk away. The mirialan turned his gaze to the temple grounds. He knew that one of the things people kind of thought a Jedi Knight should do would take on an apprentice, a padawan learner to extend their knowledge to ensure that their knowledge will always live on even if it was not in the Knight themselves. This was a though that Ovinci had ignored, he hadn’t been a Knight very long and he didn’t really think he was best suited to become a teacher; even so, he would keep an eye out today – but he really didn’t expect to find one, nor was he really keen on accepting one. He needed to speak with others in the area, to get the lay of the land and see where he could be most useful. Besides, taking on an apprentice seemed to be something an aspiring Jedi Master would do – the idea of a Master was so far off from this young Knight who really didn’t know his own limits.

Recently, the Knight had pushed himself as he typically did. Practicing and sparring with his brothers and sisters in the Order. He had numbed the pain and fatigue he’s body was enduring by the time he had gotten to his 5th sparring match with the others. He always tried to squeeze every ounce of his potential out when he was out there, this had put such a strain on his body that he needed to be tended to by the healers and spend some time in recovery – he just never would learn. How could someone who’s so laxed with his own safety be responsible for someone else? He didn’t let this consume his thoughts though.

Jedi Knight Ovinci, a 30-year-old 6 foot tall Mirialan with an imposing physique and green skin; dressed in a simple beige robe, his lightsaber clipped to his hip; he displays it with pride and the azure accents quickly catch an admirer’s attention.

Ovinci hopped down from his perch, high atop the buildings that made up the perimeter of the temple grounds; landing on his feet as he collapsed into a crouch before standing back up. He looked around the area, he leant himself a smirk before he began to walk to perimeter first, if all was good there, he would bring himself into the grounds. This patrol would be necessary, despite their safety and peacefulness, on occasions the local fauna could wandered a little to close to the stockpiles or look for an unsuspecting individual for an easy snack; best way to start the day he mused.

YAVIN IV
SUNRISE

Emilia woke at the crack of dawn, with sunlight flowing through the open window like golden syrup and patterned by the thin linen curtains that blew gently in the morning breeze. She had had a restless night, tossing and turning constantly with anxiety and only barely managing to get a couple of hours of sleep. She had been on Yavin IV for two days now and was still just as scared as she was when she arrived. At times, she questioned what she was even doing here – she didn’t even belong here. She belonged on the streets begging for scraps, not living in this sanctuary. With her guilty conscience, she climbed out of bed and donned the grey robes that had been offered to her when she arrived. She hadn’t tried them on yet but felt that if she was going to at least try to feel like she belongs, then dressing the part would certainly help.

A little tight, but they’ll have to do...

Heading out of her room, she slowly moved through the old stone corridors, being careful not to make too much noise and wake someone else up, as the clack of her boots on the cold stone echoed softly. It only took her two tries to find the doors to the courtyard, but eventually made it, stopping momentarily in the threshold to take a deep breath of the sticky, humid air.
As expected, there was barely anyone around at this time, just a few cooks scurrying around preparing for the breakfast rush and a couple of guards keeping a vigilant watch. The one that stood out from the rest, though, was walking the perimeter of the temple, seemingly in a world of his own. She didn’t blame him; the serene atmosphere was a little too calming sometimes. Eager to make new friends, Emilia decided to ask to join the lone Jedi on his walk and jogged over to the wall to meet him.

”Hey!”, she announced, waving politely. ”Do you mind if I join you on your walk? I, uh, don’t know that many people around here yet.”

Ovinci walked past a guard, he paused for a moment and had a short conversation with the guard, a conversation consisting of basic pleasantries, such as what they had done the day, what their daily plan was, and how long they’d been there. Nothing of note, but a simply friendly conversation; it was important to maintain these lines of communication, no one was better than anyone and everyone took part in the grand scheme of things. Ovinci smiled and continued his way.

