And now here they were, the last two of the expedition, the important task of clearing the way to the Forge itself. He was looking forward to seeing it, frankly. Even though he knew that he should not wish for such excitement, after all, it would be fraught with danger, and even were it not, such thoughts were not suited to a Jedi Knight. The jungle world had not suited his robe, and so he had left it back at the poorly landed ship (he had knocked over a few trees while attempting to land). Instead, he wore a simple armored set of lightweight clothes. They wouldn't do much in a fight against a lightsaber, he knew, but he was more concerned about the local fauna. His lightsaber hung at his hip, and tucked away was his notebook. He might need it later, should things go well.

The route was nothing too dangerous, at least for now, but he knew that they would need to be mindful. There were traps in need of clearing, after all. He was pretty sure that was why he was here, to be a beacon of the Force while his colleague took care of disarming the traps. Maybe he was here for his knowledge of local history, as limited as it was. He was by no means an expert on the Mandalorians, and there was no way to know what lay ahead in the Forge, for he did not even know how old it was. The Jedi had not changed much in the centuries since it had likely been built, but even then, their ingenuity and understanding of how to restrict access to the temples by only the worthy was quite astounding. He had heard rumors of places where only those possessing the Force had any chance of working the mechanisms to open the doors. He hoped there would be something interesting to challenge his knowledge. It would be fun to know how these things worked, after all.

The others had left to complete their own tasks, not that he had minded, at all, while he enjoyed the company of others, there was just as much reward to be had in self isolation. There was study, reading, meditation, and he must admit, he had a bit of a soft spot for attempting to design his own games using a standard sabaac deck. It was going well, he knew, but there was always fine tuning that needed to be done.

"Any idea what specifically we should be looking for?" He turned and asked Max, looking the other Hedi dead in the eyes. "I mean obviously the traps we were sent to remove, but are there any telltale signs or is this just a 'trust in the Force' kind of thing?" Kyp smiled a bit cheekily. He felt more comfortable letting his sense of humor be seen in these one on one settings. Even sometimes a small group of three or four that he knew well enough.

"By the way, did you hear, the Council assigned me a Padawan? I hadn't expected it to be so... difficult."

Walking through the jungles of Dxun, Max could safely say that between the Demon Moon and Kashyyyk, he had discovered that jungles did not like him and that dislike was mutual. As far as Max was concerned, greenery was all well and good but it was best left as gardens and greenhouses and the like. The wild, untamed, jungles of the Galaxy could very well just burn down to the ground for all Max cared - they were a nuisance at best.

Of course his annoyance at the jungles never stayed long as he released the emotion into the Force as a Jedi should and instead simply focused on pushing onward. Looking over the jungle ahead of them, Max was able to give Kyp a small shrug with an apologetic smile.

"We have a vague idea as to where it is but that's all we've got."
he admitted with a shrug, "Mostly it is a case of following the will of the Force."

As all things were when you were a Jedi.

Max laughed brightly at the mention of a teaching a padawan changing you.

"Oh you have no idea!"
he assured the young Jedi with full confidence, "Being a teacher will be both the most rewarding, and the most challenging, part of you life bar none. There will be times when you wonder if there is any point to it at all; and then you will have times where you must force yourself to release your pride in them into the Force for it is on the verge of becoming a failing. You will love it."

Following the will of the Force, well that was something Kyp was especially good at. He always preferred to trust in the Force to guide him, trust in the Force and his instincts, well, so far it had all worked out, so he saw no reason to start doubting now. What he found he had trouble articulating was more on the lines of his troubles with having a Padawan. He always had trouble expressing these sorts of feelings, concerns, and self-doubt, but here he was. He looked over at his companion on this adventure and smiled.

"So far it has been nothing but difficulty and doubt and concern. My padawan... she is troubled... She sees things, hears voices, and they grow when she opens herself up to the Force. Helping her, guiding her to find some sort of way to drown them out has been difficult. It is good to see her improving, but I..." He stopped and looked down for a moment. "Well, I don't really know where to go from there. I worry that for once, the council has made a mistake assigning her to me, but I also know that I may be best suited to aid her. I just... I never was good at explaining things, even in lessons at the Temple. Sure I can write a report just fine, but, I guess, describing how to really connect with the Force, how to keep it from overwhelming you." He let out a soft sigh, he wasn't quite saying it right, like always, but he hoped that his companion would understand as he began walking again. He had not been paying attention, trusting in the Force to guide him as they walked through the trees, listening to the sounds of the Forest, and that was when the felt his foot catch on something, and by the time it was free, he realized, there was a small gap in the trees to his left, and a sudden rustling, and the rush of a heavy object, and the log came swinging towards them.

