I'll preface this by saying: I know the books are 7-4 years old, but I'm still tagging it with a spoiler warning in case anyone else was late getting to the read like I was. Also, I'm only on Backlash, and as far as when Tahiri is speaking with her government appointed legal defender, shortly after the incident with Alana stealing the Millennium Falcon. So in discussion I'd appreciate it if you refrained from spoilers after that point. :D

Anyways, as the thread title states, I'm wanting to discuss the legal procedure displayed in these books. I'm enjoying the general story line of the books, and like where it is headed, but I can't help but feel that some of the writing as far as the legal procedure is horrendous. Some examples:

  • Luke Skywalker, a war hero of 3+ wars, instrumental in the fall of the Empire, instrumental in the rise of the New Republic and GA, instrumental in the defeat of the Yuuzhan Vong, and instrumental in the defeat of Jacen Solo, is convicted of a complete bullshit charge. They arrest him, with private bounty hunters, of "failure to recognize Jacen Solo's fall to the dark side." wat? How can your failure to see someone becoming a really shitty person soon enough ((Because lets remember that Luke does recognize it eventually, ya know, when everyone else does), especially a relative? How is that a criminal offense worthy of 10 years of exile?!
  • Executive order, not passed by the senate, can force a collection of private citizens to be followed at all times, even on private property, by an 'observer'. That's a violation of personal rights, violation of private property, and gross over reach. That would be like G.W.Bush declaring that all Muslims were to be followed by an FBI agent, or CNN reporter, because a couple of radicals committed a terrorist act.
  • HOW CAN THE GOVERNMENT LITERALLY CHARGE INSANE JEDI OF CRIMINAL OFFENSES LIKE THEY'RE DOING?! For ones like Valin Horn, or maybe Jysella, since they both damaged private property in the process of insanity, they could be charged with reckless endangerment? BUT HOW CAN THE G.A. For Example: Bazel Warv and Yaqeel both succumb to the insanity away from the Public, on private property, didn't injure anyone in the process, but literally the fact that they were insane was enough for arrest warrants. That would be the same as the government arresting and prosecuting soldiers with PTSD because one killed Chris Kyle (except none of the crazy Jedi have killed anyone yet.)
  • Daala literally hired a company Mandalorians to attack the Jedi, attempt to kill them, destroy, their private property, AND OBVIOUSLY isn't too concerned about people finding out because her assistant said that the other military officials were bothered by it because she didn't let them do it.
  • The Jedi are treated like a cult, where once you're a member you're always a member I.E. Tahiri is treated as a Jedi even though she isn't one, EXCEPT WHEN IT ISN'T CONVENIENT TO THEM WHICH LEADS ME TO MY NEXT POINT
  • The court system is literally able to say "lol no you can't use that lawyer because he might not defend you as best as possible."
  • For just public endangerment and damage to public / private property in the case of Valin, and just for destruction to private property (a cam droid) for Jysella, they are literally frozen in carbonite. Not imprisoned. Just frozen in carbonite.
but but but Prudii this isn't the United States. They don't have our same constitution.

and to that I say, yeah, but they have something that all the planet members of the GA had to ratify. And I HIGHLY doubt that an empire wary population would ratify anything that made any of that legal.