He was but a stone’s throw away when his senses began to tingle; the Force was speaking to him but not a warning, just a heads up that he would soon not be alone. There is one thing Ovinci came to adjust to early in the training – he was never truly alone and as much as one would attempt to shut it out, the Force would always swirl around the Jedi, like a companion and scout. Because he was a warrior and not particularly a scholar, that was his natural evolution with the Force. The Force wanted him to be able to feel and see through it, he never picked his path in the Force instead it had picked him; even though he often went against it… you know, he was still a youth at heart. But though he would play against it, the Force was always there like a stern parent to tell him what he did wrong.

The Jedi Knight did not break stride as he sensed the Jedi approaching him; they’d speak to him soon enough. He wanted to be… mysterious or something, it’s why he didn’t turn to meet them at first. Soon though, the voice of a young female greeted him. “Hey!” she greeted him, it was distant, but it was definitive. The pitter patter of her steps as they jogged toward him; his mind did a quick calculation – she was gaining ground quickly, athletic perhaps? Or maybe it was just her physique. What slightly surprised him though was the request that had followed, he had done most of this stuff alone; not many people paid him much mind, so it was intriguing.

“My walk, ‘eh?” Ovinci began, his voice cool, relaxed and playful. “But I could be walking into the depths of the forest and challenge some visceral beast! Are you sure you want to walk with a stranger without knowing where he’s going?”

He smirked at his idiotic response, but he still hadn’t turned around to meet this newcomer’s gaze.

“If you’re feeling adventures, sure! Come on up here.” He waved his hand up to his side as without breaking his stride. He peered over his shoulder to meet her gaze; he gave her a playful wink. “I’ve been here for a very long time, haven’t see you around…”

As second nature, he probed at Emilia with the Force, it was more of a greeting then anything. He wasn’t subtle about it either, he was just doing a quick check to see who she was. The Force told him one thing, she’s good people – drop the guard you buffoon.

Walking side-by-side with the Mirialan, Emilia felt at ease. She felt safe for the first time in a long time. Emilia chuckled at his quip about a visceral beast, “Well Mr Jedi, if we do run into something threatening, I’m sure I’ll be the perfect person to keep you safe” she jabbed playfully at his arm. When he finally turned to look at her, she stopped and placed her hands on her waist, cast an inquisitive look with a smirk, and shook her head, “You don’t have to act all tough, I mean look at me, I’m hardly a threat to you!”.

Continuing on their walk, she answered what he was ultimately asking: ”I arrived a couple of days ago from Corellia. I was talking to a fruit vendor by the side of the road, begging for some food, when a Jogan fruit started to rumble in the basket by my side. It fell out and splatted against the pavement. The vendor thought I did it on purpose, he called me ‘one of those freaks you see on the holonet’.”, she gestured with air quotes, ”Of course, I had no f*cking clue what he was talking about, I grew up in a very secluded community. Eventually I figured he was talking about you guys.” Emilia took a deep breath and blinked away the tears beginning to form in her eyes. “For a long time now I’ve been looking for somewhere to call home again, so if I was gonna be anywhere, why not try to get to the place full of others like me?”

No threat you say? Come now don’t sell yourself down. I once knew an 8-year-old who could give a full-grown adult a good wallop when it came down to it.” The Knight quipped. He spoke just before she could go into her tale; but he expected no response.

As they walked his eyes kept scanning the wooded edge. He listened quietly to her and made no remarks throughout, he was genuinely interested in what she had to say, even if his attention was completely fixated on Emilia. A tale he has heard more than once, many a people experienced something like what she explained, the unknown effects of the Force as it worked in mysterious ways. He could never understand where it came from or why it happened, to some they’d ask, Why would the Force embarrass me so?! And to that there was no answer. When it was time the Force made itself known in an overt manner, but it never just happened there was likely smaller things that lead up to the fateful day – but they would be so subtle they could be easily mistaken as coincidence.

Only two days she said? This surprised the Mirialan, it was commonplace to have new members at a much younger age, but this girl was not a girl, but a woman. An adult. It was not uncommon so he would think nothing more of it or even comment on it; he was just always surprised when someone older found their way to the Jedi; but it was just foreign to him since he had been involved with the Order at an early stage of his life. He imagined, given that nature of Yavin IV that someone directed her here. Someone saw the potential and felt comfortable to direct her to “people like her.”

