I'm writing a space opera, in Swedish actually (where I'm from), but the first chapter is translated to English so I can post it here today. Without spoiling anything it's about a discovery made on Mars, and alien first contact. There's never been anything like that written in Swedish before, at least nothing serious and especially nothing centered around Swedish soldiers, so I'm hoping to get it published at the end of next year after a dozen or so rewrites.

Anyway, without further ado, here you guys go. And don't worry, it's super short, only about 280 words! Let me know what you guys think! XD

1. Awakened

The countdown never reached zero.

When the cold fusion reactor started working with a groaning sound, the countdown still had roughly twenty years left until point zero. But a worrisome signal from outside had been caught by one of the automatic systems. There was a plan programmed into the computers for this very situation, and that plan demanded that the countdown be circumvented.

As the gigantic subterranean electrical depots were filled up with stunning speed, different systems tied to the base began to come alive. First was the defense systems. Then, the software and life support systems. When the software had come alive fully, a series of calculations and computations began with the speed of light. Analyses and situational determinations were made at frightening speed.

It very quickly became clear that thousands of years had passed. Much had happened since the day, roughly six thousand five hundred years ago, when the base first had been abandoned and closed down, and the countdown to its rebooting had begun. A series of plans had been installed in the software to cover hundreds of scenarios and directions of development. The right plan was swiftly chosen, based on the early reboot and development on the planet Degom, the one the current inhabitants referred to as Earth.

The systems noted with some dismay that the base's upper echelons had been infiltrated. But the massive doorway, made out of alil, which protected the most important parts of the facility, were still intact, and the invaders were a secondary problem that would be dealt with at a later time.

A second signal was caught right in the middle of calculations. This signal was different in every way, and much, much closer. Therefor it was also a larger threat at this time. The source of the signal was quickly identified. The systems watched as the invaders at the base opened fire on the signal. A hit was registerred, and the signal disappeared, which peripherally was noted by the software.

The system then continued its calculations as if nothing had happened.