Well, at least things were starting off small, Kyp thought. In the seconds they had before the tree collided with the pair, he reached out, finding the connection between the tree and the ground, and with a sudden flick of his wrist, the ropes holding the trap together snapped, the heavy trunk, large enough to squash the pair of them, falling to the ground with a loud thud and a scattering of birds. Kyp turned to look at Max.

"Well, that wasn't too bad..."

Hmm.

It seemed that self-doubt regarding teaching was something that the Jedi Order had in abundance these days. He himself had faced his fair share of it before he had managed to get himself out of the slump it had gotten him into. Of course that he was able to do this because of a near-death experience was something he didn't share with others sharing his old doubts. Because it would be just like so many of the more self-sacrificing Jedi to take that to mean that they would need to throw themselves into the fire in order to deserve to counter their fears.

Rubbing a hand through his beard, he thought about it for a moment before deciding on the advice he had to share on the subject of teaching, especially such a troubled student.

"The Order doesn't ever expect us to be masters of all traits, Kyp. You were chosen for the traits you have mastered but others have strengths you don't. Perhaps a cross-training experience might work for your padawan and yourself?"
he suggested with a smile, "Something to help you both mesh with each other and your peers. Through that you might stumble across the answers you seek."

The wooden trap was rather cute actually.

"Can you believe traps like that felled the Empire at Endor? Beggars belief sometimes."

As they progressed however a different sort of trap revealed itself. Receiving a small warning from the Force, Max was able to react as three mines lept up from the forest floor to upper chest height. Throwing himself to the side, the dragged Kyp to the ground along with him as the mines expended their payload of poisoned darts at torso and head height, thankfully leaving the two prone Jedi out of direct fire.

Max perked up.

"... that's more like it!"

Kyp thought on the offer, even as they continued walking, it was a good idea, to see differing ideas on the Force brought together, to expose his padawan to different viewpoints. But he also worried, he knew she was sensitive about her visions and worried that she might be sensitive to such things. But at the same time, such an experience might be just what she needed.

"That might be wise, we should work to arrange something. I must admit, training Altina has kept me at the Temple longer than usual. I suppose that may be a bad thing in many ways, but I prefer to be out researching, seeking the history of the Jedi. If that makes any sense?"

He was about to continue and discuss the way the wooden, basic traps had led to the defeat of the Empire at Endo when the Mines went off, he had not even thought that such a basic trap would sneak up on him, but his thoughts had been wandering a bit too much, and his focus was not on the here and now. He was dragged down to the ground even as Max lept aside, the darts whistling through the air as they thudded into the trees behind them. As the pair rose and Max perked up, Kyp could not help but smile. It felt good to be out of the temple and dealing with the dangers of historical research once again

"I must admit, I have missed the fun of field work. As much as I enjoy research, there's nothing like being out at the real thing. You know, I never asked, what has been your focus these days? What sort of work have you been doing in the galaxy?"

Kyp brushed some dirt off of his shoulders and began walking again, but it was not long before the tingling at the back of his neck picked up and grew and grew until he knew the danger was imminent. As the mines launched out from the ground in the path before them, Kyp casually sent them flying off into the forest where the thunderous explosions of the three mines rang out. He turned to look at Max and offered a cheeky smile.

"See, no reason to get dirty."

With that, he set off once again, ever onwards to the goal.

Mines.

Mines!

Excellent!

Explosive death was terrible, of course, but the fact that they were facing explosives meant they were on the right path. No one laid a minefield for nothing; there had to be something that needed to be blocked off from enemy access. Plus there was the thrill for beating the odds with these types of thing. They did get his heart working.

"Oh I've just been rushing to put out fires wherever they crop up."
he admitted with a shrug, "More field work than I care to mention really. Far too much mileage being added."

He sighed slightly.

"Alas, that these evil days should be mine."

As they progressed the last of the traps appeared to activate and a large mound of dirt exploded. Unlike the mines however, the explosion was not the danger. The danger came in the form of the ancient, almost sentient, droid that the Mandalorians used to favor; the basilisk war droid. As it's many laser cannons erupted into life, Max couldn't help the smile that came to him as he ignited his saber at both ends.

"YES."

Roaring happily, he threw himself forwards, dodging most of the blasts and deflecting some others with his saberstaff. As he passed by one of the droids legs he thrust his saber in, tearing through gyros and gear at it's 'knee' joint. He happily bounced away from the retaliatory swipe from it's armored claws. Realizing his mood might seem odd to his fellow Jedi he grinned and shrugged.

"Grew up hearing stories about these things; always been a childhood dream of mine to either ride one or fight one. Or both."

Kyp watched as his fellow Jedi gleefully dived into the fray with the Basilisk war Droid. He had not expected such a formidable opponent so soon, but where a place such as Onderon was concerned, he could never be too surprised. Content to watch his friend enjoy himself, Kyp just merely dodged any swipes that came his way for a few moments, until Max and the Droid both came to a brief halt.