He furrowed his brow at the comment of being “freaks on the holonet.” This bothered him because he honestly believed in the Jedi and seeing the galaxy from within the Order, well it was hard to view himself as an outcast or a freak, this was a natural thing. Oh, how these people would react if they knew they too were part of the “freakshow” – the only difference is they could control it oppose to those who could not. The Jedi Order was a beacon of Hope, despite what people said; they have existed for generations and in each iteration, they’ve always helped the galaxy co-exist and solve so many problems, long before Sector Rangers, long before law enforcement agency. The Jedi helped overcome so much, and this was how they would be seen? It was sad, but it was the truth to people’s perceptions.

He felt the light surge of her emotions when she spoke of finding a place to call home, “Well, we’re mostly family.” Ovinci started, “Still haven’t quite figured out who mom or dad are. So many people wielding a fancy glow stick with wrinkles claim they’re the father in the family, I call them into question.” It was weak attempt at humor.

But then again, I suppose home could be anywhere – not sure why you’d pick a humid forest as a your home – you don’t look much like a wookiee to me; you lack the hair… and the height… and the snarls really.”

He led her to a path that would lead into the wilds of Yavin IV, it was a well-used path and not just into the thickets, it was likely a path used by the security force for patrols, a path to help locate where you were headed in a pinch. The brute of a warrior looked down the path a moment and then looked at the temple grounds. They had a choice to make, either take this walk-through into parts of the forest or head back to the training grounds where soon people would emerge from their slumbers and get on the with the day.

“Tell me something,” the Knight started as he surveyed the area. “I can’t ask you if it was all that you expected, but I can ask you one other thing… besides a home, what do you even plan or even hope to get out of coming here and trying to settle in?” He tapped his chin, “It can’t be the pay, that’s horrible.”

He turned his body to face the woman before him; allowing him the opportunity to look at her, size her up in a manner of speaking. His blue eyes locking with Emilia, as if to read and judge her response to determine the authenticity of whatever her response may be.

Emilia listened intently to her new friend’s words, crossing her arms and maintaining eye contact with him the entire time. She needed to think to his question. What was she doing here, really? She averted her gaze and shifted her weight while she thought.

“Honestly... I want to help. The galaxy can sometimes seem perfect on the tin but when you actually take a closer look, there is so, so much suffering everywhere. And if I have the opportunity - have the power - to make a difference, then I don’t think I could live with myself if I didn’t.” Emilia shrugged her shoulders, “Help comes in all different shapes and sizes, from fighting the good fight on the front lines to handing out rations to the homeless. I want to do it all.” She smiled to herself as she continued, ”And who knows, maybe some day I’ll be The Mom of the Order.”

Ovinci chuckled at her final statement. "Be the mom" this would be interesting to see, everyone was allowed dreams and that wasn't a far fetched one.

"You're right. Help and good come in all forms."

He had to think about what she had said though. It was necessary to way the possible consequences of his actions. He was a Knight, and with the position comes responsibilities and expectations. He had been encouraged to pass on his knowledge and to take a learner, but he really didn't see the excitement of doing that. Sure, he'd taught before - across the grounds. But his lessons were constrained to younglings as they arrived, and on occasion others. He was especially when it came to combat prowess - after all he had chosen the path of a fighter, not a scholar.

He hadn't planned on it, but he saw someone reaching out, someone who didn't know what they had going. He probed her mind to sense her authenticity. She may have felt it, but he wasn't looking to exert any control or power on her so he didn't need to be aggressive. She seemed truthful.

"How much do you know of the Force, or the Jedi?" Ovinci asked the question, he would allow her to answer before he would respond.

"I see." Ovinci looked to the forest and back to the temple grounds, he turned away from her and started toward the path, "Alright, tell you what. Follow the big scary, spooky Jedi has he leads you into the greenery that is Yavin IV." He knew the offer wasn't exactly an attractive one, but that was his way. "I'm going to take you to one of the outlining training areas, clearings, I want to show you something, when it comes to the Jedi and the Force." Okay, now he was hoping to make a little bit better of an impression.

