Force Seal

Excerpt · Known applications

Force Seal was the technical term for a complicated power with a variety of applications all having to do with locking away and protecting both knowledge and physical location. At it's most common and basic level, it was used to lock both Jedi and Sith holocrons, protecting them from use by layman's. In it's highest form it could be used to seal and protect entire temples (like the ancient temple on Lothal) or tombs, preventing access except by meeting any number of special criteria.

Known applications

Force Seal was a catch all term for the complex application of several lesser alter abilities, which could be used to lock, seal, or otherwise close off objects or locations ranging in size from holocrons and data crystals to Temple doors or even small land masses. Even at the most basic level this power was difficult, complex, and time consuming. It's semi-permanant and object or location locked properties also made it a fundamentally different power than most- bending the physical universe and manipulating the Force in such a way that a Seal would remain functioning practically for eternity was an exhausting and sometimes dangerous prospect, and its usages were closely guarded secrets.

Even at it's most basic (levels 1-2), this power was typically reserved for Masters or strong and experienced Knights or equivalent Force Users. It worked by manipulating physical objects at a near molecular level and rearranging them to form physical locking mechanisms- often puzzle-like in appearance- that only a competent Force User could hope to manipulate and open. This process was time consuming and exhausting, but became the most popular method of locking holocrons, sensitive data crystals, or other small containers, as it prevented access by the insensitive or untrained.

More experienced practitioners (level 3-4) could create increasingly larger and more complicated seals. Powerful Masters, such as those that sat on Jedi and Sith councils, could seal average sized doors with complex locks, or larger doors- like the main door of most temples or tombs- with simple locks. Locks applied to these objects also hardened them against physical penetration, preventing a simple bypass via explosives or blaster fire- the necessary ordinance to break through a Force Sealed door would often destroy the entire apparatus it affected. Legends claim that some of the most powerful Force Users in the Galaxy could perform feats such as sealing small landmasses, closing off entire cave systems or volcanos, and could place complex locks on even the largest of doors.

Special Applications: Individuals with a strong connection to either the Light or Dark Sides of the Force could pour that energy into the item being sealed, making it strongly resistant to being opened by a Force User of the opposite alignment. Especially powerful users (level 3+) could imbue seals with special properties, creating locks that were sensitive to specific locations in space and time or to individuals, which could only be opened by the intended recipient or at the specified location. Various other limitations or requirements could be devised by manipulating the sealed objects properties in various ways- this is most famously exemplified by the seal on the Lothal Jedi Temple, which required the combined efforts of a Master and his Apprentice to open- but could also be used to restrict access to users of a certain experience level, frame of mind, or any number of other special circumstances.

Limitations: The foremost limitation of Force Seal was the sheer energy expenditure involved in the delicate manipulations required in its creation. While an average Knight could conceivably seal a Holocron with a simple lock, he may spend many hours or days in intense meditation doing so, the slightest distraction could ruin the effort, and the seal will not be particularly strong. Experienced Masters often employed small teams of their peers or apprentices to aid in larger efforts, such as sealing temple or archive doors or developing complex locks. Physical aids were required for effective usage, since manipulation of an objects most minute properties was an essential element of the power- these physical aids could take the form of anything from a crystals natural latticework to elaborate mosaics and carvings, and the complexity of this physical structure generally indicated the complexity level of the seal.

No seal is impenetrable. Sufficiently powerful and strong willed Force Users (typically a level higher than the seals creator) could batter their way through locks designed to resist them if given enough time and effort, although this could leave an intruder weakened for some time. A coterie of Force Users could combine their efforts to break particularly powerful seals, pooling their energies to tear apart the mechanism. In either case, breaking a seal through brute force carried its own dangers- distractions could prove destructive to the object to be opened (often destroying holocrons) to harmful or even fatal to the intruder as sealed objects exploded in a burst of raw Force energy. Creative seal breakers could also find ways to manipulate the intent of the seals maker, finding ways to circumvent them altogether. Holocron seals in particular also responded strongly to Force Nexus, and seals placed upon them could be made stronger or weaker depending on proximity to nexus of the same or opposite alignment.

OOC Note: When this power is applied to a specific object that merits a lore write up, the seal should include specific criteria for opening it and note the level of the creator at the time of creation, as well as whether any assisting apprentices or other Force Users were used to create the seal. Sealing a new Holocron, temple, tomb, or other structure or location should be done as part of a plot.

Intent

While creating a holocron and applying a simple lock is fairly straightforward, this write up serves as a guide for applying more complex usages in a way that is clear to both the person sealing an item or location and anyone trying to open it. This power is intended primarily for players to add effects to their own lore items and locations- be they personal holocrons, secret bunkers, hidden temples, sensitive archives or vaults, etc. As a persistent effect, this power could be used to create items that will last well into future Time Lines.