He said nothing, reaching out with the Force, letting it flow around it, summoning it up as carefully as he could, letting it reach out, connect his will to the limbs of the droid. Suddenly the droid was in the air, servomotors whining as the limbs began to rip off, wrenching out of their sockets as cleanly as he could muster it. But he was not fast enough, as the libs came free with a metallic crack, and went flying off to the sides, the blaster bolt from one of the droid's nose-mounted blasters struck Kyp in the side and sent him to his knees, his robes singed along with the flesh beneath them.

Kyp looked over to Max and offered a smile, but it was clear the gesture hid a considerable amount of pain. "I tried to break it apart as cleanly as I could. Maybe with some skilled mechanics, we can rebuild it so you can train against it more?" Kyp hoped the gesture would please his friend. He didn't have many, and he truly had enjoyed seeing the childish joy on the face of his fellow Jedi as he fought the droid. Slowly, he staggered to his feet, hand clutching at his side. "Well, anyway, we should get moving. We have a good ways to go until we get to the Forge."

... Max was both disappointed and glad that they had managed to defeat the droid. Glad, of course, because it was a death machine after their ending and Kyp had taken some damage to finally manage to save himself from it. Glad because it meant that they were at least one step closer to their next objective.

Disappointed because that had been one of the biggest wishes from his childhood; to ride a Basilisk war droid like the warriors of old. In the end though he was a grown man and he knew not to look good fortune in the eye and spat at it. Instead he moved over to Kyp and placed a hand over his side, examining the damage through the Force.

"It's alright Kyp - I'm sure I'll have another chance one day."
he joked lightly, "There's bound to be more of them but there's fewer of your ribs so we'll work on protecting those instead yeah? Come on."

He lifted Kyp's arm so that it could drape over his shoulders so he could support Kyp as they walked onward. If Kyp didn't need it then he would let him go but he wasn't about to risk that. As they went ahead however the Force screamed at him of danger and he reached out with the Force, grabbing a chunk of the defeated Basilisk's armour to bring it in front of the two jedi just in time. He saw the two repeater blasters pop up on turrets as the trap activated and the barrels started spinning.

Thankfully he had the armour in front of them, blocking the fire from both of the repeaters and keeping them both safe from their attacks for now.

Kyp's friend helped him to his feet and Kyp offered the man a gentle smile. It was nice to have friends who would help you up when you fell. To keep you moving forward when the world just wants to hold you back. It wasn't really something Kyp had even thought of until he had joined the Order. He had always been a bit of a recluse, a shut-in, even as a child. Even as a Jedi he had kept to himself, preferring his book and studies over any real company. But that was changing as of late, especially since he had been assigned to the training of Altina. Now, he had an apprentice, a new friend... and apparently a pair of repeating blasters to deal with.

Even as the armour was pulled by Max into a covering position, Kyp was reaching out, a simple pull, keeping the barrels from rotating, causing the blasters to begin to overheat, and eventually the thud of the exploding weapons on the other side of the armour. Kyp turned to look at his friend. "You would think they would have tried to actually make it hard to reach this place. Lucky hits aside, we have had little issue so far. I wonder if the real tests are yet to come."

Well, it wasn't much further, because a quite ten minutes or so of walking after the echo of the blaster detonation had quieted led the pair to the gate at last. They had arrived, there was little left to do but to clear any traps on the entrance and make the way safe for their followers. Kyp sat down, not from his injury or anything, but seeking a better place to close his eyes and reach out with the Force, to see just what lay ahead, what perils they might encounter. He hoped Max would join him. They both would need to be well informed if they were to come out of this mess unscathed.

Max wasn't so sure about the tests being weak.

They had, after all, faced off against explosives, blasters and a giant killer robot. None of those things was to be taken lightly in his opinion but oh well. He shrugged a little bit as they progressed onward but decided he might as well give his two credits on why it seemed so 'easy'.

"Well the idea would be that the mines and the blasters would mainly just keep us in one area and allow them to counter attack." he frowned slightly as he thought, "The droid was likely a full defense but it was old - not surprising it didn't hold up too well since it had likely been several thousand years since it was left in ambush mode."

The fact that it had worked at all was something of a miracle.

"Once we're inside we should be able to power up the bunker and turn off all of the defenses so we can have a clear shot to the forge." he reasoned, "They wouldn't build this many traps without a way of easily turning them off for their own convenience."

Reaching the bunker itself, Max was pleased to find that there were no traps visible and none that he could sense with the Force either. Taking his lightsaber, he ignited it and thrust it's blade deep into the metal of the door before carving through it slowly. Inch by inch he expanded the hole until both men could walk through it without stooping.

"After you."

They were in and that was a path forward arranged.