Despite the fact he wasn't planning on it, it wasn't impossible for him to have a sit down with her and demonstrate what she could do with the Force and see how she reacts to, A seeing it and B feeling it.

He was planning to do this, off the record and unofficially. This was his last day on Yavin IV, maybe the Force was trying to tell himself, test him to see if he was ready? Maybe he's wrong, at the very least he'll get to show off.

Realized after my post I didn't give you much to work off, let me remedy that.

Ovinci started walking toward the treeline, "By the way, who are you anyways? People call Ovinci, mostly because my parents happened to call me that awhile back." He paused for a response, "Well, I recommend you keep up - best be a jog, stay close." And with that Jedi Knight broke into a jog, he held up enough to ensure that his companion would be able to match his stride. He did not intend to lose her or treat this as a competition, he just wanted her to start working on her stamina. Using the Force was not something someone with low stamina could sustain. Sure, as you trade with the Force you'd benefit from the energies naturally, but for now, slow and steady.

He would guide her through the path, the world would be swallowed up by the canopy, slivers of sunlight peeking through, but the world was tinted green from all the leaves.

After they hiked, Ovinci stopped and turned his attention to the dense foliage ahead of them. They had little in way of conversation, the run barely touching the Mirialan Jedi. Without a word, he pushed through the foliage. The run now subsided as he pushed his way through the dense greenery.

Ovinci would keep checking in with his companion, to make sure she was within close proximity and that she was doing okay.

Yavin IV had dense undergrowth and if you were not familiar with the surrounding area or the path, one could get lost. Ovinci also put some faith in the Force to guide him through the undergrowth.

"Just up here." He pushed the trees aside and revealed a serene clearing. Some rocks and ruins scattered about, taken by nature. A single simple stream trickled further into the forest. Fallen trees and it was obvious this was a place that had seen action as there were some blaster burns on trees and rocks. The ruins laid in wait, masking a short obstacle course with enough space for an observer, however to perch atop these specific rooms one would have to be creative or use the Force to augment their jump. This was by design, trainers would observe and the trainees would be down below.

Ovinci pointed at a rock formation. Indicating that his companion should take a seat.

"Students come here with their trainers. This allows them a place to work undisturbed. But, some people don't like coming out here because of the potential of wildlife and it's easy to get lost." He explained to her "I certainly hope you were paying attention back there, because this is a pretty decent place to go. Helps clear your mind or allow you the opportunity to sort stuff out."

Ovinci took up a spot in the middle of the clearing and started to stretch. He didn't speak right away, he allowed silence to grip them for awhile; he figured she was taking ik the sights, even if she said anything he would not respond until he was ready to continue. "The Force is around you, always. You and I are not freaks, people are just jealous and annoyed because we can do something they cannot. For those who are not Force sensitive, it is not uncommon for people to be scared. They're scared of the unknown, they fear what they don't understand. You will learn this soon enough.

"Everything is connected and weaved together. The Force is like a friend that'll never leave your side. The first thing anyone should know is to feel it, if you can't feel it you can't get anywhere. So that's what you need to do, you need to take a timeout and take in what you cannot see. This is critical."
Ovinci finished stretching as he concluded his statement. "I want you to reflect. Think back, think far enough and you might start to realize you already knew this."

"The Force," He continued, "Can change your whole life. For someone who knows how to use it…" He disappeared from view as he channeled the Force to augment his speed; he'd reappear next to his companion "Speed." He backflipped into a tree nearby "Height." He front flipped and landed gracefully in front of her, "Balance."

Ovinci returned to the center of the clearing without saying a word. Off in the distance three remotes zipped up behind him in an effort to surprise attack the Jedi Knight, who in turn responded by summoning his lightsaber to his right hand and igniting the blue blade, he turned around and quickly deflected the two low power blaster bolts off into the distance. "Awareness, reflexes" He extinguished the blade and turn to face Emilia, stowing his hilt away.

