Force Cloak

Excerpt · Known applications

Force cloak, also known as Force camouflage, was a rare Force ability involving the manipulation of light and sound waves to render a user invisible or harder to see. It could mainly be found among trained members of the Jedi or Sith Orders, although certain other Force sects, such as the Nightsisters of Dathomir, have been known to use similar techniques from time to time.

_

Known applications

Force cloak has a wide variety of applications to help conceal oneself. Unlike like its cousin, Force Illusion, a practitioner using Force cloak can fool both organic and inorganic sensors and beings or those otherwise resistant to such mental manipulation, making it a powerful tool for infiltration, sabotage, and ambushes if appropriate countermeasures are not taken to prepare against it.

Weaknesses and Limitations

To and for Force Sensitives:

Although an excellent defense against sight and sound, due to the amount of energy and focus required to maintain a full or partial cloak around oneself, it can be quite easily detected in close proximity by those attuned to the Force who are looking, especially if they are of an equal level or higher (as can be seen by Count Dooku being able to quite easily sense and defeat three cloaked force users at the same time) or if they specialize in developing their perception. It cannot be used in conjunction with an ability to dampen one’s presence in the Force, one must choose one or the other, complete invisibility to both physical sight and the Force is not possible.

It becomes exponentially more difficult to perform and maintain depending on the length of time and noise one is attempting to conceal. A partial concealment to make blur one’s face at a distance or to muffle one’s quiet creeping footfalls is much easier to maintain than a full on concealment while running or fighting, and even the greatest masters of the ability cannot conceal more them themselves. It is thus best used in quick durations to, say, duck past a group of sentries or launch a surprise opening attack rather than lying in wait for an opponent.

To non-FS/in general:

-While Force cloak can be a challenge for a non-Force Sensitive to deal with, it is by no means invulnerable. Smoke grenades, dust, mud, paint, gas, debris, rain, water, snow or even a good old sack of flour can be simple and effective at revealing the position of a cloaked force user, forcing them to either drop it entirely or to waste precious time and energy attempting to quickly adjust to the new conditions or expand their area of coverage to make precise tracking more difficult. Footprints outside of the area being cloaked can be used to hunt down those cloaking themselves as well and ascertain a general direction.

-It provides no protection against weight/pressure based detection or traps-a mine will still detonate if stepped on, sensors attuned to changes in weight will notice something is off. Guard animals or characters with a heightened sense of smell can still detect a cloaked force user.

-Area based weaponry, such as shrapnel, flamethrowers, explosives, or that which expands in a circle, beam, arc from oneself are particularly effective against a cloaked Force Sensitive if one is able to ascertain the general direction they are in, as very few will be able to maintain both a cloak and an effective defense against such without giving away their position or injuring/exhausting themselves by doing so.

***Specific PVP clarifications***

Due to the potential for abuse in PVP, there are some things that need to be explicitly stated in order to reduce confusion and misunderstandings.
  1. You cannot use it to achieve complete invisibility from your opponent on a whim. If you use it while someone is looking at you, they will still be able to see you. You must break their line of sight in order effectively cloak yourself again.
  2. It is a power best used for sneaking past people, escapes, or long distance ambushes. If you advance within ten meters of an opponent, they will be able to spot an outline of your character or have a sense that something is wrong when looking in your direction if they are looking at you.
  3. You cannot conceal anything more than yourself with this, no matter how skilled you are with the power.
Intent

To provide more clarification on/specifically add the Legends power for Stealth based FS characters, since there doesn't appear to be a strictly "canon" article for it on Wookieepedia despite elements being used in TCW, and a casual search of SWRP didn't reveal anything written up for it that I could find. Any suggestions to further balance it for pvp or other RP purposes would definitely be appreciated

@Phoenix or @Clayton

Need a PvP review before I dig into the lore itself.

So, I'm fine with this functioning in a PvE role, but this is one of those abilities that's extremely abuse able in PvP.

I'm hesitant to approve it in any form for PvP, but until I see it being abused, I'm willing to approve it with the following clarifiers and caveats.

1) This doesn't provide complete invisibility in PvP. If someone is already looking at you and you use it when they're looking at you, they'll still be able to see you.
2) This is primarily for sneaking past people. If you're at a close distance and closing in to attack (probably inside 10 meters) they're likely going to be able to spot the outline of a person or at least have a hazy sense that something is weird if they're looking at you.
3) I don't think you'd be able to conceal anything more than yourself with this. Invisibility to a ship would be impractical

Yeah that seems fine and what I had in mind (honestly mostly for PVE) and definitely am okay with the ship restriction, I was unsure what a Level 4 would be able to do with it. If you have some kind of breakdown of what is feasible to do with Cloak by level I think it would be helpful so people don't overreach. Will definitely edit that and the above in once Malon takes a look at it. If you have any other problems or need me to add any sort of clarification, I will, don't want people to misinterpret like w/ Force Light etc.

Let me know when you've made the edits @Dawyn and I can review the lore itself.

@Malon made the edits, should have removed all references to cloaking anything more than yourself.