He reached out with his hand, manipulating the Force, wrapping the energies around the rock she sat on, he lifted it ever slightly before gently setting it back down. "Reach."

He did not do anything that would constitute an impressive feat as he went through the few actions. Everything he had done would be considered very basic applications of the Force; the only thing that would have warranted any real effort was the rocks making up the formation Emilia sat on. There were of course many more applications of the Force that he opted not to demonstrate or get into with this introduction. Someday, if she chose the path he had taken - she would be exposed to more advanced applications.

"Do you have any questions?"

He allowed her to ask and he would answer each question in turn before he would conclude with his final statement, "Good. Now you do it all!" He was obviously joking, his face said it all.

"Naw, let's start small..."

“To be completely honest with you I don’t know a whole lot about either. From what I can gather, the Force is a, uh... a kind of power that you guys can use to manipulate the world around you. Like how I, accidentally, made that Jogan fruit fall off the stand. I have no idea where it comes from, or why I can use it and others can’t, though. That’s what baffles me. Like, why me? You know?” she paused for emphasis, and looked deeply into the Miralian’s eyes, trying to extract what he was thinking from his expression; no luck. “Ah, anyway...”, Emilia shrugged it off. “Oh, and the Jedi? To me you guys aren’t ‘those freaks on the holonet’ like he said you are. I’ve seen the work you’ve done. Seismic shocks level a city? There. Fighting off those- those, uh, what are they called again? Smith? Sith? That’s the one. You’re there. You’re using your power to make a difference. And I think that’s pretty noble of you.” She listened to his response and nodded gently.

”Well it’s nice to meet you Ovinci, I’m Emilia. You can call me Em, if you like.”

As the Miralian began to move towards the forest, Emilia hesitated for a moment. I’ve never been past the walls of the temple before... Ah, what’s the worst that could happen following him? I’ve already lost everything. With a shrug she continued into the foliage. The path narrowed quickly and the plant she brushed by tickled her ankles like tentacles. Up ahead a little ways, she noticed the Jedi had begun to jog, and begrudgingly followed suit Athletics are definitely not my strong suit. Eventually, when they reached the clearing, Emilia was out of breath and was doubled over trying to compose herself. She looked up briefly to catch a look at her companion. Huh. Didn’t even break a sweat....

Taking a seat on the rock formation he had pointed to, she listened intently to what he had to say. Emilia sat in shock as the Miralian demonstrated how the Jedi use the Force to augment their abilities. That’s... “... incredible!”, she blurted out. Composing herself, she continued, ”I had no idea that the Force could be used like that... at all! I thought it was all about reach... Huh.”

”Okay, so, questions: you said that everything is connected – so the force is like the, uh... the thread that binds the fabric of the universe together?; and I’m not sure if I can feel the Force... maybe I’ve always felt it but I just don’t know how to tap into it? How would I do that?”

He listened to her words about what she knew of the Force and the Jedi. He kept his face mute, but he did genuinely want to know. It did not change his opinion of her even in the slightest, he just wanted to see what he needed to get into, so she has minimal experience, not an issue at all. Ovinci had the benefit from his culture when it came to training, his culture had a very rudimentary understanding of the Force, but he was already accustomed to it by the time the Force made it known that he could alter it.

After his basic demonstration, she began to ask him questions. “You got it. Bind the fabric. It’s like this, everything is connected, see? You and I, your friends, that market stall owner, the fruit. Everything sort of goes together.” He waved his hands around him referring to the scene they were in, “Every bird, every leaf, every flower, every grub. It’s weird you know? To think about it as such. Surrounds us and flows through us. What happens to me, you might know. What happens to your family, you’ll know. It doesn’t matter how far. It has its perks, but really sucks?” He laughed uncomfortably, “If something major happens – we’ll all know, and for some it can be debilitating.”

He listened to her second set of questions, he tapped his nose as he looked at her, “Ah! But that’s where you’re wrong. You can feel it, even now you feel it – it’s always been there, but you need to know what you’re looking for.” He hurried to her side, excited, “It’s a subtle thing you see…” He poked her shoulder a couple of times with his finger, “It’s not obvious like that. It’ll feel softer, in the back of your mind. Honest, think back in your childhood – did you at any time enter a situation and just get that feeling of, ‘something is not right?’ and instead you change your mind and avoid the situation or even walking down the street and all of a sudden you say to yourself ‘I normally go that way, but today I really want to go this way’ just to find out something happened on your original route?”

Ovinci began to consider the last thing she asked him, how would she do it? He started to walk away as he thought on her question. He couldn’t come up with a very good answer for her, he wasn’t some scholar he wouldn’t sit here and muse over some philosophical nonsense. No, the only answer he could give her was direct, “You just do.” He figured she would not be happy with that answer, but there really was nothing more to say regarding it.

“Ya start small. You can’t go to the big leagues right away. Everything I did – and you probably won’t believe me - it’s all considerably basic.” Ovinci narrowed his eyes, examining his friend’s status as he considers how to approach the subject. “Before you can do anything, you need to recognize the signs. So, close your eyes.” They just had to do it.

“With your eyes closed, I want you to simply listen. Just listen to everything around you – find a bird or a specific noise that isn’t my absolutely stunning and smooth voice. Just listen.” He paused for a little while to allow her Emilia the opportunity to entertain his request, “Talk to me. What do you hear?”

Emilia scooched further up onto the rock she had been leaning against so that she could sit cross-legged on the top. Alright, calm, serenity. I can do that, can’t I? For just a few moments at least?. She had a million thoughts racing through her head about this whole experience, but right now she only needed one. A bird song was what she picked, tweeting from a nearby treetop in its usual high-pitched melody.

Focus... Focus... Focus... Focus...

”Aargh!”, she couldn’t do it. If I can’t do this one simple thing, how could I ever possibly be a Jedi? What the frick am I even doing here? The calm, soothing words of her new friend kept repeating in her mind: “Just listen”.

I have come way too far to give up now...

Recomposing herself, and taking a deep breath, one by one the sounds around her began to fall away, and in the eye of her mind the scene around her began to fall away as if it were a façade. First the grass, rustling as a small animal weaved its way through. Gone. Second the trees, billowing in the strong humid winds. Gone. Piece by piece it all disappeared, leaving only herself, the rocks she sat upon and a small bird happily tweeting away as the only occupants of this vast now empty space in her mind.

She breathed out sharply. ”Wow.” she gasped. Only now was she realising that she had been holding her breath that entire time. No wonder she was drenched in sweat. Emilia couldn’t help but laugh. ”I had no idea I could even do something like that!” her eyes widened with excitement as a million more thoughts gushed back into her head.

Ovinci watched his companion closely as she followed his direction. When she expressed her frustration he smiled to himself, this was not an uncommon thing, he did something similar more than once. He provided firm encouragement, "Just listen." His words had gotten through to her, this became evident when she began to gather herself. He did join her meditation, he wanted to watch her instead. When she made her comment, he knew she felt something even if it was minor. These would be the building blocks, before getting into some fun applications of the Force, he asked her to do one more thing.

"Alright cool! Let's try one more thing, this should be easier." Ovinci walked over to Emilia and took up a seat near the human. "Same thing as before but this time, look to yourself. Bring it right down to something intimate. Your own body, heart, lungs and circulatory system. Hear it and feel it. This should be simple, you know yourself best after all." He offered her an encouraging smile.

It was a basic plan, Ovinci wanted Emilia to gain confidence in herself and to start learning about how she works, how the body looks, feels, functions. This intimate knowledge would be the basis for all future training, if she knew her body and what it was made of she'll be able later start focusing and isolating individual muscles and systems… from boosting the muscles, consuming less oxygen, purge the body, open and enhance the mind. He didn't plan on helping her with this other than encouraging her to proceed.

If she could start that, he would take her to the next step - basic control; But for now, he wanted to see her discover herself, on her own.
